    Hong Kong Science Museum

    You might really like this museum if you are interested in science. Hong Kong Science Museum wants to teach kids science and give them a place to have fun with computers. Kids like running around and playing with the equipment there. However, adults can learn some knowledge, too.

    Since its opening in April, 1991, Hong Kong Science Museum has presented itself to be a good place for science learning. Through having better exhibits and fun science programs in an enjoyable environment, the museum wants to popularize science to the public and support science education in schools.     The museum is 6,500 m’ and has over 500 exhibits and nearly 70 percent of them are suitable for visitors of all ages. Another attraction is the DC-3 airplane which is the first local airliner and the first exhibit moved into the museum building. The museum also has a 745 m’ Special Exhibition Hall, a 295-seat Lecture Hall, a Classroom, a Computer Classroom, a Laboratory and a Resource Centre. Other ancillary facilities(附属设施) include a Gift Shop and a Bookshop.

    Apart from permanent(永久的) exhibitions, the museum regularly presents some temporary exhibitions on all kinds of topics related to science and modern technology.     Tina Leverton was 62 when she bought her first pair of ballet shoes. She said putting her feet into the soft leather was very emotional. She said: “I’ve waited a long time for it.”

    A few days later, Leverton took her first ballet class after seeing an advertisement in a newspaper. It showed older women dancing in a class near Leverton’s house. “As I came in the door, I found a big smile on my face. From the minute I started, I felt like coming home.”

    Leverton had longed to dance as a child. Sadly, her parents couldn’t afford ballet classes, for they were first-generation Indian immigrants, struggling to make a living in the UK. Her father was a train driver on the underground in London and her mother held two cleaning jobs. Nonetheless, she harboured her dream of being a ballerina (芭蕾舞女演员).

    At her present age, a grand plie-lowering to the floor with bent knees-seemed to be out of the question. It took her three months to master the move: leaping and landing on one foot. ”I love the struggle and the challenge of learning something new. People in their 60s have a lot of self-limiting beliefs: ‘I can’t do it,’ ‘I’m not good enough.’ And maybe they’re not good enough. But it doesn’t matter,” she said.

    Ballet has been transformative. At a medical appointment a few months after Leverton’s first class, a nurse measured her at 163cm, half an inch taller than she had thought. She attributes (归因) the difference to improved posture. Her muscle tone has improved and her lower back pain has stopped. Dancing has also brought new friends. She met a group of older, more independent women and worked together towards a team award with the Royal Academy of Dance.     In the old days, when you had to drive to a movie theater of to a video store to get some entertainment, it was easy to see how your actions could have an impact on the environment. You were hopping into your war, driving across town and coughing out emissions(排放)and using gas all the way.

    But now that we’re used to staying at home and streaming movies, we might get a little cocky. After all, we’re just picking up our phones or maybe turning on the TV. You’re welcome. Mother Nature.

    Not so fast, says a recent report from the French-based Shit Project. Watching a half-hour show would lead to 3.5 pounds of CO2 emissions. That’s like driving 3.9 miles. According to "Climate Crisis: The Unsustainable Use of Online Video," digital technologies are responsible for 4% of greenhouse gas emissions, and that energy use is increasing by 9% a year. Stored in data centers, videos are transferred to our terminals such as computers, smart phones, etc. via networks: all these processes require electricity whose production consumes resources and usually involves CO2 emissions.

    In the European Union, the Eureca project lead scientist, Rabih Bashroush, calculated that 5 billion downloads and streams of the song "Despacito" consumed as much electricity as the countries of Chad, Guinea-Bissau, Somalia, Sierra Leone and the Central African Republic used in a single year.

    Streaming is only expected to increase as we become more attached to our devices. Online video use is expected to account for 80%of all internet traffic by 2022 according to CISCO. By then, about 60% of the world's population will be online.

    You're probably not going to give up your streaming services, but there are things you can do to help lessen the impact of your online use.

    Here are some tips:

    Disable autoplay for video on social media.

    Stream over Wi-Fi, not mobile networks.

    Watch on the smallest screen you can.

    Don’t use high-definition(高清)video on devices.

    It’s possible that interstellar space explorers could come across problems communicating with previous and subsequent arrivals, as their spoken language has changed in isolation along the way.

    Regarding the issue, two American scholars, Andrew McKenzie and Jeffrey Punske, co-authored the article “Language Development During Interstellar Travel”. What has been discussed in the article is the concept of language change over time. They wrote that given more time, new grammatical forms can completely replace current ones.

    In a recent interview, McKenzie gamed it out.

    “If you’re on a spaceship for 10 generations, new concepts will emerge, new social issues will come up, and people will create ways of talking about them,” McKenzie said, “and these will become the vocabulary particular to the spaceship. People on Earth might never know about these words, unless there’s a reason to tell them. And the further away you get, the less you’re going to talk to people back home.”

    So if we have Earth English and spaceship English, and they become different over the years, you will have to learn a little Earth English to send messages back, or to read the instruction manuals and information that come with the spaceship.

    Also, keep in mind that the language back on Earth is going to change, too, during that time. So they may well be communicating like we’d be using Latin—communicating with this version of the language nobody uses.

    The authors concluded that if a study of the linguistic changes aboard a spaceship could be performed, it would “add to its scientific value”.
