As a French graduate wh has taught fr mre than twenty-five years, I believe I have sme idea f why the failure is s ttal. 55 the faults already fund ut in the educatin system as a whle — such as child-centred learning, the “discvery” methd, and the lw expectatins by teachers f pupils — there have been several serius 56 which have a direct effect n language teaching.

Anther imprtant errr is mixed-ability teaching, r teaching in ability grups s 58 that the mst able grups are 59 and are bred while the least able are lst and 60 bred. Strangely enugh, few head teachers seem t be in favur f mixed-ability schl ftball teams.
Prgress depends n memry, and pupils start t frget immediately they stp having 61 lessns. This is why many peple wh attended French lessns at schl, even thse wh gt gd grades, have frgtten it a few years later. 62 they never need it, they d nt practice it.
Mst American schls have accepted what is inevitable and 63 mdern languages, even Spanish, frm the curriculum. Perhaps it is time fr Britain t d the same, and stp 64 resurces n a subject which few pupils want r need.

The traditinal tent cities at festivals such as Glastnbury may never be the same again. In a victry f green business that is certain t appeal t envirnmentally-aware music-lvers, a design student is t receive financial supprt t prduce ec-friendly tents made f cardbard that can be recycled after the bands and the crwds have gne hme.
Majr festivals such as Glastnbury thrw away sme 10,000 abandned tents at the end f events each year. Fr his final year prject at the University f the West f England, James Dunlp came up with a material that can be recycled. And t cpe with the British summer, the cardbard has been made waterprf.

Fr music events, the cardbard huses will be rdered nline and put up at the sites by the Myhab team befre the festival-gers arrive and remved by the cmpany afterwards. They can be persnalized and the cmpany will ffer reductins n the expense if peple agree t sell exterir (外部的) advertising space.

An interview with Wyntn Marsalis, a nted jazz musician
    80.
There were the lder jazz musicians wh hung arund ur huse when I was yung. I saw hw much they practiced, hw serius they were abut their art. I knew then I had t wrk just as hard if I wanted t succeed. Of curse, my father inspired me a lt, and many teachers tk the time t nurture my talent and the talents f ther students in ur schl.
    81.
Yes. We’ve dne such a pr jb with music educatin because, as a sciety, we haven’t maintained the kind f educatin that a true artist and musician needs. Yung peple haven’t been able t equate rmance and talent with music. Fr instance, mst f the peple wh make it in the music industry tday have t lk gd. Hw they sund is secndary. Sarah Vaughan, Bessie Smith, Ella Fitzgerald — thse big, rmantic queens f jazz music wuldn’t make it in tday’s music industry, and that’s a shame. We need t teach yung peple abut the alternatives.
    82.
Arund the wrld peple make music that, if yu listen carefully t it, sunds a little like the cadence f their language. I’d call it flk music. When I’m away frm hme, I make a pint f listening t reginal flk music, nt what’s n the radi.
    83
The same music is n the radi all ver the wrld, and the American sund is verwhelming. Even the pp music that’s prduced and created in freign cuntries has that American beat, that underscre f funk. As a musician, I’m nt interested in hearing recycled versins f the same genre ver and ver. Any music that desn’t have a develpment sectin just isn’t interesting t me.
    84.
The music press has s much t intrduce these days, and jazz is just a small fractin f it. Because sme peple are intimidated by jazz, they dn’t cver it unless it’s a big name. new jazz musicians dn’t get much f break. A lt f editrs dn’t say anything abut jazz these days unless it’s Marsalis. That’s a shame. What VH1 is ding with their Save the Music campaign is phenmenal. They’re getting all these instruments ut t needy kids. It’s the kind f thing all netwrks shuld be ding.
