Doing experiments is one of the most interesting things about studying chemistry. In some countries, it’s often teachers who do the experiment in the front of the class with students watching. But in the UK, students take action by themselves.
Mrs. Zurolo, my chemistry teacher, usually gives us a piece of instruction paper the night before the laboratory class and lets us read it. During the class, she first goes over the steps and then puts us into groups of two to do the experiments. What’s special is that for every laboratory class, Mrs. Zurolo switches everyone’s laboratory partner so that we can work with different classmates.
The class is often filled with screams and laughs. Once we tried to burn chemicals (化学品) and watch the colors of the fires. Different chemicals produced different colors of fires, including bright orange and dark green. Many students in my class were very surprised. “Wow! That’s so beautiful!” they screamed. Then they excitedly took pictures with their phones, posted them online and sent them to friends.
After finishing an experiment, we need to write a laboratory report that includes the steps, our watching and the final results. If there is a mistake in the experiment, we need to analyze why it happens and what we should do to avoid it next time. The reports are important. They are marked and make up about 25 percent of our term grade.

Having a roommate (室友) can be one of the best experiences at school, or, easily, one of the worst. In order to have a good relationship with your roommate, please follow these suggestions to avoid the common mistakes.
Talk things out. Communication is the key. If something happens, sit down with your roommate and have a face-to-face conversation. I’ve seen roommates have a bad relationship because something happens and, instead of talking to each other, the two start talking about their roommates behind their backs. This will create embarrassing situations and unhappiness.
Don’t spread rumors. If you hear something bad about your roommate, find a proper way of asking him or her about it by yourself. If you’re not sure how to talk to him or her about it, ask a trusted friend for advice.
Return the care. Good roommates should care about each other when you’re in trouble. And you should listen patiently when your roommate shares a problem with you. Be sure you are as helpful as your roommate, because he or she will take notice and feel good.
Ask before you take. If you want to keep a good relationship, show your roommate that you have respect (尊重) for what is his or hers by asking first, such as food, clothes and anything else. Even if you both agree to share everything, you should still ask.
Clean up after yourself. This should go without saying. Don’t be lazy. Or, at least, don’t throw your clothes and rubbish everywhere. Some people I’ve seen at school are messy like that. You don’t need to clean your room and keep it tidy all the time. But you should think about how your roommate feels.
61. What should you do when a problem happens between you and your roommate?
A. Tell your teachers. B. Have a face-to-face talk.
C. Avoid talking with your roommate. D. Talk about your roommate behind his or her back.
62. If you hear something bad about your roommate, you should ________.
A. ask your parents for advice B. spread it to your classmates
C. ask your roommate about it in person D. believe it without asking your roommate
63. According to the passage, what should you do if you want to eat your roommate’s food?
A. Share what you have with your roommate. B. Tell your roommate after you have eaten it.
C. Buy the same kind of food to your roommate. D. Make sure your roommate allows you to do so.
64. The underlined word “messy” in the last paragraph probably means ________.
A. tidy B. untidy C. clean D. friendly
65. What can be the best title (标题) of this passage?
A. How to Return the Care of Your Roommate B. How to Communicate with Your Roommate
C. How to Consider Your Roommate’s Feelings D. How to Keep a Good Relationship with Your Roommate
61. B 62. C 63. D 64. B 65. D

How do you feel when your teacher asks you to work with other students in groups? Do you like to work together with others or work alone?
The Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) did a survey of students’ ability to work together in groups. They found that top students who do well on tests by themselves are better at working with other people. The finding was true for many countries. Students in Japan, South Korea, Finland and Canada, where test scores are high, also do well in working together to solve problems.
But this was not true for every country. The collaborative (合作的) skills of top students in China, who also have high scores, are not high. “One reason might be that Chinese parents and teachers pay too much attention to grades,” said Zhao Zhongxin, the president of the Chinese Family Education Association (CFEA). “Students have a lot of exam pressure and they think school is a place for competition.” “However, collaborative skills are very important for preparing students for today’s society,” he added. “Luckily, more Chinese parents and teachers are realizing the importance of this and are thinking of ways to help students improve them.”
Another interesting finding from the PISA survey was that girls are better than boys at working together. They said girls are more willing to listen to others’ opinions.
PISA also found that the classroom environment may influence how well students work with others. In classes where there are a lot of activities that require communication, such as class discussion, students like to work with others.
66. The survey of students’ ability to work together in groups was carried out by ________.
A PISA B. CFEA C. Canada D. South Korea
67. According to the passage, tops students in Finland ________.
A. prefer to work by themselves B. are good at working with others
C. like to learn with the help of teachers D. don’t have the ability to work together in groups
68. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A. Chinese students should have fewer exams. B. School shouldn’t be a place for competition.
C. Collaborative skills haven’t got any attention in China. D. Chinese students’ collaborative skills should be improved.
69. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Boys are better at working together than girls. B. We should create proper classroom environment.
C. Chinese top students can hardly work together with others. D. We should always work together with others instead of working alone.
