    A father from Alabama feels favored after his twin sons’ quick thinking helped save his life last month. Brad Hassig was doing underwater exercise at his home swimming pool, something he said he’d done numerous times before. “We were just swimming. The boys were having fun. I like to do just some calming, breathing exercises in the waters, which involves just sitting underwater,” Hassig said. “I don’t ever remember finishing it.”
    Hassig’s 10-year old twin sons Bridon and Christian, as well as an 11 year old neighbor named Sam, were in the pool with him, enjoying the water, when they noticed something was wrong with their dad, who had turned a blue color. They quickly jumped into action, dragging their 185-pound father above water and toward the side of the pool.
    “They weigh 80 pounds around, and I weigh 185 pounds. So they should’ t have been able to physically do what they did,” Hassig said. “I mean everything just went as perfectly as it probably had to have.”
    Although the boys had no formal CPR (心肺复苏术) training, they remembered what they had seen in the movies. They started chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth and Christian and Sam also ran for help after the boys couldn’t unlock their dad’s phone.
    When Hassig came to life, he said he heard his sons calling out to him. “I hear the boys saying, you know, ‘Daddy, come back!’ ‘Daddy, you have to be OK!’ ” he recalled.
    Hassig and his sons’ experience calls to mind another recent close call when synchronized swimmer Anita Alvarez lost consciousness during competition and had to be pulled to the surface by her coach, Andrea Fuentes.
    Since the incident, Hassig has told others to never swim alone and the family urges people to learn how to do CPR. They’re planning a local, community-wide CPR event for kids and adults to get proper training.

    You’ve heard an old Chinese saying before: Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. You may even be nodding your head in agreement right now. However, we can have a different understanding about it.
    When a person is starving, that’s not the time to fill their head with knowledge but to first give the person a fish-eradicating their hunger-and only then teach them to fish. Far too often, people ignore this common sense first step. They see someone who is struggling, and they rush to offer wisdom. “Let me tell you what I’d do in your position,” a well-meaning individual might offer.
    But few of us understand the anxiety, confusion and uncertainty that come with overwhelming need. People meeting with personal disasters don’t have the ability to think straight. Their nerves may be shot. Their confidence may be non-existent. Can you imagine what it would be like to be in that person’s situation?
    Rushing to offer a struggling person long-term advice is a waste of time. Instead, it makes far more sense to help them regain their emotional balance. Once their ears, heart and mind open, you’ll have an opportunity to teach a new skill.
    But how do we know whether a person needs a fish before a fishing lesson? Two things: One is the ability to pay attention. We need to know whether the other person is open and receptive, or looking at the world through narrowed eyes? You can’t just take their words but have to look at how the person acts and what they don’t say. The other is empathy (共情).The more successful you are, the harder it is to imagine what it must be like to be the opposite. Try to create a safe environment for emotional acceptance before the fishing lesson.

    Technology has been around for a long time, and we’ve used it as a tool to communicate more rapidly and effectively. But in the past few years, technology has almost takes the place of conversation. People send messages back and forth, not realizing that they never have live contact with the other person. “That’s OK, right?” one might ask. “We’re still communicating. The relationship looks a little different, but we’re still connecting back and forth.” One study showed that only 7 percent of communication is the words we use. Thirty-eight percent is our tone of voice, and 55 percent is body language. In face-to-face conversation, we’re using all three. On the phone, we’ve lost the body language—so we’re down to two. When our communication is completely through email, texting or social media, we’re down to one.
    Some people assume that technology is the enemy because it’s robbing people of their conversational skills. Indeed, sharing words in print is a form of communication, but it doesn’t convey the emotion that comes through tone of voice, facial expression, and body language. Written words can’t hold or hug. Written words can’t listen or make eye contact. When I wrote You Can’t Text a Tough Conversation, I interviewed a lot of people. Most of them loved their technology. But most of them also felt like it had got out of control, and it was messing up their relationships in some way.
    Technology isn’t the enemy; it’s just a tool. It’s like a small sharp knife used by a doctor for doing an operation. In the hands of a skilled surgeon, it’s good. In the hands of a crazed criminal, it’s bad. Technology isn’t going anywhere either. The key is figuring out how to get them to work together. It’s like two porcupines(豪猪) that fall in love. They need each other, but have to learn how to keep from sticking each other and causing pain.

    A father from Alabama feels favored after his twin sons’ quick thinking helped save his life last month. Brad Hassig was doing underwater exercise at his home swimming pool, something he said he’d done numerous times before. “We were just swimming. The boys were having fun. I like to do just some calming, breathing exercises in the waters, which involves just sitting underwater,” Hassig said. “I don’t ever remember finishing it.”
    Hassig’s 10-year old twin sons Bridon and Christian, as well as an 11 year old neighbor named Sam, were in the pool with him, enjoying the water, when they noticed something was wrong with their dad, who had turned a blue color. They quickly jumped into action, dragging their 185-pound father above water and toward the side of the pool.
    “They weigh 80 pounds around, and I weigh 185 pounds. So they should’ t have been able to physically do what they did,” Hassig said. “I mean everything just went as perfectly as it probably had to have.”
    Although the boys had no formal CPR (心肺复苏术) training, they remembered what they had seen in the movies. They started chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth and Christian and Sam also ran for help after the boys couldn’t unlock their dad’s phone.
    When Hassig came to life, he said he heard his sons calling out to him. “I hear the boys saying, you know, ‘Daddy, come back!’ ‘Daddy, you have to be OK!’ ” he recalled.
    Hassig and his sons’ experience calls to mind another recent close call when synchronized swimmer Anita Alvarez lost consciousness during competition and had to be pulled to the surface by her coach, Andrea Fuentes.
    Since the incident, Hassig has told others to never swim alone and the family urges people to learn how to do CPR. They’re planning a local, community-wide CPR event for kids and adults to get proper training.

    But how do we know whether a person needs a fish before a fishing lesson? Two things: One is the ability to pay attention. We need to know whether the other person is open and receptive, or looking at the world through narrowed eyes? You can’t just take their words but have to look at how the person acts and what they don’t say. The other is empathy (共情).The more successful you are, the harder it is to imagine what it must be like to be the opposite. Try to create a safe environment for emotional acceptance before the fishing lesson.

    Technology has been around for a long time, and we’ve used it as a tool to communicate more rapidly and effectively. But in the past few years, technology has almost takes the place of conversation. People send messages back and forth, not realizing that they never have live contact with the other person. “That’s OK, right?” one might ask. “We’re still communicating. The relationship looks a little different, but we’re still connecting back and forth.” One study showed that only 7 percent of communication is the words we use.     Some people assume that technology is the enemy because it’s robbing people of their conversational skills. Written words can’t listen or make eye contact. When I wrote You Can’t Text a Tough Conversation, I interviewed a lot of people. Most of them loved their technology. But most of them also felt like it had got out of control, and it was messing up their relationships in some way.
    Technology isn’t the enemy; it’s just a tool. It’s like a small sharp knife used by a doctor for doing an operation. In the hands of a skilled surgeon, it’s good. In the hands of a crazed criminal, it’s bad. Technology isn’t going anywhere either. The key is figuring out how to get them to work together. It’s like two porcupines(豪猪) that fall in love. They need each other, but have to learn how to keep from sticking each other and causing pain.
