Along with firewood, rice, oil, salt, sauce and vinegar, tea is considered one of the seven necessities for life in China. Now, it has also won global recognition as a shared cultural treasure of mankind.

On Nov. 29, Chinese traditional tea processing skills and their related social practices were added to the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) list. Since ancient times, Chinese people have been planting, picking, making and drinking tea.

More importantly, China’s tea culture has formed Chinese customs. It is Chinese traditional custom that a host should welcome visiting guests with boiled tea. A poem by Song poet Du Lei reads, “I offer tea, not wine, to a guest on a cold night. When water boils on the stove, fire burns with flame bright.”

Boiling tea is one of the oldest Chinese tea brewing methods, dating back to the Tang Dynasty (618—907). Tea leaves were boiled for a long time and sometimes they were cooked together with different kinds of herbs and fruits. During this process, people can enjoy a quiet time. Later in the Ming Dynasty (1368—1644), a faster and more convenient method become more popular—steeping (冲泡).

Litterati is the name of a company that’s trying to make the world a cleaner place and doing a fine job of it. It has created an app that people can use to upload information about the litter they collect outside, such as its appearance, material and location. Shared online, this information helps to build a global data (数据) base of “litter maps”, which can influence government management and packaging design.

Jeff Kirschner is the inventor of Litterati app. He came up with the idea while walking in a northern California forest with his four-year-old daughter, who noticed a plastic kitty litter box in a river. Young as she was, she expressed her worries about the box being somewhere that it wasn’t supposed to be. This knowledge stays with Kirschner as adults -The litter problem is so huge: What’s a single person supposed to do?

That’s where Kirschner thinks an app can help. “Society’s failure to solve the litter problem has not been from lacking (缺乏) government support. There have been public service announcements, neighborhood litter walks and coastal cleanups. And these activities successfully raise public knowledge of pollution,” said Kirschner. But he believes one thing is missing from the discussion-online data-and if these are added in, people can start solving the problem in a better way.

Uploading pictures to an app shows users that they’re not the only ones picking up litter from public places. And the data has been gathered rapidly, telling a story that helps people understand who picked up what, where and when. “In San Francisco, the Litterati app was able to discover and map more than 5,000 pieces of rubbish in order to find out how much was produced by cigarettes exactly. Using this information, the city successfully doubled an existing cigarette sales tax (香烟销售税). In the Netherlands, Litterati’s data helped push brand Anta Flu to repackage its hard candies in paper, rather than non-recyclable plastic,” said Kirschner.

Litterati shows a positive we-can-do-it attitude. “Its goal isn’t to shame. It’s to provide a real way to solve the litter problem and encourage people to be part of the project,” explained Kirschner.

The expired (过期的) meat news has seriously cut down the sales and name of western fast food in China. But Arthur Han, an office worker, says that now is the best time to eat at McDonald’s in China because they are paying more attention to food safety at the moment.
