    Just Like Home
When the recess (课间休息) bell rang, Priya sighed and slowly stood up. At her old school, she spent recess climbing the monkey bars and sharing secrets with her friends. Now she sat in the corner of the field and watched the other kids play without her.
As she cleared her table, Priya noticed a box of sidewalk chalk sitting on the counter by the window. Then she took her usual place at the end of the recess line.
While she and her classmates filed through the halls and out into the yard, Priya thought about how she and her mother used to draw chalk patterns on the long driveway leading up to their old apartment building. The patterns were called rangoli, and they looked like stars and roses. Priya’s mother said that the drawings were to welcome guests to their home. Priya missed the early mornings she and her mother would spend drawing colourful patterns.
Priya walked over to the basketball court and sat on the hot pavement (路面). She pulled the box out of her pocket and took out a bright red piece of chalk and began drawing the rangoli patterns she loved best. She drew flowers with huge petals (花瓣) and stars with eight points.
“That’s pretty,” a voice said. She turned around and saw that Enrique, a boy in her class, was watching her. “It’s called rangoli,” she said. “They do this in India, where my parents are from.” “You know what that reminds me of?” he asked, kneeling down beside her. “The floor of my grandmother’s house in Mexico has tiles (瓷砖) that have designs like that.”
“What do you mean?” Priya asked. “Hand me a piece of chalk,” Enrique said. “I’ll show you.” Enrique sat down on the pavement and began to draw. He used green, orange, and yellow chalk to draw flowers that were more detailed than Priya’s, but still had huge, curvy (弯曲的) petals. Then he drew circles inside circles, and surrounded them with small diamonds. Priya kept drawing too.

I had an independent and clever dog named Stickeen. He enjoyed the delicious food that my family prepared for him every day. He often ran out of my sight when walking with me.
Early one morning, I went to explore a nearby glacier (冰川). Stickeen followed me, and together we went upon the glacier. Later, I discovered that we were trapped between two very deep cracks (裂缝) in the glacier. The only way across it was a very thin ice that connected the cracks. I made a path across the “bridge” and got to the other side. But my dog was afraid to have a try and began to cry. After taking another careful look at the large cracks, he ran away hopelessly to find some other crossings. By the time he got back, he was confused of course.
When I reached the other side, he screamed louder than ever, and after running back and forth without searching for a good way to escape, he would return to the edge (边缘) of the crack, crying as if in the sadness of death. I called again and again in a sure voice to come on and fear nothing, but he would think for a moment, look down again at the “bridge”, and shout his unshakable thought that he could never, never come that way, and then lie back hopelessly, as if screaming, “O-o-oh! What a place! No-o-o, I can never go-o-o down there!” At last, I seriously shouted to him that now I must certainly leave him and I could wait no longer if he could not come.

Maria and Peter lived in a coastal city. The greatest pleasure in summer for them was to swim at their local beach after school. But one day they started to lose their enthusiasm for swimming in the waters. More often than not, they would find plastic bags thrown on the beach. Worse sill, as they swam in the water, some plastic bags would float around them and even stick to their legs when they walked to the shore.
They were upset and decided something needed to be done to stop the beautiful sea becoming consumed by waste. One weekend,Maria and Peter brought a big bag to the beach and determined to clean it up. Sweat streamed down from their forehead while they bent down and picked up the plastic bags. To their disappointment, after a day’s hard work, there were still many plastic bags lying on the beach or floating in the water. Going home with aching legs and arms, Maria and Peter were almost defeated by a strong sense of failure.
That night over dinner with their parents, the pair ale silently. Noticing their low spirits, Mother asked gently, “You two looked so down. What happened?”Exchanging glances with Peter, Maria replied in a low voice,“It’s those annoying plastic bags. We tried to clean up but it was just impossible.”Understanding the pair’s disappointment, their father patted them on the back and comforted,”Well, it’s really hard for just two of you to fix such a big problem.”“Just two of us.”complained Maria and Peter, looking at each other.Suddenly, an idea lashed through their minds, their eyes shining with excitement.“Yes,that’s the point! We should make more people aware of the problem and encourage them to take action!” the pair said in chorus.

On a winter morning, we piled into our car and headed out to the county kennel (养狗场), We were going to get a dog. I pressed my nose against the car window and wondered what he would be like. Would he shake hands, roll over and run after little animals in the woods? Each passing fence post drew me nearer to my dream dog.
As our family walked into the kennel, among the chaos and noise, silence caught my eye. He was sitting quietly and confidently in a corner cage. When I approached, he lifted one of his feet between the bars, and I touched it carefully. A handwritten sign at the top of his cage read, “Shepherd (牧羊犬)”. Ten minutes later, he was sitting in the back seat of our car.
“His name is Fritz,” my mother announced that night as we put a dog collar around his neck with our phone number and his name on it. Fritz adjusted quickly to life in his new home. Whenever guests arrived, he would run out to greet them. When we took our afternoon walks, he was a cheerful companion. The highlight of his day was when I came back, racing through the front door after school. He would slide through the entryway and then jump into my arms as if he had just won a great prize.
One Friday afternoon, my father declared that we were going out for the night. Each year we took a journey across the mountains to his hometown of Knoxville, Kentucky, for a day of sightseeing. As we loaded up the car, my father told me that the hotel where we would be staying did not allow dogs in. Therefore, Fritz wasn’t going with us.
As our car pulled away, Fritz watched from the edge of the yard with his tail waving quickly, as if to say, “Why are you leaving me alone?” Anyway, we set out. The next day when we came back home, it was already 6 pm.

I feared going into my room after school. Every day it was something different. The hours away at school were long enough to cause a terrible change to my private room. Today can be no different.
As I entered the house, Mom greeted me with a smile. It seemed like nothing was wrong. Still, I wouldn’t believe. Yesterday, I discovered a chocolate cookie spread around the mouth of my angel statue. Its pink lips were covered in chocolate. Obviously, Callie had shared her cookie with my angel.
I looked around for my little sister, Callie, who had just turned three. I didn’t see her. As I checked the sitting room, I noticed it was pretty messy. There were toys all around. There were a few headless dolls, some blocks, the remains of a grape stuck into the carpet. I searched around and there she was, sitting on the sofa with the TV remote in her sticky hands. She looked up and saw me. A huge smile broke out on her face, and she laughed, clapping her hands. I was surprised that they didn’t stick together.
“Sissy (sister)!” She jumped off the sofa and ran to me, hugging my knees and almost tipping me over. “Hi, Callie,” I said, with the slightest smile. I ruffled (抚弄) her long thick hair, and some white crumbs (残渣) fell to the carpet. “Cheese, sissy”, Callie said, pointing at the crumbs that had settled onto the carpet. I found a strong smell of cheese from them. Had Callie focused on destroying only the sitting room? A voice raced across my mind. No way. Not my sister, the destroyer. Not my sister, the three-year-old terror. I turned around and started the scared climb to my room.

“The cleaners said I could pick up our things today,”Jet’s mom said on the drive to school. “Do you think they were able to clean Big Dog?”Jet asked, trying not to sound too worried.
But he was worried. Big Dog was his favorite stuffed ( 填充) animal. Grandpa had won it for him at the fair when he was five years old. Jet was eight now, and he didn’t need to sleep with it or anything. But he did need it. He needed it to sit on the shelf (架子) above his bed — the shelf that had been burned by the house fire.
“I’m not sure what they were able to save,”Mom said.“They said they weren’t able to save our photo albums (相册). I sure will miss those pictures.”
Jet could tell she was really sad.“I’ll pick you up after school, and we’ll go through the boxes together,”Mom said before she drove off.
Jet tried to focus on his schoolwork all day, but he couldn’t keep his mind off Big Dog.
He held his backpack through the halls as if he were carrying his old stuffed friend. During library time, he checked out a book about dogs.
RRRRRINNNGGG! Time for art class. Mr. Light said it was“artist’s choice”day, so they could work on whatever they wished.
Jet stared at an empty page. He thought of his mom picking up the boxes of things that had been damaged by the fire.
Then he remembered how sad his mom was about the photo albums. Most things could be replaced (替换) at the store. But the pictures were gone forever. He knew what to draw.
Jet drew a picture of himself opening presents in front of a Christmas tree. Then one of him and his mom camping. There was one of him playing baseball and one of their visit to see Grandpa. By the time class was over, Jet had made a small album.

Every Saturday, Grandpa and I walk to the nursing home (养老院) a few blocks away from our house to visit some of the old people who live there.
First we visit Mrs. Sokol. I call her “The Cook.” She likes to talk about the time when she was a well-known cook back in Russia. People would come from miles around, just to taste her famous chicken soup.
Next we visit Mr. Meyer. I call him “The Joke Man.” He tells us jokes, and laughs at his own jokes, shaking up and down and turning red in the face. Grandpa and I can’t help but laugh along with him, even when the jokes aren’t very funny.
Next door is Mr. Lipman. I call him “The Singer” because he loves to sing for us. Whenever he does, his beautiful voice fills the air, so clear and strong that we always sing along with him.
Then we visit Mrs. Kagan, “The Grandmother,” who shows us pictures of her grandchildren. They’re all over the room, in frames (画框) and even taped to the walls.
One day Grandpa got sick and had to go to the hospital. The doctors said they didn’t think he would ever get better.
Saturday came. How could I go visiting the nursing home without Grandpa? Then I remembered what Grandpa once told me: “Nothing should stand in the way of doing a good deed (行为).” So I went alone. Everyone was happy to see me. They were surprised when they didn’t see Grandpa. When I told them that he was sick and in the hospital, they were sad. They told me that Grandpa would have a complete recovery.
The Cook went on to reveal (透露) some of her secret recipes (食谱). The Joke Man told me his latest jokes. The Singer sang a song especially for me. The Grandmother showed me more pictures. After a while, I said goodbye to everyone.
A few days later, Grandpa was still in the hospital. He was not eating, he could not sit up and he could hardly speak. I went to the corner of the room so Grandpa wouldn’t see me cry.

My great-grandmother Eileen is fierce, loyal and strong and a bit of a legend in her own lifetime, which now stretches to 92 years. I should add that we’re not allowed to call her Gran, because she says it makes her feel old.
That summer, I lost my job and felt hopeless. One day, I paid a visit to her. She picked up a box which she placed on the coffee table. “There you go,” she said. “You do know what you’re doing with these things, don’t you?”
It was a new phone. Her current mobile was pretty ancient. I was amazed it was still going.
    “Yes,” I said.
“Good. That’s why I ask you. You young people know more about such things than us oldies. You can take it home with you and get it all set up,” she went on. “Then, when you bring it back, you can show me how to use my new phone, such as getting on the internet, sending e-mails and so on.” She smiled so sweetly that I felt a surge of love for her.
I grabbed the box and stood up. Setting up the phone would be easy. It was teaching her how to use it that may prove challenging.
The following day I headed back to my great-grandmother’s with the phone. “Here’s your phone. It’s all ready to use.”
For the next hour, I was busy setting up her passcode and fingerprint recognition, which she said was like something out of James Bond.
She chose a picture for her screen and it was all going so well until I tried to show her how to swipe (滑动屏幕). “What do you mean, swipe?” she asked. She was 92, I reminded myself. This had been tiring for her.
She pressed at the up arrow and got angry when nothing happened. When I finally got her to swipe, she didn’t put the right amount of pressure on and the menu slipped away. After what seemed like hours, she threw the phone across the room and it landed on the sofa. “Take it away!” she howled. “I want my old phone back!”
I picked up the phone and was about to leave to give her time to cool down when I realized I didn’t want to go home when she was angry and upset.

Today I was walking along the street when a homeless woman asked me for some change. I gave her some money and stopped to talk to her for a while.
I asked her about how she ended up on the street and if there was a shelter she could go to. She told me about some of her struggles. She told me that she left home at seventeen and had been homeless since then. She said that her bag with all her clothes and possessions was stolen the night before, while she was sleeping outside a church. Shesaid that she went to the day centre every day and they made calls to try to find her a shelter but nothing was available, as all shelters for women were full up. It had been like this for months. I listened to her and said a few kind words to her. After we spoke, I told her that it was really nice to meet her and wished her all the best.
I left feeling really sad and frustrated that there was nothing I could do to ease her situation. I have spoken to a few other homeless people and I have heard about how difficult it is to get a place in a shelter, or sometimes some shelters can be so unsafe that it is better for them to sleep on the streets.
I was on my way to my flower store. While trimming(修剪)these kinds of beautiful flowers, I thought about the lady I had just met and other homeless people I had spoken to. I thought it must be frustrating not to be able to experience so many of the day-to-day things that I and many others take for granted such as a roof over our heads, a bed to sleep in, money to buy food and even money to buy presents for a dear one.

Tamara opened her eyes and jumped out of bed. Most days she hated getting up early. But today was different. Tamara was wide awake and excited because today her family was going on a hike and having a picnic. This was Tamara’s first hike. She put on her new boots her mother had bought just for the hike.
Tamara ran down the stairs. Her mother and elder brother James were there at the bottom. James was moving up and down impatiently. Everyone was ready for the hike.
Tamara’s family drove for two hours until they were far away from the city. Once they left the city and the suburbs, there weren’t many buildings beside the road. Instead there were trees and fields. Tamara saw groups of cows chewing on grass. The road climbed up. They were driving into the mountains. Tamara rolled down her window. The air was cool, and she liked it. Soon, Tamara’s mother parked the car.
“Are we here? Is this the hike?” asked Tamara.
“Yes,” said James. “See that trail (小路)? That’s where we’ll start hiking.”James had hiked this trail before, and it was one of his favorites.
Tamara looked at the trail. It was a dirt path and went into the forest. Tall trees and tiny flowers lined both sides of the path. Tamara, her mother, and her brother began to walk. Butterflies and bees flew over the flowers. At first the bees made Tamara nervous, but soon she saw that they were more interested in the flowers than they were in her.
Tamara’s mother talked about the other times the family had gone hiking. James talked about the time he went camping with the Boy Scouts (童子军). Tamara wanted to talk, but she felt out of breath. The trail was steep. They had been walking uphill for an hour by now. Tamara took hold of her mother’s hand. “I’m tired,” she said.

    1.One possible version:
“What are you guys doing?” a voice asked. Priya and Enrique were so absorbed in drawing that they didn’t notice that their classmate Farah had been watching them. “Hey,” Farah said, sitting down beside them, “that looks like the rugs in my uncle’s house in Iran. Except on the rugs, the shapes are bigger, and aren’t as curly.” “Show us,” said Enrique, handing her a piece of chalk. Farah took the chalk and began drawing. She drew shapes that were full of straight lines and bold colours. Ms. Lopez, Priya’s teacher, said, “That’s beautiful!” Priya, Enrique and Farah stood up and looked at what they had done. The pavement was covered in bright colours and shapes: triangles, circles, squares and diamonds, all mixed together.
Their classmates began to come over to see what was happening. “It looks like a universe, with lots of planets and stars,” said Lily. “It looks like a coral reef full of tropical fish,” said Jasper. “What do you think it looks like, Priya?” said Enrique. Priya looked at Enrique and Farah. Their knees, elbows, and fingers were covered in red, yellow, green and blue chalk dust. Priya smiled and said, “It looks like home welcoming guests to it.” The whole room was filled with laughter, and children’s creativity was endless.

The next day, they went to the beach and filmed a short video showing plastic bags lying on the beach and floating in the sea. Peter, who was good at writing, wrote an article talking about the present situation of the beach and asking people to take part in the clean-up.
Excited and nervous, they posted the video and article on WeChat. To their amazement, their post went viral online immediately. Countless comments flooded in saying how heartbroken they were when looking at the polluted beach and ocean. What amazed Maria and Peter more was that numerous people in their community, encouraged by their efforts, offered to join in their clean-up. More and more people came to the beach to collect plastic bags and they also appealed to others to avoid throwing or using plastic bags. A year later, with their joint and continuous effort, the coast regained its beauty and Maria and Peter regained their long-awaited pleasure.

4.Night fell but there was still no sign of Fritz. We went from neighbor to neighbor, house to house. Each shake of the head drove me to despair. “Please, bring Fritz home safe,” I wished lying in bed that night. But a week passed without him. Each afternoon I would rush out of school and run all the way home to ask if there was any news of Fritz. But when I burst through the door and into the house, I would be greeted only by silence and my mother’s sad smile.
Two weeks later, a call from a man brought us the great news. The man found the hungry and weak Fritz on the street and later got our phone number from the tag on him. Immediately, my father and I were on the way to fetching Fritz. The moment I climbed out of the car, Fritz ran toward me like a wild pig. He slipped and quickly got up and slipped again before he regained his balance and jumped into my arms. I held him tightly as he licked my face.

5.I pushed the door open and saw a complete mess again! My bed and desk were fully covered by white crumbs, and the walls were full of grape juice graffiti. What’s worse, I discovered cheese spread around the mouth of my angel statue whose pink lips were covered in cheese. I was completely shocked. Filled with anger, I was unable to utter a single word. So angry was I that I shook my fist at her. The moment she saw my reaction, she froze with fright, as if rooted on the ground. All of a sudden, she bursted into tears.
Seeing the tears in her eyes, I bent down and lifted her up gently. “It’s OK. Callie, no matter what you do, I will love you forever. You are such a good girl, for it is you creative imaginations that give me surprises everyday. Thank you!” I kissed her on her face, ruffling her long thick hair. On hearing that, her eyes widened with excitement and her mouth opened. “Sissy (sister)! I love you too.” She said heartily, and the smile on her face shone like a diamond.

Suddenly the nurse came into the room and said, “You have some visitors.” I looked up and saw The Joke Man. Behind him were The Cook, The Singer, and The Grandmother. The Cook brought Grandpa a hot bowl of chicken soup. The Joke Man told us some new jokes, and everyone had to dry their eyes from laughing so hard. Next, The Grandmother showed Grandpa a get-well card made by her granddaughters. The Singer started singing, and we sang along with him. Before I knew it, visiting hours were up. Everyone said goodbye and told Grandpa that they would see him again soon.
That evening, Grandpa called the nurse in and said he was hungry. Soon he began to sit up. Finally he was able to get out of bed. Each day, Grandpa felt better and better, and he grew stronger and stronger. Soon he was able to go home. The doctors were shocked. They said his recovery was a medical miracle. But I knew the truth: Our friends’ visit had made him well. Grandpa is better now. Every Saturday, without fail, we walk together to visit our friends.

I held her finger gently and her face lit up when the menu appeared. “I want a selfie with you. Show me how to use the camera!” My heart sank a bit, but she didn’t need a lot of help and we sent her friend Emily a photo of us both laughing. “I can’t wait to show everyone my new phone,” she said happily. “Thank you for your patience, Tom.”
I was not feeling so hopeless any more now. Great-grandma’s spirit inspired me greatly. It occurred to me that if a 92-year-old lady could learn new skills, then so could I. I had no doubt that I would find something I liked even more. There must be a job out there for me somewhere and I was sure to find it. I headed for home with a smile on my face and a whole lot of love for my amazing great-grandmother. My great-grandmother would always be a role model for me to learn from.

And then I headed for the place where we had met. Luckily, she was there. Seeing me appearing again, she seemed delighted, with a bright smile on her face. When I handed her all the stuff I had prepared for her, she cried, burying her face in her hands. I came up to comfort her and ask her whether she would like to work in my store.
She raised her head suddenly, with her eyes full of surprise. She said with a trembling voice, “I certainly would love to, but am I suitable for the job?" I immediately responded that she could surely do well in my store! From then on, she worked pretty hard. In addition to her own job, she even helped others to go through their hard times. I felt more than delighted to see my kindness spread. I made up my mind to volunteer in local charities to help more people in need.
