Brownie and Spotty were neighbor dogs who met every day to play together. Like pairs of dogs in most any neighborhood, these two loved each other and played together so often that they had worn a path through the grass of the field between their houses.
One evening, Brownie’s family noticed that Brownie hadn’t returned home. They went looking for him with no success. Brownie didn’t show up the next day, and, despite their efforts to find him, by the next week he was still missing.
For several days, Spotty showed up at Brownie’s house alone, barking, crying and generally pestering(纠缠) Brownie’s family. Busy with their own lives, they just ignored the nervous little neighbor dog.
Finally, one morning Spotty refused to take “no” for an answer, keeping bothering Ted, Brownie’s owner. Spotty followed Ted about, barking insistently, then darting toward a nearby empty lot and back, as if to say, “Follow me! It’s urgent!”
Eventually, Ted followed the anxious Spotty across the empty ground as Spotty stopped to run back and bark encouragingly. The little dog led the man under a tree, past clumps of trees, to a desert place a half mile from the house. There Ted found his beloved Brownie alive, lying in the bottom of a deep hole with one of his hind leg injured. Then Ted noticed something quite remarkable. Spotty had done more than simply led Brownie’s human owner to his. trapped friend. In a circle around the injured dog. Ted found plenty of dog food and realized that Spotty had been feeding Brownie that week!
Spotty had been visiting Brownie regularly, in a single minded quest to keep his friend alive by giving up his own comfort. Spotty had evidently stayed with Brownie to protect him from being killed, sleeping next to him at night to keep him warm and comforting him to keep his spirits up.

Are you the kind of person who hated school? Or are you more like Michael Nicholson, who can’t stop learning? He currently has 30 degrees including 22 master’s and a doctor’s degree! If you’re also crazy about studying, you might be a philomath-a person who loves to learn and study. The word comes from Greek with “phil” meaning “a lover of” and “math” meaning “learning”.
Humans are all philomaths to an extent-our brain is born to be curious. We want to learn and understand, partly to make sense of the world but also because of something called neoteny. This is a term that refers to the youthful characteristics of humans being remained into adulthood. One of these characteristics is neuroplasticity, which helps our brains stay flexible-this gives us the ability to learn throughout our lives. Many creatures which are close to us, like primates(灵长类), can’t do this and only learn during their youthhood.
But for every person who loves learning, there are plenty who can’t stand it. Lots of people remember their school days as being boring or even pointless. Why is this? Educational experts have suggested that if an idea is too dull or too difficult to understand, it becomes harder to connect old and new ideas together. If that is the case, we lose interest and take in less information. This negative experience of education at school may lead to people avoiding learning opportunities in later life.
So, don’t let a negative educational experience prevent you learning something new as an adult. Take advantage of your biology and discover your inner philomath. Who knows what you could achieve?
28. Why does the author mention “Michael Nicholson” in paragraph 1?
A. To lead to a topic. B. To introduce a figure. C. To present a rule. D. To raise a question.
29. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Humans can be lifelong learners. B. Creatures like primates can’t learn.
C. Humans are born to know the world. D. Creatures have different learning abilities.
30. What may kill humans passion for later learning according to the text?
A. Less learning opportunities. B. Old memories of school days.
C. Ways to connect old and new ideas. D. Bad education experiences when young.
31. What does the author intend to do by writing this text?
A. To praise people who can't stop learning.
B. To make it clear to people what is a philomath.
C. To explain why some people don’t like studying.
D. To encourage people to be passionate in learning.
D
Recently I was watching a talk show hosted by a comedian called Trevor Noah from South Africa. The part which struck me most was his advice about travelling. He said, “The one thing yo u will never waste your money on is travelling. Travel broadens the mind. It is the antidote to ignorance(无知).” In my opinion this statement should be everyone’s life motto(座右铭).
This year I’ve had the opportunity to do a lot of travelling around Europe and it has shown me first hand how much you can learn and develop by visiting different places. It is so wonderful to be able to go to a different country. listen to the different languages, try local food and experience the different culture.
I’ve personally noticed how different I am since I started exploring more. It involves being able to find good train or plane tickets, getting yourself to the airport, not to mention trying to find your way around a completely new city. While it can be scary at first, after a few trips you realize that Google Maps is your best friend and it really isn’t that difficult to figure out public transport. Travelling also helps you develop your organization skills! It is basic to figure out how to get to different tourist attractions and plan your time wisely. However, it is also nice to learn to relax. On top of that, hotels are a great way to meet new people from all around the world. It is fantastic when young people from different parts of the world come together; I’ve met so many strange and wonderful people this way.
As far as I can see, travel as much as possible, because the experiences you will gain from travelling can’t be taught at school and they will change your life.
32. What do the underlined words “antidote to” mean in the first paragraph?
A. Replacement of. B. Development of. C. Treatment for. D. Agreement to.
33. How will the author describe his trip to Europe?
A. Busy. B. Hard. C. Rich. D. Costly.
34. What has happened to the author since he began traveling?
A. He has become more confident and independent.
B. He has developed a skill to select tourist attractions.
C. He has found it hard to figure out public transport.
D. He has made many friends from all over the world.
35. Which section is the text most likely to appear in a newspaper?
A. News. B. Education. C. Opinions. D. Health
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

Most people assume that the human brain is set on “automatic”-that means it learns all by itself. 36 We need to train ourselves to actively take part in the learning process. These kinds of learning behaviours are called “active learning”.
Listen to the outer voice. There are two kinds of voices: the inner voice and the outer voice. Your inner voice expresses your personal opinions, while the outer voice tells you about opinions from what you hear. 37 If you keep paying too much attention to it, you risk missing important information. Instead, active learners are open-minded and focus on what the speaker is saying, not on what their brain is saying.
Asking questions is the easiest way to promote active learning. When you get information from someone, ask questions about the topic. The answers will lead you to further learning, and the act of working out questions will help you achieve a higher level of understanding. 38
Get to the truth. 39 . They attempt to find the truth at the heart of each idea. Even when an idea sounds entirely unlikely, there may be an aspect of it that is based on truth. So if someone says dinosaurs still exist today, think about why they believe this.
40 Many people miss out on learning opportunities because they let their feelings get in the way. They ignore what is said because of who the speaker is. This goes the other way as well - do not just assume that some people are always right because of who they are or just because they are your friends.
A. Focus on the message.
B. This isn’t always true.
C. This is human nature, after all.
D. In short: Do not stop being curious.
E. Active learners do not accept everything they learn.
F. If you find your inner voice difficult to control, argue with it.
G. Your inner voice can be useful, but it can also get in the way of learning.

Chris and Paul were good friends and on the same school basketball team, The Lions. They loved basketball very much and were both huge fans of the NBA. After school, when they weren’t playing on the court which was next to their building, they were watching a basketball game on TV. Chris’s favourite player was LeBron James. Paul’s favourite player was Tyrone Bogues, although they actually agreed that they were both champions.
Bogues was only 1.6 metres tall, which made him the shortest player ever in the NBA. Guess what? Paul was only 1.6 metres tall, too! Paul knew that being shorter than other players meant that he, had to practise more. He did not miss a single practice and participated in every training. During all those hours of doing jump shots on his own, he used Bogues as his inspiration. Paul once said firmly, “If Bogues could make it, why not me?”
Their coach was not so sure. Paul had to try out many times just for making the team. He was still usually on the bench, being just a replacement, which was really tough on him. Everyone knew Paul had real skills, and was someone who worked really hard and had a strong desire to play for the team. Chris always comforted him and encouraged him, telling him not to give up. However, Paul didn’t get a chance.
This week, The Lions were playing against their main competitors, The Bears, a team whose record this season had been perfect. They hadn’t lost a single game. It would be a tough one.
Everyone of the Lions played to the best of their abilities. Suddenly, a player and Chris crashed into each other. Pain raced through Chirs’s body. His knee hurt badly. The team gathered around, looking worried. The last quarter was about to begin, and The Lions was behind by 10 points.
