Many artists draw with pens and brushes, but few “paint” with knives. Wang Jing, a woman from Shenyang city in northeast China’s Liaoning Province, has been engaged in this art form for 27 years.

In 1995, Wang was inspired by an accidental cut by a knife on a piece of red paper, which left a white line, and believed that she may have created something out of the ordinary. Using knives and paper, she then completed a painting of a pair of peacocks that later became a source of motivation for her 27-year endeavor.

Unlike traditional paintings, onto which colors are “added”, “knife painting” requires the painter to use blades (刀锋) to take away colors on specially made coated paper. “Knife painters” apply varied pressure on the paper in different directions to create different colors and tones. “Painting on paper with knives is a delicate art and each line in the painting is as thin as a hair,” said Wang, adding that once the marks are left on the paper, they cannot be covered, so it requires the painter to be completely absorbed in the work.

The novel art form was known to few people just after Wang created it. Even Wang herself was not expecting to make it something big at the beginning. But thanks to her huge enthusiasm for the art form, she has persisted with it for the past 27 years. So far, she has completed hundreds of paintings about auspicious Chinese culture, figures, landscape, flowers and birds, of which her favorite is a 2.8-meter-long painting that depicts 20 lifelike egrets (白鹭). Wang said she will continue working in the craft and make it known across the world.

14What motivated Wang in her 27-year devotion to knife painting?

    A. The red paper.  B. The white line.

    C. The accidental cut. D. The painting of peacocks.

15What can be learned about knife painting from Paragraph 3?

    A. It takes away colors. B. It needs painters’ focus.

    C. It creates thin marks. D. It applies varied pressure.

16What does the underlined word “novel” probably mean in the last paragraph?

    A. Original. B. Valuable. C. Traditional. D. Complex.

17Which of the following can best describe Wang?

    A. Optimistic and caring. B. Creative and ambitious.

    C. Enthusiastic and humble. D. Persistent and aggressive.

A colourful material made from wood cools down even when under direct sunlight, meaning it could be used to decorate the outside of buildings while lowering their internal temperature without the need for air conditioning.

Most materials warm up when exposed to sunlight because they absorb a combination of light. But some have a cooling effect because they reflect these wavelengths instead and on top of that also give off some of the warmth within the material through the atmosphere into space.

Adding colors to such a material normally increases the amount of light it absorbs, but Silvia Vignolini at the University of Cambridge and her colleagues have now found a way to make versions in red, green or blue that have a cooling effect and the key ingredient comes from wood, in the form of two types of cellulose (纤维素).

The chemicals in cellulose are particularly good for giving off the right kind of light to have a cooling effect, while cellulose nanocrystals (纳米晶体)—which can be got from sources such as wood or cotton—produce different colors. This effect is similar to how soap bubbles show colors on their surface by spreading different wavelengths of light in different directions.

Vignolini and her colleagues combined these features by layering the nanocrystals on top of a highly reflective sheet () made from a kind of cellulose.

By adjusting the arrangement of the nanocrystals, they produced versions of this material in red, green and blue, and found they were on average 3℃ cooler than the surrounding temperature in daylight.

This early version is promising, but the coloured layer is sensitive to environmental effects like weather, says Vignolini, so more work is needed to make it a practical decoration. “Going from here to an application on a wall or on a device, you would need to have it stable enough,” she says.

18Why do most materials warm up when exposed to sunlight?

    A. They take in wavelengths. B. They reflect heat in the air.

    C. They have a cooling effect. D. They spread the warmth inside.

19Why are soap bubbles mentioned in Paragraph 4?

    A. To prove soap bubbles can spread wavelengths.

    B. To measure the amount of chemicals in cellulose.

    C. To stress the importance of cellulose nanocrystals.

    D. To explain how cellulose nanocrystals show colors.

20What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?

    A. Where the researchers placed the nanocrystals.

    B. What colors the new material showed in daylight.

    C. How the early version of the material was produced.

    D. Why the material was cooler than the surrounding air.

21What is a suitable title for the text?

    A. Discoveries Replace Air Conditioning Soon

    B. Colored Layers Make a Practical Decoration

    C. Material from Wood Helps Keep Buildings Cool

    D. Chemicals in Cellulose Show Colors in Daylight

In spring, Yatir, a human-made forest planted in the 1960s by JNF, a non-profit land development agency, on the northwest edge of the Negev Desert, bursts with new life. Pink and yellow wildflowers carpet the forest floor; camels, horses, foxes, rabbits, and snakes all survive here.

The trees are neither watered nor fertilized (施肥), and yet somehow the forest has survived for almost 60 years. “Yatir Forest proves that we can combat desertification, and heal the wounded earth,” the JNF website says. “For us, Yatir is a laboratory where we study the forest’s effect on climate,” says Rotenberg, who joined the project in 2000. “What we learn now about Yatir will be serving a warmer, dryer world in many regions.”

Fifteen years’ worth of measurements in Yatir, beginning in 2001, do show that the forest takes up a surprising amount of carbon — as much as forests in more humid areas. Semi-dry shrub (灌木丛) and grasslands cover nearly a fifth of the planet’s land; if they all were planted with trees, the Yatir results suggest, they might absorb around 10 percent of current fossil fuel emissions.

Not everyone is happy about that. The SPNI, for example, opposes further planting of trees in naturally unforested open spaces such as grasslands and shrublands. In a 2019 report, the SPNI claims that afforestation in sensitive ecosystems has a destructive impact on this area’s unique biodiversity. “I love trees,” says Alon Rothschild, head of biodiversity policy at the SPNI, “but you don’t have to stick them in every place.”

Planting forests in such places excludes native species that are adapted to shrubland, he says, including endangered ground-nesting birds which need open landscapes to dive on prey (猎物). The heavy machines and chemicals used in tree-planting can also damage fragile dryland soils, which provide food for insects and birds.

22What do we know about Yatir in the first two paragraphs?

    A. It needs special care from humans.

    B. It is useful only in warmer dryer regions.

    C. It barely survives in the harsh environment.

    D. It inspires people to cope with desertification.

23What is Rotenberg’s attitude towards Yatir?

    A. Skeptical. B. Favorable. C. Indifferent. D. Disapproving.

24What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

    A. The Yatir results.  B. The Yatir forest.

    C. Shrub and grasslands. D. The planet’s land.

25Why is Alon Rothschild against planting forests in those areas?

    A. It has a negative impact on the ecosystem.

    B. He doesn’t want to see trees everywhere.

    C. It uses heavy machines and chemicals.

    D. It reduces food for insects and birds.

解析:Education can help students build a better future for themselves, but studying abroad can sometimes come with a high price tag. Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation's latest research reveals that Australia is the most expensive destination for overseas students. The average total cost of university fees and living expenses in Australia can reach US $38,516 per year for international students. The United States ranks the second on the list, with an average annual cost of more than $35,000, followed by the United Kingdom, with annual costs over US $30,000. Several Asian countries and regions are also on the list. The average expense of overseas students in China's Hong Kong is about US $22,000 per year, ranking the 7th, next only to Singapore's US $24,248. Japan ranks the 8th, the Chinese mainland the 10th, and China's Taiwan the 11th. The research analyzed publicly available data on higher education across 13 countries. The average tuition cost for international students is based on the top 10 largest colleges and universities in each relevant country.

    49答案:One possible version:

Dozens of accomplished musicians, singers, lyricists, instrumentalists have been introduced into Mianyang through the “talent introduction policies” recently.

They give stunning performances at weekends and during holidays for free on the street. Some of them sing, while others play a variety of instruments, guitar, erhu, guzheng included.

I am amazed by this phenomenon, and welcome it by listening to or singing with the music whenever I come across those talented people. The live performances of street music relieve people of their everyday care and offer some unexpected delight and peace to passersby. People need this kind of wonderful surprise to carry on with whatever duty they have in mind.
