In 2018, a severe drought brought Cape Town close to "Day Zero", when it could have become the world's first major city to run out of water. Dam levels in South Africa's Western Cape fell to below a fifth of capacity and the province suffered its worst water crisis in 100 years.
"The water supply was dwindling and it just wasn't raining," recalls Thinus Booysen, a professor at Stellenbosch University, who had created a device in 2015 designed to help homeowners cut their power usage. Seeking to reduce water waste, Booysen figured he could adapt the device to measure water usage instead of electricity use.
Soon, Booysen launched a start-up, Bridging the Internet of Things (BridgloT), to develop his idea. Called Count Droputa, the device reports water, usage once a minute while many conventional devices only record data once an hour. The system uses an app in the user's cellphone and sends short messages in real time. "Within minutes, we would be able to tell the user, 'Something has burst, or something is leaking'," he says.
Then Booysen discovered that a key issue was maintenance(维修), with the poorest schools using by far the most water. Leaking toilets could waste 1, 000 liters of water per day. "We found that the biggest problems are things like children not closing taps properly, but often that would be because the taps just don't close," Booysen explains. During the test, the invention saved one school more than three million liters of water in three months. Another reduced its water usage 55 percent in four months.
Businesses including Cape Talk radio station and Africa's largest food company, Shoprite, became sponsors, partnering with the Western Cape Education Department to install(安装) the devices in 350 schools. They saved more than S2. 7 million and almost 550 million liters of water in 17 months. Booysen has looked at expanding to government buildings, hospitals and hotels. There are plans to roll out the device across Africa.

Recently, Google researchers published a paper describing results from an artificial intelligence (AI) tool, called MusicLM, built to create music. It is not the first AI music tool to launch. But the examples Google provides demonstrate musical creative ability based on a limited set of descriptive words. AI shows how complex computer systems have been trained to behave in human-like ways. Google engineers explain the MusicLM system this way:
First, a user comes up with a word or words that describe the kind of music they want the tool to create. For example, a user could enter this short phrase into the system: "a continuous calming violin backed by a soft guitar sound." The descriptions entered can include different music styles, instruments or other existing sounds. Several different music examples produced by MusicLM were published online. Some of the generated music came from just one-or-two-word descriptions, such as "jazz", or "techno". The system created other examples from more detailed descriptions containing whole sentences. In the resulting recording, the music seems to keep very close to the description. The team said that the more detailed the description is, the better the system can attempt to produce it.
In addition to generating new music from written descriptions, the team said the system can also create examples based on a person's own singing, whistling or playing an instrument. The researchers said the tool "produces high-quality music... over several minutes, while being faithful to the text conditioning signal".
Although it hasn't been released for public use, Google announced it was releasing a "high-quality dataset(数据集)" of more than 5. 500 music-writing pairs prepared by professional musicians called MusicCaps. The researchers took that step to assist in the development of other AI music generators.
The MusicLM researchers said they believe they have designed a new tool to help anyone quickly and easily create high-quality music selections. However, the team said it also recognizes some risks linked to the machine learning process
8、How does MusicLM work?
A. It adapts music from recordings.
B. It generates music from written descriptions.
C. It teaches users how to play a musical instrument.
D. It recommends songs based on a user's listening history.
9、Why did Google release the MusicCaps dataset?
A. To display the capabilities of MusicLM.
B. To allow the public to use MusicLM.
C. To help develop other AI music generators.
D. To promote the MusicCaps music-writing service.
10、What might be an advantage of using MusicLM for music creation?
A. It can improve the overall quality of music in the industry.
B. It can replace human musicians and composers.
C. It can produce music that is more complex than human-made music.
D. It can create music quickly and efficiently.
11、What is the main idea of the article?
A. Google has developed MusicLMA to create music from written descriptions and other inputs.
B. MusicLM-an example of AI systems can behave in human-like ways.
C. MusicLM can create music following written descriptions and using others as input.
D. Google has released a dataset to help develop other AI music generators.
Take a look at that tree in the local park. What might it be feeling? Could it be thinking? Experiments are exploring the idea of plant cognition(认知), even going so far as to suggest they possess some form of consciousness.
As wild as it sounds, it isn’t a new idea. The field of “plant neurobiology(神经生物学)” began in 2006, aimed at understanding how plants process information from their environment.
It is now clear that plants are capable of complex communication and can sense their surroundings, which were originally dismissed. But advocates of plant consciousness take things further and draw parallels between the electrical signaling that can be found from root to stem and that present in the nervous system of animals. They claim to show that plants are capable of intentionally choosing to perform certain behaviors, of learning and perhaps even having personalities. If plants are experiencing a conscious inner world, they argue, it becomes vital that we find ways to test and understand it.
Extending the concept of cognition to plants would mean a significant shift in our view of the uniqueness of humanity, not to mention how we treat our botanical friends, so the bar of acceptance is high. Researchers rising to the challenge are hoping to explore plants with tools usually reserved for the human brain.
The research can appear persuasive, but it is in its early stage and suffers from repeated failure. Critics say the field is a high guess and that the behaviour can be explained through inborn response.
Whether we decide that plants have cognition may come down to our ability to describe consciousness itself-something we are far from doing. But rather than dismiss the idea, we should welcome the chance to think up new ways to test our understanding of consciousness. It might just improve our grasp of the human mind. At the very least, our trees and plants should benefit from the extra attention-consciously or not.
12、What do supporters of plant consciousness believe?
A. Plants can only perform native reaction.
B. Plants can perceive their surroundings and adapt to them.
C. Plants possess the same level of consciousness as humans.
D. Plants can communicate complicatedly and choose actions deliberately.
13、What is the main challenge in accepting the idea of plant consciousness?
A. The need to develop tools to test plant cognition.
B. The dramatic change in our view of humanity.
C. The lack of evidence in the field of plant neurobiology.
D. The inability to describe consciousness itself.
14、What is the current state of research in the field of plant cognition?
A. The field is highly based on guesses and has no evidence.
B. Researchers are using tools reserved for the human brain to study plant behaviors.
C. There is not enough evidence to support the idea of plant consciousness.
D. Plants have been proven to possess a form of consciousness.
15、What is the potential benefit of studying plant consciousness?
A. Enhancing our understanding of the human brain.
B. Developing new ways to test plant behaviors.
C. Promoting our relationship with plants.
D. Proving the existence of plant cognition.

Allen was playing in his room. He heard a familiar chirping and rustling from the cage in the bedroom corner. It was his beloved Blue Finch, named Mary. The boy had cared for the bird since he was six, a gift from his mother for graduating from kindergarten and entering primary school. Now, at 12 years old, Allen had just recently celebrated his primary school graduation and was about to take another step in his life journey toward junior high school. For the past six years, Mary was his constant companion and closest friend.
As he grew up, Allen found it difficult to make friends or be close to others. Having had to move around many times and transfer schools due to his father's work in the military, Allen never felt like he truly belonged in any one place. He always knew it wouldn't be long before he would have to move yet again. The stress and pressure of a constantly mobile life also led to strain and pressure at home, leading to loud arguments and fights between his mother and father which he could hear from behind closed doors.
But, throughout all of this. Allen's closest friend and companion-the true source of stability in his life—was Mary, his finch. But Mary was more than just a simple, calm pet: whenever Allen felt sad, the bird would always be singing and chirping, almost as if she sensed how he felt and wanted to lift his spirits. And when Allen fed the bird, Mary always moved across her branch to rest against his finger, never failing to bring a smile to Allen's face. Yet, one summer day after Allen had come home after a walk at the park he found the window of his bedroom open and the door of Mary's cage open-the bird was gone. Suddenly, Allen realized that he must have left the cage open after cleaning it and forgot about the window being open on such a hot day. Upset, Allen fell down to the floor sobbing.

34、答案:
Upon hearing the noise. Allen’s mother rushed upstairs and asked what had happened. “Mary, she’s...she’s gone,” Allen sighed sadly with disappointment. “Don’t worry, honey,” said his mother, trying to convey comfort and confidence, “Let’s move together and find Mary. Six years of companion has established a close bond between both of you. She will definitely come back to her family.” Allen’s mother then kissed him fondly on the forehead and helped him back up from the floor. Hand in hand, they made their way downstairs and to the front door.
Filled with anticipation, Allen and his mother went outside to look for Mary. They called out Mary’s name, even imitating bird sounds as they walked down the street. They scanned their way down one block after another-eventually they found themselves at the entrance of the park Allen and Mary had been to multiple times. Amazingly, it was Mary that was perching atop of the bench where Allen always liked to sit in times of sorrow and loneliness. At the sight of Allen, Mary unhesitatingly spread her wings and flew, chirping all the way, into Allen’s cupped hand. His mother was right after all: Mary always found her way back to Allen’s heart.
