The first World Report on Vision(视力) by the World Health Organization (WHO)came out on October 10th, 2019. According to the report, near-sightedness(近视) is an alarming problem among young adults. In the United States, about 40%of young adults are near-sighted. But this situationpales compared with that of young adults in China.
ChinaDaily reported more serious vision problems in China in 2019. In the report, 80%senior highschool students are near-sighted, followed by 71. 6%in junior highschool, 36%in primary school and 14%of 6-year-olds in kindergarten. This is a shocking fact to the society. What causes this eyesight problem?Besides family history, there are some other reasons, such as not having enough outdoor activities, being short of enough sleep and too much use of electronic products.
However, many young people don’t take near-sightedness seriously. They think that it is easy to solve the problem with the help of eyedrops, clever glasses, contact lenses or eye operations. And some young people even think that it is cool to wear glasses. But the real facts are not like that. Although glasses, contact lenses and other ways may help solve the problem of the near-sightedness, they are lifelong expenses. Not every family can afford them. What's more, serious near-sightedness can cause other eye diseases in middle age, some of which can even cause loss of vision.

Future City is a project-based learning program. It starts with a question—how can we make the world a better place? To answer it, 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade students imagine, research, design, and build cities of the future. In this way, they can show their solutions to a citywide problem. So far, Future City has played an important role in encouraging middle schoolers to develop their interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
Each year, Future City has a specific topic. Past topics include stormwater management, public spaces, green energy, and so on. The 2021-2022 theme is A Waste-Free Future. Teams will design a waste-free city. During the study, they need to hand in a 1,500-word city paper to give a general statement (陈述) about the design. Besides this, they also need to hand in a model built from recycled materials. A project plan and a video that shows how they work together and how they present their ideas are required as well. At the same time, teams should get ready for the Q&A part with judges.
This program allows students to do the things that engineers do. For example, to start with, they should identify problems, and then come up with new ideas. Next, they work together to design solutions. After testing, retesting, and building, finally they share their results. This process is called the engineering design process. Centered around this, Future City is a potent way to build students’ 21st-century skills. Whales are the largest living organisms (生物) living on the surface of the earth. An adult blue whale weighs up to 173 tonnes with 30 meters in length. When a whale dies in the ocean, its body usually falls to the sea floor and a special deep-sea ecosystem will be formed in a long time. Scientists give a name to this: the whale fall.
Recently, some scientists on a Chinese research ship called Tansuo-1 found a whale fall at the depth of 1,600 meters in the South China Sea. Whale falls are seldom found by humans. This is the first time China has found this type of ecosystem. So far, less than 50 modem natural whale falls have been found by humans around the world.
The whale fall is really important to deep-sea animals, as it provides food for them. Usually, the whale fall goes through three stages. The first stage comes just after the whale dies. The body attracts lots of big sea animals such as shark and they come to eat the body. This stage lasts from months to years. At the second stage, smaller animals come for the whale’s bones and leftovers. This stage can last one or two years. Bacteria (细菌) play a role at the third stage. They break down what has been left. This stage can last as long as 100 years.
The whale fall found in the South China Sea is 3 meters long. It is still at the first stage. The scientists said it would take them a long time to study the whale fall because they knew it would help them understand the deep-sea ecosystem better.
