Good morning, everyone. It is nice to deliver a speech titled “Be smart online learners” .

Nowadays, with the rapid development of the Internet, online learning brings us significant advantages in furthering our study. ①For instance, its flexibility enables us to learn at our own pace and learn repeatedly until we master what we are learning. ②However, online learning presents challenges, the biggest of which is low efficiency caused by a lack of self­discipline. Therefore, I would like to recommend ways to be smart online learners. ③Closing other social media comes first. Advance planning and good time management will also contribute to our productivity.

Nowadays, hi­tech has been impacting on our daily life greatly.

Take visiting museums for example. They are not merely places of looking and learning any longer. Thanks to modern technology, they allow visitors to participate and interact with exhibits, instead. Last summer, I went on a visit to the Shanghai Natural History Museum, where I experienced its immersive multi­media display for the first time. I really got a kick out of walking into history, experiencing the rise and fall of human civilisation in person.

Apparently, it is the advance of technology that is making static exhibits more interesting and attractive.

“Are you ready for our walk？” Grandma asked the usual question every Friday evening.[悬念1]

“Of course, we are！” we shouted excitedly, ready to talk about the end of the week and fill Grandma in about our week.

Growing up, my sisters and I always knew Grandma had heart problems and couldn't do anything hard, but we did know she would do anything to spend more time with us. Whether it was a wander around the block or a walk to the library, Grandma was there by our side.

When I was going into sixth grade, we were told that Grandma only had 2% heart function. Her heart wasn't benefiting her anymore, but she found out that there was a way to live longer: an IVAD. It is a heart pump (起搏器) that replaces the heart, basically, a battery instead of a heart and it's connected to a battery pack by a tube that comes out of the side. Grandma would become a robot with no heart! The Toledo Hospital, the only hospital near us that could do this surgery, offered to do it for Grandma. She, obviously, agreed.

The grey morning of the surgery was rough for our family, as we woke up bright and early to drive to the hospital.[悬念2] That car ride left me with worried thoughts racing through my mind: Will Grandma be okay? Will we ever take another walk around the block?

When we arrived at the hospital, we knew exactly where to go, as we'd been there many times before. After going through those familiar doors and up the stairs, my mum and I walked up to the nurses' desk and asked for Grandma.

“Oh, Mary？” A nurse answered. “She's one of the nicest patients we've had.”[悬念3] Then she directed us to the waiting room and told us that only two of us were permitted to go into the ward (病房) at a time to say goodbye to Grandma before she went in for surgery.

一、理清文章大意

The last two people were Grandpa and me. Entering the room, I saw Grandma sitting on the bed with a blanket around her. I ran forward and gave her the biggest hug with tearful eyes. Grandma, holding me tightly in her arms, said, “I know there's a chance I won't make it, but I love you forever.” Grandpa patted Grandma on the back and comforted her, “Don't worry, honey. We are all waiting for you here.” Grandma nodded with her usual smile. Then she was wheeled away, leaving us waiting and praying anxiously.

Finally, after the longest morning of my life, the doctor entered the waiting room, smiling. “Mary is out of surgery. You're allowed to visit her as long as you're quiet，” he said. Relief swept over my body and tears began rolling down my face. Once we walked into the room, there lay Grandma, looking peaceful yet painful with so many tubes attached to her. I felt so shocked but so happy. Grandma would be okay. She was taking the first step to becoming better and going on another walk with us one day.

1. 使用恰当的修饰词让描写更加生动。

A worried call came into Jimmy Gill's bar this past March. A newly married woman who had spent the afternoon at the beach bar couldn't find her wallet. She didn't care about her ID, credit cards, or $150 in cash — but her wedding ring was put inside.

Gill didn't like the idea that a theft could have occurred at his place. So he set out to find the wallet. He spent hours scanning footage (影片片段) from 16 different surveillance (监控), cameras, watching the woman's every step in the bar until she went to sit on a bench outside and left when her ride arrived. Within minutes, a young man in a jacket approached the bench, quickly put something in his pocket, and walked off. Within hours, Gill got a text from 17­year­old Rivers Prather, who'd heard about the post from one of his friends. Prather admitted having taken the wallet and told Gill he'd done it because he hadn't eaten in two days. He said he saw the ring but thought it was fake, so he took the money and threw the wallet off the dock (码头) into the ocean. Then he bought a sandwich.

Gill, unsure whether he believed Prather, told the teen to meet him at the dock. There, they got to talking, and Prather revealed that he wasn't getting along with his family and had been living in the woods for a week. Gill, a father of two with another on the way, looked closely at Prather — his small build, his pale cheeks — and saw him for what he was: more of a kid than a criminal.

But the police were already on the case, and because of the missing ring, Prather could be facing charges. “He would be going to jail，” Gill says. “I had to help him somehow.”

Suddenly a diver came out of the water. In his hand was the wallet, and inside was the ring. Cheers broke out in the crowd. When Gill called the wallet's owner, the woman burst into tears. She was more than delighted and promptly dropped the charge against the Prather for stealing the ring. But it wasn't over for Gill. He'd been troubled about Prather sleeping in the cold woods. Gill knew his home was big enough to give Prather a place to live in for a while. He told the teen he could stay with his family until the boy got on his feet again.
