Jonathan the tortoise, the world's oldest land animal, turned 190 over the weekend on the island of St. Helena, where he enjoyed a "cake" of leafy greens, seasonal fruits and vegetables, including carrots carved into the number "190".
Jonathan was brought to St. Helena from the Seychelles in 1882 as a gift. According to Guinness World Records, Jonathan surpassed the previous record holder, Tu'i Malila, who lived in the 1770s until 1965 and could be even older. He arrived in St. Helena as a fully mature tortoise, meaning he was at least 50 in 1882.
"The vet is still feeding him by hand once a week to boost his calories, vitamins, minerals and trace elements, as he is blind and has no sense of smell. His hearing, however, is excellent and he enjoys the company of humans, and responds well to his vet Joe Hollins' voice as he associates him with a feast. " Guinness World Records said.
"The tortoise enjoys the sun but on very hot days takes to the shade. On mild days, he will sunbathe his long neck and legs stretched fully out of his shell to absorb heat and transfer it to his core, ” says Hollins. When it's cold, Jonathan has been known to “dig himself into leaf mold or grass cuttings and remain there all day. "
In most cases, the lifespan of a tortoise or turtle depends on the species and level of care they receive. Generally, they live much longer in captivity (圈养) than in the wild, because in the wild, they must find their own food in addition to avoiding meeting predators while not getting medical treatment. Larger turtle and tortoise species also tend to live longer than smaller ones. Click here for more information about animal record holders.

For anyone trying to lose weight, there's a truth we can all universally acknowledge that better health is often positioned as a numbers game. Hit the right number, and all your health problems will magically resolve, so the logic goes. Yet increasingly, science is revealing that losing weight may not be a silver bullet after all. In a mouse study published in the journal Science, looking specifically at an inflammatory (炎症的) eye condition linked to obesity called macular degeneration (黄斑退化), researchers found the struggle for better health doesn't need to begin and end with weight loss.
Researchers conducted experiments on mice that were fed a high-fat diet for 11 weeks, making them gain weight. The mice were then put on a diet of low-fat food for 9 weeks, making them lose weight. Another group of mice only ate the low-fat diet as a control. Researchers shot lasers into the eyes of both the yo-yo dieter mice and the control mice to encourage atypical blood vessel (非典型性血管) growth, a mark of macular degeneration.
Among the mice that had gained and then lost weight, there was about 40 percent more atypical blood vessel growth than their stable diet peers. Driving the growth appeared to be macrophages (巨噬细胞). In the yo-yo dieter mice, these cells had been reprogrammed to cause inflammation. Taken together, these cells appeared to have an outsize role in atypical blood vessel growth in the eyes. Meanwhile, in the mice fed only a low-fat diet, inflammatory changes were absent. The results suggest that eating a high-fat diet that causes weight gain, even if followed by weight loss, leaves an inflammatory mark on mouse macrophages.
The research comes during a period of renewed interest in anti-obesity drugs. But medicines that help people lose weight do not treat inflammation linked to a history of weight gain. "How to engage these findings with medicine interventions is a challenge, " says Bapat, head of the research.
28. Which of the following best explains "a silver bullet" underlined in paragraph I?
A. A workable solution.
B. A tough choice.
C. An ultimate objective.
D. A major challenge.
29. How do researchers carry out the experiment?
A. By making comparison.
B. By listing examples.
C. By controlling test methods.
D. By analyzing diet components.
30. What can we learn about the research results?
A. Stable dieting drives the growth of macrophages.
B. Reprogrammed cells are to blame for weight gain.
C. Inflammatory changes are caused by the low-fat diet.
D. Losing weight doesn't resolve the inflammation tied to weight gain.
31. What will the research focus on next?
A. Exploring ways of losing weight.
B. Tracking the history of weight loss.
C. Treating obesity-linked inflammation.
D. Boosting interest in anti-obesity drugs.
D
"You'd be an intermediate (中级学生), " the clever salesgirl at the Apple Store said brightly. She was talking about the free classes one could sign up for. An intermediate, I thought with pride. "I've used Macs since they had green text and discs, " I said, eager to strengthen my position. "And I had a Mac Classic for years. ” She smiled, or maybe she was thinking, "If it's been that long, why are you still an intermediate?"
Why does one remain an intermediate? Sometimes it's a matter of opportunity: Leaving New England was a blow to my cross-country skiing. No longer living on the banks of a river held up kayaking (皮划艇运动). Horseback riding, too, requires an opportunity. I know, however, a friend I rode with as a child bought herself a retired police horse in her 40s. A devoted kayaker would not have been prevented by the highways lying between her and rivers.
Sometimes, it's ability. I have taken up piano later in life. I love music, but I can see that I have no particular gift for it. Gardening was another late job. I wasn't a natural at that, either.
I admit I'm a little ashamed of being an intermediate. It seems to imply a lack of focus, an unwillingness to push myself to go deeper or further. Do I lack the persistence to become an expert? Am I too easily distracted to put in the 10, 000 hours reportedly required to achieve mastery?
Maybe I have to accept that, for now at least, intermediate is my sweet spot. I've moved past the frustrations of beginnerhood without meeting the demands of expertise. A beginner is a beginner and an expert is just that. But an intermediate can be low, medium, or high. And wherever you are as an intermediate, you can always go forward, try harder, and learn more.
Who can claim to be an expert parent, wife, husband, child, or friend? At best, we're the high intermediate with much to learn.
32. What did the writer want to prove to the salesgirl in the first paragraph?
A. Her position as a lifelong intermediate.
B. Her good knowledge about Apple computers.
C. Her eagerness to attend free courses.
D. Her ability to afford to buy expensive computers.
33. What did the writer think of opportunities?
A. They are only excuses.
B. They appear just by accident.
C. They are waiting in our life.
D. They just come and go.
34. What do the questions express in Para. 4?
A. The writer's worries.
B. The writer's disappointments.
C. The writer's curiosities.
D. The writer's doubts.
35. Why is the writer content to be an intermediate?
A. It means the possibility to make improvement.
B. It marks the beginning to achieve mastery.
C. It presents the opportunity to become an expert.
D. It rids people of the difficulty to move on.

Essential first job tips for graduates
Graduates may be anxious as they enter the workplace. And most bosses won't teach you how to be a good employee. _36 Follow these four essential new job tips for graduates.
Speak clearly. Many graduates mumble (嘟哝) or talk too quickly. It is common that people have to ask them to repeat themselves. Perhaps it is because they often speak to their peers who have super sharp hearing. But the customers you encounter in your new job may not. Good verbal communication skills are essential for most jobs. Practice speaking slowly and clearly. _37
Listen carefully. This is an important skill no matter what career you hope to have. 38 When someone is talking, make eye contact to indicate that you are listening. And then ask appropriate questions to make sure you understand the directions or questions.
Don't interrupt unless it's urgent. When a co-worker or boss is talking to a customer, don't cut in unless what you have to share absolutely can't wait. Use good judgment to determine the urgency of the situation. 39 Say "excuse me", and then wait to be acknowledged before you start speaking.
40 Some employers have a pretty strict dress code, which takes the decision about what to wear to work. This rule could be quite helpful. Other bosses just tell their workers to "dress appropriately". Remember, though casual clothing is acceptable to some jobs, make sure your clothes are clean, without rips (裂口) or designs that may upset others.
A. Dress formally.
B. Dress in a proper way.
C. If it is urgent, interrupt without judgement.
D. Avoid shouting, but speak loudly enough to be heard.
E. That is something new workers must learn on their own.
F. When it is necessary to interrupt a conversation, do so carefully.
G. It requires being able to pay attention to the information another person is conveying.

Mai Lin wasn't doing well enough at school, or at least she wasn't satisfied with herself. She wished she could do better.
"Let's review the material we learned in the last unit, " the history teacher said. "Who can tell us what caused the War of 1812?" Mai Lin sat at her desk, staring ahead. She hoped the teacher wouldn't call her name. They hadn't studied the War of 1812 at her old school and she didn't know the answer.
"Alison?" the teacher asked instead. Oh, perfect, Mai Lin thought. Of course Alison would have the answer. She seemed to have all the answers. Alison was the most popular girl in school - always surrounded by millions of boyfriends, best friends, and others. She was like a brilliant sun.
Mai Lin hadn't made one or two friends of her own so far. Her old school was small and low-key, but a shy person like Mai Lin had a chance there. This new school, however, seemed as big as an airport to Mai Lin, and it seemed very hard to get around in it. She still got lost sometimes in the school.
Mai Lin frowned as Alison answered the teacher's question. Alison probably never got lost, Mai Lin thought to herself. You could probably put Alison down in the middle of a desert, and within five minutes she'd be able to tell you the best way to get home.
History class finally ended, and Mai Lin headed for the gym. The class had been playing basketball. Alison, who was as tall and thin and attractive as a tree, was very good at it. Beside her, Mai Lin felt like a very small and foolish ant. Today, however, the gym teacher pointed to a thick rope hanging from the ceiling and said, "Everybody! You're going to climb this rope today. "
Para 1:
Hearing the teacher's words, Mai Lin smiled.
Para 2:
Mai Lin stepped forward and got close to the rope.
