May 18th marks the World Museum Day. Have a look at some of the world's strangest museums.

    Washington Banana Museum

Ann Mitchell Lovell really loves bananas. In fact, she loves them enough to not only run the Washington Banana Museum, which features almost 4,000 items related to the world's bestselling fruit, but to also upload photos of her favourite items from the museum online so those who can't make it to the physical location can still enjoy the virtual Banana Museum.

    Roswell UFO Museum

Exhibits include information on the Roswell incident of 1947, crop circles, other UFO sightings, Area 51, and abductions(劫持). Beijing Tap Water Museum

One of the key ingredients(原料)you need to make ramen is water, so when you're done with strange museums in Japan, maybe you should head to China to learn more about tap water, specifically the history of the first water plant in Beijing. Here you can study over 300 items to better familiarize yourself with the 100yearold history of tap water in China. It was the first time I watched him carefully. Before this, Jack had just been the friendly young man assigned by the hotel to help me on trips into the wildlife park nearby. But then he caught my attention by asking me to shut up.

“It's just a garden spider, don't scream(尖叫)!” he said, looking at the small thing with more love than I could find in others. I had indeed screamed, but a spider was on my clothes, and we were in the jeep in the middle of the wildlife park.

I wanted him to pick the thing up and throw it out of the jeep right at that moment. However, he did something quite else. He gently let the spider onto his own knee and drove on, as if nothing had happened. I sat there staring at the spider for any sudden movement—if a tiger had walked by then, I would not have even looked at it.

I was frightened that the man was completely OK with a spider on his knee. About 15 minutes later, he pushed his knee forward to the dashboard(仪表盘)and the spider immediately climbed off his knee and onto the jeep. “The poor thing had been trying to get off me,” he said. “I only sensed that it was trying to reach the dashboard, so I helped him.”

I wondered then about this man, who thought about the spider with such kindness. Where and when did I lose my love towards the unfamiliar? Now, when faced with a row of ants in my way, my first thought is no longer to attack them. I just skip over them and we both carry on. The ants were already wise, but thanks to Jack, I learned to live with the not so beautiful bits of nature.

    24. What does the underlined word assigned in Paragraph 1 mean?

    A. Fired.          B. Praised.        C. Sent           D. Interviewed.

    A. She felt sick in the jeep.                  B. She was afraid of visiting the park.

    C. She had a spider on her clothes.            D. She wanted to catch Jack's attention.

    26. How did Jack help the writer?

    A. Throw the spider out of their jeep.            B. Let the spider move onto his leg.

    C. Feed the spider to the tiger walking by.        D. Put the spider on the jeep's dashboard.

    27. What is the text mainly about?

    A. A lesson learned from a young man.          B. A wildlife park adventure.

    C. A spider living in a nature park.              D. A moving love story

    C

The shade of a single tree can provide welcome relief from the hot summer sun. But when that single tree is part of a small forest, it creates a considerable cooling effect. According to a study published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, trees play a big role in keeping our cities cool.

According to the study, the right amount of tree cover can lower summer daytime temperatures by as much as 10 degrees Fahrenheit. And the effect is quite noticeable from neighbourhood to neighbourhood, even down to the scale of a single city block. “We knew that cities are warmer than the surrounding countryside, but we found that temperatures vary just as much within cities,” says Monica Turner, a professor in the department of Integrative Biology, WisconsinMadison University and a coauthor of the study.

With climate change making extreme heat events more common each summer, city planners are working on how to prepare. Heat waves drive up energy demands and costs and can have big human health impacts. One potentially powerful tool, the study's authors say, are organisms that have been around long before human civilizations could appreciate their leafy benefits. And those trees may be the secret to keeping the places we live livable.

Essentially, says Turner, roads, sidewalks and buildings absorb heat from the sun during the day and slowly release that heat at night. Trees, on the other hand, not only shade those surfaces from the sun's rays, they also release water into the air through their leaves, a process that cools things down.

To get the maximum benefit of this cooling service, the study found that tree cover must be more than 40 per cent. In other words, an aerial picture of a single city block would need to be nearly halfway covered by a leafy green network of branches and leaves.

    28. What can we infer from Paragraph 2?

    A. Temperatures in cities mainly depend on their green coverage.

    B. People living and working in cities must plant trees in summer.

    C. Cities are warmer than the countryside because they don't have trees.

    D. An area with more trees can be cooler than the other parts within a city.

    29. Which of the following problems is caused by extreme heat events?

    A. Severe damage of city facilities.         B. Residents` growing demands for plants

    C. Serious human health problems.         D. Unnecessary waste of energy resources.

    30. Why are trees crucial to cities?

    A. They make urban scenery beautiful        B. They help shade and cool the cities.

    C. They build up city cooling systems.        D. They essentially block and release heat.

    31. What can city planners conclude from the study?

    A. They should cover nearly half the city with trees.

    B. They should punish the study in a newspaper

    C. They should educate citizens to protect forests.

    D. They should plant trees on roads and sidewalks.

    D

You have everything you think you need for your dream job, but could something else be holding you back? You possess hard skills for the job, but you may lack soft skills.

Hard skills are things that are measurable and technical. A master's degree in business is a hard skill. The ability to speak Spanish is a hard skill. Many specific qualifications for a job are hard skills, such as years of work experience or proficiency(精通)with particular computer programs.

On the other hand, soft skills are harder to define. And they can't be defined. And they can't be measured. Soft skills covers a wide range of characteristics that you can work on for a lifetime but some of the most common—and most necessary for success—include being a good listener and speaker, a wise leader, a problem solver, a strong communicator or a team player. It's also helpful if you can accept feedback, settle conflicts with others, deal with difficult people or be flexible. These soft skills are what many employers desire.

Soft skills benefit you in many ways. Being a good listener, for example, is very helpful if you're a doctor. Being flexible, a team player and a problem solver help you succeed when dealing with deadlines.

Soft skills are something extra that help a particular person to success. Being able to show you possess them could make a difference in landing a job you'll love, or being more successful in the job you already have. They make the difference between someone who is just OK at their job and someone who is outstanding, the person you always want on your team. In general, soft skills make you more likable and more competent.

Soft skills are what can set people apart from each other on resumes or in job interviews, but soft skills don't come naturally.

    32. Which of the following belongs to hard skills?

    A. Being able to solve problems             B. Communicating with others efficiently.

    C. Being good at expressing oneself.         D. Having a good command of English.

    33. Which of the following is TRUE about soft skills?

    A. They are measurable and technical.            B. They are taught in many universities.

    C. They are desired by many employers.          D. They are specific job qualifications.

    34. What's the best title for the passage?

    A. Hard Skills Differ from Soft Skills           B. Soft Skills Can Be Learnt at School

    C. Soft Skills Needed in Workplace             D. Soft Skills Matter to Your Success at Work

    35. What will be probably talked about following the last paragraph?

    A. Why soft skills are important.        B. How soft skills are developed.

    C. Where soft skills are applied.         D. What the key soft skills are.

On Christmas Eve, seventythreeyearold George selected his food carefully. Skim milk was $2.99, white bread, 89 cents with a 10cent discount. Leaving the cashier desk, he calculated that he had saved 80 cents today.

At the exit the wind reminded him of his gloves. "Where are they?" Not in the coat pockets. Not in the grocery bag either. He was sure he was wearing them when he entered the store. He clearly remembered putting them into the pocket of his coat. George made a second thorough search of all his pockets, again including the grocery bag. Now he was sure they must have been dropped somewhere inside the store.

Old George had bought the black leather gloves at a 25% discount, for just $ 35.00, ten years ago. They were soft and warm and very durable. He had taken care not to let a drop of water or rain touch his expensive gloves, so they looked like new. Losing this favorite possession was almost like losing a child to him.

George, calm on the outside but nervous inside, reentered the store. He followed the same route he had walked before, starting at the bread counter, to the milk section, the corner where salt and sugar were placed, then the rest of the store. Several minutes of anxious searching turned out to be in vain. He asked the customers whether they saw a pair of black leather gloves, but they said no. Then he went over to the cashier without hesitation to ask if she had received any lost gloves, but only received the same answer. His heart grew heavier.

"Society has changed, people have changed,” he murmured to himself. “Years ago, if somebody picked up something lost, they would give it back. Now a good action is lost."

Yet he did not give up hope. He started to stare at anybody wearing black gloves to see if they looked like his. The first two persons he saw did wear gloves, but one was women's and the other not black.

    参考范文

Suddenly, he found a man looking like a lawyer, wearing black leather gloves. Abrupt as it might seem, George came up without hesitation and asked if they were his, but there came a disappointing answer. On second thought, he realized nobody would be so foolish as to wear them right inside the store. He had no other alternative but to ask the cashier to keep them in case the lost gloves were found. Then he dragged his legs towards the exit.

During the whole holiday, he was always thinking whether to buy a new pair. After all in deep winter, he could not do without gloves. Finally poor George decided to buy another pair of leather gloves. With the last ray of hope, he stepped into the store again. No sooner had he opened the door than the cashier told him there was indeed one such pair as he lost. After examining them carefully, he was wild with joy, expressing sincere gratitude and saying to himself that a good action was never lost.
