What may well be the oldest metal coins in the world have been identified at an ancient abandoned city known as Guanzhuang in China. Like many Bronze Age (青铜时代) coins from the region, they were cast in the shape of spades with finely carved handles. These ancient coins existed during an in-between period between barter (以物易物) and money, when coins were a novel concept, but everybody knew that agricultural tools were valuable.
Reading about this incredible discovery, I kept thinking about the way modern people represent computer networks by describing machines as having “addresses”, like a house. We also talk about one computer using a “port” to send information to another computer, as if the data were a floating boat with destination. It’s as if we are in the Bronze Age of information technology, grasping desperately for real-world reference to transform our civilization.
Now consider what happened to spade coins. Over centuries, metalworkers made these coins into more abstract shapes. Some became almost human figures. Others’ handles were reduced to small half-circles. As spade coins grew more abstract, people carved them with number values and the locations where they were made. They became more like modern coins, flat and covered in writing. Looking at one of these later pieces, you would have no idea that they were once intended to look like a spade.
This makes me wonder if we will develop an entirely new set of symbols that allow us to interact with our digital information more smoothly.
Taking spade coins as our guide, we can guess that far-future computer networks will no longer contain any recognizable references to houses. But they still might bring some of the ideas we associate with home to our mind. In fact, computer networks — if they still exist at all — are likely to be almost the indispensable part of our houses and cities, their sensors inset with walls and roads. Our network addresses might actually be the same as our street addresses. If climate change leads to floods, our mobile devices might look more like boats than phones, assisting us to land.
My point is that the metaphors of the information age aren’t random. Mobile devices do offer us comfort after a long day at work. In some sense, our desire to settle on the shores of data lakes could change the way we understand home, as well as how we build computers. So as we cast our minds forward, we have to think about what new abstractions will go along with our information technology. Perhaps the one thing we count on is that humans will still appreciate the comforts of home.
4. Many Bronze Age coins were made into the shape of a spade because ___________.
A. a lot of emphasis was put on agriculture
B. this stylish design made the coins valuable
C. these coins also served as agricultural tools
D. the handles made the coins easily exchanged
5. Why does the author relate computers to spade coins?
A. To show they both used to be new concepts when first invented.
B. To explain abstract digital worlds are different from concrete coins.
C. To suggest computers will experience dramatic changes as coins did.
D. To highlight their same importance in our civilizational transformation.
6. What does the underlined word “indispensable” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Flexible. B. Essential. C. Wasteful. D. Alternative.
7. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

C. How Bronze Age Develops to Information Age

Are you frightened of clowns (小丑)? You are not alone. Coulrophobia, or the fear of clowns, is a widely recognized phenomenon. We set out to discover the reasons people are frightened by clowns, and to understand the psychology (心理) behind this. To do this, we designed a question form to look at how many people suffer from coulomphobia and how much they are afraid of it. The test was completed by a group of 987 people aged between 18 and 77.
More than half the volunteers (53.5%) said they were frightened of clowns at least to some degree, with 5% saying they were “extremely afraid” of them. We also discovered coulrophobia drops with age. Interestingly, we found the final explanation, of having had a fearful personal experience with a clown, had the lowest level of agreement. This shows that life experience alone is not a satisfying explanation for why people are afraid of them.
In contrast, negative (消极的) description of clowns in popular culture was a much stronger contributing factor towards coulrophobia. This is understandable because most famous clowns in books and films are designed to be terrible — such as Pennywise, the creepy (毛骨悚然的) clown from Stephen King’s 1986 novel It.
In fact the strongest factor we identified was hidden emotional signs suggesting that for many people, a fear of clowns comes from not being able to see their facial expressions due to their make-up. We cannot see their “true” faces and cannot understand their emotional purpose. So, for example, we don’t know whether they have a frown (皱眉) or a furrowed brow (眉头紧锁), which would show anger. Not being able to be aware of what a clown is thinking or what they might do next makes some of us on edge when we are around them.
8. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. The result of Coulrophobia test. B. A drop in Coulrophobia.
C. Explanations of Coulrophobia. D. Reactions from volunteers.
9. What is a clown like in popular culture?
A. Silly. B. Funny. C. Understanding. D. Horrible.
10. What does the underlined word “on edge” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Angry. B. Interested. C. Nervous. D. Proud.
11. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. A clown’s makeup can be uneasy B. This is why we’re afraid of clowns
C. Coulrophobia is no laughing matter D. This is how coulrophobia comes about
D
A team of researchers at Johannes Kepler University has found that the skin of a certain kind of mushroom can be used as a biodegradable (可生物降解的) base for computer chips. In their paper published in the journal Science Advances, the group describes how well it worked and how easily it could be cleanly got rid of after the chip was no longer useful.
Most chips used to make electronic devices are set on a base of plastic. However, unfortunately, the type of plastic used isn’t at all recyclable, which means most computer chips end up in landfills (垃圾填埋场) around the world. Previous research has suggested that this leads to 100 million tons of electronic waste added to landfills each year.
After searching for plenty of alternatives, the team in Austria came across Ganoderma lucidum, a type of mushroom that grows on dead hardwood trees. They noted that it grows a skin to cover its root-like part.
After removing some of the skin from several samples, the researchers found that it was flexible and was able to stand high temperatures. They also noted that if kept away from light and wetness, the skin would last a long time. On the other hand, if it were exposed to such conditions intentionally, it would quickly decompose. These are all features that the team thought would make for a very good chip base.
The team developed a means for placing metal electronic components onto the skin. Testing of the result showed that the skin worked nearly as well as the traditional plastic base and that it could remain undamaged after being bent repeatedly. They also found the skin could be used to make battery components. More work is required to ensure that the skin works as hoped in an industrial setting. Also, a clean process for removing the skin from the chips still needs to be found.
12. What do we learn about most computer chips?
A. They end up as electronic waste. B. They are made of plastic.
C. They are easily worn out. D. They can be completely recycled.
13. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A. How researchers carried out tests.
B What a good chip base was like.
C. Why researchers tested on mushroom skin.
D. What qualities were found about mushroom skin.
14. What follow-up research might researchers do?
A. The skin’s potential in the same setting.
B. The skin’s performance as battery components.
C. A convenient way to put electronics on the skin.
D. A clean process to get the skin away from chips.
15. What’s the writing purpose of the text?
A. To report a new discovery of mushrooms.
B. To picture the future of computer chips.
C. To show the features of mushrooms.
D. To call for nature-friendly computer chips.
