In the August sun, it’s unbearably ht in my car. I’m in Vancuver, appraching the Knight Street Bridge as I try t get hme after wrk. It’s 5:15 pm. Traffic is already slwing dwn and then it cmes t a full stp. I’m stuck even befre getting n the bridge.
This has becme my nrmal wrk cmmute (上下班往返) rutine. Ahead f me is a heavily jammed n-ramp (匝道). I stare at the endless rws f vehicles, depressed.
At first I think this is nt hw it lks. The traffic will sn start mving. Secnds pass. Minutes pass. Lking at the rws f cars and trucks glittering(闪光)in the sun, I start cunting-299, 300, 301- and I give up.
Suddenly I remember I’m ne f the 300 helpless drivers. But I stay alert(警觉的). When the cars d mve, I mve carefully, making sure nt t bump int ther vehicles. Finally, I make it nt the bridge. The traffic is still crawling at a snail’s pace. Tired and hungry, I becme very anxius.
Just then, I hear a weak sund in the distance. The sund gradually becmes luder, until I can identify it as an ambulance appraching frm behind. What d we d? The bridge is packed. There’s n rm fr us t mve.
But I’m wrng. Every single car quickly, yet carefully, mves t the side. Withut thinking, I fllw suit. The lane remains pen fr a few secnds during which the ambulance flashes thrugh.
Afterward, every car mves back. We clse up the emergency lane, ready t cntinue ur patient wait. Back in my spt, I’m awestruck. I frget my tiredness and hunger. My anxiety is gne. I start reflecting upn what 300 fellw drivers and I just did.
Hw did we d that? Despite ur exhaustin, we cllectively decided t help the stranger wh needed the time mre desperately than we did. We drew n ur sympathy and intelligence, requiring n directives.
Althugh I may seem alne stuck n the bridge, I’m cnnected t all the ther drivers. Tgether we culd make the impssible pssible.
    24. Hw des the authr feel when seeing the n-ramp?

Of the 8,300 millin tns f virgin (原始的) plastic prduced up t the end f 2015, 6,300 millin tns have been discarded (丢弃). Mst f that plastic waste is still with us, buried in landfills r plluting the envirnment. Micrplastics have been fund in Antarctic sea ice, in the guts f animals that live in the deepest cean trenches and in drinking water arund the wrld.
But what if we culd wave a magic wand and remve all plastics frm ur lives? Fr the sake f the planet, it wuld be a tempting prspect - but we’d quickly find ut just hw far plastic has spread t every aspect f ur existence.
In hspitals, the lss f plastic wuld be devastating. “Imagine trying t run a dialysis (透析) unit with n plastic," says Sharn Gerge, senir lecturer in envirnmental sustainability and green technlgy at Keele University in the UK. Plastic is used in glves, tubing, bld bags, sample tubes and mre.
Sme everyday plastic items are als vital fr prtecting health. Face masks, including plastic-based surgical masks and respiratrs(人工呼吸器),as well as reusable clth masks, have helped slw the spread f the COVID-19 virus. “A mask that yu have fr COVID is related t ur safety and the safety f thers," says Gerge. “The impact f taking that away culd be lss f life if yu tk it away n a big scale."
Our fd system wuld als quickly cme apart. We use packaging t prtect fd frm damage in transit and preserve it lng enugh t reach supermarket shelves, as well as fr cmmunicatin and marketing. “ I cannt imagine hw plastic wuld be replaced cmpletely in ur system," says Eleni Iacvidu, a lecturer in envirnmental management at Brunel University Lndn.
Swapping ut plastic packaging wuld have knck-n(产生连锁反应的) envirnmental effects. While glass has sme advantages ver plastic, such as being endlessly recyclable, a ne-liter glass bttle can weigh as much as 800g cmpared t a 40g plastic ne. When thse heavier bttles and jars need t be transprted ver lng distances, carbn emissins grw even mre.
It’s clear that replacing ne material with anther wn’t slve all ur plastic prblems.

    B. Is plastic packaging bad fr the envirnment?
    C. Mre recycling wn’t slve plastic pllutin

Despite the bad reputatin f sharks, they are crucial t the health f the marine ecsystem and can even help fight climate change.
In the shallws f Shark Bay, Western Australia, seagrass is fd fr the sea cws, which can weigh as much as 500kg and eat rughly 40kg f seagrass a day. Sea cws are a rich surce f fd fr tiger sharks. By keeping the sea cw ppulatin cntrlled, tiger sharks here help the seagrass grw sustainably. A bming seagrass meadw stres twice as much CO₂ per square mile as frests typically d n land.
But tiger shark numbers are declining. Off Australia’s nrtheast cast f Queensland, tiger sharks are estimated t have fallen by at least 71 percent, largely due t verfishing. A reductin in tiger sharks means mre seagrass cnsumed by herbivres(食草动物) and less carbn stred in sea vegetatin. This raised the questin: What if they were absent frm the Shark Bay — wuld the seagrass-dminated ecsystem survive?
T find ut, researchers led by Rb Nwicki f Flrida Internatinal University, spent time in Eastern Australia, where shark numbers were lwer and sea cws ate seagrass largely undisturbed. "When uncntrlled, sea cws can rapidly destry wide areas f seagrass," said Nwicki.
Thse findings emphasized that tiger sharks were playing an imprtant rle in preventing the reductin f seagrass in Shark Bay. If their ppulatins cntinue t decline, the resilience f carbn-rich cean ecsystems will likely decrease.
When it cmes t stimulating shark numbers, there have been mvements tward mre sustainable fishing, but a large percentage f the industry have nt changed their methds, which is a reasn why the ppulatin f many marine tp predatrs(捕食者) cntinues t decline.
Aside frm supprting sustainable fishing, Nwicki said the nly way t truly prtect marine life is t reduce ur glbal greenhuse gas emissins. "Ultimately, if we are ging t prtect ur ecsystems in the centuries t cme, we are ging t need t slve climate change while undertaking species prtectin at the same time."
32.Why are tiger sharks vital t the marine ecsystem?
    A. They feed n varius sea animals.
    B. They can stre large amunts f CO₂.
    C. They can prevent the lss f seagrass.
    D. They influence marine species distributin.
33.What did Rb Nwicki’s team want t find ut in Eastern Australia?
    A. Hw sea cws destry the seagrass cmmunity.
    B. Hw shark ppulatin influences the cean ecsystem.
    C. What was cntributing t the declining number f tiger sharks.
    D. What t d t recver the seagrass - dminated ecsystem.
34.What is the main reasn fr the ppulatin reductin f many tp predatrs in marine ecsystems?
    A. Climate change. B. Water pllutin.
    C. Lss f seagrass. D. Unsustainable fishing appraches.
    35. What’s the main idea f the text?
    A. We shuld prtect ur envirnment.
    B. The number f tiger sharks is decreasing .
    C. Climate change causes the lss f seagrass.
    D. Tiger sharks are vital t the health f the marine ecsystem .
