Google Photos stands out among hundreds of photo apps. With basic editing tools and the ability to make albums, it not only gives you unlimited storage for photos and videos, but aims to be your first and last stop after taking a picture. David and Jessica Burnett were at the Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport about to board a flight with their two small children when they saw their son, Ezekiel, 5, throw his beloved stuffed (填充的) bear high above his head. David Burnett warned his son not to throw Teddy too high. Ezekiel kept playing his catch game and threw Teddy more than 20 feet. This time the bear didn’t come down. It was stuck in the rafters (椽子) at the Milwaukee airport, and there wasn’t time to ask anyone for help because it was time to board their flight home to Dallas.
The couple did their best to comfort Ezekiel and his concerned sister, Zaria, on the flight home and were relieved when Ezekiel seemed content to sleep with a favorite stuffed dog that night. “We didn’t call the airport because Ezekiel has lost a lot of toys over the years,” said Jessica Burnett, 39. “I did feel some mom guilt, so later I bought him a bear online that looked similar to Teddy.”
Then on the evening of Feb. 8, Jessica said she spotted a familiar face on Facebook. Somebody at the airport noticed Teddy in the lost lockup area and posted about him a: couple of times on Facebook, Some of the photos showed him hanging out with a purple monkey named Violet the airport’s longest lost stuffed animal. Airport workers regularly post about missing toys and stuffed animals and they had tried unsuccessfully to find Violet’s owner for two years. They hoped to have better luck with Teddy.
The big moment finally happened when the family caught a plane back to Dallas about a year later. When Ezekiel saw his lost bear, he hugged Teddy and told airport workers that he was happy to see him again. “I think they took good care of him. But I’m glad he’s home,” he said. “I won’t be throwing my favorite bear into the air again anytime.”

A star athlete at the college where I work recently stopped by my office. After committing a few unforced errors during a weekend match, she suffered severely by self-criticism.
This student, like many I teach, strongly believes she should be able to control the outcomes of her life by virtue of her hard work. In her mind, “Nothing can stop me but myself”. So when these students fall short of what they imagine they should accomplish, they are filled with self-blame, reasoning, “If my accomplishments are mine to control, my failures must be entirely my faults, too”, which makes it extremely difficult for them to move on.
We often owe young adults struggling with failure to their parents’ overprotection of them from discomfort. But there is another factor at play: a message transmitted by indulging (纵容的) parents who have falsely promised them that they can achieve anything if they are willing to work for it. However, the cruel reality of life is that you can do everything in your power — and still fail. Then what should be done to help?
Psychologists Luthar and Kumar urged parents and teachers to spend time helping students find purpose, or goals they genuinely love to pursue and that make an impact on the world, which may help them gain greater life satisfaction and become more psychologically mature. Besides, instead of allowing our kids to beat themselves up when things don’t go their way, we might all question a culture where one is considered lazy without full devotion. The point is to remind them that life has a way of sucker-punching (出其不意) us when we least expect it. It’s often the people who learn to say “stuff happens” who get up the fastest.
28. What does the underlined phrase “by virtue of” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. in addition to B. in spite of C. by means of D. for fear of
29. Why do young adults find it hard to struggle with failure?
A. They are not taught how to deal with difficulties.
B. They are short of the ability to handle failure.
C. They are under the protection of their parents.
D. They are misled by their parents’ false message.
30. What did psychologists Luthar and Kumar urge parents and teachers to do?
A. To teach students how to avoid faults.
B. To lead students to set their truly loved goals.
C. To help students to discover a path to success.
D. To allow kids to blame themselves.
31. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Students don’t care about failure at all.
B. Students are sure to succeed if they try their best.
C. Students should bear all the failures on their own.
D. Students with positive attitudes can move on more easily.
D
Hedgerows(矮树篱)are as British as fish and chips, the national dish of Great Britain. Without these walls of trees, shrubs or grasses, the country’s scenery wouldn’t be the same. Over the centuries, large numbers of hedgerows were planted to keep in farm animals, and some of today’s are as historic as many old churches, dating back as far as 800 years. Here hedge laying — the art of planting and shaping hedges — is a specialized skill that has been practiced for hundreds of years. Today, Britain has about 435,000 miles of them, a length that is greater than that of its roads.
In recent years, scientists have come to view these man-made structures as important ecosystems. The best-studied benefit of hedgerows is the remarkable biodiversity — the variety of different types of animals and plants living together — they maintain. One 2019 study in Belgium found that hedgerows contained more species of nonwoody flowering plants in a given area than forests did. More plant species often mean more animals. One British scientist, who spent two years observing an old hedgerow near his home, counted an amazing 2,070 species visiting and living in it — mostly insects, but also birds rats, lizards, etc.
Lauren Ponisio, a researcher at the University of Oregon, found in 2016 that growing a 300-meter hedgerow would help save around $4,000 in pest-control and pollination costs over seven years. Curiously, besides pollinating the crops themselves, the wild bees encourage non-native honeybees introduced by farmers to become more efficient pollinators, too. “Introduced honeybees are super lazy, and they’ ll be like ‘Yes, I will just hang out on this flower forever,’” Ponisio explains. But upon meeting a wild bee, they’ll fly off to the next flower or plant.
There’s now a growing drive for expanding hedgerows. In the UK, Natural England has planned to increase the country’s hedgerow network by 40 percent. Recently the French government announced plans to plant an additional 4,300 miles. Even in the US, where hedgerows are much less of a cultural legacy(遗产), the government has begun to realize the many important benefits of planting hedgerows. More American farmers are receiving money provided by the US Natural Resources Conservation Service, which helps pay for planting pollinator habitats.
32. What can we learn about hedgerows in Britain?
A.They are usually planted near roads.
B.They were used to surround churches.
C. They were closely connected to fish and chips.
D. They are of cultural and historical importance.
33. What is a major benefit of hedgerows according to paragraph 2?
A.Reducing the costs of farming.
B.Improving the production of crops.
C.Attracting many different kinds of wildlife.
D.Protecting forests in some particular areas.
34. What influence will the wild bee have on non-native honeybees?
A.They’ll become more active. B.They’ll pollinate fewer flowers.
C.They’ll be more likely to attack. D.They’ll be happier to live in hedgerows.
35. What is the US government’s attitude to hedgerows?
A.It pays little attention to them.
B.It shows more interest in growing them.
C.It is still doubtful about their benefits.
D.It begins to appreciate their cultural value.

Does speaking on the phone make you nervous?
Speaking with people on the phone is becoming rare these days. Many people prefer to use email or messaging apps to communicate. Sometimes, though, making a phone call is unavoidable. This simple act can actually be an unpleasant experience for some people. 36 If this sounds familiar to you, you might be one of them who suffer from telephobia — the fear of speaking on the phone.
Telephobia is a form of social anxiety. When speaking face to face, we give off lots of facial cues (暗示) that help each other follow the conversation. 37 Very often the idea of speaking on the phone makes some people so frightened that they will freeze up or lose control of the conversation. However, there are things that they can do to ease this fear.
One thing that those with telephobia can do before making a call is smile. 38 It won’t get rid of the anxiety altogether, but it will relieve it. Similarly, imagining how the call will go before you make it can also help things go more smoothly. 39 That will make you feel less nervous and may help you predict any possible problems.
40 Well, you don’t always have to pick up the phone. There’s nothing wrong with calling the person back later when you feel more comfortable. So the next time your phone starts ringing, remember speaking on the phone doesn’t have to make you nervous. The important thing is to be aware of your fear and take steps to deal with it.
- This is not the case over the phone.
- Their hearts may race at the very thought.
- What are the basic rules of making phone calls?
- Just run through a positive conversation in your head.
- What should you do when you’re faced with receiving a call?
- It may sound silly, but smiling can help you feel more relaxed.
- Remember to smile politely when you are introduced to someone.

The spot of red was what first caught Randy Heiss’s attention on December 16, 2018. He was hiking the remote land behind his farm in a small town near the U.S.-Mexico border, and there lying on the grass was a balloon. He walked toward it with his dog, thinking he should pick it up and throw it away.
That’s when he noticed the balloon’s string was attached to a piece of paper. “Dayami,” it read on one side, in a child’s writing. Heiss flipped the paper over. On the back he saw a numbered list, all in Spanish. His Spanish wasn’t very good, but he could see it was a Christmas list!
Heiss was charmed. He suspected that a child had tried to send Santa Claus a Christmas wish list by balloon, something he used to do himself when he was a kid. Nobody had ever returned the letters Heiss had sent, but he wondered whether he could find the girl who had sent this one.
It would be difficult, but Heiss had a few clues. About 20 miles to the southwest, just across the border, was the city of Nogales, Mexico, with a population of about a quarter million. Based on the wind direction, he was almost sure that was where it came from. Heiss brought the note home to his wife, who is fluent in Spanish and helped him translate the list. They determined that Dayami, probably a girl, had asked for a doll, a dollhouse, doll clothes and art supplies.
Heiss then posted his search about finding Dayami on Facebook, attaching photos, hoping some of his friends in Nogales might know the girl’s family. A few days passed with no results; Heiss worried that time was running out before Christmas. On December 19, 2018, he decided to send a private Facebook message to Radio Xeny, an AM radio station based in Nogales. To his surprise, someone from the station called him back right away and promised him to post his search on the station’s Facebook page immediately.
