一、阅读理解
Major Hawaiian Islands
One of the hardest parts of planning a trip to Hawaii is deciding which of the major Hawaiian Islands you should visit. Each has its own personality and offers unique adventures and activities.
Oahu
Oahu has a bit of everything, packed in 597 square miles. You can hike into thick rainforests, and when you need a break, relax on white sand beaches and stay at luxury resorts. Oahu has become a great destination for families. The urban core of Honolulu and Waikiki has historic sites, museums and nightlife scenes. The island lives up to its nickname of the Gathering Place.
Maui
Maui, the second largest Hawaiian island, is a great island for honeymooners. The island is enjoyed for its world-famous beaches, the sacred views of migrating humpback whales, farm-to-table cuisine and the magnificent sunrise and sunset from Haleakalã, a scenic national park.
Kauai
Kauai is the oldest of the main Hawaiian Islands. The island gets a lot of rain, but that's what makes it so lively. You'll come across flowers and plants you've never seen before. For some of the best views on the island, visit Waimea Canyon, known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, and the Na Pali coast, boasting some of the world's highest sea cliffs.
Big Island
Big Island is the only Hawaiian island still growing. Here, you can visit the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which protects some of the most unique geological, biological and cherished cultural landscapes in the world. Extending from sea level to 13,680 feet, the park encompasses the summits of two of the world's most active volcanoes and is one of the few spots in the world to see lava flow.

Birds of the same feather group together but, within their groups, flamingos—birds famous for their bright pink feathers - form smaller groups of like-minded individuals, a new study suggests.
While previous research showed that flamingos formed friendship groups, the findings of this latest study, published in the journal Scientific Reports on Wednesday, indicates that these friendships are largely decided by individuals' inner characteristics.
Researchers at the University of Exeter and the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT) studied a group of 147 Caribbean flamingos and a group of 115 Chilean flamingos, both kept at the WWT's Slimbridge Wetland Centre in the UK.
The researchers found flamingos in both groups had various personalities, and they appeared to use these personalities to choose which flamingos they would make friends with. "For example, brave birds had stronger, more consistent ties with other brave birds, while shy birds tended to spend their time with fellow shy flamingos," said study co-author Dr. Paul Rose at the University of Exeter.
In the Caribbean flock, personality was also found to have an effect on social roles. Flamingos displaying aggressive and exploratory behaviour had more friends in their group and formed stronger connections with their friends. These flamingos also participated in more fights and were more willing t0provide back-up when friends in their group were threatened.
"Our findings need further investigation, both to help us to understand the evolution of social behavior and to improve the welfare of zoo animals," says Rose.

Our church members in Toronto has a way of assisting those who have financial difficulties without making the receiver feel shame or guilt. Money is dropped into an offering box with only the name of the receiver on the envelope. The envelopes are then distributed to those members without them knowing the name of the giver.
There came a time when my husband and I were among those in need. We did not talk about our financial difficulty with our children. Our children knew it only because we had to cut back on many things. Still, we hoped they were not aware of the toughness their father and I were suffering. We did not want to burden them with a problem they could do nothing to solve.
Our situation wasn't improving for a long time. Just as we reached the point of despair, our church gave us a gift envelope. While we were overjoyed, we couldn't help but wonder who had given such a generous gift.
A year later, our seventeen-year-old son was applying for a student loan so he could attend university. It was then that we discovered that his savings account was almost empty. What an astonishing discovery then! He had been doing part-time jobs since nine years old. We had trusted him to put part of his wages from his part-time jobs into the bank towards his education. I asked him repeatedly to tell me where the money had gone. At first he would not tell me, which made me even angrier. I would not let the matter alone. I kept hounding him, determined to get the whole thing straight.
Finally, in tears, and with great reluctance, my son admitted that the year before he had put his savings in the offering box for his father and me. I stood there speechless, tears filling my eyes. It had taken my son years to save that money. He had given it to us willingly—without telling us what he had done.
8、Why did the author not tell her children about their economic hardship?

B. There was no need for them to know.

11、What is the best title for the text?
A. Tough Time in My Life B. Secret Love of My Son
C. Generous Gift from Church D. Unforgettable Life Experience
According to our study, how employees spend their time at work can have significant spillover(溢出的) effects on their friends, partners, and perhaps most critically, their children.
To explore the impact of parents' work on their children's development, my team and I conducted a study. It followed more than 370 low-wage, working-class families over more than ten years, which was longer than that of most other studies. Through comprehensive analysis, we found that the children's developmental outcomes were directly and significantly affected by their parents' work lives.
Specifically, the data showed that parents who experienced more autonomy on the jobs and who had more-supportive supervisors and coworkers were in turn warmer and more engaged when interacting with their infants. For example, Sonya was a home health assistant whose boss empowered her to manage her time independently and asked for her input on how best to support clients. Sonya felt respected by her supervisor, and this positivity spilled over into how she interacted with her first-grade daughter, Kaya: When Sonya returned home from work, she was hands-on, engaged, warm, and joyful in her interactions with Kaya.
So what does this mean for employers? From a business standpoint, if employers pay attention to the effects of work on their employees' families, their companies can gain best financial benefits. After all, when workers have a hard time in family, their stress will spill over into the workplace, leading to lower productivity, more sick days and personal time off, and an unhappier, less motivated workforce.
Our research suggests providing working parents with the autonomy and supportive relationships has a powerful, positive impact on their children's well-being. While many people might assume that low-wage jobs are stressful, "bad" jobs, the parents taking on such jobs say their employers have created favourable working environment to help them and their families thrive.
Ultimately, how companies treat their workers today will determine how the next generation grows up tomorrow, and it's up to all of us to invest in our shared future. That means building workplaces that are beneficial to the well-being of working parents and their kids, too.
12、What word can be used to describe the author's study?
A. Money-wasting. B. Profit-making.
C. Time-consuming. D. Labor-saving.
13、What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The attractive characters of employees.
B. The favorable working place for parenting.
C. The delightful interaction between Sonya and Kaya.
D. The close relationship between supervisors and workers.
14、How do employers promote productivity according to the passage?
A. Allowing more personal time off.
B. Improving the wages of employees.
C. Carrying out parent-child activities.
D. Focusing on the spillover impact of work.
15、What's the main idea of the passage?
A. A parent's experience at work influences his kid.
B. A parent's emotion promotes his kid's well-being.
C. A employer's decision determines his staff's welfare.
D. A employee's devotion improves his working efficiency.
