“Mayday! We got Mayday!”Frank Pisano screamed over the micro-phone to the air control tower at John Wayne Airport last June. One of the two engines on his 1975 Cessna had failed, and he was now on a collision course with one of the busiest highways in America-Interstate 405,just south ofLos Angeles-and there was no stopping it.
Driving south on the 405,near the airport’s runway, was John Meffert.A fire department captain,Meffert,47,was heading home from his shift. Then a low-flying plane caught his eye. After he took a second glance,a thought crossed his mind: ”This plane’s going to hit me,”Meffert told Fox8.
He was right. The plane knocked into the center highway, popped up a few feet, and then hit the front of Meffert’s SUV.It finally stopped after hitting the divider on the southbound side.Meffertpulled over.He was unhurt,so he turned his attention to the plane. He ran toward the smoke billowing from it--and then he saw Frank’s wife,Janan Pisano, pop her head up on the passenger side.
By the time Meffert reached the aircraft, part of the fuselage(机身)was on fire and Janan, who was covered in blood, was on the wing trying to pull her husband from the wreck.Meffert, afraid the plane would explode, guided her to safety behind it.At this point, traffic had come to a stop, and two nurses jumped out of their cars to help lead Janan farther away as Meffert ran back for the pilot.
“I’m going to get you out.”Meffert said as he positioned himself under the pilot’s arms and carefully lifted him from the seat.He dragged the pilot off the wing and carried him to the side of the freeway to safety, where they watched flames swallow the plane.
Remarkably,Meffert’s car was the only one hit by the plane.Had Meffert been a second or two faster,Frank told the Orange County Register, the left propeller(螺旋桨)would have torn the top off his SUV and killed him.
“I play all the what-ifs-going slower, going faster. It could have been in a very different situation,”Meffert told Fox8.”We just had a lot of angels.”
24.What was the reason for the accident?
A.The plane hit a SUV. B.Frank was not a good pilot.
C.One of the engines didn’t work. D.The plane landed at a wrong place.
25.What damage did the plane do to Meffert?
A.It hit part of Meffert’s car. B.It set Meffert’s car on fire.
C.It caused Meffert covered in blood. D.It threw Meffert into the air.
26.Why did Meffert manage to carry the pilot out of the plane?
A.Because he knew how to perform first aid.
B.Because the plane couldn’t fly any more.
C.Because he didn’t want to cause a traffic jam.
    D.Because the plane might explode.
27.How did Meffert feel about the outcome of the accident?
    A.Nervous. B.Lucky. C.Sad. D.Excited

    C
The definition of beauty changes constantly. And it goes in cycles, like the changing of the four seasons. Not so long ago,Chinese people saw fashion as something coming from the West.Afraid tomake “mistakes”,they looked to Europe and America to see which standards had been set.
But now,the Internet, technology and social media have created a flat world.Fashion can be accessed from anywhere.Go to a high-end Beijing shopping mall, for instance, and you’ll see shoppers holding Hermes bags and wearing Chanel while holding a string of Buddhist prayer beads in their hands.Combination is the future of fashion.
As a visual artist who grew up in this “new”China,I witnessed my generation’s material dreams become a reality.I use technology in my photography, and I believe technology can help artists present works in new and better ways and this is the future of visual art. After all,we live in a world where AI is so advanced that it can create art free from human input.
We may give AI creativity, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be creative in its own right.Artificial thinking as well as decision-making is rooted in the intelligence and experience of countless human minds. It has already created wonderful examples of painting and music.Yet,some critics question whether anything created this way can ever be considered as real art. This is because most people have a limited understanding of AI.They see it as unfathomable,or the mysterious stuff of science fiction.
But applying AI to visual art need not be high-tech.Even the simplest of photo processing appsowe their existence to the development of AI,and its applications will only widen in the near future.
However,I can’t predict what the future of visual art will look like.None of us can.The world changes too fast, and the possibilities of the future will far exceed(超过)anything we attempt to imagine today.
28.According to the author, what does“a flat world” probably refers to?
A.A world where our material dreams have become a reality
B.A world where wearing luxuries is a common phenomenon
C.A world where people are allowed access to global resources
D.A world where the definition of beauty keeps going in circles
29.Why does the author think AI can be creative in its own way?
A.Human beings have equipped AI with intelligence and skills.
B.AI has developed critical thinking from the very beginning.
C.AI technology is advancing very quickly around the world.
D.The thinking of AI is based on human wisdom and experience.
30.What does the underlined word “unfathomable” in Paragraph4mean?
    A.Complicated. B.Familiar. C.Definite. D.Predictable.
31.Which statement will the author probably agree with?
A.Standards of fashion are still set by westerners.
B.It is hard for us to define visual art in the future.
C.Visual art is a combination of art and high-tech.
D.The future of visual art depends on technology.

    D
Pet industry seems to resist gravity. With continual growth over the past 50 years,it shows no sign of slowing down. With people treating their pets more and more like a family member, the pet industry continues to see a rise in related products and services.
The pet industry in the USA reached a milestone in 2020,with total sales of $103.6 billion,a historic high, according to the American Pet Products Association State of the Industry Report, compared to sales of $48 billion in 2010.That is more than a 100%increase in just ten years in what you might consider to be a relatively boring industry.
The pet supplement industry has been growing rapidly as pet owners treat their cats like a member of the family, almost mirroring human behavior.Pay attention to what human trends for health as it might cross over to their pets.
And if you thought product innovation was limited to humans, you would be wrong. We are starting to see significant amounts of innovation in pet product research and development. For example: pet wipes.Pet wipes are essentially moist towelettes(湿纸巾)used on pets after going to the bathroom.Another relatively new pet product category is pet toothpaste.
The same trend goes in the high-end product as well.If it will make their pets happier, there’s a group of owners who will buy it.And that includes relatively expensive luxury products.A new brand of kitty litter(猫砂)changes color based on a cat’s urine pH levels and the company claims that the product helps cat owners detect illness in their cats.
It seems that anything humans need, pets need. So,perhaps it’s not surprising that pet insurance is on the rise. The global pet insurance market size was estimated at $3.8 billion in 2019 and is expected to reach $4.4 billion in 2020 according to Grand View Research.Even Lemonade, the AI-powered insurer recently launched its own pet insurance coverage.
32.What makes pet industry continue to develop?
A.Its resistance to gravity B.People’s growth of love for pets
C.The support of some organizations D.The fashionable products and services
33.In what way is the growth of pet industry reflected?
A.The diversity of pets B.The family members’ behavior
C.The amount of money spent on it D.Human’s needs for their own life
34.According to the passage, what are the trends of pet industry mainly about?
A.Pets’ health and wellbeing B.Pets’ appearance and beauty
C.Pets’ training and behavior D.Pets’ rescue and protection
35.Which of the following can be the best title?
A.What is the influence of pet industry?
B.Why do pet owners treat pets kindly?
C.Does a pet belong to family members?
D.How does pet industry continue growing?

    第二节(共5小题:每小题2.5分。满分12.5分)
    阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
More and more people enjoy listening to music while they work, believing that music helps boost creativity. But an international study conducted by English and Swedish researchers is challenging that viewpoint. 36
To come to their conclusions, researchers had participants complete verbal problems designed to inspire creativity while sitting in a quiet room. 37 They found that background musicsignificantly weakened the participants’ ability to complete tasks associated with verbal creativity. The research team also tested background noises such as those commonly heard in a library, but found that such noises had no impact on subjects’ creativity.
The tasks were simple word games. 38 Then, they were asked to find a single word that could be combined with the three to form a common phrase or word. The single word,in this case, would be “sun”(sunshine,sunflower,etc.).Participants completed the tasks either in a quiet room or while listening to different types of music.
“We found strong evidence of damaged performance when playing background music in comparison to quiet background conditions.”says Dr.McLatchie.Dr.McLatchie with his colleagues concludes that music disturbs the verbal working memory of the brain. 39 Also,as far as the library background noises have seemingly no effect, the researchers believe that was the case because library noises create a“steadystate” environment that doesn’t affect concentration.
“ 40 Instead, they demonstrate music, regardless of its types, consistently interrupts creative performance in problem solving,”the study reads.
A.And this in turn blocks creativity.
B.First, all participants spoke out three words of their favorite music.
C.Then again, they were tested while music was played in the background.
D.Prior to the task, the participants were not exposed to the music they would listen.
    E.For example,participants were given three words,such as dress,shine,and flower.
F.To conclude, the findings challenge the popular view that music encourages creativity.
G.Psychologists from several universities say their findings indicate music actually prevents creativity.

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Madison was doing her homework in the study when the door burst open.It was her mother,Leigh Williams, with a shocking and incredible story: ”A little boy fell into a septic tank(化粪池),and no one can reach him.”Then she made this request of her13-year-old daughter: ”Can you help?”
Madison and Leigh ran to a neighbor’s yard, where they found the boy’s anxious mother and other panic-stricken adults surrounding a septic tank opening that stuck out a few inches above the lawn.It was 11 inches across--slightly wider than a basketball--with a hatch(盖f)that had been moved unnoticed. The boy, aged only two,had slipped in and was drowning in four feet of sewage(污水)inside the eight-feet-deep tank.
The men and women-who minutes earlier had been enjoying a party in a nearby home when they heard the boy’s mother scream-were dropping a rope into the tank, hoping the child would grab hold so they could pull him out.
Madison quickly surveyed the situation. She was the only one who could fit through the small hole.Without hesitation, she got on her stomach next to the opening, placed her arms out in front of her,and told the adults,”Lower me in.”
Inside the tank,it was dark and smelly.Madison stuck her arms into the sewage. In the process, she jammed her left wrist against a hidden pole, injuring the muscles in her wrist and arm so severely that the hand was made useless.
Rather than tend to her injury,Madison skimmed the surface of the sewage, hoping to feel the boy.Minutes ticked by before she saw the vague outline of the boy’s foot.Madison shot her good hand out and grasped the foot tightly.“Pull me up!”she shouted to the others above.
    注意:

    How to Protect Our Eyesight
    Boys and girls,
As we know, eyes are the window of our mind. But nowadays, with the development of digital products and mounting loads of study, more and more students have the problem of short eyesight.
Actually,it’s possible for us to take measures.Firstly,we should kick some bad habits. For example, don’t read in the sun or dark light. Moreover,we need to have a balanced diet.Eating vegetables and fruits is as important as having meat and milk.Lastly, doing proper exercise regularly is also beneficial, especially those outdoor activities, which reduces the chance of becoming short-sighted.
Take action and follow the suggestions above.I firmly believe we may protect our eyes well.

    第二节(满分25分)
    One possible version:
As they were pulled to the surface, the boy’s left foot got stuck.“Lower me down!”shouted Madison. She had to swing the boy’s foot gently until it was free.It was hard work lifting the boy with one hand, especially for a teenage girl. But withall her strength, she made it.Ten minutes after Madison had entered the tank, she and the boy were lifted out.Everyone present breathed a sigh of relief. The boy’s mother kept saying“Thank you!Thank you!”with tears rolling down her cheeks.
But the boy was not out of trouble. He had been unable to take in oxygen for so long that he wasn’t breathing. He was placed on one side, and a man hit him hard on the back several times until the boy coughed up the water. It was only when Madison heard him crying that she knew he was all right. Then Madison was taken to the hospital to treat her injured wrist and arm.“It will take me longer to recover than the boy,but it is all worth it.”said Madison.

    Text 2
W: And what would you like to drink with your meal, young man?

W: All right. That’s one medium classic cheeseburger meal with a Coke.Your total is $8.50.
    Text 3
    M: What’s that book about,Sue?History?
W: I’m not really sure. It’s a book of poems, but I have to admit that I have no idea what most of them mean!
    Text 4
W: I give up!I’ll never work out this problem.I don’t know why I chose math as my major.
M: Take it easy.I think we should take a short break.Your brain could use the rest...
    Text 5
W: I was going to make a cake for the party tonight. But I just realized we have run out of eggs.Could you go to the supermarket and get some?
M: I don’t think we have enough time to make one.Let me just buy a cake from a shop.
    Text 6
    W: Next!
M: Can I have a pound of chicken and two pounds of pork, please?
W: Do you want a whole chicken, chicken wings,or some pieces without any bones in them?

    M: Is that right?
W: Yes.Can you see it here?I wanted to make purple, but I didn’t use quite enough blue.It turned out just kind of gray and boring.
M: Well,I think it turned out great anyway! This is part of the fun of painting -discovering what you can do with a little imagination, taking some risks, and trying to do new things.

W: Let me see those feet,Bobby.
M: Do you want me to take off both socks?
W: Yes,I’d like to compare your right and left foot.Ah,the right foot is pretty red,and it looks bigger than the left one.It also feels warmer.
    M: What does it mean,doctor?
W: Well,I don’t know for sure.It could be one of a couple of things.I’m going to send you up to the lab to get some blood tests.Check in to the lab on the third floor.I’m sending them some instructions.Come back down here as soon as it’s finished.M: OK.I need to use the restroom first. Can you tell me where that is?
W: Go downstairs to the first floor. It’s right next to the elevators.
    M: Thanks.
    Text 10
The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is an amusement park with rides and games located right on the edge of the Pacific Ocean.Santa Cruz has been known as a university town and a surfing community since at least 1960.Founded in 1907,it was the first theme park of its kind in California. The most famous ride is called the Giant Dipper,a fast ride made of wood that climbs to 70 feet in the air. Many newer rides have bright lights and modern sound effects, but ever since it was finished in 1924,the Giant Dipper has been the symbol of the park.Other popular attractions include a castle, water rides, and little cars that kids can drive on a special electric track. There is also a mini golf course, sports games, and a huge video game area that looks like a palace in the sky.Hot dogs, hamburgers, ice cream, and cakes of all shapes and sizes give the boardwalk a special feel all year round.Although the park is free to enter, the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk does charge for rides and nearby parking.
