I worked in a small drug store when I was very small. I worked long and hard because that was my father’s store. I treasured my lunch breaks, not for the food or the rest, but for reading comic books about superheroes. And I could read comic books only during my lunch breaks.
Now I close my eyes and think back, I know what I wanted to be when I was a small kid—a superhero! Superman, Batman, Spider-Man and Iron Man were some of my heroes. In all of the comic books that I read, there were two patterns.
First, there was always a battle between good and evil. The battle was always tough. No matter how strong or how many powers the superhero had, evil could almost defeat him. Second, the superhero was never paid for his contribution to society. Superman made money as Clark Kent, a newspaper reporter. Batman made money as Bruce Wayne, a rich businessman. Spider-Man made money as Peter Parker, a photographer. Iron Man made money as Tony Stark, a rich scientist. None of them was paid for keeping peace or helping others.
The real superheroes don’t get paid for what they do for society!
I clean the local park with my friends every weekend. I help cheer up kids in the hospital. I send food to disabled people. I don’t get paid for doing these in my free time. It’s correct to be fairly compensated but I simply choose not to. I feel my dream has come true!
Volunteering and helping people without getting paid is what superheroes do. You can be a superhero, too.
4. Why did the writer value the lunch breaks?
A. He could take delicious food. B. He could free from the hard work.
C. He could do what he liked to do. D. He could act as a superhero.
5. The underlined word “compensated” can be replaced by “ ”.
A. rewarded B. refused C. admitted D. bargained
6. How did the writer realize his dream?
A. By working hard in the store. B. By performing voluntary work.
C. By doing a lot of reading. D. By choosing the right job.
7. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Volunteering is fun. B. Comic books and my childhood.
C. Be a superhero. D. Do superheroes get paid?

Can you imagine a world without music? Studies show that public schools across the country are cutting back on music classes to save money. Worse, some schools have never had music classes to begin with. But without them, students' academic growth and emotional health could suffer. In fact, music classes are necessary for all students in schools.
Recent studies by Brown University have shown that students who received music education classes were better in math and reading skills than those without music classes. Another study by The College Board found that students taking music and art classes got higher points. Students' academic success seems to depend on their taking part in music education.
Music programs in public schools also help to add to a student's sense of pride and self-confidence. Teens today have too many learning tasks. Besides, they have family problems, self-confidence problems, relationship troubles, and choices about drugs and alcohol. All of these can stop academic success, but music education can help. A study by The Texas Commission on Drug and Alcohol Abuse found that students who took part in school music programs were less likely to turn to drugs. Music programs encourage students to work together to produce an excellent performance.
Music crosses language, class, cultural and political boundaries (界限). Music allows students from different countries to connect. For example, at a school talent show, a new Japanese student played a piano duet (二重奏) with an American classmate. Although they could not communicate verbally (口头上), they were able to read the music in order to play the duet. Two students from different cultures worked as a team with self-confidence and common purpose through music.
The gift of music is priceless. We need to be sure to have necessary music classes for all students. The world is losing its music, and putting music into schools is the first step to get it back.
8. Education with music classes could ________.
A. waste a lot more money from parents
B. help students improve their school work
C. lead to a lot of emotional problems easily
D. have a bad influence on the quality of education
9. The two studies seem to show that ________.
A. students with great success attended music lessons
B. not all students took part in music lessons
C. music plays an important role in students' success
D. students having music classes are better in all lessons
10. The example in Paragraph 4 mainly suggests that ________.
A. Japan has a good international relationship with America
B. different cultures have different styles of music
C. music makes cross-border communication possible
D. Japanese and American students are good at playing the piano
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Music—a bridge to understanding
B. How to get music back
C. The importance of listening to music
D. Music education in schools

A team of researchers has created a website—emojify.info, where the public can try outemotion recognition systems through their computer cameras. Researchers hope it can make the public know about the technology and promote discussions about its use.
“It is a form of facial recognition, but it goes further because rather than just identifying people, it claims to read our emotions and our inner feelings from our faces,” said Dr Alexa Hagerty, project lead and researcher at the University of Cambridge Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence and the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk.
Hagerty said many people were not aware of how common emotion recognition systems were, noting they were used in situations ranging from job hiring, to airport security and even to education to see if students are doing their homework. Such technology, she said, was in use all over the world, from Europe to the US and China.
However, Hagerty emphasized that emotion recognition technology might have some potential benefits, but these must be weighed against concerns around accuracy, human rights, as well as whether the technology was even the right tool for a particular job.
In one game, users are invited to pull a series of faces to fake emotions and see if the system is fooled. “It is said that the technology is reading emotions,” said Hagerty. But, she added, actually, the system was reading facial expressions and then combining them with the assumption that those movements are linked to emotions, for example, a smile means someone is happy. However, human experience showed it was possible to fake a smile. “That is what that game was: to show you didn't change your inner state of feeling rapidly six times, you just changed the way you looked on your face,” Hagerty said.
Some emotion recognition researchers say they are aware of such limitations. Vidushi Marda, senior programme officer at the human rights organization Article 19 said it was important to stop the growing market for emotion recognition systems. She said, by reading and classifying human beings into categories that touch upon the most personal aspects of humans, emotion recognition technology doesn't also agree with human rights, according to the organization's website.
“The important learning from the development and use of facial recognition systems across the world has been to question the validity and the necessity for technologies early and often, and projects that focus on the limitations and dangers of emotion recognition are an important step in that direction,” she said.
12. Why did researchers create emojify.info?
A. To improve emotion recognition technology.
B. To bring emotion recognition into public daily life.
C. To draw public attention to emotion recognition technology.
D. To call for more researchers to study emotion recognition technology.
13. What does the third paragraph mainly focus on?
A. The potentials of emotion recognition technology.
B. The wide use of emotion recognition technology.
C. The advantages of emotion recognition technology.
D. The rapid development of emotion recognition technology.
14. What can we learn about the website of emojify.info?
A. It will often fool the users. B. It can accurately read users' emotions.
C. It recognizes expressions rather than emotions. D. It sounds an alarm when people fake a smile.
15. What does Vidushi Marda think of emotion recognition systems?
A. A losing battle B. A quick-fix method C. A high point D. A well-meant proposal

分析句子可知,“(date)back to 1969”作状语,date与逻辑主语a US defense是主动关系,用现在分词形式作状语,故填Dating。

由the NSFNET network(国家科学基金会网络)后来又被称为the Inter-Network(互联网)可知,应用be known as“被称为”,是固定短语。故填as。

make it +adj.+for sb. to do是固定用法,意为“使某人做某事是……”,故填it。
分析句子成分可知,“___9___ (design) by him”作后置定语修饰句子的主语The first “web browser”(第一个“网络浏览器”),design和The first “web browser”之间是被动关系,因此要用过去分词作定语,故填designed。
故填to access。

Dear Harry,
Knowing that you are interested in what impacts the Internet has on Chinese students’ ways of learning, I’m writing to give you a brief introduction.
The Internet has brought new ways to explore knowledge. It enables both teachers and students to reach out beyond the classrooms. For instance, students can take online classes to broaden their horizons and teachers can send and check homework via the Internet. However, the information available ranges in quality from wonderful, to poor, to completely unreliable. Some students are overdependent on it, thus losing their independent thinking.
To my mind, students should be cautious about the online resources and should learn to distinguish the worthwhile contents from the misleading ones.
Yours,
Li Hua

Christmas Day was coming. I was just a kid then, and my big sister told me there was no Santa Claus. I fled to my Grandma because she would be straight with me. I knew Grandma always told me the truth. Grandma was home, and I told her everything. She was ready for me. “No Santa Claus !” She shouted. “Ridiculous! Don't believe it.” That rumor has been going around for years, and it makes me mad, plain mad.
“Now, put on your coat, and let's go.”
“Go where, Grandma?” I asked. “Where” turned out to be Kerby's General Store, the one store in town that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked through its doors, Grandma handed me ten dollars. “Take this money.” she said, “and buy something for someone who needs it. I'll wait for you in the car.” Then she turned and walked out of Kerby's.
I was only eight years old. I'd often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for anything all by myself. The store seemed big and crowded, full of people competing to finish their Christmas shopping. For a few moments I just stood there, confused, holding that ten﹣dollar bill, wondering what to buy and who to buy it for. I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker, who was a kid with bad breath and messy hair. He sat right behind me in Mrs Pollock's grade﹣two class.
Bobby Decker didn't have a coat. I knew that because he never went out for recess during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but we kids knew that Bobby Decker didn't have a cough, and he didn't have a coat. I would buy Bobby Decker a coat! I settled on a red one, which looked really warm, and he would like that.
“Is this a Christmas present for someone?” the lady behind the counter asked kindly, as I laid my ten dollars down. “Yes.”
The nice lady smiled at me, put the coat in a bag and wished me a Merry Christmas.
Para 1:
That evening, Grandma helped me wrap the coat in Christmas paper.

Para 2:
Grandma and I waited breathlessly for Bobby Decker's front door to open and finally it opened.

Paragraph 1:
That evening, Grandma helped me wrap the coat in Christmas paper. She wrote “To Bobby, From Santa Claus” on it, after which she drove me over to Bobby Decker's house, explaining I was officially one of Santa's helpers. Grandma parked down the street form Bobby's house, and I took a deep breath, and dashed for his front door. Seeing no other people notice us, I put the Christmas present down, pounded his doorbell and then Grandma and I hid in the car.
Paragraph 2:
Grandma and I waited breathlessly for Bobby Decker's front door to open and finally it opened. Out went Bobby Decker. Seeing the coat in the bag, he looked very astonished and then called his mother to go out. After hearing them say “Thanks” to Santa Claus, I felt very proud of what I had done. At that time I decided to be Santa's helper for ever. It was on that night that I realized the truth that he who has no Christmas in his heart will never find Christmas under a tree.
如:drive over(开车前往), one of(……其中之一), dash for(冲向……) Seeing no other people notice us, I put the Christmas present down, pounded his doorbell and then Grandma and I hid in the car. It was on that night that I realized the truth that he who has no Christmas in his heart will never find Christmas under a tree.
