Every day, little Laika searched for food and shelter through the streets and markets. One day, a man was approaching her and held out some food in one hand. Laika sniffed (闻) and slowly crept (爬) towards the treat. Whoosh! Laika was caught in the dogcatcher’s net. She struggled to get free but it was no use. The scientists needed homeless dogs for some tests.
Life in the laboratory was difficult. Machine after machine, the scientists tested how Laika would handle the situation. The scientists liked Laika as she always stayed calm and did whatever they asked her to. Soon, Laika became one of the three dogs considered for a special mission in space. A rocket would be launched in less than a month and there would be a dog on board. No person or animal had been to outer space. Vets and scientists were unsure if it was safe. Dr. Vladimir Yazdovsky recalled that before heading to the launch pad, he took the dog home to play with his children. “I wanted to do something nice for her. I was afraid she had little time left to live.”
In October 1957, the rocket was ready. A special space suit was made just for Laika. The scientists said a teary goodbye and wished Laika good luck. Then, they put her in a tiny cabin in the rocket that was specially set up for her. Soon the engines roared to life. The noise was deafening and Laika’s heart pounded. However, there was no turning back.
A small crowd watched as the gleaming rocket sped up through the sky and out of sight. People across the country cheered for the world’s first true astronaut who carried on such a difficult and dangerous job. This tiny hero paved the way for many human astronauts to come. After a few other flights with dogs, the Soviet Union put the world’s first human—Yuri Gagarin—into space on April 12, 1961.
4.What can be inferred about Laika?
A.She wasn’t ready to go with the dogcatcher.
B.She wasn’t used to the life in the laboratory.
C.She had been taken good care of by its owner.
D.She didn’t get along well with the scientists.
5.Why did the man catch Laika?
A.He wanted to give her some food.
B.She was needed to play with children.
C.He wanted to keep her as a pet.
D.She was needed for scientific tests.
6.Why did the scientists say a teary goodbye to Laika?
A.They felt sorry for their strict training.
B.The loud noise would make her deaf.
C.She probably wouldn’t come back alive.
D.She would suffer heat problems in the rocket.
7.In what way was Laika’s role in space tasks important?
A.She was small enough for the space task.
B.She could get used to noisy environment.
C.She helped to make human space tasks possible.
D.She was able to continue living in the space task.

Before uploading a photo of ourselves to social media, chances are that we’ll use an app to smooth our skin, make our eyes look bigger, and lips fuller. With a couple of taps on our mobile phone, we can get a quick fix and present the “best” version of ourselves to the world. However, the problem is, when we simply edit our imperfections away, we’re also changing the way we look at ourselves.
Last month, researchers published the article Selfies—Living in the Era of Filtered (过滤的) Photographs. The article analysed photo editing apps’ bad influences on people’s self-respect and their possibility to cause appearance anxieties. The researchers also warned that such apps make it difficult to tell the difference between reality and fantasy. “These apps allow one to change his or her appearance in minutes and follow an unrealistic standard of beauty,” the article reads.
In the past, people may have compared their looks to those of famous people. But for today’s young people, beauty standards are most likely set by what they see on social media. “From birth, they are born into an age of social platforms where their feelings of self-worth can be based purely on the number of likes and followers that they have, which is linked to how good they look,” British cosmetic doctor Tijion Esho told The Independent. This is why many young people suffer an identity trouble when it comes to appearance.
“Now you’ve got this daily comparison of your real self to this fake self that you present on social media,” Renee Engeln, a professor of psychology, told the HuffPost website. Engeln further pointed out that when people spend too much time making such comparisons, they may become “beauty sick” and find it difficult to accept what they actually look like. “Because between you and the world is a mirror. It’s a mirror that travels with you everywhere. You can’t seem to put it down,” she told The Washington Post. So when we look in a real mirror, we shouldn’t think to ourselves, “Do I look as good as myself in the filtered photos?” Instead, we should think, “I feel good; I have my health.”
8.Before uploading a photo to social media, we will probably _________.
A.have an operating to make our eyes look bigger
B.use some cream to smooth our skin
C.use an app to fix our photo
D.edit our perfections away
9.What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A.In many ways, photo editing apps are beneficial to people.
B.Photo editing apps are likely to cause people’s anxieties about their appearance.
C.Photo editing apps can make people more beautiful.
D.Photo editing apps help people judge realistic beauty.
10.When it comes to appearance, why do many young people suffer an identity trouble?
A.Because they compare their looks to those of famous people.
B.Because beauty standards are set by social media.
C.Because their feelings of self-worth depend on their own likes and dislikes.
D.Because their feelings of self-worth depend on their appearance.
11.According to Engeln, what should we do?
A.We should feel good about what we actually look like.
B.We should spend more time making comparison of our real self to fake self.
C.We should take a mirror with us everywhere.
D.We should try to look as good as ourselves in the filtered photos.

Arthur Lih of Massapequa sold his first LifeVac, a device to help save people’s life, to a fire department about 18 months ago, when the Jericho Fire Department purchased 21 of the devices. Now about 10 Long Island fire departments have purchased Lih’s invention, which is designed to draw foreign objects from the throats of choking victims when procedures such as the Heimlich Maneuver (海姆立克急救法) don’t work. He has sold about 5,000 LifeVac devices in the United States and abroad since the device went on the market in August 2014.
The Freeport Fire Department is one of Lih’s clients. It bought about 25 LifeVac devices to put on trucks, as well as in chiefs’ vehicles, said Ray Maguire, the department’s executive director. “It’s an extra tool in the toolbox,” Maguire said. “I’d be surprised if anyone who sees it doesn’t purchase it. It’s that tool you may only need once, but it’s the tool you really want in case you need it. It’s affordable. I have it in my car. I have one at home, too.”
Dr. Lee Smith at Northwell Health said that if a choking victim can’t breathe, he or she becomes a candidate for the Heimlich. If the Heimlich doesn’t work, the victim would probably lose consciousness because of a lack of oxygen.
A challenge for any new medical device is convincing potential users that it works and is safe. In tests, the LifeVac successfully removed an obstruction (阻塞物) from the throat of a dead human body on the first try 49 out of 50 times, according to an August research article in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine.
Lih invented the product in his garage, inspired after he went with a friend to a hospital while the friend’s mother was going through tests. The friend said the last time he was there, a 7-year-old child had choked to death on a grape.
12.What’s the function of the LifeVac device?
A.To put out the fire. B.To remove foreign objects.
C.To design procedures. D.To treat victims’ throats.
13.What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the invention?
A.Its target users. B.Its practical necessity.
C.Its major advantages. D.Its reasonable price
14.What inspired Lih to invent the product?
A.A kid’s death. B.His client’s suggestion.
C.A garage accident. D.Material rewards.
15.What is the text mainly about?
A.A productive inventor. B.A convincing cure.
C.An anti-choking device. D.An important toolbox.
Why is Art so Powerful?
Perhaps the simplest answer to this question is that art touches us emotionally.
Art is powerful because it can potentially influence our culture, politics, and even the economy. When we see a powerful work of art, you feel it touching deep within your core, giving us the power to make real-life changes.
It has the power to educate people about almost anything. 16 During the pandemic, some artists created vivid and impressive paintings to spread the message of wearing a mask, which was well received by the whole public.
It breaks cultural, social, and economic barriers. While art hardly really solves poverty or promotes social justice on its own, it can be used as a fair playing field for conversation and expression.
17 Therefore, anyone can learn to appreciate art regardless of their social status, economic standing, or political background.
It accesses higher orders of thinking. Art doesn’t just make you absorb information. 18 This is why creativity is a form of intelligence—it is a special ability that unlocks the potential of the human mind. 19
20 Many times in history we have heard of people being criticized, threatened and even killed because of their artwork. Those responsible for these reactions, may it be an aggressive government, take these measures against artists knowing how much their works can affect the politics in a given area. In the hands of good people, however, art can be used to give back hope or offer courage in a society that’s undergoing a lot of hardships.
A.Art, at its simplest, is a form of communicating with each other.
B.The truth is that people have recognized how powerful art can be.
C.It presents information in a way that could be absorbed by many easily.
D.Rather, it makes you think about current ideas and inspire you to make your own.
E.Everyone can relate to art because everyone has emotions and personal experiences.
F.Art may seek to bring about some particular emotion to relax and entertain the viewers.
G.As a matter of fact, studies have shown that exposure to art can make you better in other fields.

Winter break was approaching, and all Scott wanted to do was go snowboarding. Unfortunately, Scott's parents had different plans. They had booked a week-long tropical cruise Scott hated warm weather and asked if he could just stay at his best friend's house so he could snowboard every day at the local mountain. His parents didn't want to hear anything of it. He kept debating them about the topic, but they would not change their minds. Family time was important to them, and it was tradition that they spend winter break together.
The week of the cruise arrived, and Scott continued to mumble (咕哝) his complaints as he and his family left their house to head south. Scott's dad told him that he would only make the vacation worse for himself if he didn't change his attitude and open his mind to a new experience. Scott still couldn't stop thinking about all of the snow he was leaving behind.
When they arrived at the port to board the ship, Scott had a hard time admitting that he was actually impressed with the size of the ship. He had seen the brochures but seeing the ship in person was a whole different animal. Then he remembered that the brochure said something about a surfing pool. Maybe surfing would be somewhat like snowboarding. After all, it involved riding a board.
Scott climbed aboard the ship with his parents, and then they walked around to check everything out. He couldn't believe how fancy the accommodations were. The dining room looked like a royal hall; the game room had all of his favorite games; the ship's deck (甲板) had several different swimming pools for different purposes. Then Scott saw the surfing pool. It was incredible. It wasn't a big pool, but it had big waves, and the young man who was demonstrating how to ride the waves made it look like a ton of fun.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Scott asked his parents if he could try surfing.

17.由后文“Therefore, anyone can learn to appreciate art regardless of their social status, economic standing, or political background.”(因此,无论社会地位、经济地位或政治背景如何,任何人都可以学会欣赏艺术。)
18.由上文“It accesses higher orders of thinking. Art doesn’t just make you absorb information.”(它进入了更高层次的思维。
19.由上文“This is why creativity is a form of intelligence—it is a special ability that unlocks the potential of the human mind.”(这就是为什么创造力是一种智力,它是一种特殊的能力,可以释放人类思维的潜能。) G. As a matter of fact, studies have shown that exposure to art can make you better in other fields.(事实上,研究表明,接触艺术可以让你在其他领域变得更好。)
20.由下文“Many times in history we have heard of people being criticized, threatened and even killed because of their artwork.”(在历史上,我们多次听说人们因为他们的作品而受到批评、威胁甚至被杀害。)

A. custom习惯;B. games游戏;C. language语言;D. characters文字。根据本段第一句中“Born in America, I spoke English, not Chinese, the language of my ancestors (祖先).”
A. ahead向前;B. around四周;C. aside一边;D. along沿着。
A. before之前;B. when当……
A. time时机;B. study学习;C. success成功;D. attempt尝试。 故选A。
A. cared about关心;B. argued with争论;C. laughed at嘲笑;D. asked after探问。由本句中“You can’t even buy a fish in Chinatown.”
A. at times有时候;B. from now从现在起;C. right now立刻,马上;D. in time及时。
A. reviewed复习;B. repeated重复;C. spelled拼写;D. kept保持。
A. stand货摊;B. farm农场;C. pond池塘;D. market市场。根据后文““I’d like to buy some fresh fish,” I shouted to the fishman. But he _____9_____ my English words and turned to serve the next customer.” 故选A。
A. ignored忽略;B. forgot忘记;C. doubted疑惑;D. guessed猜想。由第二段中“You can’t even buy a fish in Chinatown”及本句中“turned to serve the next customer”可知,这个卖鱼人没有在意作者说的话,即无视,不理睬。故选A。
根据前文“But he _____9_____ my English words and turned to serve the next customer. The laugh of the people behind increased with their impatience.”及后文“the breath of the dragon on my back grew stronger”可知,每过一秒,作者都很生气了。故选D。
A. leading引领;B. allowing允许;C. persuading说服;D. forcing迫使。根据前文“the breath of the dragons on my back grew stronger — my blood boiling”可知,作者被激怒了,因此强迫自己大声喊出要买的东西。故选D。
A. bright明亮的;B. red红的;C. pale苍白的;D. blank空白的。
根据后文“except for the $20 bill I held tightly in my pocket.”
A. service服务;B. risk冒险;C. home家;D. root根。由本段中“They’re Chinese. 这与后面的“Instead, I was the joke”形成对比。feel right at home意为“感觉自在”,故选C。
A. thrown扔掉;B. reflected反映;C. divided划分;D. lost丢失。

故填was observed。
故填As。
故填It。
故填to get。
故填which/that。
故填the。
