    B. People who want to buy new houses.
    C. People who care about their figures.
    18. What will people do in dark environments?
    A. Have more food. B. Lose appetite. C. Feel rather cold.
    19. How long should a dinner last at least?
    A. 20 minutes. B. 30 minutes. C. 40 minutes.
    20. What are people advised to do at mealtimes?
    A. Eat quickly. B. Play fast music. C. Use smaller dishes.
C 18. A 19. B 20. C
W: Your house may have an effect on your figure. Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you gain weight or lose weight. You can make your environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home into part of your diet plan.
Open the curtains and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating. If your home doesn’t have enough window light, get more lamps.
Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors can make us have a big appetite (食欲). In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room. So when it’s time to repaint, go blue.
Don’t forget the clock or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories per meal than those who rush through their meals. Try to make dinner last at least half an hour. If you need some help slowing down, turn on relaxing music.
Get smaller dishes. Big bowls and plates can easily make us fat. We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate.

The time to form a new habit depends on the person, the habit itself, the environment, and the motivation. Generally speaking, 60 days is good enough for getting a new habit formed, but some habits could take twice as long. Some habits will never be formed no matter how much time passes. Even a habit that takes months or years to form can still be broken eventually.
Becoming an early riser was really challenging. I struggled with this habit for years to manage to form it. I do break this habit now and then, usually by choice to experience something different for a while. In the past 90 days, I have stayed in bed past 5 am perhaps only two or three times. It takes me less than a week to be back with it. Remembering the benefits surely helps.
In my 20s I was too impatient with many habits. If I couldn’t get something working in a few weeks, I’d often drop it and try something else. Now that I’m in my late 40s, I have learned to think in a more practical way. I know that even if it takes many months or years to form a new habit, I am sure the habit could bring advantages for many years. It doesn’t take me too long to think of carrying out the new habit, I just get it started. When you think about a habit that you have stuck to for many years, who cares if it took a few weeks or six months to form it?
Don’t worry so much about how long it takes to form a habit. Instead, consider which habits could improve the quality of your life so that they are worthy of six months to get them formed. When a habit forms at last, it feels uncomfortable not to do it, and your day doesn’t feel complete without it.
    24. What can we infer from the first paragraph?
    A. We have to keep the habits once formed. B. Most habits can be formed quickly.
    C. We need sixty days to form a new habit. D. The time to form habits varies greatly.
    25. Why does the writer break the habit of getting up early sometimes?
    A. He likes sleeping in bed for a while. B. He wants to try something different.
    C. He prepares breakfast for the family. D. He is afraid to wake up his family.
    26. What does the writer think more about the habit when he is in his forties?
    A. The development of the habit. B. The expense of the habit.
    C. The benefits of the habit. D. The limitation of the habit.
    27. In which part of a magazine is this text most probably taken from?
    A. Education. B. Technology. C. Tourism. D. Literature.
D 25. B 26. C 27. A

More than a third of the world’s population lives in dry lands, areas that experience significant water shortages. Engineers and scientists at the University of Texas at Austin have developed a unique solution to help people in these areas access clean drinking water.
They developed a low-cost gel film (凝胶膜) that can pull water from the air in even the driest climate. Combining two simple ingredients, cellulose and konjac gum, the gel is inexpensive to produce. Just one kilogram of gel can absorb up to six liters of water in a dry climate. For those living in a climate with relative humidity (潮湿), one kilogram of gel can collect up to 13 liters of water a day. As the gel is so inexpensive and easy to make, it may offer a way of providing drinking water to countries with water shortages.
Previously, researchers have harvested fresh water from fog and dew, but that only serves areas with high humidity. Other attempts at pulling water from desert air are typically energy-intensive and do not produce much. In fact, this gel is a vast improvement from previous water harvesting technologies. The maximum water harvested has been 5.87 liters in places with relative humidity. This new gel doubles this amount, uses no energy and is simple to operate and it can be moulded into a shape or size that best suits the user.
“This new work is about practical solutions that people can use to get water in the hottest, driest places on Earth,” said Guihua Yu, professor at the Cockrell School of Engineering. “This could allow millions of people without consistent access to drinking water to have simple, water generating devices at home that they can easily operate.”
“This is not something you need an advanced degree to use,” the paper’s lead author, Youhong “Nancy” Guo said. “It’s straightforward enough that anyone can make it at home if they have the materials.” Scientists are planning on making a thicker gel that will increase the yield, making this technology a practicable solution to drought.
    28. What do we know about the gel film from paragraph 2?
    A. It can increase the humidity of the air.
    B. It can harvest drinking water from the air.
    C. It has been widely applied in desert areas.
    D. It costs lots of money and energy to produce.
    29. Why does the author mention previous water harvesting methods in paragraph 3?
    A. To prove the advantages of the new gel.
    B. To show the tough living conditions in dry regions.
    C. To state the process of manufacturing the new gel.
    D. To present the theory of water harvesting technologies.
    30. What is Guihua Yu’s attitude towards the new water harvesting method?
    A. Indifferent. B. Skeptical.
    C. Disapproving. D. Hopeful.
    31. What will scientists plan to do next?
    A. Develop a thicker gel. B. Produce the gel on a large scale.
    C. Raise money for further research. D. Teach people to make the gel at home.
B 29. A 30. D 31. A

Free Wi-Fi has become incredibly important to us: many stores and shopping malls offer it, restaurants use it to attract customers, and for libraries and coffee shops it is a must-have service.
Even when people are traveling, they scan for free Wi-Fi, which, according to research released by London’s Amba Hotel on Dec 4, has become the most important standard for selecting a hotel.
According to the survey, as many as 67 percent of travelers questioned said that free Wi-Fi would make them more likely to choose accommodation, above other things such as the hotel’s location and friendly staff. When rating a hotel that they’d already stayed in, six in ten travelers believed that unlimited Wi-Fi was the most important factor in their rating.
“Today, people treat their smartphones, tablets and laptops like clothes when they are about to travel to some places. They will never forget to pack it into the suitcase,” said the Daily Mail. “We rely on free Wi-Fi heavily when traveling –– especially when it comes to checking social media, searching for travel tips, and accessing websites.”
However, despite the opportunities that free Wi-Fi gives us, “our over-reliance on technology has come at a price, with travelers feeling unable to escape social media”, said Lonely Planet, the world’s largest travel guide brand.
Anita Isalska, Lonely Planet editor and tech addict, was forced to unplug when she was stuck in an isolated (隔绝的) camp in Greenland recently. “Adjusting to this slower pace, it began to dawn on me: somewhere, somehow, social media had changed into a reflex (条件反射),” she wrote. “I had believed I was capturing moments, but in reality my busy thumbs were preventing me from enjoying travel’s most profound pleasures. How fully can you appreciate a huge glacier or meadow (草地) of wildflowers when your brain is subconsciously (潜意识地) selecting the right photo filter (滤镜), or the perfect six seconds to film?”
In September, the brand released 10 predictions for the future of global travel. One of them was that true escapes will be highly valued in future, so remote hotels will start to make their lack of Internet into a feature. Would you like to have an unplugged holiday?
    32. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this article?
    A. To argue against people’s over-reliance on Wi-Fi.
    B. To predict what global travel will be like in the future.
    C. To protest against travelers’ standard when selecting a hotel.
    D. To stress the growing importance of free Wi-Fi in daily lives.
    33. Why do travelers attach importance to free Wi-Fi when selecting a hotel?
    A. They believe hotels with free Wi-Fi usually have better locations.
    B. They think hotels with free Wi-Fi are likely to provide better service.
    C. They depend on free Wi-Fi to check social media and access websites.
    D. They hope to enjoy more profound pleasures while using free Wi-Fi.
    34. What does the underlined word “unplug” in Paragraph 6 probably mean?
    A. Check social media. B. Call off a travelling plan.
    C. Appreciate beautiful scenery. D. Disconnect from digital devices.
    35. What is the lesson Anita Isalska learned from the isolated camp she attended in Greenland recently?
    A. Travelers should adapt to a slower pace when checking social media.
    B. Addiction to social media has negatively affected the quality of travel.
    C. Travelers should take more photos and videos during their journeys.
    D. Beautiful scenery could be appreciated better if films are shot cautiously.
A 33. C 34. D 35. B
第一段提到“Free Wi-Fi has become incredibly important to us: many stores and shopping malls offer it, restaurants use it to attract customers, and for libraries and coffee shops it is a must-have service.”(免费Wi-Fi对我们来说已经变得非常重要:许多商店和购物中心提供免费Wi-Fi,餐馆用它来吸引顾客,对于图书馆和咖啡馆来说,这是一项必不可少的服务。)但是在文章最后一段又提到“One of them was that true escapes will be highly valued in future, so remote hotels will start to make their lack of Internet into a feature. Would you like to have an unplugged holiday?”(其中之一是,真正的逃离将在未来受到高度重视,因此偏远的酒店将开始把缺乏互联网变成一种特色。 故选A。
第四段最后一句提到“We rely on free Wi-Fi heavily when traveling –– especially when it comes to checking social media, searching for travel tips, and accessing websites.”(我们在旅行时严重依赖免费Wi-Fi,尤其是在查看社交媒体、搜索旅行提示和访问网站时。)
第六段提到“I had believed I was capturing moments, but in reality my busy thumbs were preventing me from enjoying travel’s most profound pleasures.”(我认为我是在捕捉瞬间,但实际上,我忙碌的大拇指让我无法享受旅行中最深刻的乐趣。)
Friendship needs care and attention to keep it in good health. Here are five ways to sustain (保持) long-distance friendships.
    ·Set a regular date
Long-lasting friendships share the characteristic that both sides equally contact (联系) and share with one another. With busy schedules, squeezing in phone calls can be a challenge. ___36___.
    ·More isn’t always merrier
Make sure you have communicated with your friend about how frequently each of you wants to be contacted and what method works best for you both. ___37___. There are alternatives to constant written communication, such as leaving voice messages or having a group chat.
    ·Practise empathy (共情)
___38___. The friend who is remaining needs to be sensitive to all the additional time demands placed on the friend who has moved. The one in the new environment should be sympathetic to the fact that your friend may feel abandoned.
    · ___39___
Anniversaries and birthdays carry even more weight in long-distance friendships. Although technology might make day-to-day communication possible, extra effort goes a long way on special days. Simply keeping a diary that keeps track of friends’ birthdays and other important dates will make sure nothing slips by you.
    ·Don’t rely on technology alone
___40___, but long-distance friendships — even close ones — may require more conscious effort to sustain. Try to seek out chances to renew friendships. How to do it? Just spend face-to-face time together whenever possible.
    A. Remember important dates
    B. Compensate by writing letters
    C. It is also helpful for you to be a friendship keeper

    G. You may be the friend who left or the one who was left behind
D 37. E 38. G 39. A 40. F
根据上文“Make sure you have communicated with your friend about how frequently each of you wants to be contacted and what method works best for you both.”(确保你已经和你的朋友沟通过,了解你们想要联系的频率,以及哪种方法对你们双方都最有效)提到异地朋友之间要商量沟通方式,E项“朋友需要谈论他们喜欢的交流方式”承接上文,进一步提出对交流的方法的沟通,下文“There are alternatives to constant written communication, such as leaving voice messages or having a group chat.”(除了持续的文字交流,还有其他选择,比如留下语音信息或进行群聊)对E项中的“methods of communication”进行了举例说明,上下文语意连贯。故选E项。
根据下文“The friend who is remaining”(留下来的朋友)和“The one in the new environment”(在新环境中的那个)提到朋友的两个不同处境,G项“你可能是朋友中离开的那一方,也可能是被留下的那一方”指出了异地友谊中分为离开的一方和留下的一方,其中“the friend who left”和“the one who was left behind”分别对应下文“The one in the new environment”和“The friend who is remaining”,所以G项符合题意。
故选A项。

根据“My mother is very good at cooking.”
    76. ________ (join) us in the studio tonight are James Smith, a local resident: Vincent Brown, senior manager of a local factory, and Julie Archer, chief of the Norgate Environmental Protection Committee.
Joining
    77. I turned on the TV for some local news, only ________ (hear) that a hurricane was on its way.
    【答案】to hear
故填to hear。
    78. ________ (achieve) such success, Fiona hoped to attract more users through other forms of new media.
Having achieved
    79. ________ (overcome) with sorrow, Zhu Yingtai jumps into Liang Shanbo’s grave.
Overcome
    80. The results indicated that something_________(produce) by the mould had killed the bacteria.
Last April, Jake drove to visit his mother who lived in the countryside. When he went back home, Jake’s mother looked at the dark sky and noticed the sign of a coming storm. Worried about her son’s safety, she told him to drive as carefully as possible on his way home and he promised to give her a call upon his arrival.
With his mother’s words in mind, Jake approached the main road carefully. Soon, it started to rain heavily. Eager to get home, Jake began to drive faster. Two hours later, he came to a rough mountain road that had been flooded by a creek (小溪). Jake, driving a four-wheel truck, figured that he would be OK. At that moment, he didn’t realize that such a thought would be a big mistake.
It was halfway across the creek that an unfortunate incident took place: The rushing waters grabbed hold of his vehicle, pushing it off the road and sending it down a rocky creek bed. The truck finally stopped some 80 feet away. Jake’s problems only grew from there as the water had somehow positioned the truck into the creek bank at a 45-degree angle, making it difficult for him to open the driver’s side door. Injured and trapped inside with the muddy water rising quickly, Jake was certain he was going to die. Shaking with fear, he was at a loss about what to do.
On the road right behind Jake were a delivery worker named Paul and his friend Tom, who were on the way to deliver furniture to customers in the countryside. They witnessed the horrible incident, and when Jake’s truck came to rest in the middle of the overflowing creek, Paul quickly began to take action. First, he grabbed a rope from the back of his vehicle and used it to ensure he could safely approach the truck.
    注意:
    1. 所续词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Next, Paul turned to Tom and yelled, “Give me a rock!”
    __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Jake was about to thank Paul and Tom when the mobile phone in his jacket pocket rang.
    __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Next, Paul turned to Tom and yelled, “Give me a rock!” With the rock in hand, he hit the window over and over , but in vain. He didn’t give up easily; instead, he balanced himself, leaned back and threw the rock at the window again with all his strength. Fortunately, this time he made it — the glass broke. To his relief, it didn’t hurt Jake, who reached out for Paul’s hand and was rescued. Without delay, the two men escaped and returned to safety.
Jake was about to thank Paul and Tom when the mobile phone in his jacket pocket rang. With trembling hands, Jake took out the phone and answered it. “Are you home yet? Everything’s good?” His mother’s anxious voice came over. Tears welled up in his eyes on hearing the familiar voice of concern. Jake choked up as he explained what had happened. Hanging up the phone, he thanked Paul and Tom sincerely. Cold as the rain was, great warmth filled his heart like never before.
    ①成功:make it/succeed
    ②使受伤,伤到:hurt/injure
    ③营救,得救:rescue/save
    ①担心:anxious/worried
    ②感谢:thank/appreciate/show his appreciation/show his gratitude
【点睛】[高分句型1] To his relief, it didn’t hurt Jake, who reached out for Paul’s hand and was rescued.(由关系代词who引导的定语从句)
[高分句型2] Jake choked up as he explained what had happened.(由as引导时间状语从句和what引导宾语从句)
[高分句型3] Cold as the rain was, great warmth filled his heart like never before.(as引导的让步状语从句的倒装)
