Our 2023 visitor season runs from 1st April to 29th October 2023. During this period we are open from Wednesday to Sunday, 2-5 pm (last entry 4 pm) as well as on bank holiday Mondays.
We welcome drop-in visitors, as well as advance bookings with a guided tour at 2 pm, 3 pm & 4 pm.
Drop-in visitors will also be offered an optional guided tour.
We encourage groups of 8 or more to book in advance and can offer private tours outside of our regular visiting hours by prior arrangement.

We want all of our visitors to enjoy their experience at Milton’s Cottage. Wheelchair access can be
provided if you contact us before your visit, and assistance dogs are welcome throughout the museum.

When I arrived at the mountaintop observatory, I was bursting with excitement. I was about to finish
my junior year studying astrophysics (天体物理). I finally felt like an astronomer. Unfortunately, as I sat alone, staring at a computer screen instead of the night sky, pressing a combination of buttons over and over to control the telescope and get back data, I had to admit: This wasn’t what I had imagined.
I had wanted to be an astronomer ever since my father gave me the DVD box set of Cosmos: A
Personal Voyage when I was a teenager. Watching Carl Sagan talk about the heavens, I thought I had
found my calling. But after my experience at the observatory, I had to face a new truth: the astronomer’s life wasn’t for me. Then where was my future, if not in astronomy?
I recalled a quantum (量子) physics class I had taken and thought that field might fit the bill. My
academic adviser was skeptical (怀疑的). I can’t blame him; I was throwing away a ton of original astronomical data to start from scratch in a new field. But I took on the challenge. I put together a proposal I was eager to pursue, and to my joy and relief, my adviser approved it.
Being able to shape and control quantum phenomena inspired me in a way astronomy did not. I also
persuaded a friend to work with me. As we talked through the project, explaining complex topics to each other and reflecting on the big picture of what we wanted to achieve, an idea dawned: I had been drawn to Cosmos not because of the subject, but because of the finesse (技巧) with which Sagan explained
mind-blowing concepts. That was the spark of inspiration I wanted to follow. I began to try out my
communication skills, working with high school physics students and tutoring in the college physics room. I got a real charge out of these experiences!
Now, in addition to conducting research in quantum engineering, I lecture at universities, run a
summer school, and work with educators.

As Brian Glick, founder of Philadelphia-based software company Chain.io, puts it, “I am not apt (倾向于) to use voice assistants for things that can have bad results.”
Take voice shopping, a feature Google and Amazon said would help busy families save time. Glick gave it a try and he’s haunted (烦扰) by the memory. Each time he asked Alexa to add a product – like
toilet paper – it would read back a long product description: “Based on your order history, I found
Charmin Ultra Soft Toilet Paper Family Mega Roll, 18 Count.” In the time he spent waiting for her to stop
talking, he could have finished his shopping, Glick said. “I’m getting upset just thinking about it,” he added.
An Amazon spokeswoman said Alexa’s understanding has improved significantly, despite
increasingly complex requests from users. For its part, Google says it’s investing in the assistant’s language understanding and speech technology to help it better deal with nuance (细微差别) and respond
in a natural way.
But there’s a deeper emotional problem at play, says Compton. In developing voice assistants, she says, companies ignored the often unspoken rules of human small talk. We use small talk to show other people that we’re on the same wavelength – it’s a quick way to signal, “I see you, and I’m safe,” Compton said.

Science fiction has always been the source of all sorts of wonderful ideas about what life might be
like in years to come. Writers, film-makers and video game designers have all turned their imaginations to
the effects technology might have on our future. Now it seems like we’re finally catching up with some of these futuristic ideas thanks to nanotechnology.
Nanoscience focuses on the study of tiny molecules – only one billionth of a meter in size. For years,
nanoscience has explored ways of applying this research to different types of technology, and recently it has begun to engender more and more diverse and fascinating developments.
Imagine a substance with the ability to heal any wound almost immediately. This is a common feature
in video games; when characters suffer injuries, a gel (凝胶) is applied which heals them and prolongs (延
长) their lives. Not long ago, it seemed impossible to recreate this in real life. But now, by extracting polysaccharide polymers (多糖聚合物) from the cell walls of plants, scientists have created a gel which
will hold a wound together and rapidly stop any bleeding without the need for pressure to be applied. Although not yet available in hospitals, this gel is likely to help medical professionals treat patients with serious injuries more effectively.
While some advances in nanotechnology might improve our health and safety, others could have the
opposite effect. In the food industry, nanoparticles (纳米粒子) are already in use to improve the appearance of products. The problem is, nanoparticles are more reactive in the body, and no tests have been done to check their safety. In effect, we are all part of a real-life experiment. Will they help or hurt? Nobody knows.
What is clear is that nanotechnology has huge potential for shaping our lives in the coming decades.
Even if we can’t see it with our eyes, we will surely see the impact on our surroundings, and perhaps our bodies. In the future, the lines between reality and science fiction are likely to become even more blurred.

always in need of more drivers.
M: What about help for individual residents? Do you arrange that at all?
W: Yes. In fact, (17) there’s Mrs. Carroll. She needs a lift to the hospital next Monday.

W: (18) Welcome to Stevenson’s, one of the country’s major producers of metal goods. Thank you for choosing us for your two weeks of work experience. My name is Julia, the managing director. Stevenson’s is quite an old company. (19) It was set up in 1923 by Ronald Stevenson who went
into the steel industry when he left school.
Stevenson’s original plan was to produce spare parts for the machine tools industry – although in fact that never happened. Shortly before the company went into production, Stevenson was given the opportunity to make goods for hospitals, so that’s what we did for the first five years.
Now some idea of what you’ll be doing during your two weeks with us. Most mornings you’ll have a
presentation from one of the managers, to learn about their department. And you’ll spend some time in each department, observing and talking to people. (20) Normally a teacher from your school will
come in each week to find out how the group were getting on, but your school isn’t able to
arrange that this year.
