James Dawson, a sixth grader at an American middle school, was eating his lunch one day, when he accidentally swallowed a piece of the plastic wrapping(包裹)his food. He started to choke(噎住)and grasp his throat. Great fear quickly set in when he realized he couldn’t breathe. “It felt sharp in my throat. Very sharp. And it was just hurting,” James recalled, adding, “I was like, I’m going to die. Help me!”
Thankfully, a boy James didn’t know very well, happened to be walking by at just the right time. What was more, 11-year-old Arad Arbasi knew exactly what to do. He saw James grasping his throat, and noted that the boy’s face had turned completely purple. So he ran behind James immediately and started doing the Heimlich maneuver(海姆立克腹部冲击法). In the end, James shouted, “It’s out! It’s out!”
Arad said he’d learned how to do the Heimlich from a book several years before. So he understood the physics behind it. “What it does is push air through the airway(气道)to throw whatever is there out.” he explained.
That night, James went home and told his mother what had happened. She wanted so badly to find the child who’d saved her son that she posted it on the Internet. Later, Arad’s mother saw it and wrote her back.
Arad and James said the choking event led to a close friendship, and James was very grateful to his friend for helping him when others didn’t even notice he was in trouble.
“He knew what to do and I’m glad he knew what to do,” James said, or I probably wouldn’t be talking.”

We all have those moments when bright ideas hit us, but not everyone can develop such moments into the fruits of creative thinking. While we believe creative thinking is the falling apple of Isaac Newton, one of the greatest scientists, we seldom notice that creative thinking is in fact a process (过程).
Let’s look at what happened in 1666.
Sitting in the garden, Newton watched an apple fall from a tree. He began to wonder if the same force that pulled the apple down also kept the moon circling the earth. Newton believed it did. He called it “gravity (重力)”.
This story has become one of the most popular examples of “eureka” moments. But when we cheer for the great discovery, the whole process of creative thinking shouldn’t be forgotten.
Newton studied mathematics for long to have a better understanding of the world. He always enjoyed finding new ways to solve problems. The falling apple was only the fruit of years of hard work before. It also started the train of thought that continued for the next twenty years.
Newton began to examine “gravity” carefully. He experimented (实验). Then he studied the results and used what he had learned to do new experiments. In 1687, the greatest scientific work ever written came out.
The whole process of creative thinking works the same in our life. In school, we prepare ourselves for the right moment. Once the moment comes, we catch it and then keep on working in the years to come. It takes much to get the fruits of creative thinking, but the sweetest fruits will be ready for those who wait the longest.
- You may read the passage in a ________.
A. Notice B.magazine C. dictionary
55. The underlined word “eureka” in Paragraph (段落) 4 probably means “________”.
A. I’ve got it B.I give up C. I believe it

57. The writer mainly wants to tell us that ________.

B. sweetest fruits come from years of hard work
C. we should wait for the right moment

The regions of the brain connected with learning are more active when people complete a task by hand instead of on a keyboard. In fact, there have been many such studies to arrive at that result.
One such study compared students who took notes by hand with those who took notes on computers. Researchers found that the students using computers were likely to write down what the teacher said word for word, while those who took notes by hand were more likely to listen to what was being said, picking out the important content (内容) and processing information. When asked questions about the lecture, the students who had taken notes by hand were better able to answer than those who had typed their notes.
“Writing by hand allows people to really figure out what they mean to say, which may help self-expression,” said Oppenheimer, one of the study’s co-authors (合著者). In some cases, putting pen to paper can even help build connections. “A doctor who takes notes on a patient’s symptoms (症状) by hand may get on better with patients than doctors who are typing into a computer,” he added.
“When you write by hand, you write more thoughtfully (沉思地). Such thoughtful writing rests the brain and encourages creativity,” said neuroscientist Claudia Aguirre. “Recent neuroscientific research has uncovered a neural pathway (神经通路) that only starts working when we physically draw out our letters. And this pathway is related to our success in learning and memory.”
While there will always be things you want to write quickly, there are others that can benefit from the time it takes to write them out by hand. Our keyboards are great for a lot of things. But sometimes, nothing can take the place of the feeling of spreading out a clean sheet of paper, and writing with a most loved pen.
- Parts of the brain will work __________ if people complete a task by hand rather than on a keyboard.
64. The students who __________ by hand have a better understanding of what the teacher says because they tend to pick out the important content and process information when listening.
65. According to Oppenheimer, doctors taking notes by hand may build __________with patients.
66. We have learned from Paragraph 4 that the newly-found neural pathway can help people succeed in __________.
67. The passage mainly talks about __________.
