My father, Michael, led me through the outside shed he’d filled with his paintings. “When I have an exhibition…” he began, pointing to the artworks he’d created, before stopping. Poor Pa, I thought.
In 1994 he’d been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease only in his forties. But after finding the right medication, he could continue on as normal and so had our family—Parkinson’s just wasn’t something we spoke about.
A husband and father to three, he had had a successful career and had always been extremely creative. Even when his Parkinson’s advanced, my father decided to attend a painting course. In art lessons, the class practised painting still life objects, like pears, but my father had other ideas. Inspired by his favourite artist, Jackson Pollock, a leading abstract expressionist, he began producing abstract pieces. He thought that it helped us to see the world in a different way. Soon, I realized he was right. When I observed my father’s works, I could interpret each of them in many ways. While in 2019, my father was diagnosed with kidney cancer and given just three months to live. We all couldn’t contain our sadness, but we soon received great news that a new form of immunotherapy shrunk the cancer considerably. As weeks turned to months, it felt like my father was a walking miracle. To our sadness, his health battles had started to take a toll on him, and as he continued speaking about wanting to share his paintings with the world, I knew what had to be done.
In October this year, we welcomed the public to “My Kids Could Do That”, my father’s first public showing. Everyone loved his works. His eyes lit up with pride when he saw the walls filled with his works. I’ve got three of his pieces in my home and I couldn’t be more proud of what he’s achieved.

International demand for black rhinos horn has seen the animals killed cruelly for decades in countries such as Namibia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. In 1960 there were an estimated 100, 000 left, and by 1995 fewer than 2, 500 remained. Conservation efforts have brought the number up to around 5, 600 today, but the species is still critically endangered, and poaching (非法捕猎) is among its biggest threats. Scientists have worked to protect these rare creatures by tracking them with GPS devices tied to their necks or ankles or implanted in their horns. The resulting data let researchers monitor the rhinos’ numbers and when they enter poaching hot spots. But the devices can fail, and drugging the animals to attach them may cause harm.
A recent study describes a new tracking technology that uses smart phones to record rhino footprints. Called the footprint-identification technique (FIT), this system includes software that can analyze the animals’ movements from a distance to help keep them safe from poachers. The idea came from working with local trackers in Zimbabwe. These footprint-reading experts can identify individual black rhinos from the shape of their feet and, when visible, the impressions left by cracks in the animals’ heel pads, which are as distinctive as a human fingerprint. “We probably wouldn’t even have looked at the footprints in the first place if we didn’t have local trackers,” says Sky Alibhai, co-founder of WildTrack.
To use the system, scientists gather rhino footprint images with a smart phone application and upload the pictures to a global database. FIT software analysis can then identify the individual animal and determine its age and sex with up to 99 percent accuracy. Researchers can also estimate the number of black rhinos in an area and watch their movements.
Researchers have adapted the technology for diverse animals, including African lions, Bengal tigers. “I think this is great for monitoring animals and counting individuals,” says Ciska Scheijen, a conservation scientist in South Africa. He wonders about FIT’s performance during the rainy season, when footprints are often indistinct, and if it can track larger herds as opposed to the 35-odd individuals this study monitored.
8.What is mainly described in Paragraph 1?
A.Illegal hunting is on the rise.
B.Black rhinos horn is a major business.
C.Black rhinos are at risk of extinction.
D.Conservation efforts are getting nowhere.
9.What is the function of FIT?
A.To check rhino footprints.
B.To analyze black rhinos’ daily routines.
C.To keep track of black rhinos for their safety.
D.To monitor the rhinos’ numbers at poaching spots.
10.What does Ciska Scheijen think of FIT?
A.It may fail with footprints unclear.
B.It will monitor animals on rainy days.
C.It can be used for tracking larger herds.
D.It can track other animals besides rhinos.
11.Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?
A.How Does the Tracking System Work?
B.Why Are Black Rhinos Endangered?
C.Measures Are Taken to Protect Black Rhinos
D.New App Tracks Black Rhinos Through Footprints
Many of us seem to have lives that follow a certain path. From kindergarten all the way to marriage, every stage of our lives seems to be preset. Although this works well for many people, according to British motivational philosopher Jay Shetty, there is no “right” schedule to live our lives by.
A few months ago, a video of Shetty’s speech Before You Feel Pressure went viral on the Internet across the world. In the video, he sends an important message that we should think “outside of the path” and have the courage to follow our hearts. Shetty adds that, we don’t have to get stressed and put ourselves in a race with our peers or judge our lives based on others. Everything in life happens according to our time, our clocks.
In his inspiring speech, Shetty points out that UK author J. K. Rowling got her famous Harry Potter series published at age 32, after being turned down by 12 publishers. Shetty also mentions that Chinese businessman Jack Ma didn’t even start the Alibaba Group until he was 35 and US actor Morgan Freeman didn’t get his big break until he was 52 years old.
We shouldn’t let anyone rush us. As Albert Einstein once said, “Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that’s counted truly counts. ”
The key to staying on our own tracks is to be patient and embrace our own passions. In Australian nurse Bronnie Ware’s best-selling book, she recorded the regrets of her dying patients, and the top one on the list was, “I wish l had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the one others expected of me.” Indeed, we are all unique in our personalities and gifts, and there’s no perfect fit for all. We should listen to our inner voices and unlearn what the world has taught us.
“It is important to allow people to go back to being self-aware of their own interests, needs and concerns”, Shetty told National Geographic. “It’s disconnecting from what ‘makes sense’ to what actually moves you and what makes sense internally.”
12.What is many people’s life path like according to Paragraph 1?
A.It suits everyone fine.
B.It is preset by parents.
C.It includes two major stages.
D.It seems to be a fixed pattern.
13.What does Shetty want to convey in the video?
A.Run your own race.
B.Follow the preset path.
C.Think outside the box.
D.Integrate our ideas with others’.
14.How does Shetty prove his idea in Paragraph 3?
A.By using quotes.
B.By giving examples.
C.By making comparison.
D.By analyzing figures.
15.Which statement does the author most probably agree with?
A.Accept what others teach us.
B.Stick to our own internal thoughts.
C.Live up to others’ expectations of us.
D.Reflect on what we undergo in our life.

When people think about ways to help the environment, encourage biodiversity and decrease greenhouse gases, they don’t usually think about the impact of food waste. ____16____

This is good but often these plastics and packaging keep food fresh for longer. ____18____ Scientists are working on developing methods of treating and storing food that can extend its shelf life.
Dish up smaller portions. This results in up to 20% less food waste. Many of us put our leftovers in the fridge, then forget about them. Fortunately, there are many ways to manage our fridge contents effectively and decrease food waste. ____19____ Labeling leftovers reminds us when they went in and when they need to be eaten by. Try and freeze meat dairy and bread if they are close to spoiling—this will extend their life.
Buy directly from local suppliers. Our food systems and supply chains are incredibly complex, which leads to high levels of food loss and waste. In contrast, buying directly from local suppliers results in less waste. ____20____

Friend or Foe?
Last year, at day camp, my friend Ollie and I were on the same obstacle- course (障碍赛) team and had a great time. This year, Scotty, the captain of Team Panda, insisted we pick sticks to decide which team we belonged to.
At the beginning, we just wished we’d be on the same team again. But to our disappointment, Ollie had picked a short stick for Team Grizzly, while I had a long stick for Team Panda. My heart sank as something were definitely going to be different.
We all played a name game together, and then were divided into two groups to make team flags. “Could you please pass that paint?” asked a boy named Ben, “We’re going to destroy the Grizzlies! Right, Arizona?”
“But Ollie, my best friend, is in Grizzly. How come I destroy him?”I asked myself shyly.
Then at lunchtime, I planned to sit with Ollie at the same table as last year, cracking each other up the way good friends do. “What are you doing? Having lunch with our enemy is not OK!!!” claimed a girl in my team. Only then did I realize there was an invisible dividing line. All of the Grizzlies sat together, and all of the Pandas sat together. I had no other alternative but to say goodbye to Ollie and concentrate on my lunch.
That night I hardly fell asleep. Ben’s voice was saying “ Destroy the Grizzlies!” on repeat. I was wondering if being a good team member meant I was supposed to put my friendship with Ollie aside. One of my best friends was a Grizzly, and it just didn’t seem fun to treat him as an enemy.
I woke up with zero energy for our first competition the next morning. We each had two tries to race through an obstacle course. My first try was a disaster! I did OK with the monkey bars, the tunnel, and the slide. But when I did the rope swing over the sandpit(沙坑), I went too slow and got stuck in the middle. I felt pretty frustrated.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150词左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Dear Mike,
Greetings from China! Hearing that the Chinese language will be an optional course in your school, I’m writing delightedly to gave some practical advice on the decoration of your classroom.
I think it would be a good idea to put up some unique traditional Chinese elements like paper-cuts and calligraphy works. Not only can they make the classroom more attractive, but they also carry rich Chinese cultural and historical information. Furthermore, you can put a book shelf at the back of the classroom, where students can get easy access to the Chinese language.
I firmly believe that if you decorate the classroom that way, it will surely create an amazing Chinese learning atmosphere.
Best wishes!
Yours sincerely.

When I finished the course, Ollie came over: “It doesn’t matter. You made it last year. I know you can make your second run a good one”. He tapped me on the shoulder gently, and said in an encouraging voice. How come he cheered on me, the “enemy”? I raised my head and stared into his eyes with confusion. “You are my best friend! You will be the best!” It is simple words, spoken from the heart, found their way straight into mine. I realized that being on the competing team shouldn’t get in the way of our friendship.
On my second time through the obstacle course, Ollie stood up for me. I took a deep breath, toed the line and was ready to run. With the cheers of Ollie and my teammates, I ended up with the fastest time on my team. And to my surprise. Ollie also got the fastest time on his team. The entire Panda VS Grizzly match ended in a tie. From then on, I decided not to take the “enemy” comments too seriously. It’s possible to do your best for your team and to remain friends with someone on the other team.
