    A
    Indonesia
It's never too hard to throw your garbage in Indonesia. What Indonesians commonly do is put their trash in their personal garbage area which is usually located at the front of their houses, right at the side of the street. Put trash there, and the garbage collectors with their big garbage trucks will pick it up.
Things aren't quite different if you live in the apartment complex in Indonesia. Collect trash wrap it in a tight plastic bag if you wish, and then put it outside your room or in a special corner in your floor hallway.
    Germany
The country has a quite detailed way of sorting its waste — down to the color of the glass waste and the type of paper that can be put inside the garbage bin. There are some common public garbage bins available in the German apartment/housing area:
    1. Blue bin — for paper and cardboard. Greasy (油腻的) pizza box goes to the gray bin!
    2. Green and white bin — for glass, different bins for different glass colors, not available for Christmas ornaments and light bulbs!
    3. Yellow/orange bin — for plastic and metals.
    4. Brown bin — for biodegradable goods.
    5. Gray/black bin — everything else that can't be recycled such as used diaper, kitty litter, animal waste and ashes.
Some items don't belong in your apartment/housing area's public garbage bins. Items like used batteries, electronics, unused paints, light bulbs and appliances must be returned to special locations so they can be recycled. Other items such as clothes, shoes, oversized trash and furniture are advised to be sold or donated.
    South Korea
Here are the types of garbage bin provided in South Korea:
Food Waste, anything that could be eaten by animals
    Recyclable Waste
Oversized Waste, mostly electronics and furniture
General Waste, anything that doesn't belong to the other types.
It might sound much simpler but don't be too careless, because South Korea has a pretty strict rule and many exceptions about what items should be considered as what waste and so on.
For instance, because the food waste bin is reserved for anything that can be eaten by animals, eggshells, crustacean shells and bones are fairly prohibited from it. You are going to have to separate the bones from your meat waste, put the meat waste in the food waste bin and put the rest of the bones in the general waste bin.
    21. How do Indonesians usually deal with their trash?
    A. Pay someone to throw it,
    B. Throw it into a public garbage bin.
    C. Put it in a specific area to be collected.
    D. Wrap it in a plastic bag and throw it away.
    22. What will Germans do if they have to dispose of used light bulbs?
    A. Donate them to others. B. Put them in the black bin.
    C. Return them to special locations. D. Put them in the green and white bin.
    23. What kind of waste will be put into the general waste bin in South Korea?
    A. Eggshells. B. Chicken sandwiches.
    C. Cardboard. D. Second-hand furniture.
    B
A new device (设备) called Orion is helping those who are blind to see. It does this in a new way by helping them experience the world around them.
Jason Esterhuizen lost his eyesight after a car accident. He never thought he would be able to see light or movement again. But now with the movement of a switch (开关), his world suddenly grew brighter.
He says, “I still can’t put it into words. I mean from being able to see absolutely nothing, it’s completely black, to all of a sudden seeing little flickers (闪烁) of light move around.” It is not full or normal sight, but Esterhuizen can move about in the world around him.
The new technology uses several parts. One is a small device placed in the brain. The other parts are a video camera on sunglasses and a processing device that can be carried in a person’s clothes. When the user points the camera, a signal goes to the processor (处理器) and then back to the glasses. The glasses then are in wireless communication with the device in the brain. The information causes a pattern to develop in the part of the brain. The pattern helps users sense or see movement and shapes of light. And it all happens in seconds.
Esterhuizen is one of just two people in the U.S. testing this technology. He says that “I can tell someone moving across the room, walking past me or walking away from me, or it’s a light against the wall. It is just amazing to have some form of functional vision again.” He adds that now he can do everyday activities around his home that he once could not. It is easier to walk outside.
The researchers believe that one day this technology could help people who have lost their vision because of illnesses like diabetes. It may also help those with poor vision or who were born blind.
    24. Which of the following caused Esterhuizen to go blind ?
    A. An illness. B. A car accident.
    C. A brain damage. D. A genetic problem.
    25. What can we know about sunglasses of the new technology?
    A. They are put in the brain. B. They are carried in the user’s clothes.
    C. They are mainly used to protect a person’s eyes. D. They communicate wirelessly with a small device.
    26. What can we infer about Esterhuizen in paragraph 5?
    A. He fully regains his sight. B. He always do daily activities freely.
    C. He feels delighted to see the world again. D. He is the only one to test this technology.
    27. What is the main idea of the text?
    A. Orion makes homes brighter. B. Orion functions as normal eyes.
    C. A new equipment helps the blind see. D. A new technology happens in seconds.
    C
Cases of the omicron variant (变异,变种)of the coronavirus popped up in countries on opposite sides of the world on Sunday and many governments rushed to close their borders even as scientists cautioned that it’s not clear if the new variant is more alarming than other versions of the virus.
The variant was identified days ago by researchers in South Africa, and much is still not known about it, including whether it is more infectious, more likely to cause serious illness or more able to evade the protection of vaccines. But many countries rushed to act, reflecting anxiety about anything that could prolong(延长) the pandemic that has killed more than 5 million people.
Israel decided to bar entry to foreigners, and Morocco said it would stop all incoming flights for two weeks starting Monday. Scientists in several places — from Hong Kong to Europe to North America — have confirmed its presence. The Netherlands reported 13 omicron cases on Sunday, and both Canada and Australia each found two.
Dr. Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health in the United States, meanwhile, emphasized that there is no data yet that suggests the new variant causes more serious illness than previous COVID-19 variants. Collins, along with several experts, said that the news should make everyone redouble their efforts to use the tools the world already has, including vaccinations, booster shots and measures such as mask-wearing. “I know, America, you’re really tired about hearing those things, but the virus is not tired of us, ”Collins said.
As more omicron cases have been found in more countries such as Dutch, Canada, Australia, many countries are introducing travel bans or closing borders, though they go against the advice of the WHO. It has warned against any overreaction before the variant is thoroughly studied, noting that travel restrictions may play “a role in slightly reducing the spread of COVID-19 but place a heavy burden on lives and livelihoods. ”
Spain announced it won’t admit unvaccinated British visitors starting Dec. 1. David Hui, a respiratory medicine expert in Hong Kong, agreed with that strategy, saying the two people who tested positive for the omicron variant had received the Pfizer vaccine and exhibited very mild symptoms, such as a sore throat.
28.What is the meaning of the underlined word “evade” in Paragraph 2?
    A.cause B.engage in C.assist D.escape from
29.What did Dr. Francis Collins imply according to his view?
A.The new variant causes more serious illness than previous variants.
B.All the countries should close their borders.
C.Regular public health measures are effective against the variant.
D.Omicron is more alarming than other versions of the virus.
30.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Any reaction before the variant is thoroughly studied is essential.
B.Omicron has originated in South Africa.
C.Unvaccinated British visitors will be infected with the virus.
D.WHO is opposed to omicron-related travel bans.
31.Which might be the best title for this passage?
A.More Omicron Cases Emerge As the World Rushes to Learn More
B.All Countries Should Introduce Travel Bans
C.Vaccinations and Booster Shots Are of Little Use in Fighting Against Omicron
D.Omicron Has Already Made Americans Tired of the Disease
    D
Feeling extremely stressed by your to-do list can make you unhappy, but a new study suggests that more free time might not be the magic way most of us dream it could be.
The researchers analyzed data from 35,000 subjects about how Americans spend their free time. They found that people with more free time generally had higher levels of subjective happiness — but only up to a point. Compared to those with less time, people with up to two hours of free time a day generally felt better. However, people who had five or more hours of free time a day generally felt worse. So the free-time “sweet spot” might be two to three hours per day.
Part of finding this “sweet spot” is connected with how people spend their free time. In an online experiment, the subjects were asked to imagine having four to seven free hours per day and spending that time doing “productive” or “unproductive” activities. Most of them believed their well-being would suffer if they had a lot of free time during the day — but only if they used it unproductively. Though that experiment was based on the previous assumptions, which is one limitation, it agrees with other experiments showing that being in a state of flow (心流状态) can benefit people’s mental health.
Of course, for you, any activities that increase your happiness are “productive”. If watching soap opera in your free time makes you feel better, you should do that due to self-care. And some traditionally productive activities can be easy and fun. For example, walking and cooking can help burn stress and put people in a state of flow.
“In cases where people find themselves with large amounts of free time, such as retirement or unemployment,” Sharif said, “our results suggest they can benefit from spending their newfound time with purposes.”
    32. How much free time one day do people have that can generally make them feel better?
    A. About 60 minutes. B. About 90 minutes.
    C. From 120 to 180 minutes. D. From 180 to 210 minutes.
    33. What does the third paragraph mainly tell us?
    A. How being in a state of flow can benefit people’s mental health.
    B. How the researchers analyzed data from the 35,000 subjects.
    C. How “productive” activities are different from “unproductive” ones.
    D. How people make use of their free time influences their happiness.
    34. How can we understand the “productive” activities in paragraph 4?
    A. They must be fun and easy.
    B. They are mostly traditional ones.
    C. They depend on one’s own sense.
    D. They generally rely on one’s own physical condition.
    35. What did Sharif say to people who have a lot of free time?
    A. People should spend their time with aims.
    B. It is not easy for people to have newfound time.
    C. People can benefit from large amounts of free time.
    D. Retired and unemployed people can’t deal with free time well.

The house was flooded by the fresh aroma(香味)as Jack’s mom took the cookies out of the oven(烤箱). Jack stood by the kitchen table watching as his mouth watered for the fresh cookies. “You’ll get some cookies after dinner, Jack. You just have to wait till then,” Mom said before cleaning up the kitchen and leaving the room for the hotel where she worked as a clerk in the front desk.
It had been quite some time before Mom made cookies two months ago. She was always busy working, with little time to accompany her kids. Jack knew that the right thing to do would be listen to his mom, but he felt very attracted by the cookies. So when Mom left the kitchen and walked out of the door, he removed the cover from the cookie box and thought, “Mom won’t know if I just take one.” Then he took a deep breath, picked up a cookie and snacked on it, enjoying every last bit.
“Maybe if I take just one more, Mom won’t find out,” he said to himself as he took another one. “Does it matter if I eat one more? OK, just one more. Just one more,” he repeated to himself and took yet another cookie from the box. Then he simply could not stop eating, and kept taking cookies one after another from the box till only one cookie was left. As he realized what he had done, he gasped in panic. “What shall I tell my mom?” Jack stayed in his room, thinking about how to escape this situation.
Soon it was dark. Mom returned home to have dinner with him and his sister Mabel, who just came back from their neighbour’s home. As everyone finished their food, Mom went to fetch the cookies, but to her surprise, there was only one cookie left in the box! “Oh, my God! Where are the cookies?” she asked.

W: School gardening has become very popular recently, with parents and teachers saying its hands-on lessons can be used to teach many subjects. Finding the money to keep a school garden going can be tough. Some experts and teachers, however, are finding creative ways to make it work. Susan Hobart is a retired elementary school teacher. She manages the school’s large garden with 12 raised beds. She said that the gardens help calm the kids and give them a whole different perspective they wouldn’t have just sitting at desks. Toby Adams directs the New York Botanical Garden’s Edible Academy, where school children learn about growing food. He said that school gardens can teach lessons in health, science, social studies, and even arts classes. “For schools without space for even a small garden, turning to local botanical gardens and parks can sometimes be the answer,” Adams said. Ron Finley supports teaching city kids about seeds and growing. His non-profit Ron Finley Project aims to “change the culture around food”. Finley remembered being amazed as a boy when he witnessed how “a seed destroys itself to become food”. “Having a garden in a school is just as important as any other education,” Finley said. Finley used the term reverence, or honor or respect that is shown, when talking about gardening. “If kids respect soil, they’ll respect themselves and this planet... Gardening is not a hobby but a life skill. I see this as one of the most valuable lessons of humanity,” Finley said.

根据第四段“Collins, along with several experts, said that the news should make everyone redouble their efforts to use the tools the world already has, including vaccinations, booster shots and measures such as mask-wearing.(柯林斯和几位专家表示,这一消息应该让每个人都加倍努力使用世界上已经拥有的工具,包括疫苗接种、加强注射和戴口罩等措施)”可推知,常规公共卫生措施可有效预防这种变异。故选C。

C 33. D 34. C 35. A
根据第二段中的“Compared to those with less time, people with up to two hours of free time a day generally felt better. However, people who had five or more hours of free time a day generally felt worse. So the free-time ‘sweet spot’ might be two to three hours per day. (与时间较少的人相比,每天有两小时自由时间的人通常感觉更好。然而,每天有5个小时或更多空闲时间的人通常感觉更糟。所以空闲时间的‘最佳时间’可能是每天两到三个小时。)”可知每天拥有两到三个小时的空闲时间的人感觉更好。故选C。
    【33题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段中的“Part of finding this ‘sweet spot’ is connected with how people spend their free time。(找到这个‘最佳时间’有一部分与人们如何度过空闲时间有关。)”以及下文的实验结果“Most of them believed their well-being would suffer if they had a lot of free time during the day—but only if they used it unproductively. Though that experiment was based on the previous assumptions, which is one limitation, it agrees with other experiments showing that being in a state of flow (心流状态) can benefit people’s mental health.(他们中的大多数人认为,如果白天有很多空闲时间,他们的幸福感会受到影响——但只有在他们没有成效地利用空闲时间的情况下。虽然该实验是基于之前的假设,这是一个局限性,但它与其他实验一致,表明处于心流状态可以有利于人们的心理健康。)”可知此段主要阐述人们如何利用空闲时间会影响他们的幸福感。故选D。
    【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Of course, for you, any activities that increase your happiness are ‘productive’. If watching soap opera in your free time makes you feel better, you should do that due to self-care. And some traditionally productive activities can be easy and fun. For example, walking and cooking can help burn stress and put people in a state of flow.(当然,对你来说,任何能增加你幸福感的活动都是‘有成效的’。如果在你的空闲时间看肥皂剧让你感觉更好,你应该这样做,因为你要照顾自己。一些传统的富有成效的活动可以是简单和有趣的。例如,散步和做饭可以帮助缓解压力,让人们处于一种流动的状态。)”可知能让你感觉更好,有趣的,能够缓减压力的活动就是富有成效的,所以富有成效的活动取决于自己的感觉。故选C。
    【35题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“‘In cases where people find themselves with large amounts of free time, such as retirement or unemployment,’ Sharif said, ‘our results suggest they can benefit from spending their newfound time with purposes.’(‘在人们发现自己有大量自由时间的情况下,比如退休或失业,’Sharif说,‘我们的研究结果表明,他们可以从把新发现的时间花在有目的的事情上来获益。’)” 故选A。

根据上文“The traditional Chinese lunar calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms. Grain Rain, as the last term in spring, starts on April 20 and ends on May 4.(中国传统农历将一年分为24个节气。谷雨是春季的最后一个节气,从4月20日开始,到5月4日结束)”以及Grain Rain originates from the old saying, ‘Rain brings up the growth of hundreds of grains,’ which shows that this period of rainfall is extremely important for the growth of crops. The Grain Rain signals the end of cold weather and a rapid rise in temperature.
根据本段内容“Grain Rain falls between the end of spring and the beginning of summer, with infrequent cold air moving to the south and lingering cold air in the north. From the end of April to the beginning of May, the temperature rises much higher than it does in March. With dry soil, an unsteady atmosphere and heavy winds, wild winds and sandstorms become more frequent.(谷雨正发生在春末夏初,少见的冷空气南下,北方的冷空气徘徊。从四月底到五月初,气温的上升比三月要高得多。由于土壤干燥、大气不稳定和大风,狂风和沙尘暴变得更加频繁)”可知,该段讲述的是谷雨节气发生在四月末五月初,随着温度和气候变化,此时大风和沙尘暴天气会开始变得频繁。故A选项“沙尘暴发生”符合语境,故选A。
    【38题详解】
根据上文“There is an old custom in southern China that people drink tea on the day of Grain Rain. Spring tea during Grain Rain is rich in vitamins and amino acids,(在中国南方有一个古老的习俗,人们在谷雨这天喝茶。谷雨春茶富含维生素和氨基酸)”以及后文“It is also said that drinking tea on this day would prevent bad luck.(还有人说,在这一天喝茶可以辟邪)”可知,本段介绍谷雨节气喝茶的习俗,上文提到了谷雨春茶,后文则提到了喝茶的好处,且空处为一个非限制性定语从句,修饰上文Spring tea,说明喝茶的好处。故F选项“它可以帮助身体散热,对眼睛有好处”符合语境,故选F。
    【39题详解】
根据上文“People in northern China have the tradition to eat the vegetable toona sinensis during Grain Rain. An old Chinese saying goes ‘toona sinensis before the rain is as tender as silk’. The vegetable is nutritious and can help to strengthen the immune system.(中国北方有在谷雨期间吃香椿的传统。中国有句古话:‘雨前香椿嫩如丝’。这种蔬菜营养丰富,有助于增强免疫系统)”可知,本段内容主要介绍谷雨节气吃香椿的习俗,最后两句介绍了香椿这种蔬菜对人体的好处。故E选项“它对胃和皮肤也有好处”符合语境,故选E。
    【40题详解】
根据后文“The custom dates back more than 2,000 years ago, when people believed they owed a good harvest to the gods, who protected them from the stormy seas. People would worship the sea and stage sacrifice rites on the Grain Rain festival, praying for a bountiful harvest and a safe voyage for their loved ones.(这一习俗可以追溯到2000多年前,当时的人们认为,在波涛汹涌的大海中,上天保佑他们获得了好收成。在谷雨节这天,人们会祭祀大海,举行祭祀仪式,祈求丰收和亲人平安远航)”可知,本段内容介绍了庆祝谷雨节气的节日,且与海边渔民航海有关。故C选项“谷雨标志着渔民们一年的第一次航行的开始”符合语境,故选C。

    Possible Version
Hearing Mom’s words, Jack was nervous with his face pale. “It must have been Mabel. I saw her around the kitchen,” Jack lied, blaming his little sister. Hearing this, Mabel was shocked, with her mouth open and eyes widening. She denied, but Mom didn’t scold them and sent them to bed instead. The rest of the night Jack felt regretful for what he had done, tossing and turning in bed, and finally he decided to tell Mom the truth and say sorry to Mabel.
So Jack gathered the courage to go to Mom’s bedroom. “Sorry, Mom. I ate the cookies, not Mabel,” he hung his head in shame. Mom hugged him, saying in a gentle voice, “I had known all along, but I wanted you to have the courage to tell the truth.” Jack then realized that he shouldn’t give in to greed or blame his mistake on others. “I’m proud that you came to me with the truth,” appreciated Mom. Only then did Jack learn that being honest and responsible wasn’t that hard after all.
