“Are you ready for our walk?” Grandma asked the usual question every Friday evening.
“Of course, we are!" We shouted excitedly, ready to talk about the end of the week and fill Grandma in about our week.
Growing up, my sisters and I always knew Grandma had heart problems and couldn't do anything hard, but we did know she would do anything to spend more time with us. Whether it was wanders around the block or walks to the library, Grandma was there by our side.
When I was going into sixth grade, we were told that Grandma only had 2% heart function. Her heart wasn't benefiting her anymore, but she found out that there was a way to live longer: an IVAD.It is a heart pump (起搏器)that replaces the heart, basically, a battery instead of a heart and it's connected to a battery pack by a tube that conies out of the side. Grandma would become a robot with no heart! The Toledo Hospital, the only hospital near us that could do this surgery, offered to do it for Grandma. She, obviously, agreed.
The grey morning of the surgery was rough for our family, as we woke up bright and early to drive to the hospital. That car ride left me with worried thoughts racing through my mind: Will Grandma be okay? Will we ever take another walk around the block?
When we arrived at the hospital, we knew exactly where to go, as we'd been there many times before. After going through those familiar doors and up the stairs, my mom and I walked up to the nurses' desk and asked for Grandma.
“Oh, Mary?” A nurse answered. "She's one of the nicest patients we've had." Then she directed us to the waiting room and told us that only two of us were permitted to go into the ward (病房)at a time to say goodbye to Grandma before she went in for surgery.

Better to Give than to Receive
When a special occasion arrives, a gift often finds its way to a doorstep or an office desk. But once in a while, a present arrives at an unexpected moment as a reminder that someone is thinking about us.
Wanda Anderson remembers such a gift.
The rosebushes were finally in full bloom that day. Seeing roses always brings to mind Wanda's childhood memories. To this young girl, those flowers were a luxury. "We never had money to buy extra things, so even a tired rose was something to cherish," Wanda said.
Nowadays, to have a backyard filled with many different roses is pure enjoyment. Wanda especially loves the very first blooms. Her husband, Dale, devotedly tends the roses and knows this little fact about his wife. So, on this particular morning, he picked the very first flowers of spring, fresh from the garden, just for Wanda.
But as Dale came back, he was met by a neighbor who had dropped by. As the woman turned to go, Dale graciously (有风度地)handed the roses to her. Even though their visitor insisted she didn't want to take them, she was repeatedly assured that the flowers were hers to keep.
“I told her I was happy for her to keep them, but I really wasn't," Wanda said, recalling the emotions she was feeling right then. Seeing her very precious first blooms go out of the door filled her with regret.
Throughout the rest of the morning, Wanda argued with herself, knowing logically it was “better to give than to receive. Nevertheless, she wished she could have kept the roses for herself.
Later that day, the couple just arrived at the post office, where they were about to park the car.

On a rainy night in March 2013, my husband Reece went out to get a box that he had forgotten in his car. On his way back inside, he noticed a small shadow moving on the driveway. He walked towards it quietly, and found it was a small hedgehog(刺猬), all wet in the grass, eating mud. Reece quickly removed his jacket and picked it up. The hedgehog was very weak and unable to move about quickly. But he did not seem to be frightened; nor did he resist being scooped up (抱起).
Once he was inside, Reece called out to me, saying that he had something that would make my heart melt, and he was right! We named the hedgehog Alf, because, just like the TV show character of the‘'80s, he came out of nowhere. And, like Alf the alien, this little hedgehog was amazingly intelligent. Not only did he learn to eat his dinner and drink water from his bowls, but he also learnt to wait for us inside his little indoor cubby house and hop into his pet carrier whenever we took him out with us.
Alf knows us very well and recognizes both our voices. He does not roll into a ball or put his spines up. Every day he allows us to pat him. He loves playing with paper and towels and will bite and tug on the bed sheets if given a chance. Like all pets, Alf loves his treats, in particular small pieces of sugar-coated biscuits.
Unfortunately, in April 2014, I was in a car accident and had to spend two months in the hospital. And boy, did I miss Alf! Reece told me that Alf would search around the house for me, checking in places where I'd normally be, such as my desk, my favorite seat in front of the TV and even my side of the bed.

I used to hate running. It seemed too hard, and pushing outside my comfort zone was not something I was raised to do.
In fact, I wouldn't have become a runner if it weren't for my husband Charles. He had been a serious competitive runner for many years. But several years ago, he quitted running for some reason. After our marriage, he wouldn't stop talking about how much he missed it.
"So start running again, why don't you?" I was getting tired of hearing about it.
So he picked it up again, and after a year or so, I started to join him at the track. Just a few weeks later, Charles signed us both up for a five-kilometer race in my city. I hesitated about doing it. After all, it was too soon.
But on the race day, there I was. As soon as the gun went off, thousands of runners pushed forward.
The first kilometer was too tough for me.
"I don't think I'm going to make it." I was already breathing heavily and painfully aware of the group of runners pounding past me.
"No, you're doing great", said Charles. He was trying to encourage me, to get me focused on something other than my discomfort.
    "I can't," I said, in a weak voice.
He tried a different way to persuade me. "Just make it to that house and let's see how you feel." I had to continue, sweating all over.
After another minute I saw the three-kilometer mark. All I could think of was that I was dying and that my husband was torturing (折磨)me.
Miserable doesn't even begin to describe how I felt. And there was pain, so much pain that I was on the verge of breakdown.
"You'll be fine. You've got less than a kilometer to go," Charles shouted loudly.

Holly was confused as she opened the birthday present from her best friend. Susan — it was a twelve-by-eight inch dark blue carpet. Her “thanks” was hardly heard as Holly tried hard not to show her disappointment.
The next morning. I carried a kitchen rubbish bag outside only to find Susan’s carpet lying there. I immediately reached in and pulled it out of the rubbish can. After giving it a brushing. I brought it into the house and put it away.
Before Holly’s birthday, Susan had been a regular visitor in our home. But suddenly I realized that it had been nearly three weeks since we’d heard the mention of Susan’s name. I missed her warm smile very much.
“Susan invited us to go to her house after school tomorrow. “Holly said as soon as she arrived from school. From her voice I sensed she was pleased with the invitation.
We were traveling along the winding country road that led to her house the following day. On the way Susan talked nervously about her foster mom and the seventeen cats they had taken in and cared for.
When we came to a stop, Susan’s foster mom — who introduced herself as Glenda — gave us a warm welcome. Susan guided us through the house. She proudly showed us her room, which was only decorated with some shabby used furniture.
I followed Susan’s foster mom, Glenda, into the kitchen. After clearing a small area, Glenda poured us each a cup of black coffee with her trembling hand. Then she began to relax as we drank our coffee and chatted about her cats.
Her eyes shone as she showed her fondness for Susan. But her expression turned blue when she referred to the girl’s past In an instant, I came to respect this warmhearted woman who had opened her home to a younger girl and tied hard to make a difference in her life.

I was walking down the muddy road one day when my cell phone rang. A child's voice on the other end spoke to me softly, "Dad, please come hack soon. I miss you so much!” Unconsciously, I knew it was a wrong number once again. I don’t have a single daughter. I just have a six-year-old son. It is not unusual to receive this kind of calls nowadays, so I replied rudely, "You've dialed the wrong number!” and then hung up in anger.
During the following days, I got the same call now and then. It disturbed me, so I either rejected her or hung up right away rudely. I couldn’t help complaining about this, “What an impolite girl! How can she call me up over and over again?” How 1 wished the little girl would stop causing any trouble to me some day! Suddenly, the phone rang up again. It was from the same girl- It seemed that she would not give up until she got an answer.
She constantly called me up. Even if I did not give her an answer, she still dialed my number from time to time. Eventually I unwillingly answered the phone. 1 heard the weak voice of that little girl, “Dad, please come back now. I miss you so much! Mom told me this was not a wrong number. It is your cell phone number, right? Dad, I am in so much pain! Mom said you were too busy to take care of me. She is tired out from looking after me. Dad, I know you are busy. If you cannot come home, please kiss me again in the phone, OK?” The innocent request was difficult to reject. I made a loud kiss into the phone and heard a weak voice saying, “Thank you.... Dad, I am so... happy, so …happy

As a child, I clearly remembered watching the PBS cartoon character Arthur get glasses. The poor guy felt ashamed and was laughed at by other kids due to his glasses. So I was thankful that I had good eyesight.
However, when I entered the eighth grade, I could no longer see very clearly the writing on the blackboard. Luckily, I was usually seated in the front of the classroom, and my study was not affected. So I didn't turn to glasses.
During my first year in high school, my eyesight became poorer. My eyes were examined, and the doctor determined that my eyesight was quite bad. I would either have to wear glasses full time, or try contact lenses (隐形眼镜). Since I had watched the cartoon character Arthur before, I was afraid to be judged by others due to my glasses — it made me believe the glasses would affect a person’s beauty. And being a teenage girl, I cared much about my self-image. Besides, at that time, there were few students around me wearing glasses. So I chose to wear contact lenses. I felt they would not affect my appearance. On the contrary, they would make me more attractive. And after wearing contact lenses, my entire world was transformed. Trees actually had leaves. People around me showed clear expressions. I was overjoyed at my new-found sight and appearance, and I had more self-confidence.
But when my junior year came along, I began to have trouble with my eyes. Once in a while, the contact lenses would irritate (刺激) my eyes, almost to the point where the pain was unbearable. It would take me thirty minutes just to get the lenses in comfortably every day, which made me so upset. With time going by, the pain only got worse.
In spite of endless visits to the hospital, my doctor found nothing wrong with my eyes. He tried countless mediations to ease my pain, However, none of them worked, and there was nothing left to try.

On July 8, 2017, eight members of a family in total, were enjoying an evening together at the beach in Panhandle, Florida. As the sun sank lower on the horizon, the two boys Noah 11 and Stephen 8 swam into the waves without the grown-ups noticing. Soon they realized that the ocean had pulled them into the sea. After trying and failing to swim back, they started waving and screaming for help. But the lifeguards had been off duty for the evening.
The boys had been struggling for several minutes when Jacky and Tabatha, a couple from Georgia, heard them. They dived into the water and s0on reached the two brothers. But after a few minutes, they were all trapped in a rip current (离岸流),a powerful one that could sweep even the strongest swimmer out to sea! By then, some teenagers had heard the cry. One of the teens rushed into the water, grabbed Jacky. and pulled him back to shore. Meanwhile, Tabatha could feel herself being pulled farther out. She was already exhausted and beginning to feel desperate as she was trying to save both boys alone.
Onshore, Jacky was terrified. A man stopped. “What’s wrong?” asked Shaun, who was heading back to his car. “My wife is drowning!" Brittany said. Shaun immediately strode (大步跨) into the water. But several minutes later, a gaping 15 feet still lay between him and Tabatha and the boys. He knew that if he continued, he’d become another victim. He turned around to seek help.
It was about that time that Roberta, the boys’ mother, returned from the bathroom and looked around for her children. She was shocked to spot them floating much farther out than they were allowed to go. She fought the waves to get to her screaming sons and the stranger who was trying to save them, but she quickly discovered it was nearly impossible to make headway in any direction. Looking around, Roberta sighed with relief to see some more people coming to help.

On December 16, 2008, Randy Heiss was hiking in Patagonis, a town near the US-Mexico border when he noticed there was a red balloon. He walked towards it, and found the balloon’s string was attached to a piece of paper. “Dayami”, it read on one side, in a child’s writing. Heiss turned the paper over. It was a numbered list, all in Spanish.
Heiss suspected that a child had tried to send Santa Claus a Christmas wish list by balloon, something he used to do himself when he was a kid. Nobody had ever returned his letters, but he wondered whether he could find the girl who had sent this one. It would be difficult, but Heiss had a few clues. About 20 miles to the southwest, was the city of Nogales, Mexico. Based on the blowing wind, he was pretty sure that’s where it came from.
Heiss brought the note home to his wife, who is fluent in Spanish and helped him translate the list. They found that Dayami had asked for a doll, a dollhouse, clothes and art supplies. Heiss then posted about his search on Facebook, attaching photos, hoping some of his friends in Nogales might know the girl’s family, but with no success. Heiss worried that time was running out before Christmas. On December 19, 2008, he sent a private message to Radio XENY, a radio station in Nogales.
The next morning, Heiss got a message from Radio XENY: They had located Dayami, an eight-year-old girl whose parents were killed in a car accident. They would arrange a get-together with Dayami at the radio station. So they bought just about everything on Dayami’s list.

The last two people were Grandpa and me. Entering the room, I saw Grandma sitting on the bed with a blanket around her. I ran forward and gave her the biggest hug with tearful eyes. Grandma, holding me tightly in her arms, said, “I know there’s a chance I won’t make it, but I love you forever.” Grandpa patted Grandma on the back and comforted her, “Don’t worry, honey. We are all waiting for you here.” Grandma nodded with her usual smile. Then she was wheeled away, leaving us waiting and praying anxiously.
Finally, after the longest morning of my life, the doctor entered the waiting room, smiling. “Mary is out of surgery. You’re allowed to visit her as long as you’re quiet,” he said. Relief swept over my body and tears began trailing down my face. Thank goodness, I had Grandma back! Once we walked into the room, there lay Grandma, looking peaceful yet painful with so many tubes attached to her. I felt so shocked but so happy. Grandma would be okay. She was taking the first step to becoming better and going on another walk with us one day.

3.One evening, Reece set up a video call for me from my hospital bed. When the video phone was connected, I saw Reece holding Alf in his arms and Alf was staring at the phone screen. Alf seemed shocked when it saw me at the other end of video. It kept scratching the phone screen with its claws, which made me so excited that tears filled my eyes. At this moment, I knew she also missed me very much. How I wanted to run back to it and pat it. Then we could play with each other.
I cannot describe the feeling when I arrived home and saw his little face again. As Alf saw me again, it rubbed my trousers with its little face, and then grabbed my pants tightly with its claws as if I would disappear. When Reece saw us like this, he said he thought Alf had regarded me as his mother. I looked at him with great excitement and said," I also think of it as my own child." People can cultivate feelings with each other, while people and animals can also cultivate such affection. And then we would live happily with Alf.

4.I rounded a corner. Immediately I saw both sides of the street which was thick with people watching the race, all cheering the runners on. I willed(用意志力驱使)my legs to keep going. Then I looked up and saw the clock. The seconds ticking away gave me an incentive(动力). I knew that if I had actually finished this race I would have achieved something. So, I straightened up, and gathered up all my strength to dash for the finish line.
I had my arms held higher when I passed through the finish line. I succeeded. But I was too tired to say any word, only panting for breath. A volunteer put a medal around my neck. Charles raced to me and cried in excitement, “You did great! I'm so proud of you!” He patted my shoulder and helped me up. “That was amazing! I want to do another race. This running stuff is amazing!” I shouted, resting my head on my husband's shoulder. My lungs and my comfort zone both expanded.

5.As daylight began to fade, we offered our thanks for the visit and said goodbye. Holly sat quietly in the car on the way home, pressing her forehead against the window as if lost in thought. All the way we didn’t say even a single word. No sooner had we come to a stop in the driveway than she threw open the back door and flew straight to the side gate of our house. I followed her silently and my throat tightened as I observed my daughter standing by the rubbish can looking inside. Soon she puffed, paused for a second or two, and walked inside, seeming slightly anxious and irritated.
“Is this what you were looking for?” I asked her in a gentle voice as I drew out the carpet from the cupboard and placed it in front of her. She gazed at me with absolute surprise, which soon turned to wild joy. “Thanks. Thank you mom, but... “She nearly screamed out when I threw open my arms and hugged her tightly just as she did with the carpet. I could see tears shining in her crystal eyes, a drop or two splashing onto the dark blue carpet. Magically, what she once didn’t even want to refer to now turned out to be her precious birthday present.

Shortly after this, I became interested in who had been on the other end of my phone. When I called the number back, a woman answered, “Sorry, sir. I am really sorry to bother you. I did want to call to apologize.” From the woman, I learnt that the girl had bone cancer when she was born, and unfortunately her father died in an accident weeks ago. The little girl suffered from unbearable treatment every day. Feeling painful, she would cry for her dad who had always encouraged her, so her mother gave her a random number.
I couldn’t wait to ask the woman how her daughter was. The woman thought for a while, saying sadly, “She has gone. You must have kissed her on the phone, and she went with a smile as she tightly held the cell phone with which she could hear her voice...” On hearing this, I couldn’t keep back my sad feeling, tears streaming down my cheeks. I didn’t know what to say, so I slowly hang up my phone, praying for her happiness and health in heaven.

    7.Paragraph 1:
He suggested that I wear my glasses full-time. At last, I had no choice but to take his advice. The next day, with a pair of “ugly” glasses on my nose, I entered the classroom, lowering my head all the way. I could sense someone staring at me and whispering to each other about my glasses. “They must be laughing at me and feeling I am weird.” I said to myself. From that day on, I almost didn’t speak to anyone, just staying alone in the corner of the classroom. My life was darkened by the “ugly” glasses.
    Paragraph 2:
Later in my summer camp, I met a very outgoing girl who also wore glasses. . However, the glasses on her face never seemed to bother her. She was active and confident, never afraid to express herself. Soon we became good friends. One day I shared with her my story about the glasses. After listening to me attentively, she hugged me and said, “Guess what, dear, a pair of glasses never ruins a person’s life, but a lack of confidence does. Whether you wear glasses or not, as long as you love yourself and are full of confidence, your life will be greeted with sunshine.” I owe many thanks to the lovely “glasses” girl, who pulled me out of the darkness and brightened my life, making me a brave and confident girl.

    8.Paragraph 1:
When they tried in vain to rescue the brothers and Tabatha, a risky idea came to them. To keep themselves from losing their footing in the rip current, they began holding on to one another to form a human chain extending from the beach all the way out to the struggling boys and Tabatha. They stayed linked tightly and managed to ensure they were safe by making their feet firmly planted in the sand. However, that required more links — probably dozens of them. Shaun spotted other swimmers on the beach and shouted, “Don’t just stand there! Come and help.”
    Paragraph 2:
By then, more swimmers had also noticed the group in trouble and rushed to join the human chain. One by one, link by link, total strangers walked into the waves and grasped one another by the wrists, determined that no one would die on that beach. At last, they made it and Tabatha and the two brothers were saved! “Those people on the beach are angels on earth,” said Roberta, showing her appreciation. Whether it is the first person or the last person in the chain, they are all our heroes, who helped get our family out of trouble.

Santa knew what he had to do. He drove to the hospital and found out which room Sarah was in. Taking a deep breath, and forcing a smile on his face, he entered the room, saying "Ho, ho, ho! Santa!" Screamed Sarah weakly. Santa rushed to give her a warm hug and a Christmas gift. Now, Sarah," Santa said, "you have job to do, and that is to get well. I expect to see you at Mayfair Mall this time next year!" "Yes, Santa!" Sarah shouted, her eyes bright. Santa kissed her on the forehead and left.
    Paragraph 2:
One year later at Mayfair Mall, a little girl came up to sit on Santa's lap and said, "Hi, Santa! Remember me?" "Of course!" Santa answered(as he always does), smiling down at her. "You came to see me in the hospital last year!" Santa's jaw dropped. Tears immediately sprang into his eyes. "Sarah!" he shouted and hugged her tightly. He scarcely recognized her, for her hair was long and her cheeks was rosy-much difference from the girl he had visited a year before. He looked over and saw Sarah's grandmother smiling and wiping her eyes. That was the best Christmas ever for Santa Claus.

Then the Heisses drove for 45 minutes, crossing the border into Nogales. They arrived at the radio XENY offices with all the presents and finally met this excited little girl. She didn’t expect that the wish balloon really did work. What happened was beyond her wildest dream. She couldn’t believe somebody out there did care about her.
    Paragraph 2:

    【点睛】
续写内容详略得当,使用了固定短语和主从复合句。如:beyond one’s wildest dream, care about,be admitted to,owe … to...,pass on 等固定短语。She didn’t expect that the wish balloon really did work. She told him in an excited voice that she had been admitted to a famous university in Mexico and she owed a lot to Heisses.这两句话使用了that引导的宾语从句;What happened was beyond her wildest dream. 该句使用了what引导的主语从句;She also told him that she started a Santa Claus’s Helper Project to pass on the love she received ten years ago. 该句中后面使用了省略that的定语从句。高级短语和句式的应用提升了作文的档次。
