There is no way they just drove into that water, thought Corion Evans. The 16-year-old was hanging out with friends in a parking area underneath a Moss Point, highway in July when a car with three teenage girls inside fell into the Pascagoula River. It came to rest some 20 feet from land, then sank. The driver, Evans would learn, had blindly followed wrong directions from her GPS.

It was around 2:30 a. m. by the time Evans and brothers Karon and Caleh Bradley got to the river’s edge. In the darkness, they could barely make out the girls clinging to the roof, the only part of the car still, barely, above water. But they could hear screaming.

Evans took off his shirt and shoes, put his phone down, and then dived into the water, a river he knew alligators (鳄鱼) called home. He helped the first girl he saw and, keeping her head above water, led her ashore.

Just then, a man called out. Police Officer Garry Mercer had arrived. He dived into the river to help another of the girls. But halfway back to shore she panicked and went underwater, pulling Mercer down with her. Evans jumped back into the water and helped them until they could stand. “If he hadn’t been there, who knows?” Mercer told the Washington Post.

There was still one girl in the water. Cora Watson, 19, could not swim. She was gulping water, struggling to stay afloat. And scared.

“I heard Watson screaming ‘Help! And I thought she was done,” Caleh told WLOX in Biloxi.

“I just knew my last breath was coming,” Watson said. “My mind said, You’re slowly losing yourself.” She began to go under. Then, a surprise. “Corion had grabbed me.”

All of them were taken to the hospital and released. They’re alive because Corion Evans risked his life to save them. They’re alive, says his mother, Marquita Evans, because Corion Evans broke his curfew (宵禁). But she’s not mad, she told the Post, “He had a good reason.”

Typical commercial white paints reflect only 80% to 90% of sunlight and fail to help buildings stay cool during the day. For the past six years, mechanical engineer Xiulin Ruan at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, and his colleagues sought to create whiter paints to cool buildings without the need of electricity. They explored more than 100 materials, narrowing them down to 10 and testing roughly 50 different combinations of each material.

The one that performed best is based on barium sulfate(硫酸钡), something used to whiten photo paper and makeup. It is highly reflective to solar wavelengths of light. The scientists made sure the paint had a high concentration of barium sulfate particles(颗粒) of many different sizes. The wavelength of light each particle scatters depends on its size, so a wide range of particle sizes helps the paint reflect more light from the sun.

Outdoor tests of the new paint revealed it was the coolest on record, keeping surfaces 19 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than their surrounding surfaces at night, and 8 degrees cooler than surroundings under strong noon sunlight. It even worked in the middle of winter — when the temperature was 43 degrees F, it still managed to lower temperatures by 18 degrees Fahrenheit.

The scientists estimate that if 1,000 square feet of roof were covered with this paint, it would provide a cooling power of 10 kilowatts, more powerful than the central air conditioners used by most houses. The scientists noted they could likely make the paint even whiter by increasing the particle concentration, although too high a concentration would make the paint easier to peel off. Ruan said, “ painting 0.5% to 1% of the Earth’s surface with their paint, for example by coating roofs, roads, unused land and so on, might even help stop global warming.” He added, “Barium sulfate is common and environmentally safe, and powders of it are roughly half the cost of those often used in commercial white paints.”

In the future, the researchers want to optimize and commercialize their paint for a wide range of applications, including buildings, automobiles and outdoor equipment. They would also like to develop colored versions.

William Osler, a doctor, once said, “The person who takes medicine must recover twice: once from the disease and once from the medicine.” It tells us medicine may have some side-effects. Therefore, many people in the west are turning to other treatments to replace some medicine. Acupuncture(针刺) is one of these treatments.

What is acupuncture? It is based on the idea that energy flows through the human body along 12 lines or meridians(经络). These meridians end up at organs in the body, and illness is the result of blockage of the energy flow to these organs. To remove the blockage(堵塞), an acupuncturist inserts very fine needles into the body at points along the meridians. This stimulates the flow of energy, and restores the patient’s health.

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese treatment, which has been practiced for around 3,000 years. It is used to treat a wide range of diseases, such as headaches, dental pain, back pain, high blood pressure, stress, depression, and anxiety.

Since acupuncture is known to be effective against pain, it is not surprising that many people have experimented with it. Martina Hingis, a famous tennis player, had a wrist injury cured through acupuncture. NBA legend Kobe Bryant also used it on his leg. It has been used widely in the German football league, including the national team. The Queen of England is also interested in it.

If you do decide to visit an acupuncturist, it is important that you should check they are qualified and registered to practice, for some people are allergic to it while being treated, although this is very uncommon.
