“Have you finished your lesson, George?” said Mr. Prentice to his son, who had laid aside his book and was busy making a large paper kite.
“No, father,” replied George, hanging down his head.
    “Why not, my son?”
“Because it is so difficult, father. I am sure that I shall never learn it. Besides, I could not remember it after I had learned it, my memory is so bad.”
“If I promise you a holiday on the thirtieth of the month after next, do you think you would forget the date?”
“No, I am pretty sure that I should not.”
“You are very good at skating, and flying a kite, and playing a ball, aren’t you?” “Yes, father.”
“And yet you cannot learn your lesson! My dear boy, you are deceiving(欺骗)yourself. You can learn as well as anyone, if you will only try.”
“But have I not tried, father?” asked George.
“Well, try again. Come, for this afternoon lay aside that kite you are making, and give another effort to get your lesson ready. To show you that it only requires perseverance, I will tell you a story:
One of the dullest boys at a village school, more than thirty years ago, went up to repeat his lesson one morning, and, as usual, did not know it. “Go to your seat!” said the teacher angrily.
“If you don’t pay more attention to your lessons, you will never be fit for anything.” The poor boy went back to his seat.
“It is of no use. I cannot learn.” he said in a low voice to the boy who sat near him. “You must try hard,” replied the kind-hearted boy.
“I have tried, but it is of no use, I may just as well give up at once.” “Try again, Henry!”
The boy got courage from these two words. Soon, to his surprise and pleasure, the whole lesson was remembered!”
“And was it you, father?” asked his son, looking up into the face of his kind parent. “Yes, my child. That dull boy was your own father in his early years.”
“Then I will try again.” said George.
“I learned the lesson, father!” replied the boy, “I can say every word of it.” “Did you find it hard work?”
“Not so very hard, after I had once made up my mind that I would learn it.”
“May you never forget this lesson, my son!” said Mr. Prentice, “You now get the secret of success. It lies in never stopping to think about a task being difficult or tiresome, but in going on, with a fixed determination to succeed.”

Everybody has a brain, but not many people know how the brain works. Some people believe that the brain is like the hard disk of a computer. We use it to store files—pictures, language (words, texts, sounds) and so on. Others compare the brain to a huge cupboard with lots of shelves and boxes in it. We put information into these boxes and hope to find it again later.
The brain is not A computer disk, And it isn’t a cupboard. Look at the picture here. It looks a bit like weeds(杂草)in a garden, doesn’t it? The picture actually shows a child’s neocortex—a part of the brain that controls sight and hearing. You can guess what happens—more “weeds” grow as the child gets older. Scientists call these neuronal(神经元的)networks. The networks grow around our neurons. -What makes them grow? Learning! “Learning is brain change,” says Professor James Zull from Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio, USA.“Without learning, nothing changes in the brain. For every new word you learn in your English lesson, every problem you solve in maths, every new song you learn to sing, a neuronal network grows in your brain and the brain changes.”
The more neuronal networks we grow, the better we can think and the better we remember. You may wonder if there is anything you can do to make the networks in your brain grow better. Professor Zull says yes, there is. He says that brain change is strongest when a) you are interested in and like what you are learning, b) you are in control of what you learn and c) you get challenging tasks that make you think hard. Understanding a challenging task makes you feel good and develops your brain.
24.What’s the main idea of the first paragraph?
A.The brain—a fantastic computer. B.What people believe about the brain.
C.How to make your brain stronger. D.Our brain—a growing system.
25.What can we learn from the passage 2?
A.Learning makes our neuronal networks grow. B.Seeing a challenging task develops our brain.
C.We remember better when things are easy. D.There’s nothing we can do to make us smarter.
26.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.Interest is the best teacher B.Meeting life’s challenges
C.Never too late to learn D.Learning is brain change

People depend on plants. We use plants for food, cloth, shelter (住处), and even the air we breathe. Plants keep our air and water clean. Green plants give us oxygen (氧气). Oxygen is part of the air we breathe.
Plants are also part of the water cycle (循环). Most of the water that a plant takes in goes back into the air.
Plants give us lots of the food on the earth. Fruits, vegetables, and grains (谷物) come from plants. Without plants, we would not have bread, rice, carrots, apples, oranges, or bananas! Many people are growing plants to eat in their own gardens at home. Having your own garden helps the earth as well.
When you grow your own fruits and vegetables, you help cut down on pollution because big trucks don’t need to take your food to shops. You also help cut down on the amount of rubbish because you don’t need to use bags for packing your food. You can just pick it out of the ground or off a plant and put it into a basket!
Trees are an important plant resource (资源). Trees provide wood to build homes and furniture. Trees are used to make lots of things around your home and at your school. And trees provide fruits that are good for you. Without trees, the earth would be a very different place.
31.________ is part of the air we breathe.

    GAVAC
    PRODUCT INFORMATION:
The 2-in-l Gavac is a cordless(无线的), lightweight vacuum cleaner(真空吸尘器), it can be used as an upright(直立的) vacuum cleaner, or the bottom can easily be taken off and used as a hand-held cleaner for those difficult-to-reach places. It charges(充电) overnight and the battery(电池) lasts for up to 15 minutes.
    WHAT BUYERS SAY:
Don, Liverpool: This machine is quite useless. It takes all night to charge the battery. It works well for five minutes and then has less and less power until it finally stops after 10 minutes. It takes me three days to vacuum my house!
Marta, London: This expensive cleaner really makes me angry. I bought it because the ad says that it easily changes to a hand-held cleaner. It takes about a minute to take the bottom off and then 5 more to put it back again.
Owen, Cardiff: It’s quite lightweight, but only because it is made from bad, cheap materials(材料) that break quickly. Do not buy. Mine died after only one week. I brought it back to the store, but they refused to give my money back. They offered to give me a new one, but what if it breaks again?

A teacher stood on the top of a ladder truck. It was five stories (层) high. She held an egg that was attached (系) to several balloons and was about to drop it. The students below fixed their eyes on her and held their breath. Would the egg survive (幸存) he drop?
Welcome to Kelly Coombe’s science class at Marsh junior High in Chico, California. Coombe organized this activity to help students better understand the laws of physics. She divided the 34 students into 17 teams of two people each. Each team tried to think of an idea that would stop an egg from breaking when dropped from 50 feet (15.25 meters) high.
The students used different materials (材料) to protect the eggs. The most used materials included cotton balls, drinking straws (吸管), cardboard, socks and balloons.
Josh Addington and Bowen Jiang thought of a creative idea. They built a pyramid out of drinking straws and put the egg into a “capsule (胶囊)” on the top of the pyramid. Then they tied a helium-filled balloon (氢气球) to the top to keep it moving in the right direction, and put a water balloon at the bottom to allow the tower to lightly land on the ground.
“Our egg survived!” Jiang proudly told The Enterprise Record. But not all of the eggs were so lucky. As Coombe dropped the eggs, some of them fell like stones and broke on the ground. About half of the eggs survived.
Coombe said the project was “a great way for kids to get excited about science.”
54.What was the purpose of the egg-dropping activity?
    A.To design stronger houses.
B.To break lots of eggs at the same time.
C.To help students understand the laws of physics.
D.To protect an egg from breaking when dropped.
55.What did the students do before the activity?
A.Look for a strong egg to drop. B.Find a way to protect the egg.
C.Learn the laws of physics. D.They did other experiments with eggs at home.
56.Which of the following best describe the theme (主题) of the story?
A.A creative way to teach physics.
B.Kelly Coombe is a very creative teacher.
C.Students learned how to use different materials well.
D.Several eggs are more likely to survive being dropped than just one.

On my first round-the-world trip in 2006, I planned everything out before the trip. I knew where I was going, staying for how long, and how I would get there. And then half-way through I ditched the plan and went with the flow (随大流). Over the years, how I plan my travel has changed. Now, I’m a last-minute planner and seldom travel with any plan.
Traveling without a plan gives you great flexibility (灵活性). Since nothing is booked far before the trip, you can turn to something different when you change your mind or something better comes along. I changed my plans to meet a friend on an island in Thailand and stayed for a month. I wouldn’t have had that experience if I had kept to my plan.
However, most new travelers are the opposite — they over plan their trips. They make plans for every day, sometimes even for every hour. Two days here, three hours there. I understand why people do that. When time is short, you want to see as much as possible. You don’t want to waste a single second.
But in travel, less is more. Spending more time in one place allows you to get a better feel for the rhythm (节奏) of life. You can visit more relaxedly, see more than just the interesting places, and spend your time on the happy accidents of travel.
When I first made my travel plan, I tried to include everything in it. Then I realized it was hard to make it come true, and changed my plan. I came up with a list of just one or two things I want to see each day. It’s an important lesson to learn. I think the best trip plan is to work out the general path you want to take, book the first few nights of your trip, and let your travels begin from there. This way you are never locked into a certain place if your feelings change.
57.What does the underlined word “ditched” in Paragraph 1 mean?

59.What does the author suggest about traveling?
A.Working out a simple travel plan. B.Getting prepared for the unexpected things.
C.Avoiding booking before the trip. D.Setting a goal before making a travel plan.
60.What is the best title for the text?
A.Traveling: A Race Against The Clock B.Why It Is Great to Travel Without a Plan
C.Traveling: Play More, Pay Less D.Why I Enjoy Traveling Around

For most people, graduation is an exciting day. But my graduation day was not.
I remember that weekend two years ago. Family and friends had traveled from across the country to watch our class walk across that stage. But like everyone else in my graduating class, I had watched the economy(经济) turn from bad to worse in my fourth year of university. We graduates had degrees(学位), but very few job opportunities.
I knew my small university town couldn’t offer me any opportunities, so I drove to southern California to find work. But what I thought would take a week lasted for two weeks, and then four weeks, and I found myself in the same situation I was in before.
You know that feeling when you wake up and you are full of fear? Fear about something you can’t control. You hope that everything that has happened to you so far is just a bad dream.
So what did I do to stay calm? I wrote. Something about putting words on a page made everything seem a little clearer---a little brighter. Something about writing gave me hope. If you long for something, sometimes a little hope is all you need!
I turned my scary feelings into a children’s book---about a surprising hero who simply refused to give up on his dream.
Then one day, without a writing degree or connection with the writing world---just a lot of hard work---I was offered a publishing deal(出版协议) for my first book! After that, things slowly began to fall into place. I was offered a second book deal. Then, a few months later. I got an interview with a big company and got a good job.
It takes time, but just hold on---things can change when you don’t expect it.
61.The writer didn’t think her graduation day was exciting because ______.

A.Her writing degree. B.Her friends in the writing world.
C.Her hard work. D.Her good job interview skills.
65.What does the author try to teach us?
A.Try to get as much education as you can.
B.Don’t fear what the future will be like.
C.You might not get the job you want at first.
D.Life can change for the better if you just hold on.

According to the survey conducted last year, 68. 1 percent of Chinese primary and junior high school students have their own smartphones. To keep students from playing with their smartphones in class, some schools have already banned smartphones in school.
Lei Yanqin, a deputy(代表)of the National People's Congress(NPC, 全国人民代表大会)suggested that smartphones should be banned at schools nationwide. She said that listening to music and playing games in class not only make teachers worried, but also make it difficult for students to concentrate(集中注意力). She added that students might also show off their phones too much. Video game rating system(分级制度)
Over 200 million teenagers across China play online games like King of Glory(《王者荣耀》). With their computers and tablets, teenagers are able to play most online games produced in China and abroad. However, some games have violent(暴力的)or vulgar(粗俗的)content that might not be suitable for young people.

During the novel coronavirus(新冠病毒)outbreak(爆发)hospitals all over China have used smart technology to care for patients and make work easier for doctors. The outbreak will help smart healthcare develop faster in China.
    Robots lend a hand
Robots are being used to fight the virus. For example, medical workers at the Third People's Hospital of Shenzhen are using robots to do some medical tasks such as offering medical advice, sending medicines and cleaning wards(病房)and other areas. They can also check temperatures.

    Remote(远程的)healthcare services
It can be dangerous for medical workers and patients to come into contact with each other. But with remote medical services, doctors at different hospitals can share photos and videos to come up with the best treatment(疗法). China's three biggest telecom(电信)companies are providing hospitals across the country with 5G support. This allows them to transfer(传送)large amounts of data(数据)quickly.
For example, on Feb 27, doctors in the cities of Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou used 5G technology to treat a seriously ill 67 year-old patient in Wuhan. By diagnosing(诊断)patients remotely, doctors can protect both themselves and their patients.
    AI(人工智能)makes work more efficient(高效的)
AskBob is a platform(平台)developed by Ping An Smart Healthcare, it can provide users with information about the virus, help people do medical self-checks.

Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents' home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station(加油站)about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register(收银台), I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.
I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend's. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.
I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holiday meaningful.
Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon, I returned to my car and found that I'd left the lights on all day, and the battery(电池)was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership — a shop selling cars —was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.
"Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?"I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment, so when I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say "thank you", and it meant a lot, he said.
"Thank you"—two powerful words. They're easy to say and mean so much.

    A. he forgot to turn off the lights B. something went wrong with the lights
    C. the meeting lasted a whole day D. the quality of the battery was bad
