Steph Clemence always intended to go to college. But life tends to throw barriers in the way. Her mother remarried several times. By the time she was a senior in high school, Steph had lived in 25 places. Her stepfather died in a car accident, leaving her mother to support three daughters on a modest income. Paying for college became out of the question.
One afternoon, Dorothy Clark, her English teacher, walked into the classroom, handing out a paper sheet titled “Mrs. Clark's Book List”, and said, “Some of you might not go on to higher education, but you can continue to learn." She created a list of 153 fiction and nonfiction books, covering science, history, economics, politics, and literature. It would, she believed, form the equivalent(等同)of two years at a liberal arts college.
So she began in 1970. Starting at the top, Steph would read every book in the order they appeared. Each of those books fueled her passion to learn more about the person, subject matter, or time in history. Unlike many people who open a book in bed before it's time to sleep, Steph prefers to read while sitting in a chair with a cup of coffee by her side. She doesn't race through a book, as she wants to savor the experience.
Now Steph is 70 and she never did get to college. But she has only four books left to read from the list. She expects to complete them sometime in 2023.
In Madame Curie, the author, Eve Curie, writes, “Each of us must work for his own improvement, and at the same time share a general responsibility for all humanity, our particular duty being to aid those to whom we think we can be most useful.” The way Steph sees it, Mrs. Clark felt it was her particular duty to help young students. Steph wishes she could thank Mrs. Clark and share with her how reading the works on her list has changed her life. “It was never just a list I got from some teacher in school. It's always been Mrs. Clark's Book List,” says Steph.
24.What prevented Steph going to college?
A.Her family's frequent move.
B.Her stepfather's death.
C.Her mother's remarriage.
D.Her family's financial conditions.
25.Why did Mrs. Clark create the book list?
A.To prepare students for college.
B.To encourage students to continue learning.
C.To serve as a reading task for students.
D.To share her favorite books with students.
26.What does Steph think of “Mrs. Clark's Book List”?
A.Informative.
B.Heavy going.
C.Humorous.
D.Mind-twisting.
27.What is the best title for the passage?
A.A good reading habit counts
B.An influential reading list makes a difference
C.An impressive English teacher does wonder
D.A wonderful university experience matters

A CHATBOT developed by tech company OpenAI can find and fix bugs in software just as well as standard machine learning approaches can and beats them when aided by follow-up questions. A number of tools exist that use artificial intelligence to check programming code to ensure there are no mistakes.
Dominik Sobania at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany, and his colleagues sought to see how well ChatGPT could do this compared with other AI-powered coding support tools. They first asked ChatGPT to answer questions taken from the QuixBug benchmark(基准)dataset, which is a series of small but challenging programming problems. For example, they gave the AI a small snippet(代码段)of code and asked:“Does this program have a bug? How do you fix it?” ChatGPT managed to correctly answer 19 out of 40 questions put to it-comparable with two other deep learning-based code fixing approaches, called CoCoNuT and Codex. That roughly 50 percent success rate was considered state-of-the-art for such tools before ChatGPT.
The researchers then utilized ChatGPT's conversational interface(界面)to ask follow-up questions that a user would pose if they tried to insert the corrected code into a programming tool. This approach highlighted where ChatGPT's solution was incorrect and meant that in 31 of the 40 questions, ChatGPT solved the issue. “That was really surprising, because we haven't seen it before,” says Sobania. “That's something new.” Sobania expects ChatGPT or similar systems to be adopted as an additional trouble shooting tool for programmers in the future.
This is a good idea, but human oversight is still needed, says Alan Woodward at the University of Surrey in the UK. “We don't want to rely totally on the AI as it is not errorless.”
28.How did Dominik and his workmates carry out the test about how well ChatGPT works?
A.By analyzing data.
C.By making a survey.
B.By making a comparison.
D.By referring to another study.
29.What does the underlined word “utilized” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Employed.
C.Introduced.
B.Borrowed.
D.Developed.
30.What can we know about ChatGPT according to the passage?
A.ChatGPT's solution about the highlighted approach was correct.
B.ChatGPT successfully answered 50 percent of the follow-up questions.
C.ChatGPT's splendid performance made the researchers surprised.
D.ChatGPT is a totally reliable tool for people around the world.
31.Which word best describes Alan Woodward's attitude towards the application of AI?
A.Approval.
C.Objective.
B.Subjective.
D.Indifferent.

By the year 2050, Earth's population is expected to reach nearly 10 billion people. With this growth comes a surprising demand for food resources. To find an effective way to deal with the global food safety crisis, Enter X, Alphabet Inc launched Project Mineral, which focuses on “computational agriculture”, a term to describe new technologies that will further increase understanding about the plant world.
Can a machine be taught to understand the plant world? After years of work, Project Mineral leader Elliot Grant and his team's latest prototype(原型)-a plant-scanning robot-will turn up at the Smithsonian's “Futures” exhibition later this year. The four-wheeled plant robot, about as tall as a shipping container and as wide as a car, uses different cameras and other technologies to monitor and find possible problems with plants.
As it rolls through the farmland, it can identify weeds, and measure the ripeness of fruits. The Mineral robot can become taller to take pictures of wheat plants, or widen to scan a broad bed of crops. What's more, when the robot meets with different situations out in the field, it can accurately identify specific crops, traits or diseases.
Mineral has partnered with a farmer in the Philippines who is helping the team study diseases in bananas. Images of diseased bananas will be used to teach the robot how to detect diseases.
The robot also takes pictures of flowers and then employs the machine learning model to count a plant's flowering speed, which is crucial to understand how a plant responds to its environment and predict the yields. Besides, the robot can measure all kinds of leaf sizes and detect greenness.
Though the robot has come a long way from its origin, it's still a prototype. Mineral stresses that they're constantly improving and working closely with experts in the agricultural field to understand plants further.
32.Which of the following is a characteristic of the Mineral robot?
A.It powers itself.
C.It looks like a ship.
B.It moves with legs.
D.It can adjust itself.
33.What is the function of the Mineral robot?
A.Growing plants on its own.
C.Detecting crop diseases.
B.Helping fight insects.
D.Removing bad fruits.
34.How does the Mineral robot predict crop yields?
A.By observing the ripeness of fruits.
B.By calculating how fast plants flower.
C.By analyzing the shape of plants' leaves.
D.By analyzing images of diseased plants.
35.What is the text mainly about?
A.An attempt in solving the population problems.
B.Improvement of a plant-scanning robot.
C.Project Mineral-a fight against food safety crisis.
D.Effective solutions to deal with crop diseases.

When Canadian couple Edith Lemay and Sebastien Pelletier first noticed that their daughter Mia was having visual problems, she was just three years old.
A few years after they first took her to see a specialist, Mia was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa(视网膜色素变性),a rare genetic disease that caused a loss or decline in vision over time. There's nothing they could really do, because there was currently no cure or effective treatment to slow down the progression of retinitis pigmentosa.
Once they came to terms with the news, the couple focused their attention on helping their child to build the skills that she'd need to lead her way through life. When Mia's specialist suggested that they should assist her with “visual memories”, Lemay realized that there was one truly incredible way that they could do just that for her.
“I thought, 'I'm not going to show her an elephant in a book. I'm going to take her to see a real elephant,'” she explains. “And I'm going to fill her visual memory with the best, most beautiful images I can.”
She and her husband soon began making plans to spend a year traveling around the globe with their kid. They thought there were great things to do at home, but there's nothing better than traveling where they could feast their eyes on the wonderful scenery.
After gathering up enough savings, they soon began their family journey with an in-depth itinerary(行程)that involved traveling to lots of places all over the world.
