A.Teach her to swim. B.Work harder. C.Be her best friend.
19.Who would give the book two stars?
    A.The speaker herself. B.The speaker’s son. C.The speaker’s daughter.
20.What does the speaker mainly talk about?
A.How to read a book. B.How to develop an interest. C.How to make friends.
    【答案】18.C    19.A    20.C
My Best Friend is a book for young children. It’s mainly about a little girl named Lily. It’s summer, and Lily spends lots of time at the community pool, where she sees Tamika. Lily decides that Tamika will be her new best friend. But Tamika already has a best friend and no matter how hard Lily tries, she can’t seem to impress Tamika. The story tells about the difficulties of finding a friend.
My daughter Lisa and I read the book together. She said that she would give the book three stars. But I would give it just two stars. I especially did not like the topic. I think as a parent we should explain to our children that when someone is being mean and ignoring you, pushing harder will not make them like you more. We should also tell them that it’s OK to walk away from someone who is not showing true interest in being your friend. I wouldn’t recommend the book. But through writing the book, Mary Ann Rodman did open the doors for me to teach Lisa that some people are mean and that it’s OK to walk away from them and make new friends.

A British woman, Dr. Mantri, growing up in India started to notice his son, Dhruv, was struggling with simple arithmetic when he was in fifth-grade. After noticing this, she started employing an abacus (算盘) to help her son visually comprehend mathematics.
“I would ask him something like 35 minus 13 and he couldn’t do it.” said Dhruv’s mom Dr. Mantri. “I decided to change the way he looked at numbers,” she said. “An abacus is a tried and tested method, and the Egyptians used them for building the pyramid.” In just six days he started to show progress with the abacus and would go on to become a whizz kid with numbers, with even his classmates’ parents reaching out for help.
She never thought she would teach her son using an abacus, which she used as a child in India and it was always helpful. Within six days she started to notice a difference and see results. So dramatic was the turnaround, that school staff asked him to perform with the abacus at an assembly, where some parents even came to ask for advice on using it for their kids.
IT specialist Dr. Mantri said the humble abacus can be used for calculations into the trillions and kids enjoy learning on it because it’s like a game. “It becomes a playing tool for younger children, for it feels like a game. I think the success comes because children can touch and feel an abacus and visualize them.” She added.
By the age of 12, Dhruv was giving online cyber security seminars and is now pursuing a career in data science and analytics. Dhruv has now landed an apprenticeship (实习) at an international firm. During the four-year apprenticeship, he will spend one day a week studying Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at Glasgow Caledonian University. “He is so confident now and I am so proud,” she said, with Dhruv adding “I don’t think my teachers would have guessed that I would be following a career in data science at that time.”
24.Why did Dhruv have difficulty in learning mathematics?
A.He was faced with language barrier. B.He didn’t find a proper way.
C.He suffered from eyesight problems. D.He lacked academic support from the family.
25.What does the underlined word “whizz” in paragraph 2 mean?
    A.Careful. B.Diligent. C.Outstanding. D.Struggling.
26.Why do kids like learning on abacus according to the text?
A.They find it appealing. B.They can calculate faster.
C.They enjoy playing games. D.They are eager for success.
27.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Dhruv was addicted to the internet at 12.
B.Dhruv is teaching data science and analytics now.
C.Dhruv is a full-time student at Glasgow Caledonian University.
D.Dhruv’s career choice was beyond his teachers’ expectation.
    【答案】24.B    25.C    26.A    27.D
根据第一段中“After noticing this, she started employing an abacus (算盘) to help her son visually comprehend mathematics.(注意到这一点后,她开始用算盘来帮助儿子直观地理解数学)”及第二段中“In just six days he started to show progress with the abacus and would go on to become a whizz kid with numbers(在短短6天里,他开始在算盘方面取得进步,并成为了数字方面的能手)”可知,Dhruv五年级时在算术方面很吃力,他的妈妈用算盘来帮助他直观地理解数学,他取得了很大进步,由此可知一开始Dhruv在学习算术方面有困难是因为他没有找到合适的方法。故选B。
根据画线词前“In just six days he started to show progress with the abacus(在短短6天里,他开始在算盘方面取得进步)”及后面“with even his classmates’ parents reaching out for help(甚至他同学的父母都向他求助)”可知,此处指Dhruv在使用算盘后成为了数字方面的能手,whizz意为“优秀的,出色的”。故选C。
根据倒数第二段“IT specialist Dr. Mantri said the humble abacus can be used for calculations into the trillions and kids enjoy learning on it because it’s like a game. “It becomes a playing tool for younger children, for it feels like a game. I think the success comes because children can touch and feel an abacus and visualize them.” She added.( IT专家Mantri博士说,简单的算盘可以用来计算万亿,孩子们喜欢学习它,因为它就像一个游戏。‘对于年幼的孩子来说,它变成了一个游戏工具,因为它感觉像一个游戏。我认为成功的原因在于孩子们可以触摸和感觉算盘,并将其形象化。’她补充道)”可知,孩子喜欢用算盘学习是因为它就像一个游戏,对孩子来说有吸引力。故选A。
根据最后一段中“I don’t think my teachers would have guessed that I would be following a career in data science at that time.(我认为我的老师当时不会想到我会从事数据科学的职业)”可知,Dhruv的职业选择超出了老师的预期。故选D。
    C
Lawns (草坪). They’re part of American life. Over a century, from around the 1870s to the 1970s, Americans slowly fell in love with lawns. Lawns were a sign of taste, calm, power and order, especially after World War II. Over the past 50 years, we’ve slowly fallen out of love with lawns. They began to signal waste, disregard and disagreement.
“Wasn’t there something a bit wasteful about millions of Americans applying millions of pounds of fertilizer and pouring millions of gallons of water on the ground to grow something you couldn’t eat unless you were a Jersey cow?” wrote Ellen Goodman in the Boston Globe way back in 1977.
However,we are still, largely, lawn people. The biggest irrigated (灌溉的) crop, by area, in the United States? Not corn or soybeans or potatoes, but lawns. Unproductive, decorative lawn: around 40 million acres of it, or 2%of the land area of the whole country, according to estimates cited by Garik Gutman, program manager for NASA’s Land-Cover/Land-Use Change Program.
Forty million acres: The entire state of Georgia couldn’t contain America’s total lawn area. And we pour 9 billion gallons of water on landscaping every day, according to the Environmental Protection Organization. Meanwhile, the southwestern United States is suffering a serious drought; the past two decades have been its driest period since the year 800. In a world thirsty for water, lawns actually take up too much water.
Now we have TikTok hashtags (话题标签) such as anti-lawn, which might direct you to a performance of an anti-lawn song by a 27-year-old Nashville musician named Mel Bryant. “At the time, all of my neighbors were crazy about their lawns,”says Bryant, who wrote the song on Earth Day 2020.“Everyone was cutting grass, every day. At any point in time you’d hear lawn grass cutting machines going. And it drove me crazy. I still have this one neighbor who,I promise,on the Fourth of July was cutting grass at 7:30 pm. What are you doing, man? This can wait.”
28.What can best describe Americans’ attitude towards lawns?
    A.Cautious. B.Changeable.
    C.Uninterested. D.Conventional.
29.What is the most irrigated crop in America?
    A.Corn. B.Soybeans. C.Potatoes. D.Lawns.
30.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
    A.Reasons for poor lawn growth.
    B.The consequences of droughts.
    C.Measures for drought prevention.
D.Too much water consumption on lawns.
31.What message might Mel Bryant convey in his song?
    A.Opposition to lawns.
    B.Enthusiasm for gardening.
    C.Desire for freedom.
    D.Doubts about holiday traditions.
    【答案】28.B    29.D    30.D    31.A
根据第一段中的“Over a century, from around the 1870s to the 1970s,Americans slowly fell in love with lawns. Lawns were a sign of taste, calm, power and order, especially after World War Ⅱ. Over the past 50years,we’ve slowly fallen out of love with lawns. They began to signal waste, disregard and disagreement.( 从19世纪70年代到20世纪70年代,美国人慢慢爱上了草坪。那时草坪是品味、冷静、权力和秩序的象征,尤其是在第二次世界大战之后。然而在过去的50年里,美国人又逐渐开始不喜欢草坪。草坪成了浪费、漠视和分歧的标志)”可推断出,美国人对草坪的态度是不断变化的。故选B项。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“he biggest irrigated(灌溉的)crop, by area,in the United States? Not corn or soybeans or potatoes, but lawns.( 按面积计算,美国最大的灌溉作物是什么?不是玉米、大豆或土豆,而是草坪)”可知,按面积计算,美国最大的灌溉作物不是玉米和大豆,也不是土豆,而是草坪,故选D项。
30.主旨大意题。根据第四段第一句“Forty million acres: The entire state of Georgia couldn’t contain America’s total lawn area.( 4000万英亩,整个乔治亚州都不够美国的草坪总面积)”可知,美国的草坪面积之大以至于超过了整个乔治亚州的面积。
根据文章最后一段第一句“Now we have TikTok hashtags(话题标签)such as #anti-lawn,which might direct you to a performance of an anti-lawn song by a 27-year-old Nashville musician named Mel Bryant.(现在,我们在TikTok上有了反草坪的标签,这可能会引导你观看27岁的纳什维尔音乐家梅尔·布莱恩特的一首反草坪歌曲的表演)”以及“At any point in time you’d hear lawn grass cutting machines going. And it drove me crazy(在任何时候,你都会听到草坪割草机在运转,这让我抓狂)”可知, Mel Bryant在他的歌曲里表达的内容是反对种植草坪,故选A项。
    D
Few would question that arts, in its massive forms and media, are like a mirror that reflects the social, cultural, economic or even political situation of a society of a particular era. However, beyond being simply an illustration of the human condition, arts can be vital in pushing the country forward culturally and economically.
Without doubt, arts are important for the progress of society. They enable individuals to develop on the whole and deepen the social ties in communities by gathering people to create, experience and enjoy art together, which can be seen from traditional ethnic dances to interactive theatre performanccs. Beyond material wants and needs, human beings find fulfilment in experiencing and expressing things of remarkable value through arts. Meanwhile, strong citizens’ participation in arts also strengthens the social fabric of a nation.
Moreover, arts enable a nation to progress in human rights and values. As powerful media that are able to stir hearts and cause reflection, arts can speak up the human voice of criticism sharply and clearly in times of crisis, and call upon society to seek the common good. It is evident that arts, which express human values and emotions, can constitute a profound way of promoting human dignity and additionally, form the barrier of the ethical and moral life of society.
More often than not, a booming arts scene may not narrow the rich-poor divide. It’s not hard to see that in a highly competitive world, it is essential for govemments to prioritize the development of a strong workforce and the building of sustainable industries. However, arts may well complement (补充) economic policies as arts encourage individuals to exercise creativity. As Albert Einstein stated, imagination is more important than knowledge. While knowledge and professional skills may stimulate a country’s development, the ability to innovate and think out of the box may be valuable to a society facing ever new and unpredictable challenges.
While the importance of arts may differ from country to country, depending on its economic circumstances and the socio-political issues, the importance of arts to the progress of a nation should not be overlooked.
32.What’s the first paragraph mainly about?
    A.The forms of arts.
    B.The functions of arts.
    C.The definition of arts.
    D.The development of arts.
33.How do arts influence human rights and values?
    A.By reflecting humans’ views.
B.By pointing out the common good.
C.By giving people a sense of fulfilment.
D.By forming the moral standard of society.
34.Why is Albert Einstein mentioned in paragraph 4?
    A.To praise Albert Einstein’s achievements.
B.To call on humans to remember our history.
C.To stress the importance of arts in creativity.
D.To show the necessity of knowledge and skills.
35.What will the author probably agree with?

What a comedian can teach you about managing stress
We often accept stress as part of the cost of modern life, but it really doesn’t have to be. We all know that laughter is the best medicine. ____36____ People who can laugh at their own misfortunes bounce back faster and stronger. Here is what a comedian says about coping with stress.
You can try to find a different perspective. ____37____ Once a friend of mine fell asleep in the middle of a class. His teacher decided to make fun of him by inviting students to applaud, wondering whether my friend would applaud along when he woke up. He did and the whole class burst outlaughing. After learning everything, he was both embarrassed and ashamed of course but after a while, my friend laughed. “If this had happened to someone else, it would have been amusing. So it’s no less funny, just because it happened to me. “
____38____ There’s no doubt that we all experience great stress now and then. We’ve all been personally affected, in some way. You might not have felt like laughing at the time But now, looking back, you could consider all of the strange aspects of the experience and all of the things you did to keep active or simply stay sane
When you share stories with your friends, you can choose to share stories of trauma (创伤) and pain, or you can choose to lift their spirits with stories of hope and growth. ____39____ Take the exact same story and change the focus from “feel sorry for me” to “laugh with me”. Keep in mind that we’re all in this together, that we all share the same ridiculous experiences, and that we can laugh together at whatever life throws at us. ____40____
    A.Always share a good story.
B.Why not do what comedians do?
C.You can also look again and laugh.
D.But laughter does more than cheer you up.
E.Then you are able to make a simple choice.
F.In this way. you will say goodbye to stress forever.
G.If you have trouble seeing the funny side, you may find the following inspiring.
36.前文提到“We all know that laughter is the best medicine.”(我们都知道笑容是最好的良药),后文提到“People who can laugh at their own misfortunes bounce back faster and stronger.”(能对自己的不幸一笑置之的人能更快更坚强地振作起来。) D项“But laughter does more than cheer you up.”(但是笑不仅仅是让你开心。)旨在说明笑不只是让人心情好起来,它还有后文提到的“Here is what a comedian says about coping with stress.”(以下是一位喜剧演员对应对压力的看法。)
37.第二段第一句提到“You can try to find a different perspective. ”(你可以尝试换个角度)。下文作者讲了朋友的一个故事,旨在证明只要找到了好笑的点,就可以把一件尴尬的事情变成一件好笑的事情。而读者可以从这个故事里获得灵感,受到鼓舞。从上下文可以得知,这个角度实际上指的是看到事情的有趣的地方,找到好笑的点。G项“If you have trouble seeing the funny side, you may find the following inspiring.”(如果你很难看到有趣的一面,你可能会发现下面的故事很鼓舞人心。)
38.空处位于段首,由此判断该句应为该段的主题句,后文提到“You might not have felt like laughing at the time But now, looking back, you could consider all of the strange aspects of the experience and all of the things you did to keep active or simply stay sane (神志正常的) .”(当时你可能不想笑,但现在,回头看,你可以考虑所有奇怪的方面的经验和所有的事情,你做了保持活跃或只是保持理智。) C项“You can also look again and laugh.”(你可以回过头看看,然后大笑一场) 该项符合文意,故选C。
39.前文提到“When you share stories with your friends, you can choose to share stories of trauma (创伤) and pain, or you can choose to lift their spirits with stories of hope and growth.”(当你和朋友分享故事时,你可以选择分享创伤和痛苦的故事,也可以选择用希望和成长的故事来鼓舞他们的精神。)后文提到“Take the exact same story and change the focus from “feel sorry for me” to “laugh with me”. ”(以同样的故事为例,把重点从“为我感到难过”转变为“和我一起笑”。)由此判断,该段说明可以把难过的事情转换成另外一个方面去吸收。结合文章标题“What a comedian can teach you about managing stress”(喜剧演员可以教你如何管理压力)可知,喜剧演员会让观众一起笑起来。B项“Why not do what comedians do?”(为什么不学学喜剧演员呢?)B项符合文意,故选B。
40.前文提到“Keep in mind that we’re all in this together, that we all share the same ridiculous experiences, and that we can laugh together at whatever life throws at us. ”(请记住,我们都在一起,我们都有同样荒谬的经历,我们可以一起嘲笑生活给我们的任何东西。),此空前面建议人们要认识到每个人都会经历不好的事情,无论经历什么,我们都可以发笑。所以此空应该是这么做的好处。E项“Then you are able to make a simple choice.”(然后你就可以做一个简单的选择。)

    Dusty, the Wonder Dog
When I was a kid, my godparents, Uncle Nell and Aunt Frances, brought me a four-month-old puppy. She was half German shepherd, half collie. As her pink tongue tickled(挠痒)my face with wet licks,it was love at first hug.
My family named the puppy Dusty. Although I wanted to lay sole claim to her affection,in a family of seven kids, no one lays permanent claim to the family pet.
Dusty was our dog, not “my” dog. We soon realized that she had the patience of Buddha. My baby sister often transformed Dusty’s warm fur into a nap-time pillow-falling asleep on the rug. Like a protective mother, Dusty waited-without moving-until my sister woke.
Dusty doubled as a school crossing guard, too. Monday through Friday she’d walk us kids two blocks to St. Patrick’s Parochial, looking both ways to check for traffic before allowing us to cross the street. We’d wave good-bye as we entered the door, knowing Dusty would be waiting at the school door to claim us at the close of the school day.
Of all the contributions Dusty made to our family, one incident stands out far and above all others. Late one night Dusty rushed to my parents’ bedroom. She barked and barked. When she got no response, Dusty raced upstairs to my bedroom and my brothers’ bedroom and barked again and again. When she failed to fully wake us, she flew back down the steps and retimed to my parents’ room. Finally, she got Mom’s attention.
“What are you doing, Dusty?” Mom snapped, still halfway in dreamland. Dusty persisted. Finally my mother gave in. “Okay, what is it?”
Dusty whined(哀嚎)and rushed out of Mom’s room. Thinking the dog needed to be let out to relieve herself, my mother followed Dusty to the front door.
When Mom opened the door to let her out, Dusty tore across the street, not stopping to do her business as my mother had assumed. Then she discovered what Dusty already knew.
    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

The house across the street, where my best friend Marianne lived, was on fire. All of Dusty’s middle-of-the-night craziness had served a purpose:she’s been trying to call for help.Dusty ran to Marianne’s front door, scratched the door and kept barking. My mother alerted the fire department immediately.Soon, the firemen in their trucks roared up the street, squelching the blaze and saving my best friend’s family from harm and their house from total ruin.Marianne’s mother thanked the firemen with tears and the firemen said it was my mother’s timely alarm call that saved them and their house.
However,my mother refused to take all the credit(赞扬).“It was Dusty,”she told the firefighters.“She saved them. Not me.” It was then that we see that the real hero was sitting beside me silently.I put my arms around her neck and kissed her square on the tip of her wet nose.“Thank you for saving Marianne,”I whispered into Dusty’s tan and black ear.“You’re the bravest dog I’ve ever known.” Dusty wagged her tail and licked my face. That old familiar rush of puppy love overtook me.I smiled and promised to let her sleep in my bed for the rest of her life.
