阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Can you survive an unannounced storm? Although there is expert broadcasting and we are equipped with cell phones, there are still some instances when the violent weather takes us by surprise.
While most Atlantic hurricanes form off the coast of Africa giving plenty of early warning, sudden Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico hurricanes form and move rapidly in less than a day’s time, endangering everyone and everything in their path.
There have been oil workers trapped off the shore when sudden storms appeared. Field archaeologists have been stuck in coastal areas without storm warning. It wasn’t but a few decades ago that a Texas National Guard group was trapped on the beach by rain-forced flooding and had to ride out a major hurricane during a training exercise. There have been a few instances when travelers were trapped on an island or in a coastal area and unable to escape in time.
Escaping from the storm-threatened areas is generally a choice for most of us---but not for all. Each year thousands of islanders across the Caribbean face the danger of hurricanes without so much as a public shelter to hide in. Most ride out the storm in their homes.
But there are a few things you can do to prepare yourself for some unexpected emergencies. Being prepared for the unexpected may be your best and only defense. If you’re headed outdoors for a few days or weeks, you should always carry a flashlight with extra batteries, a GPS device (装置), and a basic medical box. If you’re traveling in your car, remember you may suffer from high winds. You’d better not stay inside to avoid being blown away along with your car. Keeping your head and your courage up is essential to survival in any type of danger. Let common sense guide you and always be prepared for the worst.

I went to the British Museum to seek the treatment for a slight sickness that I fancied I had. I got the book, aimlessly turned the leaves and studied diseases generally. 1 forgot which was the first fearful disease I dived into but, before 1 had glanced half down the list of “symptoms”,I was sure I had fairly got it.
I sat for a while, frozen with horror. I read attentively again and the only disease I concluded I hadn’t got was housemaids knee (髌前滑囊炎).
I felt rather hurt at first. Why hadn’t I got housemaids knee? It’s unfair.
After a while, I became less greedy, realizing I had every other known disease in the medicine and grew content to do without housemaid's knee.
I went to my doctor. He is my old friend and always helps me for nothing. So I though I would do him a good tum by going to him now. “What a doctor wants is practice. He shall have me. He will get more practice out of me than out of seventeen hundred ordinary patients with only one or two diseases each.” So I went straight up to see him. He said, “Well, what's the mater with you?”
“I will not take up your time telling you what is the matter with me. Life is brief, and you might pass away before I had finished. But I will tell you what is not the matter with me. I have not got housemaid's knee. Everything else, however, I have got.”
I told him how I came to discover it all.
Then he wrote out a prescription, folded it up and gave it to me.
I took it to the nearest chemist's and handed it in. The man read it and handed it back. He said he couldn't keep it.
“But you are a chemist?”
“I am a chemist. If I were a cooperative store and a family hotel combined, I might be able to help you. But I am only a chemist.”
I read the prescription. It ran, “1 pound beefsteak every 6 hours; ten-mile walk every morning; bed at 11 sharp every night. And don't stuff up your head with things you don't understand.”
26. What does the underlined word “leaves” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Days for rest.
B. Thin metal sheets.
C. The green parts of a tree.
D. Sheets of paper.
27. Why did the author feel hurt at first?
A. Because he got many diseases.
B. Because he didn't have housemaid's knee.
C. Because he found he was quite greedy.
D. Because he was easily satisfied with himself.
28. Why didn't the chemist take the author's prescription?
A. Because there was not enough medicine in his store.
B. Because the author didn't need to take any medicine.
C. Because the author was beyond cure.
D. Because the author went to the wrong chemist’s.
29. Which of the adjectives can best describe the author?
A. Careful and clever.
B. Humorous and cautious.
C. Sceptical and anxious.
D. Adventurous and curious.
30. What lesson can we draw from the text?
A. Don’t meet the trouble halfway.
B. Don’t put the cart before the horse.
C. Every cloud has a silver lining.
D. Many hands make light work.

BEIJING, China ---Pollution in China remains very serious as the country’s rapid economic growth brings new environmental problems, a minister said Saturday.
Vice Environment Minister Zhang Lijun said China has made progress on environmental protection, but admitted that its rapid economic growth over the past decade has had a negative effect on the environment.
“Our rapid economic development has continuously brought our country new environmental problems, particularly dangerous chemicals, electronic waste and so on. These environmental pollutants (污染物) bring new problems and affect human health,” Zhang told a news conference.
He said that emissions(排放) of traditional pollutants remain high and some areas have failed to meet government standards.
China has pledged to continue reducing emissions this year of three key air pollutants--- ammonia nitrogen, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide. The government has also promised to bring down demand for chemical oxygen---a measure of water pollution by l.5 percent from the 2010 levels.
In the last five years, there were 912 “environmental emergencies” involving heavy metal pollution, including several well-publicized instances of mass contamination, Zhang said. Thousands of children were affected by lead poisoning in several provinces in 2009 and 2010 because they lived near metal smelters or battery factories.
Other incidents included a diesel fuel leak in the Yellow River, chemical contamination(污染) in the northeast Songhua River following a flood, and crude oil leakage off the northeastern coastal city of Dalian after a pipeline burst.
The minister noted that rapid development in the next five years would increase the need for China to improve environmental protection and shift to a more sustainable model of economic development from its dependence on industries which consume huge quantities of energy.
China is focusing on clean energy, including solar, wind and nuclear power, as one way to reduce its dependence on coal, which generates three-quarters of its electricity and is also used for winter heating in northern cities. China also hopes the strategy will reduce its demand for oil and gas and increase economic growth and jobs.
Zhang told reporters there was no plan to adjust China’s overall strategy for nuclear development but he said Beijing will learn lessons from Japan after a violent earthquake resulted in a radioactive leak(放射能泄露).
“Some lessons we learn from Japan will be considered in the making of China’s nuclear power plans,” he said. “But China will not change its determination and plan for developing nuclear power.”
31. According to the minister, the pollution problem requires China to______.
A. slow its economic development
B. ask industries to meet their own standards
C. depend on industries consuming large amounts of energy
D. transform its economic development model
32. From the text, we can know water pollution is partly measured by______.
A. the demand for chemical oxygen
B. the amount of waste gas emissions
C. the degree of heavy metal pollution
D. the number of environmental pollutants
33. According to the text, which of the following is TRUE?
A. Rapid economic growth helps to improve the environment.
B. Dangerous chemicals are one of the traditional pollutants.
C. Coal is used more in northern cities than in southern cities.
D. The use of clean energy will help increase job opportunities.
34. The underlined word “generates” in Paragraph 9 means “______”.
A. reduces
B. transports
C. produces
D. needs
35. What is Zhang’s attitude towards what happened in Japan?
A. He is astonished at it and feels pity for the Japanese people
B. He thinks China will pay more attention to nuclear safety.
C. He thinks Japan should do something to prevent it from happening again.
D. He doesn’t think it will influence China’s nuclear power plans at all.

The future is a land full of unknowns, especially-with new technological developments and new job requirements that the future holds. So how can students prepare themselves for such a future? 36
Allow students to lead their learning.
Many teachers have a “my way or no way” attitude, which negatively impacts a students’ growth as a person and future team member within a company or organization. 37 They can help shape the class and even the syllabus (教学大纲). Opening up to students, listening to their needs early on, and holding meaningful conversations together can create better future employees.
38
Creating situations that encourage students' curiosity is an essential practice for the brain. While curiosity can' t be taught, schools can bring it out of students in particular contexts. Extracurricular activities can help students, for example, break out of everyday academic monotony (单调). In this way, certain curious parts of the brain may be activated.
Encourage collaboration(合作).
39 When different people are encouraged to get together and collaborate, unique ideas can become part of something bigger. Group projects push students to develop decision-making while also building a social setting where work can be done more effectively as part of a collaborative effort.
Help students develop effective communication skills.
Effective communication, either in oral (口头的) or written forms, will be vital in the future workplace. The ability to fully exchange ideas can lead to better working relationships. 40 Good communication is the key to opening a whole new universe of possibilities.
A. Make students curious.
B. Every person is unique in their own way.
C. Create an environment where creativity is valued.
D. Sometimes the solution can be simple: let students lead
E. Learning how to fail can teach some critical and invaluable lessons.
