Wendy heard a sound from far away; it was the sound of a large boat.
Wendy was afraid and wanted to awake the sleeping boys, but she didn’t want them to swim just after eating lunch, so she did not.
Luckily, Peter could feel danger even when he was sleeping. He woke up and jumped to his feet. “Pirates!” he shouted and the children all awoke afraid.
“Swim!” Peter ordered. The boys all quickly jumped into the water and swam away.
The pirate ship moved closer and closer to the rock. Starkey and Smee were on it, and so was the Indian Tiger Lily. Smee had caught her as she was climbing onto their ship with a knife in her mouth. They tied her up with rope and threw her down onto Death Rock.
Peter and Wendy swam under the pirate ship so that no one could see them. Wendy felt a great pity for the Indian girl and did not want to see her die. Peter felt angry because the pirates did not fight fairly. Many pirates bad fought against just Tiger Lily.
Peter planned to save Tiger Lily. He could have waited until the pirates left before saving her, but Peter never did anything the easy way.

“Hey, Smee!” he called.
“I hear the captain,” said Smee to Starkey. “He must be swimming out to the ship to meet us.”
“Hey, Captain, we tied up Tiger Lily and are leaving her on the rock to die,” Smee called out happily.
“Let her go free!” said Peter imitating Hook’s voice.
“Free?” Smee cried, feeling very shocked.
“Yes, cut the rope and let her free!”
“Why Captain?”
“Do it at once. It is my order!” the voice said seriously and loudly. “Do it or I’ll push my hook (钩) into your heart slowly!”
“This is very strange,” said Smee to Starkey. “We’d better do what Captain Hook orders,” said Starkey nervously. He was afraid of the captain’s hook.
“Okay, Captain,” Smee answered, and he took out his knife and cut the ropes that were around Tiger Lily’s hands and feet. She quickly jumped into the lake and disappeared.

①We often reach a point in our life when we should be ready for change that will help us unlock our self-improvement power. However, there’s always something staring at us right under our nose but we don’t see it. The only time we think of unlocking our self-improvement power is when everything gets worst.
②When do we realize that we need to change diets? When none of our shirts and jeans would fit us. When do we stop eating candies and chocolates? When all of our teeth have fallen off. When do we realize that we need to stop smoking? When our lungs have gone bad. We see the warning signs and signals when things get rough and difficult.
③The only time most of us ever learn about unlocking our self-improvement power is when the whole world is falling apart. We think and feel this way because it is not easy to change, but change becomes more painful when we pay no attention to it.
④Change will happen, like it or hate it. At one point or another, we are all going to finally unlock our self-improvement power not because the world says so, but because we realize it’s for our own good.
⑤Happy people don’t just accept change; they welcome it. Unlocking our self-improvement power means unlocking ourselves out of the box of thought that is just the way we are. It is such a poor excuse for people who fear change.
⑥Jane always tells everyone that she doesn’t have the courage to be around groups of people. She heard her family tell the same things about her to other people. Over the years, that is what Jane has believed. Every time a great crowd come, she steps back and locks herself up in a room. Jane not only believes in her story, but lives it!
⑦Self-improvement may not be everybody’s favorite word, but if we look at things in a different way, we might have greater chances of enjoying the whole process instead of counting the days until we are fully improved. Three sessions in a week at the gym would result in a healthier life. Reading books every day would build up knowledge. And only when we are enjoying the whole process of unlocking our self-improvement power will we realize that we’re beginning to take things light and become happy.

七、阅读回答问题
Zibo city in Shandong province has unexpectedly gone viral on Chinese social media since late February for its local barbecue specialty. In March, the small city received about 4.8 million tourists. It is certainly not the only city that offers barbecue, or even the most famous one, but why did it enjoy such great popularity?
Zhou Maosong, president of the Zibo Tourism Promotion Association, said the popularity started from the crowd-gathering effect of cultural and tourism activities including a music festival. Then famous people tasted the barbecue and put their experiences online attracting young people, which led to a wave of students from neighbouring cities visiting Zibo. What better way to attract adventurous and hungry college students except “tasty barbecue that makes you full within only 50 yuan!”
However, Zibo did not fall into the trap of easy fame that dies fast where sellers cheat buyers on price and quality for the most money in the shortest time. A blogger on Douyin took an electronic scale to ten barbecue stands in Zibo to test if he would be offered less food. It turned out that not a single one was caught short of weight and some owners even offered him local snacks for free. Local people’s honest and friendly behaviour touched even more people online and again lifted the city’s popularity.
Zibo’s successful story has raised a heated discussion about hometown cultural symbols on Weibo. People post about their cities’ unique dishes, places, etc, hoping their hometown may be the next Zibo.
