I was on a train in Switzerland. The train came to a stop and the worker’s 6 over the loudspeaker sent a message in German, Italian, and French. I’d made the 7 of not learning any of those languages before my vacation.
Everyone started getting 8 the train and an old woman saw that I was confused and stressed. She could speak some English and told me that an accident had happened on the tracks. She asked me 9 I was trying to get, then went and talked to some workers, and 10 to tell me that we’d have to change trains three or four times to get there.
I was glad she was heading the 11 way because it would have been 12 for me to work it out on my own. 13 we went from one train station to the next, getting to know each other along the way.
She was really the sweetest woman. It was a 2.5-hour journey in total, and when we made it to the 14 destination, we got off and said our goodbyes. I had made it just in time to 15 my train to Rome. She told me she had a train to take as well. I asked her how much 16 she had to go and it 17 that her home was two hours back the other way.
She had 18 from train to train and traveled the whole way just to make sure that I made it. I was in shock. You could hardly 19 a woman spent her whole day sitting on trains and taking her hours away from her home just to help out a confused 20 visiting her country.
No matter how many countries I visit, I’ll always say the most beautiful country in the world is Switzerland.

Chinese became an official language of the UN in 1946. More and more UN offices and staff members work with the Chinese language. April 20 marks United Nations Chinese Language Day. On this day, people around the world celebrate the Chinese language. Teens has invited three Chinese learners to share stories of their studies.
Practicing Chinese with Chinese friends
I started taking a short beginners’ course in Chinese when I was in the UK. Since I came to China in 2021, I have been using an APP on my phone called Hello Chinese. I find reading the small stories on there really helpful. I first read them with pinyin and the Chinese characters and then I’ll read them again with just the characters.
Also, going out for dinner with my Chinese friends can be a good way to learn. In a social setting, I’m a bit more confident to practice speaking naturally spoken Chinese.
David House. UK
Chinese can make language simpler
When I worked at Tsinghua University, one of my jobs was translating information from Chinese to English. Each day I would find something new and interesting about Chinese. Chinese can be emotive (有感染力的) and often give out information simpler than English. For example, a Chinese sign on campus might read, “疫情期间隔坐,人人有责”. But the English sign would read: “During the pandemic, please sit apart from each other. We are all responsible for doing our part.” The English one is much longer and not as simple.
Madeleine King. Australia
Learning is fun with tongue twisters
I’ve always been amazed by tongue twisters(绕口令)in Chinese. English has its own tongue twisters, for example: “Sally sells seashells by the sea coast”. But Chinese takes it a step forward with its use of four tones (声调).
As a native English speaker, I first learned Chinese through the use of pinyin. But as I found out, even when the letters in pinyin are the same, different tones can result in different Chinese words, like 马 vs 妈. But things get harder when this is used in tongue twisters!
Can you manage this one? Fourteen is fourteen, forty is forty; fourteen is not forty, forty is not fourteen.
Patrick McCarthy. US

B. English can make people feel more emotions.
C. Chinese signs are usually simpler and shorter.
D. English is easier to speak and write than Chinese.
23. Why does Patrick think tongue twisters in Chinese are harder?

As AI art generators (生成器) take the world by storm, some people wonder if their works should count as art at all. The technology is still developing and has some problems to work out, which means there are indeed flaws to consider along with the unbelievable artwork a good artificial intelligence (人工智能) can produce.
Art is classed as the product of imagination, skill, experience, and feelings, usually meant to represent something for the public to enjoy. Artists spent time and effort putting their inner worlds onto these works. Machine intelligence also puts a lot of work into sorting through tons of data, linking someone’s tips to datasets (数据集), and trying to represent it as best as possible. The difference is that the AI is driven by instructions instead of an emotional need to express itself.
AI painters can produce over 1,000 original (原创的) works of art with every tap of the enter key on a keyboard. But a mass-produced print of the Mona Lisa is worth less than the actual Leonardo da Vinci’s painting. Why? Rareness — there’s only one of the original. Should anyone pay for these things? And if an artist puts AI works up for sale, what should the price be?
AI art includes a program imitating the work of famous artists to create a new piece according to the need of a human. But who made the artwork, the machine or its user? And can the original artists protect copyright? Such questions make the appearing of artificial intelligence and the art industry more difficult, increasing arguments against recognizing AI-generated art as marketable artistic products.
Once we’ve answered those questions, we can deal with the really big one: When an AI-generated painting wins an award, who gets the prize?

28. How is AI art different from human art?
A. It is the product of experience. B. It costs less money to produce.
C. It includes different styles of work. D. It is not a mirror of humans’ feelings.
29. Why does the writer mention Mona Lisa in the third paragraph?
A. To prove the popularity of classic artworks.
B. To present the potential trouble with the value of AI art.
C. To show the advantages of AI painters over human artists.
D. To introduce a new way of preserving art masterpieces.
30. What can we infer from paragraph 4?

B. AI art makes copyright issues more complicated.
C. Artists can create more works with the help of AI.
D. There will be fierce competition in the art industry.

When night comes, they stop under a big tree. The Tin Woodman cuts some wood and makes a fire for Dorothy. Dorothy and Toto eat some bread and the Lion goes into the forest to find something for his dinner. The Scarecrow collects some nuts for Dorothy’s breakfast. Then all of them lie down and sleep until morning.
The next day they set off again very early. They walk a few miles and then come to a big ditch. It’s very wide and very deep. There are a lot of sharp rocks at the bottom of it.
“How can we cross the ditch?” Dorothy asks her friends.
“We can’t fly over it,” the Scarecrow says. “And we can’t jump over it. So we must stay here.”
The Lion looks at the ditch and says, “I can jump over it.”
“Can you?” the Scarecrow says. “That’s good. You can take us across on your back, one by one.”
“Who wants to go first?” the Lion says.
“Me!” the Scarecrow says and he gets on the Lion’s back. The Lion jumps across the ditch easily. Then he jumps back and takes Dorothy and Toto. Finally he takes the Tin Woodman across the ditch.
Later in the afternoon, they come to a wide river.
“How can we cross the river?” Dorothy asks.
“Easy!” the Scarecrow replies. “The Tin Woodman can cut down some trees and build a raft. We can cross the river on that.”
“That’s a good idea,” the Lion says to the Scarecrow, “One would believe you had brains in your head, instead of straw!”
But it takes time to make a raft, and it’s very late when the Tin Woodman finishes it. So they find a cozy place under the trees where they sleep well until the morning. That night, Dorothy dreams of flying to the Emerald City and finding the good Wizard Oz, who would soon send her back to Kansas.

Shu Lin 's Grandpa is a children’s picture book. The book illustrated (加插图于) by British-Chinese artist Yu Rong was showcased (展乐) at the London Book Fair. It caused a heated discussion about how to better tell Chinese stories to international readers.
The book tells a story about Shu Lin, a Chinese immigrant girl. Shu Lin is starting at a new school in Britain. She stands alone in the playground and at lunchtime she eats brightly colored food by herself. She doesn’t speak English very well. The Power of an Example
It is said that a fine example has endless power. In my heart, Miss Liang, my Chinese teacher, sets a good example to me. She is so excellent that I have learned a lot from her.
Miss Liang is kind enough to give her helping hands to those in need. Her neighbor is too old to take care of himself well. Miss Liang often helps him with housework. When he falls ill, Miss Liang always looks after him carefully till he gets better.
What Miss Liang has done inspires me a lot. If everyone gives a little love, the world will become a better place. I decide to be a person like her.
