After a long, cold and dry winter, life and color are starting to return. Spring is a good time for kite flying - a popular activity in China. On a sunny day with gentle wind, you'll see hundreds of colorful kites flying in the sky. They have all kinds of shapes like goldfish and swallows. Some of the shapes have special meanings. Weifang in Shandong province is known as the birthplace of kites. Weifang kite-making dates back to 2,000 years ago. According to historical record, kites were first used by soldiers to send messages or as warning signals during wartime. During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), kites started to be popular among common people as entertainment. People flew kites to remove bad luck and bring happiness.

As it spread to the West in the 100s, the kite has had a great influence on Western life. In 1782, the lightning rod (避雷针) was invented with the help of a kite. Modem aircraft(飞行器) came from kites, too. At the National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C, a board says, "The earliest man-made aircraft were the kites and missiles of ancient China."

Many animals use camouflage(伪装) to make them harder to see. Hunters do this so that the animals they want to eat don't see them, and run away. And prey animals, such as deer and zebra, use camouflage to avoid being eaten.

But why do large cats have such different patterns(图案)? Lions don't have any spots at all, but cheetahs(猎豹) have small black spots and tigers have large black stripes and orange fur.

Will Allen at the University of Bristol was interested in this question. He decided to study large cats to find out the reasons for these different patterns. To find out the answer, he also needed to talk to scientists from many different fields, such as psychology, biology, engineering and computer science. Experts from each of these areas of science helped him with his work.

His results show that there is a clear connection between patterns and environment. Cats in forests with lots of trees and plants have more complicated (复杂的) patterns than cats which live in areas without lots of trees. And cats that spend more time in trees have more irregular(不规律的) patterns than cats that hunt at night. Will explains that a cat's camouflage depends on where it lives and how it hunts. Evolution(进化) has created the most suitable pattern for each particular hunter. His studies mean we can look at a big cat's fur and predict its habitat and lifestyle.

We know many musical instruments well, such as pianos, violins, drums and so on. What about the erhu? The erhu is a traditional Chinese instrument. It is the most popular of the huqin family, and it has a long history.

The modem erhu developed from the xiqin, which was played by many ethnic minorities(少数民族) during the Tang Dynasty. In the Song Dynasty, musicians began to use the erhu to perform different kinds of music, and it became quite a popular instrument. With the rise of some forms of folk art, the art of the erhu developed quickly during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It became an important accompanying(体奏) instrument in different folk music. At present, it is used in both traditional and modem music, such as in pop, rock and jazz. It has even become a solo (独奏) instrument. One of the most famous musical pieces played on the erhu is Erquan Yingyue.

"Please take my penny (便士)," Maggie said to old Dan, the fisherman, who sat on a bench repairing his nets (网). "Please take it," she said again. Old Dan smiled，and took it. "Thank you, little girl." he said.
