All about the FIFA World Cup: a thrilling festival of football

Get ready for the spectacular sporting event with our fact-packed tournament guide. On 20 November, the FIFA World Cup tournament kicks off in Qatar. Around five billion football fans around the world are expected to watch live on TV as the best men’s teams battle it out for football’s ultimate prize.

Who are some of the star players to watch?

From Son Hueng-min to Gareth Bale, there will be more top talent on show than ever in this tournament. It’s the first time teams can take a squad of 26 players, rather than the usual 23. Sadly, it’s likely to be the last World Cup for two of the greatest players in the game: Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. It’s a chance for some fresh talent to shine, however: look out for younger players such as England’s Jude Bellingham, Germany’s Jamal Musiala and Pedri for Spain.

Which teams will be at the World Cup?

Thirty-two teams will compete for the trophy. For the first time ever, Qatar will take part in the tournament. As hosts, they qualified automatically but the other 31 teams had to win a number of qualifying matches. The next World Cup in 2026 will be even bigger — forty-eight teams will be in competition.

Which teams are the favourites to win?

France are the current champions and one of the favourites to win again with a star-studded squad featuring strikers Kylian Mbappe and Karim Benzema. Other European teams hoping to do well include England, Germany, Portugal and Spain. Argentina, Brazil and Senegal are some of the strongest nations outside Europe. Wales are playing in their first World Cup since 1958, but Scotland and Northern Ireland did not qualify.

    How does the tournament work?

The 32 teams have been drawn into eight groups of four. The teams in each group play each other once in a mini-league, and the top two from each group progress to the knockout stage. Teams must win that game, then a quarter-final and a semi-final to reach the final on 18 December. As well as the World Cup trophy for the winning team, there are individual trophies for the best player (Golden Ball) and top scorer (Golden Boot). England’s Captain

Harry Kane won the Golden Boot in 2018.

What conditions will players face in this World Cup?

Since the first men’s World Cup in 1930, the tournament has been played in June and July. However, Qatar is so hot in the summer that the 2022 competition was moved to November and December, when it’s cooler. It’s still warm, though, and each of the eight stadiums has air-conditioning. It will take the equivalent of 100 bathtubs of water a day just to keep the pitches in the stadiums green.

As well as a brand-new city and airport, seven spectacular new stadiums were built for this World Cup. Look out for the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, which glows different colours at night; the Al Janoub Stadium, which is designed to look like the sails of a traditional Qatari boat; and a stadium built from 974 recycled shipping containers. When the whistle blows for the final in one month’s time at the Lusail Iconic Stadium, England’s Harry Kane is one of many team captains who are dreaming big. “We have to believe we can win it,” he said. “What’s the point of going to a World Cup and not believing that you can bring the trophy home?”

    21. Who is likely not to attend the next World Cup in 2026?

     A. Lionel Messi. B. Gareth Bale. C. Son Hueng-min. D. Karim Benzema.

    22. Which of the following is CORRECT according to the passage?

     A. 48 teams are in Qatar World Cup competition.

     B. Golden Boot will be awarded to the best player.

     C. Qatar has to win a number of qualifying matches to be qualified.

     D. Two football teams in the UK participate in the 2022 World Cup.

    23. Which are the facilities in this World Cup?

     A. A brand-new airport.

     B. 100 bathtubs for players.

     C. A traditional Qatari boat for visitors.

     D. Eight stadiums without air-conditioning.

    B

An elderly couple in the UK claimed that they were held hostage(人质) by a pair of seagulls nesting on the roof of their home. Every time they tried to leave, the birds would become aggressive and attack them.

One time, when Roy Pickard, the 71-year-old husband, decided to take his chances and go outside, he was hit so hard on the back of the head that he had to be taken to the hospital for help. Local authorities have installed a gazebo(露台) outside the couple’s home, which should offer some protection. That’s the best they can do for now.

“The whole thing has been terrible,” Roy told reporters. “I’ve not been able to go out of the front door. If I try to get out of the door, the two adult birds are right there, and I’ve got no chance. It’s really frightening. My wife isn’t well at the moment, so we’re relying on me to get out.” Luckily, the Pickards’ garage is connected to their house and he can get out through there when he needs to do some shopping, but he doesn’t dare to get out of the car to close the garage door, so he always leaves it open until he comes back.

Roy has complained about the situation to both the local authorities and animal organizations like the RSPCA and RSPB, but their solutions have not been very helpful. The Wyer Council says that seagulls are protected while nesting, so all they can do is try to make the couple’s life bearable by installing a gazebo and making arrangements so that the 77-year-old wife, Brenda, can reach her private appointments safely. Unfortunately, animal organizations wouldn’t help the Pickards either. For now, all they can do is wait for the chicks to fly away. “The RSPCA and RSPB have been no help whatever. They seem to put the rights of these birds above those of people, which is ridiculous.” Roy said.

    24. What is the problem facing the Pickards?

     A. The door of their garage can’t be closed.

     B. They can’t walk out because of the seagulls.

     C. Their pet birds often attack them aggressively.

     D. A flock of birds nested on the roof of their house.

    25. What did local authorities do to help the couple?

     A. They told them to wait until the birds fly away.

     B. They built a gazebo to provide some protection.

     C. They sent people to guard them outside the home.

     D. They made arrangements for them to have appointments.

    26. What can we know about the Wyer Council according to the text?

     A. It wants to protect the seagulls.

     B. It is looking for an ideal solution.

     C. It will help Roy do some shopping.

     D. It hopes the couple can lead a simple life.

    27. What does Roy imply in the last paragraph?

     A. The RSPCA and RSPB are useless.

     B. Birds are more valuable than humans.

     C. It is ridiculous for birds to attack humans.

     D. He is disappointed with the authorities’ actions.

    C

Waking up very early might sound exhausting to late risers, but can a night owl become an early bird? It is possible to make the switch, but it’s not easy, said Michelle Drerup, director of behavioral sleep medicine at the Cleveland Clinic. “A true night owl doesn’t really feel great early in the morning when they wake up, especially when they’re starting to change this.”

A person’s tendency to be a night owl, early bird or some place in between is known as their chronotype. Depending on their chronotype, people are likely to be more awake and alert during certain times of the day and sleepier during others. Chronotype is determined by a combination of nature and nurture(养育), scientists have found. On the nature side, a number of genes are known to play roles in determining whether a person prefers to be awake late at night or early in the morning.

Environment also plays a large role. People tend to participate in daily activities that reinforce their chronotype, Drerup said. For example, night owls feel more productive and alert at night, so they tend to exercise and socialize in the evening. These activities are stimulating and reinforce the person’s tendency to stay up late.

The environment being an important factor, it is possible to change your sleep-wake cycle. If you want to wake up earlier, make the change gradually. Drerup recommended slowly shifting your wake-up alarm earlier by 15 to 20 minutes every few days over the course of several weeks until you’re adjusted to your ideal schedule. Consistency is the key.

Limit exposure to light in the hour before bed, such as by staying away from screens, Drerup said. Light blocks the body’s production of melatonin, a hormone(激素) that regulates our circadian rhythm(昼夜节律). And in the morning, try to get exposure to light as soon as you wake up, to end melatonin production. Avoid stimulating activities late in the evening. Instead of exercising at night, try working out in the morning or afternoon. You may also need to shift your meal times to earlier in the day.

If being a night owl works for you, there is actually no reason to change your sleep schedule. But staying up late becomes a problem when you must wake up early for work and school. It can also increase your risk of developing health problems.

    28. What can we learn about night owls?

     A. They feel bad while trying to make a switch.

     B. Their sleeping habit is fixed and can’t be changed.

     C. They tend to be more awake and alert than early birds.

     D. Their habit of sleeping late can be worsened by many activities.

    29. What is the word “chronotype” used to describe?

     A. A person’s sleeping patterns.

     B. A person’s behavior during sleep.

     C. A person’s tendency to stay active.

     D. A person’s ability to adapt to something.

    30. What can help change a night owl into an early bird according to the text?

     a. Stop doing exercise at night.

     b. Set the alarm clock earlier sometimes.

     c. Stay away from screens before going to bed.

     d. Avoid activities that make them excited at night.

     A. abc  B. abd  C. acd  D. bcd

    31. What is the text mainly about?

     A. The risks of sleeping late.

     B. How to lead a healthy life.

     C. The benefits of becoming an early bird.

     D. How to change the sleep schedule of night owls.

    D

New research suggests that your cat is likely to be using sounds to keep track of where you are even when you’re out of sight. Domesticated(驯养的) cats create “mental maps” that track where their owner is located based on the direction of certain sounds, which is an ability that was previously unknown in cats.

Study author Saho Takagi, a doctoral student at Kyoto University, says she has long been interested in cats’ hearing and their ability to move their ears in different directions. “I saw a cat with only one of its ears tilted(倾斜) back listening to the sound behind it, and felt that cats must be thinking about many things from the sound,” Takagi said. “This time, I tried to find out whether they map their owner’s position from sounds.”

The team conducted a series of experiments to find out if cats actively track their owner using signals like sounds. They played recordings of human voices calling a cat’s name from different locations. For example, a nearby speaker would announce, “Fluffy!”, suggesting to the kitty that the owner was close, and then a speaker in a different room would play the same message again. The cats appeared surprised by the voice coming from an unexpected location, suggesting that domesticated cats map the position of their human companions using audio signals, even when they’re in the next room.

Earlier studies have shown that cats can tell familiar and unfamiliar human voices apart, and locate hidden objects. Therefore, “it seems plausible that cats should be able to mentally map others’ locations based on sounds,” the researchers explain.

Cats aren’t the only animals that can keep track of something that is out of sight, which is an ability called object permanence. Human children usually start to develop the skill around eight months old, and previous research has also found object permanence in other animals. “It is generally believed that cats are not as interested in their owner as dogs are, but it turns out that they were mentally representing the invisible presence of their owner,” Takagi told CNN.

    32. Why did Saho Takagi do this research with her team members?

     A. To analyze how sounds affect cats’ hearing.

     B. To satisfy her curiosity about the hearing ability of cats.

     C. To study how cats keep track of their owners in big rooms.

     D. To observe whether cats could find their owners by sound.

    33. How did the team do the experiments?

     A. They let owners in different rooms shout their cats’ names out loud.

     B. They put speakers in a few locations and asked the cats to find them.

     C. They played recordings of cat owners’ voices in different locations.

     D. They played recordings of all kinds of human voices at the same time.

    34. What does the underlined word “plausible” probably mean in the fourth paragraph?

     A. Doubtful.  B. Surprising.  C. Reasonable.  D. Unbelievable.

    35. What can be inferred from the text?

     A. Dogs can give more love to their owners than cats.

     B. Cats probably imagine the location of their owners in their minds.

     C. Except for humans, object permanence has only been found in cats.

     D. Previous research has got similar conclusions about cats to those of Takagi’s.

Online debates, conducted on virtual platforms on the Internet, have somehow taken over in being beneficial, as compared to real life debates, for many reasons. For example, they favor more in-depth analysis — This one is especially for the main participants in the debate. They put forward their views from a place where they’re comfortably seated.          36          That is why online debaters can comprehend and think their competitors’ arguments while they write down their own points of view.

37          You don’t need to find a place or arrange for the audience to be seated. The experts and opinion formers don’t need to take an entire day out from their busy schedules to come to the venue and speak.          38

Online debates leave a lasting impression. The debates and the comments on them are archived(存档) by the debate website and anyone who wants to get back to the discussion can do so at any time.          39          This is because it can all be seen again on the website, including every word, every argument.

Also, if there are some developments on the issue, then a comment on the issue will tell all the participants to get back to the debate.          40          It’s like keeping the doors open to people who want to learn more and share.

    A. Online debates are much quicker to organize.

    B. The ability to comment allows people to share their views.

    C. There is no chance of a point discussed slipping from the mind.

    D. In other words, the good topics for a debate will never be out of date.

    E. On an online debating platform, a citizen shares the space with leading thinkers.

    F. Besides, they have time and means to explore further before sharing their thoughts.

    G. All that’s needed is a topic and experts who can take out time to write some words on the topic.

It had been a year since Susan, an attractive young woman of 34 became blind and she was suddenly thrown into a world of darkness, anger, frustration and self-pity. And all she had to cling to was her husband, Mark.

Mark, an Air Force officer, loved Susan with all his heart and he was determined to help his wife gain the strength and confidence she needed to become independent again. Finally, Susan felt ready to return to her job, but how would she get there? Mark volunteered to drive her to work each day, even though they worked at opposite ends of the city.

At first, this comforted Susan. Soon, however, Mark decided that Susan had to start taking the bus again on her own. But she was still so fragile, so angry — how would she react?

Just as he predicted, Susan was horrified at the idea of taking the bus again. “How am I supposed to know where I am going? I feel like you’re abandoning me.” she responded bitterly.

Mark’s heart broke to hear these words, but he knew what had to be done. He promised Susan that he would ride the bus with her, for as long as it took, until she got the hang of it.

For two solid weeks, Mark, in military uniform, accompanied Susan to and from work each day. He taught her everything to adapt to her new environment, including befriending the bus drivers who could watch out for her, and save her a seat.

Finally, Susan decided to try the trip on her own. Monday morning arrived, she said goodbye to Mark, and for the first time, they went their separate ways.

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday... Each day on her own went perfectly, and Susan had never felt better. She was doing it!

On Friday morning, as she was paying the fare to get off the bus as usual, the driver said, “Young lady, I sure do envy you.” Surprised and curious, she asked the driver, “Why do you say that you envy me?”

    注意:

    To whom it may concern,

I am Li Hua. I am writing to complain about one of your bus-drivers’ improper and rude behaviors. (表明写信目的)

Last Sunday, I was taking the No.11 bus whose driver not only kept on talking with a man loudly but also drove very fast. (高分句型一) So some passengers advised him to concentrate on driving ,but he didn’t pay any attention. What’s worse, he drove even faster. Then another passenger couldn’t bear it, asking the driver to keep the passengers’ safety in mind. (高分句型二) But the driver stopped the bus so suddenly that all the passengers nearly lost their balance . However, he didn’t apologize but said rudely “It’s none of your business.” (举例证明)

I sincerely hope you can investigate this incident and proper measures should be taken to prevent such an incident happening again. (高分句型三) (提出要求)

    Sincerely yours,
    Daniel

    第二节

The driver responded, “It must feel good to be taken care of and protected like you are every day.” Confused by what the driver talked about, she asked, “what do you mean?” The driver answered, “Every morning in the past week, a fine-looking gentleman in a military uniform has been standing across the street watching you get off the bus. He makes sure you cross the street safely and he watches until you enter your office building. Then he blows you a kiss, gives you a little salute and walks away. You are one lucky lady.”

With tears of happiness in her eyes, she stood motionlessly facing the opposite side of the street, as if staring at someone. Although she couldn’t physically see him, she definitely felt Mark’s presence. Susan thought she was actually lucky, for he had given her a gift more powerful than sight, a gift of love that can bring light where there is
darkness. Just as Mark grew a little worried, he saw his wife break into a radiant smile and blow a kiss to his direction.
Finally, she found back herself — blind but attractive and confident as she used to be.
