It was about 2:00 am. I was driving my taxi on the way to pick up a passenger. When I arrived to collect, I found the building was dark. I walked to the door and knocked, “Just a minute, ” answered a weak, elderly voice.

After a long silence, the door opened and a small woman in her eighties stood before me. She took my arm and walked slowly toward the car. She kept thanking me for my kindness.

“Could you drive through the city center?” asked the old woman.

“It’s not the shortest way. ” I answered immediately.

“Oh, I’m familiar (熟悉的) with the city. And I’m in no hurry. I’m on my way to a hospice (临终医院). I don’t have any family left. It would be the last time for me to travel around the city. . . ”.

Hearing this, I quietly shut off the meter (计价器). For the next three hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked as a lift operator and the neighborhood where she had lived in and told me many stories about the buildings, the streets and the people there.

Then, she just sat, saying nothing. At dawn (黎明), she suddenly said, “I’m tired. Let’s go now. ”

“How much shall I pay you?” she asked, “Nothing. ” I replied. Almost without thinking, I gave her a hug. “Thank you, young man. ” said her, excited. Then she held onto me with moved tears.

Our hug ended with her words disappearing in the warm morning wind.

There was a businessman who was deep in debt（债务）and could see no way out. He sat on a park bench, head in his hands.

Suddenly, an old man appeared before him. “I can see that something is troubling you,” he said. After listening to the businessman’s story, the old man put a check（支）in the man’s hand, saying, “Take it and pay me back here exactly one year from today.” Then he turned and disappeared as quickly as he had come.

The businessman saw in his hand a check for $500,000 signed by John Rockefeller, one of the richest men in the world!

“I can pay off my debt!” he realized. But instead, the businessman decided to save the check. Just knowing it was there might give him the power to save his business, he thought. He went back and worked hard to make his business successful. Soon, he was out of debt and made money again.

Exactly one year later, he returned to the park with the check. The old man appeared as planned. Behind the old man was a nurse. The nurse said that the old man was mentally ill（精神病）and was always telling people he was John Rockefeller.

The businessman was shocked to hear this. All year long he’d been buying and selling, believing that he had half a million dollars behind him. Suddenly, he realized that it wasn’t the money that had turned his life around.

I love travelling so you can imagine my disappointment when I know that my local train station would be closed for at least five months. I do not have a car but I soon realized that I could start carpooling.

Carpooling is the sharing of car journeys so that more than one person travels in a car. As a result, carpooling can be a cheaper choice than public transport because everyone in the car shares the cost of petrol (汽油). I recently did carpooling for the first time and it was easy to find a driver. I used a website which lists drivers’ descriptions and found someone going to the same place as me. The descriptions provided a lot of information such as the driver’s first name, age and reviews (评论) from previous (以前的) passengers. I decided to travel with a lady because she had many good reviews. I paid for my share of the petrol through the website and planned to meet her in the town center.

It may seem quite dangerous to travel with strangers but there are some ways of keeping safe. Firstly, the driver cannot receive your money until you text him or her a code (密码) at the end of your journey. Secondly, it is important to read the drivers’ descriptions and reviews when you choose a driver. Lastly, I would suggest travelling with a friend so that you will feel safer and less lonely.

I had a good experience of carpooling. More importantly, carpooling provides a fantastic opportunity to meet interesting people on my travels.
