Athens: More than a Summer Holiday Destination
While the Greek islands are popular for summer holidays, Athens is a year-round destination. So even if you’re flying to Greece just for the island sun, here are a few reasons to spend time in the capital too!
The Acropolis
Even if you’re not a fan of history, some of the ancient sites you just have to visit — and this is probably the most famous one in Athens. The Acropolis is an ancient city at the top of a hill, and here you’ll see the Parthenon, a temple built almost 2,500 years ago. It’s worth climbing up, too, for the views — of the sea, mountains and Lycabettus Hill rising up between the city’s apartment buildings.
The streets of Plaka and Monastiraki
If you still have energy after climbing the Acropolis, take a walk around the nearby area. Yellow and white buildings look down on the smooth stone streets of the area known as Plaka. Stop at the gift shops or take a break from the sun with a Greek coffee or a traditional meal in one of the local restaurants — or tavernas. Walk on and you’ll soon find yourself in the narrower streets of Monastiraki with its flea markets on all sides, giving you a real Greek experience.
Panathenaic Stadium
Close to the center of town and not far from the National Garden is the ancient Panathenaic Stadium, which was restored for the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. It’s also the place where the Athens marathon finishes every year, so if you like running, you too could feel like an Olympic winner!
The coast
When you’re in the center of Athens, it doesn’t feel much like a coastal city, but the sea is just a few minutes’ drive away. The beaches get better the further south you go, or you can walk by the boats in the shadow of the stylish new opera house.
21.Which of the following places is a must-go if you want to see ancient relics?
A.The Plaka. B.The Acropolis. C.Panathenaic. D.Monastiraki.
22.What can you find in the streets of Monastiraki?
A.Gifts shops and Greek café with traditional meals.
B.Narrow streets with local restaurants and souvenir stores.
C.An outdoor market where second-hand goods are sold at low prices.
D.Yellow and white buildings looking down on the smooth stone streets.
23.Where should you go to find Athens’ best beaches?
A.In the city center of Athens B.Opposite the new opera house.
C.Driving away from the country D.Going south from the city center.

Virtual reality gamers (VR game) who finished it faster than their fellow gamers also have higher levels of general intelligence and processing capacity. This was the result of a study conducted by Markus Weinmann from the University of Cologne. The results also indicate that virtual reality games can be useful supplementary (补充) human resource management tools in companies for predicting the job performance of an applicant.
Several studies have already shown that video games may indicate or even help to develop intellectual and cognitive abilities. As intelligence is one of the most commonly used predictors for job performance, video games could be interesting for the human resource management. Although many companies are increasingly using VR technology to recruit (招募) candidates, only few studies have specifically investigated whether and how VR games can be used to draw conclusions about intelligence in this area. The study contributes to bridging the gap between research and practice.
Weinmann invited 103 participants to their lab. Under controlled laboratory conditions, they played the commercial VR game “Job Simulator”and completed the short version of the intelligence test BIS-4. The researcher’s analyses show that an increase of 17% in processing capacity correlated with less time spent playing the game (by an average of 3.7 minutes).
The results are a scientific novelty, as it has hardly been possible to conduct VR studies with state-of-the-art VR hardware. There are thus few studies that have investigated the correlation between behavior in VR and intelligence, “There are already some companies that use games, so-called ‘serious games’, for recruiting. The new results are in line with this specific application of VR games and show that they can be used for recruiting,” said Weinmann.
The scientists intend to continue their research on the potential of video games for practical applications. Among other things, they are investigating how people behave in virtual world.
24.What can we learn from Weinmann’s study?
A.The results are far from satisfactory. B.The participants can play the game freely.
C.It aims to develop intellectual ability. D.It helps to combine research with practice.
25.What is Weinmann’s attitude to the result of the study?
A.Unclear. B.Intolerant. C.Favorable. D.Doubtful.
26.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.Limitations of the study. B.Possible directions for future study.
C.The present situation of the study. D.The explanation of the research method.
27.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.VR games can be used in recruitment B.VR games can indicate intelligence level
C.VR games improve applicants’ performance D.VR games have gain popularity in management

A lecturer in the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ibadan, Oyo State, Dr Olabode Badiru, has called on the government to pay more attention to food security in the country to solve the rising cost of foods.
According to Dr Badiru, farmers need fertiliser and other agrochemicals like pesticides. Insecticides and others to solve the problem of pests. All of these will cost much money. Besides that, we have the problem of insecurity that farmers are being chased away from the farm.
Dr Badiru also called on the government to address insecurity, saying farmers are afraid of going to farm. He, who gave the advice while speaking with journalists in Ibadan, urged individuals to embrace backyard farming to reduce the spending on some food items. Most of the farm machines and chemicals used by farmers are all imported, he emphasised that these may have effects on what they will produce.
Reducing the rising cost of food requires some efforts from individuals and the government at all levels, he advised, and at the individual level, backyard farming could help to re-duce the need for purchase of food. He advised Nigerians to grow vegetables and other eatable plants, raise small animals like sheep and goats and raise domestic animals in their houses. Beyond the backyards, he also said youths should be encouraged to go into farming despite the challenges involved.
The government at all levels, especially the states, must provide an enabling environment for willing citizens to engage in agriculture. Security is the key. Basic facilities, such as road and electricity, should be improved. We can start by pushing practical research products to the farms for adoption to strengthen farm productivity through a functional agricultural extension system. “Essentially, we must look for innovative ways of bringing the unit cost of agricultural production down, among other measures,” he said.

A.Catch. B.Emerge. C.Hold. D.Accept.
30.What is Dr Badiru’s attitude towards the current agricultural production environment?

31.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

China is betting on its successful hybrid rice varieties to fight food shortage in Africa.
“We’re no longer suffering from hunger,” 55-year-old Georges Ranaivomanana, a Madagascan farmer who took the lead in planting Chinese hybrid rice in his town of Mahitsy. Georges told Xinhua that he hoped that all Madagascan farmers would use the seeds to raise their living standards.
China has been helping African countries develop productive rice farming for years with its hybrid rice. For farmers on the continent like Ranaivomanana, they are “very grateful” to the Chinese as the hybrid rice is the key to better food security and higher incomes.
In May, the China National Hybrid Rice Research and Development Centre opened a research centre in Madagascar to select hybrid rice varieties based on the island nation’s diverse ecological environment, in an effort to find more productive crops for a continent long troubled by insufficient grain output.
In the northwestern Nigerian state of Kebbi, Chinese expert Wang Xuemin stood in a rice field, surrounded by green rice plants. “This year, we are using a new technology,” he said, adding that “it can significantly reduce labor and other costs.” “The land, climate and rice farming methods in Nigeria are very different from those in China. We had a lot of problems at the beginning,” said the 51-year-old who has been in Nigeria for 16 years.
In 2006, after Wang and his colleagues had sown the seeds, their field management techniques and large-scale farming equipment could not adapt to the operating environment, and hundreds of hectares of rice fields were almost completely taken over by weeds. “We came to realize that blindly copying the Chinese model is not feasible (可行的). It is necessary to constantly innovate our techniques to fit the local situation in Africa,” he said.
After more than ten years of research and innovation, the Nigerian farm now becomes a major training and mechanized production centre in the country, training more than 1,000 farmers and agricultural machinery management staff.
32.What’s the attitude of African farmers about Chinese hybrid rice?
A.A little skeptical. B.Much disappointed.
C.Full of gratitude. D.Extremely curious.
33.How old was Wang Xuemin when he came to Nigeria?
A.35 years old. B.51 years old.
C.55 years old. D.67 years old.
34.What can we infer from what Wang Xuemin said?
A.Chinese technology of hybrid rice can’t be applied in Africa.
B.Different technologies should be applied to different areas.
C.Chinese experts contribute to raising African living standards.
D.Chinese technology of hybrid rice wastes more labor and costs.
35.What’s the best title of the text?
