Thus she can practice medicine and participate in research. Her passion for research started from her second year in college, when Dr. Phillips, professor of chemistry, asked her to join his research team. She enjoyed it so much that when that first project ended, she joined Dr. Dahl, another distinguished professor, in his chemistry lab. As a student researcher, Metko has presented their research at a national conference and is working with Dahl on an academic paper for publication.Last summer, Metko worked in Mayo Clinic, where she watched doctors and researchers cooperate to develop the best diagnostic tools and treatment plans for patients. Her experience here ensured her of her future career path. “Before going to Mayo Clinic, this was just a career I had read about,” Metko says of physician-researchers. “I’d met medical doctors and Ph.D.s, but never someone who was both. Here were living examples of such people, who cured patients and spent time in their lab advancing the field, doing exactly what I want to do.”Bright as her future is, Metko's overcome many challenges like endless health issues, but with a positive attitude to life, she’s actively received treatment and got through. “With a major in biology and two minors in chemistry and pre-professional health sciences, all the courses taken at UWEC have given me a solid foundation to pursue graduate studies and earn my M.D.-Ph.D, ” Metko says.24. What contributed to Metko’s idea to pursue a medical career at first?A. Her father’s sufferings from diseases. B. Her poor living conditions in childhood.C. Raised 25 feet above the ground, this large metal structure once supported a rail line. The line opened in 1934 to bring trains directly into factories. It was hardly used after the 1960s, and much of it was torn down. However, one part remained in a region of Manhattan called Chelsea. Chelsea was becoming high-class as restaurants, art galleries and apartments were built, but the ugly railway structure remained as a dead weight. Everyone knew that at some time, it would have to be removed. But the High Line was not destroyed. In fact, now the old rail line serves as one of the most peaceful places in the city. It holds an incredible park, with beautiful gardens and great views of the city. The idea to turn the rail line into a park came from Joshua David and Robert Hammond. In 1999, they attended a meeting to decide how to deal with the High Line. David and Hammond were the only people at the meeting interested in saving the historical structure. Later on, when they asked railway officials to take them up to look at the High Line, they saw a mile and a hall of wild flowers growing in the middle of the city, and they realized that the High Line had potential to become a park. There was growing interest in improving city centers, and so the project quickly developed and money for construction was easily collected. The first part of the High Line opened in 2009 and immediately became popular with tourists and locals alike. Each part of the park has a different atmosphere. Some areas are like balconies (阳台) with wonderful city views. Where the rail line goes between buildings, trees are thickly planted. Other sections have wide lawns (草坪) and walkways with wild flowers. Only the final section remains the way it has been for the last fifty years. 28. What does the underlined part “a dead weight” in paragraph 1 mean? A. Something with historical interest.   B. Something with potential to be better. C. Something which is a danger to people.  D. Something useless which slows progress.29. Why did David and Hammond originally want to save the High Line? A. They wanted to reopen the train line. B. They thought it had historical value. C. They were interested in improving the city. D. They thought it would become a good park. 30. What can we learn about the High Line from the text? A. Only part of the line remains.    B. The railway companies still use the line. C. It began to become popular in the 1960.  D. It was designed by David and Hammond.31. What is the text mainly about? A. Closing a train line.              B. An unlikely place for a park. C. Protection of cultural relics.          D. Improving city transport. D(改编)Have you ever fought with a problem? Picked up a new skill? Encountered a difficult concept? These sentences all talk about learning and all contain phrases that refer to parts of the body outside the brain. Perhaps that’s because these phrases suggest something deeper. Researchers made a new discovery that learning is easier, quicker and more long-lasting if it involves the body.“In the past, people have argued that as we grow, we become more able to think abstractly (抽象地),” says Andrew Manches, a psychologist at the University of Edinburgh in the UK. Traditional thinking might suggest that teachers should help prevent children from using body gestures to prepare them for the adult world. But in truth, the physical world never really leaves our thinking. For example, when we process verbs such as “lick”, “kick” and “pick”, medical scanners show that the parts of our brain that control the muscles in our face, legs and hands, respectively, light up with activity.Science is beginning to back up the idea that actions really might speak louder than words in the classroom. Spencer Kelly, a psychologist at Colgate University in New York, has found that people spend three times as much time gesturing, when they think the message they are conveying(传递) is remarkably important, suggesting that even if only at the subconscious (潜意识的) level, we appreciate the communicative value of our body language. Kelly has also found evidence that a teacher is more appealing to students when he or she uses arm and hand movements to stress points. Also, some studies indicate that young children obtain more if their teacher uses gestures when explaining a concept. Meanwhile, Sunsan Wagner Cook, a psychologist at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, has found that children pick up new concepts more effectively, if they are taught to mirror and repeat gestures their teacher uses.32. How did people in the past understand learning?A. The older a student grows, the less likely he will think abstractly.B. Teachers are advised to encourage students to use body gestures.C. Body gestures should be removed to promote adult-like thinking.D. The physical world never really leaves our thinking.33. How did the author make us believe the new discovery?A. By presenting different researches.     B. By explaining some rules.C. By making some predictions.         D. By analyzing related theories.34. What can we learn from Spencer Kelly’s study?A. Body movements can increase a teacher’s popularity.B. Young students like to mirror their teacher’s gestures.C. People use gestures every time they convey messages.D. Gestures are three times more powerful than spoken language.35. What is the best title of the text?A. The Language of Learning: A Vital Approach.  B. Body Language: A Universal Language Signal.  C. Body Gestures: A Sharp Tool for Fast Learning.D. Thinking Abstractly: A Symbol of Adult World. (改编)Nature changes from one season to the next, and soon the winter months roll around. There was my son, ready to start the day. I also heard my babies awake in the next room. Ready or not the day had begun!I loved being home with my little ones, but I felt the weight of the world on my shoulders. My husband and I had just bought a house, and some unexpected expenses made our budget tighter than it had ever been. I was cautious of spending more pennies. We weren't foolish with our money. We worked hard. We were doing all the right things, but we had had one financial disappointment after another.I was going to pick up my kids’ photos from the studio at the local mall. Despite our small budget, it was important for me to have pictures of my children as they were growing up. The previous week, I had found a coupon(优惠券) and used some change from the car to buy a $7.99 portrait(肖像) package, and today was the day I was to pick up the portraits. Since we were going to the mall, I decided to make it an outing and packed some sandwiches for us to eat at the food court. What's more, there are many ride-on toy cars in the mall’s food court for fun and for free. After breakfast, we went off. After we parked, we walked into the portrait studio at the mall, and I approached the counter. The young woman smiled.“May I help you?”“Yes, I'm here to pick up our photos.”The woman asked my name and opened her drawer, “Ah, yes, here they are. Aren't they just so adorable?” She took out the photos, and the smiling faces of my kids warmed my heart.“Yes, they are great. Thank you,” I said. She put the photos into an envelope. Then she spread out additional photos of my kids that I hadn't ordered. I knew what that meant—the upsellpitch(推销) was coming.“Would you like to buy these extra portraits? Upset and embarrassment creeping onto my face, I could feel it blushing with heat when I uttered that disappointing rejection. “I truly appreciate your kindness to print them out for me as they are so important and dear to me. However, I really didn’t have any extra money for a single one of them because of my currently extreme tight budget.” The young woman’s excitement disappeared as she grasped that I meant it. She enjoyed it so much that when that first project ended she joined Dr. Dahl's chemistry lab.在她大学的第二年,化学教授菲利普斯博士要求她加入他的研究团队。她非常喜欢它,以至于当第一个项目结束时,她加入了达尔博士的化学实验室。"可推断,通过亲身参加项目,Metko对于研究受到鼓舞,加入了达尔博士的实验室。故选C.26. D. 词句猜测题。根据第五段的" "Before going to Mayo Clinic this was just a career I had read about" Metko says of physician-researchers. "I'd met medical doctors and Ph.D.s but never someone who was both. "在去梅奥诊所之前,这是我知道的事业",梅特科说到了医生-研究员。"我见过医生和博士,但从来没见过两个都是的人。"可知,this指代"physician-researchers",也就是既是医生也是研究员的人。故选D.27. A. 推理判断题。根据第二段"Metko also knew with its strong biology program UWEC would give her the foundation and guidance she needed to pursue her dreams of studying medicine and specializing in infectious disease.梅特科也知道,凭借其强大的生物学项目,UWEC将为她提供基础和指导,以实现她学习医学和专门研究传染病的梦想。"可推断,Metko是一个有抱负的人,再根据最后一段的"Bright as her future is Metko's overcome many challenges like endless health issues but with a positive attitude to life she's actively received treatment and got through.虽然她的未来是光明的,梅特科克服了许多挑战,如无尽的健康问题,但以积极的生活态度,她积极接受治疗并克服这些困难。"可推断,Metko是一个积极乐观的人。A. Ambitious and optimistic雄心勃勃,乐观的;B. Humorous and courageous幽默勇敢的;C. Generous and sensitive慷慨而敏感的;D. Talented and demanding才华横溢,要求严格的。故选A.C28-31 D B A B【解析】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要向读者介绍曼哈顿铁路公园——由废弃的曼哈顿铁路干线转变成的一个公园。28. D 词句猜测题。根据第一段“However, one part remained in a region of Manhattan called Chelsea. Chelsea was becoming high-class as restaurants, art galleries and apartments were built, but the ugly railway structure remained as a dead weight.”中间的“but”可知,上下文是转折关系。上文意思是有一部分被保留下来的区域被叫做Chelsea,随着饭店、画廊和公寓被建,这里变成了高级场所。那么,下文就应该是说,其它的部分就没有什么用了。由此可知,划线词组指无用的减慢进步的东西。故选D项。29. B 细节理解题。根据第二段“David and Hammond were the only people at the meeting interested in saving the historical structure.(DavidHammond是会议上唯一对拯救历史建筑感兴趣的人)”可知,DavidHammond赞同保留下这条铁路就是因为他们对挽救历史结构感兴趣,有历史研究价值。故选B项。30. A细节理解题。根据最后一句话“Only the final section remains the way it has been for the last fifty years.(只有最后一部分保持了过去五十年来的样子)”可知,还有一部分保留了以前的样子。故选A项。31. B主旨大意题。根据文章开头“Most city parks are places where you can escape from big, ugly structures of metal and stone. The Manhattan High Line is different.(在大多数城市公园里,你可以逃离巨大、丑陋的金属和石头建筑。曼哈顿铁路公园则不同)”及下文介绍可知,这篇文章主要是关于一个不太可能成为公园的地方——曼哈顿铁路公园。故选B项。D32-35C A A C【解析】这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了研究人员发现,恰当地使用身体姿势能使学习更容易、更快、更持久。32. C 推理判断题。文章第二段讲到“In the past, people have argued that as we grow, we become more able to think abstractly (抽象地) (过去,人们认为,随着我们的成长,我们越来越能够抽象地思考)”以及“Conventional (传统的) thinking might suggest that teachers should help prevent children from using body gestures to prepare them for the adult world. (传统的这种想法可能表明,教师应该帮助防止孩子们使用身体姿势来为成人世界做准备)”可知,过去的人们认为学习应该去掉身体姿势,以促进成年人的思维。故选C33. A推理判断题。文章最后一段讲到“Also, some studies indicate that young children obtain more if their teacher uses gestures when explaining a concept. (此外,一些研究表明,如果老师在解释一个概念时使用手势,幼儿会获得更多。)”可知,作者让我们相信发现的真相是通过呈现不同的研究,故选A34. A 细节理解题。文章倒数第二段讲到“Kelly has also found evidence that a teacher is more appealing to students when he or she uses arm and hand movements to stress points. (凯利还发现证据表明,当老师用手臂和手的动作来强调重点时,他或她对学生更有吸引力。)”可知,我们可以从Spencer Kelly的研究中得知肢体动作可以提高教师的知名度,故选A35. C.主旨大意题。文章第一段讲到“Researchers are detecting that learning is easier, quicker and more long-lasting if it involves the body.(研究人员发现,如果涉及身体,学习更容易、更快、更持久。)”可知,本文主要介绍了研究人员发现,恰当地使用身体语言以及姿势能使学习更容易、更快、更持久。因此本文的主旨是:身体姿势:快速学习的利器,故选C第二节七选五 FGABE语篇解读:这是一篇说明文,主要介绍了一些冬季保持健康的方法36. G细节句。根据本段首句的“winter vegetables”和下文的“Heartywinter vegetables and leafy greens come packed with nutrients.”可知,本段说明的方法是吃冬季生长的蔬菜,G选项符合语境38. A主旨句。设空处位于句首,为主旨句。后文谈到了“stay active(保持活跃)”“try some new outdoor activitieslike skiing and sledding(尝试一些新的户外活动,如滑雪和滑雪橇)”,故本段主要讲的是尝试新的户外活动以保持活跃,A选项符合语境。A选项中的“something new”对应后文中的“some new outdoor activities39.
