Henry Cavendish was born in Nice. France, on October 10,1731, the oldest son of Lord Charles Cavendish and Lady Anne Grey, who died a few years after Henry was born. As a youth he attended Dr.Newcomb’s Academy in Hackney, England. He entered Peterhouse, Cambridge, 1749, but left after three years without taking a degree.
Cavendish returned to London, England to live with his father. There, Cavendish built himself a laboratory and workshop. When his father died in 1783. Cavendish moved the laboratory to Clapham Common, where he also lived. He never married and was so reserved that there is little record of his having any social life except occasional meetings with scientific friends.
During his lifetime, Cavendish made striking discoveries in chemistry, mainly between 1766 and 1788, and in electricity, between 1771 and 1788. In 1783, he published a study of the means of determining the freezing point of mercury (水银).In 1784. Cavendish determined the make-up of water, showing that it was a combination of oxygen and hydrogen. Cavendish’s most celebrated investigation was that on the density (密度) of the earth. In 1798, he published a single famous paper on the density of the earth.
Spending his whole life in the laboratory and library, Cavendish’s life was quite simple. He died in London on February 24,1810. But because he had a low regard for glory, he cared little about publishing his results and getting priority for discovery, and much of his work remained unpublished. It was not until the middle of the 19th century that some extremely valuable materials were found in his manuscripts (手稿),which proved that he had made a great contribution to the development of science.
    4. What happened to Cavendish in 1752?
    A. His wife left him.
    B. He dropped out of Cambridge.
    C. His mother passed away.

    6. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about concerning Cavendish?
    A. His friends. B. His achievements.
    C. His marriage life. D. His teenage years
    7. What can be learned about Cavendish from the last paragraph?
    A. He died when he was 89 years old.
    B. His contribution still remains unknown.
    C. He had spent his life pursuing fame.
D His manuscripts are of great value.

The answer to traffic jams on the highways around airports could be electric air taxis. But this is not a futuristic dream. United Airlines is helping to make it a reality.
The carrier is ordering 200 electric air taxis, also called eVOTL planes, from Eve Air Mobility which designed vehicles for short distance-like going from city centers to airports-that can seat four passengers. The eVOTL planes take off and land like helicopters.
These vehicles that are due to be delivered in 2026 can fly from rooftop to rooftop. These types of vehicles are more environmental than using ground transportation. That’s because the air taxis use electric engines that have no carbon emissions(碳排放). This will reduce pollution and noise levels by 90 percent, according to United Airlines and Eve Air Mobility.
“Our agreement with Eve shows our confidence in the urban air mobility market and serves as another important step toward our goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050,” said Michael Leskinen, president of United Airlines Ventures. “We’ll get there not with empty gestures, but by taking the harder path of actually reducing the emissions from flying.” If the company meets its goal of reducing its carbon footprint to net zero, it will be the first US airline to do so.
This isn’t United’s first try for environmental protection. The company started using bio-fuel(生物燃料) in flights from Los Angeles in 2016. It was the first airline in the US to promise to significantly use bio-fuel and this could cut emissions by 60 percent. From baby steps to flying ones, this airline is working on its commitment to the environment. Hopefully this is just one part of a global commitment to green the airline industry.
    8. How does the author introduce the takeoff and landing of eVOTL planes?
    A. By providing a long list. B. By using experts’ words.
    C. By making a comparison. D. By referring to a news report.
    9. What can we learn about the eVOTL planes?
    A. They make no noise when flying. B. They each can hold eight passengers.
    C. They are designed for long distances. D. They are friendly to the environment.
    10. What can be inferred about United Airlines?
    A. It promises to use bio-fuel in 2050. B. It has a pioneering spirit.
    C. It stopped carbon emissions in 2016. D. It shows no interest in electric air taxis.
    11. What might be the best title for the text?
    A. The Promising Future of Air Travel Is Seen Now
    B. More Companies Are Developing Green Technologies
    C. Electric Air Taxis Will Make Getting to the Airport Easy
    D. Electric Air Taxis Will Be Put Into Wide Use in the Future
C 9. D 10. B 11. C

根据第二段“The eVOTL planes take off and land like helicopters.”( eVOTL飞机像直升机一样起飞和降落。)
根据第三段“These types of vehicles are more environmental than using ground transportation. That’s because the air taxis use electric engines that have no carbon emissions(碳排放).”(这些类型的车辆比使用地面运输更环保。
根据第四段“If the company meets its goal of reducing its carbon footprint to net zero, it will be the first US airline to do so.”(如果该公司实现了将碳足印降至零的目标,它将成为首家这样做的美国航空公司。)及最后一段“It was the first airline in the US to promise to significantly use bio-fuel and this could cut emissions by 60 percent.”(它是美国第一家承诺大量使用生物燃料的航空公司,这可以减少60% 的排放量。)
    D
Edible(可食用的) cities are becoming increasingly popular around the world. In the city of Andernach, Germany, anyone who lives or happens to be in the town of 30,000 people is encouraged to pick and take whatever they want from the fruiting trees and bushes in the town center. The town, which sits in the Rhine River Valley, is among the growing number of edible cities across the globe. Since the start of the program in 2010, there is more than enough produce to go around every year regardless of whether someone grabs a single pear or a bag full of potatoes.
“People here are very proud when talking to others about our edible city,” shared Bettina Schneider, city team coordinator(协调员) for the Edible Cities Network in Andernach. “The land that was changed into fruiting gardens and orchards(果园) in Andernach was previously overgrown. But today the town is covered with peach, almond and pear trees.”
Andernach’s public gardens and orchards have also inspired other cities in Germany and throughout the European Union to follow suit. Today, the Edible Cities Network—a group of about 150 cities worldwide with fruit trees and vegetable gardens in public places for anyone to access free of charge—is funded by the European Commission.
“Public green natural spaces in cities are incredibly valuable, and even more so as temperatures rise and cities become more crowded,” said Ina sāumel, a principal investigator for the Edible Cities Network. She explained that Edible Cities Network’s goal is to encourage people to get involved in their urban parks instead of only thinking of them as passive places.
Many cities in the United States have also started similar projects. There are public lands from Seattle to North Carolina where people are welcome to pick and take from fruiting trees and bushes.
    12. What can people do in an edible city?
    A. Grow fruit trees and potatoes anywhere.
    B. Pick agricultural products on public land.
    C. Go to any restaurant to enjoy food for free.
    D. Make a fortune by selling apples and peaches.
    13. What is Andernach residents’ attitude toward their edible city?
    A. Favorable. B. Intolerant.
    C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
    14. What is the goal of the Edible Cities Network?
    A. To enable people to access fresh food. B. To make the cities cleaner and nicer.
    C. To stop people from living a busy life. D. To involve people in their urban parks.
    15. What is most likely to be discussed following the last paragraph?
    A. Some edible cities in America. B. Predictions about edible cities.
    C. Evaluations about edible cities. D. People’s dependence on edible cities.
B 13. A 14. D 15. A
根据第一段中“In the city of Andernach, Germany, anyone who lives or happens to be in the town of 30,000 people is encouraged to pick and take whatever they want from the fruiting trees and bushes in the town center.(在安德纳赫,任何一个居住在这个3万人口的小镇上的人都被鼓励从镇中心的果树和灌木丛中采摘任何他们想要的东西。)”
根据第二段“‘People here are very proud when talking to others about our edible city,’ shared Bettina Schneider, city team coordinator(协调员) for the Edible Cities Network in Andernach.(这里的人们在和别人谈论我们的可食用城市时感到非常自豪,”安德纳赫可食用城市网络的城市团队协调员贝蒂娜·施耐德(Bettina Schneider)分享道。)” 故选A。
根据第四段“She explained that Edible Cities Network’s goal is to encourage people to get involved in their urban parks instead of only thinking of them as passive places.(她解释说,食品城市网络的目标是鼓励人们参与到他们的城市公园,而不是仅仅认为它们是被动的地方。)”
根据最后一段中“Many cities in the United States have also started similar projects.(美国的许多城市也开始了类似的项目。)” 故选A。
How to Get Along With Friends
Friendships can have a major impact on your health and happiness, but it’s not always easy to develop friendships. The following are some tips for you.
    Be positive
____16____. If you’re someone who likes to discuss hopeless-sounding situations, that’s OK, but remember to talk about more cheerful topics, too. Discussing books or sharing funny stories are better for your friendships. Of course, if something bad happens, it’s OK to ask your friends for support. You’re not expected to be positive all the time.
    ____17____
Listening helps you learn about your friends and support them when they need it. Give your friends your full attention, and make mental notes about the important things in their lives—like the names of their loved ones, things they like and major things that have happened or are happening in their lives. ____18____, don’t immediately share your experiences or advice. Instead, ask them, “How are you feeling about it?” or “What do you plan to do about that?”
    Make time for each other
Spending time with your friends has a huge impact, whether it’s for a few minutes or for several hours. ____19____. If you can’t easily see your friends in person, try texting each other or having video calls. It certainly doesn’t replace an in-person hangout, but it’s a good way to keep in touch.
    Calmly discuss problems one-on-one
If your friends are doing something that’s bothering you, it doesn’t help to give them the silent treatment or leave them out. Instead, talk to them one-on-one about what’s bothering you, and calmly share how you feel about it. For example, if your friends have given you an embarrassing (令人尴尬的) nickname, pull them aside and say, “I know you’re trying to be funny, but when you call me that, I get really embarrassed. ____20____.”
    A. Listen to them
    B. Please don’t call me that
    C. Focusing on the upside makes you a better friend
    D. If you answer telephone calls only during certain hours
    E. If your friend shares something that they’re struggling with
    F. Talking directly to your friend is the best way to solve an issue
    G. Schedule fun activities with your friends, or just find time to talk for a while
C 17. A 18. E 19. G 20. B
根据本段的小标题Be positive以及空后“If you’re someone who likes to discuss hopeless-sounding situations, that’s OK, but remember to talk about more cheerful topics, too.”(如果你是一个喜欢讨论绝望情势的人,没有问题,但是请记得也要谈论令人振奋的话题)”可知,本段讲述与朋友相处要积极乐观,因此推断C项“Focusing on the upside makes you a better friend”(关注积极的一面会让你成为一个更好的朋友)符合语境,引出下文的具体解释。
根据空后“Listening helps you learn about your friends and support them when they need it. ”(聆听帮助你了解你的朋友并且在他们需要倾听的时候支持他们)可知,此处建议学习倾听,A项“Listen to them”(倾听他们)为最佳标题。故选A项。
根据空后“don’t immediately share your experiences or advice. Instead, ask them, 'How are you feeling about it?' or 'What do you plan to do about that?'”(不要立刻分享你的经验或者建议。
根据空前“Spending time with your friends has a huge impact, whether it’s for a few minutes or for several hours.”(花时间和朋友在一起有很大的影响,无论是几分钟还是几个小时。)可知,此处指给予学生陪伴,G项“Schedule fun activities with your friends, or just find time to talk for a while”(和朋友一起安排有趣的活动,或者找时间聊聊天)刚好对应前面和朋友呆在一起。故选G项。
根据空前“For example, if your friends have given you an embarrassing (令人尴尬的) nickname, pull them aside and say,I know you’re trying to be funny, but when you call me that, I get really embarrassed.”(例如,如果你的朋友给了你一个令人尴尬的昵称,那就把他们拉到一边,说,“我知道你在努力变得有趣,但是当你那样叫我的时候,我觉得很尴尬”)讲述朋友称呼你绰号让你尴尬,你可以告诉他你会尴尬,请他不要称呼,因此推断B项“Please don’t call me that”(请不要那样叫我)与前句之间存在因果关系,符合语义逻辑。

For as long as I could remember, I had wanted to travel into the Amazon jungle. During the last summer break at university, I decided to travel there. I didn’t have much money. So I found the least expensive flight to Lima, Peru. Once there, I planned on traveling to the town of La Merced. To get there, however, I had to take a taxi for the next fourteen hours.
By the time I reached La Merced, I found a hotel and asked the man at the front desk if there were any travel routes into the jungle. His simple answer was “no”. In fact, there was no way to go farther into the jungle except by hiring a boat to travel down the Amazon. However, I found that an impossible choice.
At that point, I decided to go out and get something to eat. I had walked less than a minute from the hotel when a rainstorm swept across the town. I raced ahead to the closest restaurant to get out of the rain.
I took a table by myself and ordered a meal. I was very tired. I was also feeling sorry for myself. I had flown down to Peru and then taken a fourteen—hour journey in a taxi only to discover there was no way to get into the jungle.
Then, I saw an old man. He headed over to my table. “Hi, my name’s Fritz,” he said in English. With a smile, I introduced myself and we talked for half an hour. I told him my story. He could see I was tired and unhappy, and his eyes softened as he listened.
“Come with me and stay with me and my wife Helga at our home in the jungle. We have a coffee plantation (种植园) there. You can stay as long as you’d like. At six o’clock tomorrow morning, I’ll pick you up at the hotel and take you on a trip into the jungle,” Fritz said.
“Thank you very much,” I said. “Six o’clock tomorrow morning.”
Honestly, I didn’t expect he would appear.
    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

For the next five days, I was treated as a special guest in his home.

At 6:00 the next morning, I heard a car honking (呜喇叭) outside my hotel. I looked out and found Fritz sitting in a truck with a big smile. I hopped into his truck, and we were off. Within minutes, we were out of La Merced and into the jungle. The road quickly became a rough dirt road. Branches swept over the windows and frightened birds took flight as we drove through forests. After a two-hour adventure, we emerged into a clearing with a wooden house and a large vegetable garden.
For the next five days I was treated as a special guest in his home. Fritz’s wife Helga prepared meals for us. Fritz was more than anxious to show me around his coffee plantation. Their warmth and generosity were imprinted on my heart. When it came time to leave, Fritz drove me back to La Merced. As I said goodbye, I felt a wave of sadness wash over me. I realized I’d probably never see them again. I’d never forget the kindness of Fritz and Helga, and the amazing days I spent in their home.
