For 20 years, two brothers living in the dirty neighborhood of Wazirabad in India's capital,Delhi, have been treating wounded black kites(鸢)that fall from the city's skies.
Mohammad Saud and Nadeem Shehzad rescue birds of prey-mostly injured by paper kite strings-and carry them to a basement garage at home. Here, they begin nursing them to health: cleaning and bandaging. wounds, fixing wings and broken bones.
Small miracles happen in the basement. Here lives are saved, a living is made and there's some happiness too. “You don't care for things because they share the same country, religion or politics,” say the brothers. “Life itself is relationship. That's why we can't abandon the birds.”
The brothers talk about how a neighborhood bird hospital refused to treat the first kite they rescued because it was a “non-vegetarian bird". At that time, they, were teenage bodybuilders and that's how they "came to know about flesh and muscles". They figured out ways to bandage the kites. They became passionate about birds. “We'd lie on the ground, watching the elegant flights in the sky,” they say. “The head would spin. Have you ever felt dizzy looking into the sky?"
The street outside the brothers' home becomes a smelly pool of sewage water which comes into the basement during the rainy season. Pigs wander in a muddy channel. Air quality reaches dangerous peaks. Yet there’s life and. hope. Monkeys climb playfully over some electric wires that hang unsteadily over narrow streets. An airplane in the sky is reflected in a pool of quiet water
When the weather clears, skies are filled with paper kites. And then the birds begin dropping, and the brothers are back at their job. Sometimes the birds fall after bumping against buildings in the smog or getting entangled(缠住)in overhead wires. At one point, there were more than 100 wounded birds in the basement. In 2017,Yazd, a city in the desert of central Iran, was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Yazd has long been a focal point for creative inventiveness. It is home to an underground refrigeration structure called
yakchat and an underground irrigation system called qanats. In addition, the city has the wind catcher, a cooling architectural element that has been used for thousands of years. And it has the most wind catchers in the world.
These remarkable towers are a common sight standing above the buildings of Yazd. There are two main forces that drive the air through and down into the structures: the incoming wind and the change in buoyancy(浮力)of air. First,as air is caught by the opening of a wind catcher, it is led down to the house below. Then the air flows throughout the inside of the building, sometimes over underground pools of water for further cooling. Eventually, warmed air will rise and leave the building through another tower or opening.
Some of the earliest wind-catching technology came from Egypt 3,300 years ago. Here, buildings had thick walls, few windows facing the sun, an opening to take in air and an exit opening on the other side known as malqaf architecture. Iran's wind-catching technology is widely considered to have added structural improvements to allow for better cooling-such as typically combining it with its existing irrigation system to help to cool the air down before releasing it throughout the home.
The structures, which require no electricity to power them, are now drawing scientists back to the desert city to see what role they could play in keeping us cool in a rapidly heating world. Parham Kheirkhah Sangdeh has extensively studied the scientific application and surrounding culture of wind catchers in contemporary architecture at Ilam University in Iran. He hopes to see Iran's wind catchers updated to add energy-efficient cooling to existing buildings. “People need to keep an eye on the past and understand why energy conservation is important,” he says.
28.Which of the following makes the city of Yazd unusual?
A. Its long history.
C. Its ancient innovative wonders.
B.Its extreme climates.
D.Its central geographical position.
29.Where is the opening of a wind catcher?
A.Near a house's door.
C. Beside the underground pools.
B.Above the rooftop.
D. Beneath a house's windows.
30. How does Iran's wind catcher differ from Egypt's malqaf ?
A. It is surrounded by thicker walls.
B. It has no windows facing the sun.
C.It requires no electricity to power it.
D. It takes advantage of water's properties.
31.What is Parham Kheirkhah Sangdeh working on?
A. Introducing wind catchers into today's buildings.
B.Studying the earliest wind catchers in Egypt.
C.Repairing traditional wind catchers in Yazd.
D.Creating energy conservation labs at Ilam University.

We have long been attracted by quick fixes that could increase our intelligence. Today, people's hopes lie in brain training apps, some of which claim to result in “smarter minds”. But is this quick fix all it is said to be?
There are plenty of brain training apps, but they all share the same characteristics: they turn mental exercises like simple arithmetic(算术),memory tests and logic and pattern-matching problems into quick games. The more you play these mini-games, the smarter you will get-or so some apps tell us. It is really a big promise.
Many of the apps say they are beaked by “science”, a claim I found surprising as a former neuroscientist. The concept that increasing intelligence would be as simple as practicing a few mini-games every day flies in the face of what we have discovered about how humans think and learn.
After surveying a diverse spread of thousands of users across a wide variety of apps, researchers at Western University in Canada discovered that “brain training has no appreciable effect on cognitive(认知的)functioning in the 'real world', even after extensive training periods”. The positive effects that have been found are restricted to the very specific mini-games and tasks that users 'are trained on, such as the ability to memorize lists of words or numbers, or perform mental arithmetic, with little benefit to other skills.
If you are expecting them to improve your ability to write a novel or construct a complex spreadsheet. I am afraid you will want to look elsewhere.
Puzzle video games such as “Baba Is You” and “Return of the Obra Dinn ”,see players apply their skill at logic, memory and concentration in a far more complex way than any brain training mini-game.
32.What does the author say about brain training apps?
A.They have scientific support.
B. They work in the form of games.
C.They require problem-solving skills.
D.They are based on complex arithmetic.
33. What does the underlined part “flies in the face of” in paragraph 3 mean'
A.Agrees with.
C.Goes against.
B. Takes advantage of.
D..Comes from.
34.Which:best describes the effects that brain training apps have on memory?
A.Limited.
C.Damaging.
B.Indirect.
D.Far-reaching
35. What is the author's attitude to “Baba Is You”?
A.Doubtful.
B.Intolerant.
C. Uninterested.
D.Favorable.

Many people don't treat themselves very well. They break promises to themselves, eat poorly, don't get enough sleep, are self-critical or fail to take good care of their bodies.
A great technique for treating yourself better is by developing your Inner Nurturing Parent. Imagine you had a little child. You'd make every effort to keep her healthy and safe; to love and support her; to be forgiving her mistakes and her inevitable slips; and to let her know how precious and important she is. 36 Only, in this case, you’re the parent and the child.
37 Tell yourself, “I love you and appreciate who you are.” When you do something well, give yourself a pat on the back. Say, “Great job! I'm so proud of you.” When you're struggling or feeling low, be supportive by saying, “I'm here for you. You're not alone,”
Take good care of yourself. A loving parent would make sure you eat right and get plenty of rest sleep, fresh air and exercise. 38 Practicing good self-care is an essential part of this process.
Set healthy boundaries with others. Let people know what you want and don't want. Tell them what's okay for you and what's not. If you have a friend who's always late and you end up waiting for her and feeling annoyed, tell her how you feel.39
Be concerned about yourself. 40_You're human and you're going to make mistakes. Don't punish or blame yourself. Reassure yourself. Comfort yourself. Accept yourself unconditionally.
A. Cheer yourself up constantly.
B. A nurturing parent. wouldn't let someone treat you badly.
C. Have sympathy for your humanity and your weaknesses.
D. That's what a loving parent does.

Chinese scientists have revealed the origin of calcium in first stars by using the world's deepest underground laboratory in southwest China's Sichuan Province, according to a study 56(publish) online Wednesday in the journal Nature.
In 2014,Australian astronomers observed the 57 (old) star ever known by human beings, a K-type red giant star named SMSS0313-6708, on 58 lithium, carbon, magnesium and calcium were observed. However, the origin of calcium in the star remained 59 mystery. The China Jinping Underground Laboratory(CJPL),which 60 (be) 2,400 meters under a mountain in Sichuan Province, started operating in December 2010.
Chinese researchers carried 61 relevant experiments in the laboratory. They 62 (success) verified the hypothesis that calcium comes from a key breakout reaction of carbon, nitrogen and oxygen cycle (CNO cycle),63(reveal) the origin of calcium in the star. The CJPL can greatly reduce the influence of cosmic 64 (ray) and provide unique conditions for direct measurement of important nuclear reactions of astrophysical interest, said He Jianjun of Beijing Normal University, the first corresponding author of the article.

Factoring in the biting wind, I knew the temperature was below zero. The bitter cold cut through my Californian sensibilities, as well as my enthusiasm as a tourist, so I moved ;to the nearest door for warmth.··and found myself in a station.
I settled onto one of the public benches with a steaming cup of coffee-waiting for feeling to return to my fingers and toes-and relaxed to watch the people around.
Several tables of diners spilled out into the great hall from the American Restaurant, and smells of the food caused me to consider an early dinner. I observed a man seated nearby and, from the longing in his eyes, realized that he, too, noticed the tasty food. His skinny body, chapped(皲裂的)hands and shabby clothes nearly shouted,“Homeless, homeless!”
I wondered how long it had been since he last ate.
Half expecting him to approach me for a handout(施舍物),I almost welcomed such a request. He never did. The longer I took in the scene, the crueler his situation seemed. My head and heart experienced a' silent war, one telling me to mind my own business, and the other urging a trip to the food court on his behalf.
While my internal debate went on, a well-dressed young couple approached him. “Excuse me, sir,” the husband began. “My wife and I just finished eating, and our appetites weren't as big as we thought. We hate to waste good food. Can you help us out and put this to use?” He extended a large container.
“God bless you both,” came the grateful reply.
Pleased, yet upset by my own lack of action, I continued to watch. The man rearranged the soup crackers, inspected the sandwich and stirred the salad dressing. Then, slowly he lifted the soup lid, cupping his hands around the steaming bowl. At last, he unwrapped the plastic spoon, filled it to overflowing, lifted it toward his mouth and, all of a sudden, stopped short.
I turned my head to follow his narrow-eyed gaze.
注意:
1.续写词数应为,150左右;
Entering the hall and walking slowly in our direction was an old man.
He placed the still-warm bowl of soup in the old man's hands without waiting for an answer.

33.C。 根据第三段中的“a claim I found surprising”和第四段所提到的研究结果“brain training has no appreciable effect on cognitive(认知的)functioning in the'real world'”可知,研究表明脑力训练对“现实世界”的
注:fly in the face of 意为“悍然不顾;与······相悖”。
36.D。根据前面“You’d make every effort to keep her healthy and safe; to love and support her;to be forgiving her mistakes and her inevitable slips; and to let her know how precious and important she is.”
38.G。根据本段首句“Take good care of yourself.”
39.B。根据首句“Set healthy boundaries with others.” 后面两句也是在告诉我们不能过于迁就别人,所以作者总结说“A nurturing parent wouldn’t let someone treat you badly.”
40.C。根据后面的“You're human and you’re going to make mistakes.Don't punish or blame yourself.”
41.B。Mrs.Windsor
42.A。“我”在门口等待的时候无所事事,所以“我”在瞎想。daydreamed“做白日梦;胡思乱想”。predicted“预测”,体现不出作者当时那种无聊。
43.C。句意:尽管Mrs.Winsor教了我读、理解甚至写乐谱,但是我就是没有天赋。
44.B。由下文的“我”觉得有责任学和上文的“offer”可以得知,Mrs.Windsor免费给“我”L课。
45.A。 sort through“整理”,look over意为“检查”,go over意为“复习”,look through 意为“浏览”。
follow“跟随”,equal“等于”,resemble“像”。
49.D。 professional“专业的”,skillful“娴熟的”,stubborn“固执的”。
51.B。由下文的“I didn’t know what she meant”可知“我”当时就不理解,所以就很奇怪地看着她。anxiously“焦虑地”,sadly“悲伤地”,gratefully“感激地”。
left“离开”,dropped“掉下”,departed“离开”。
56.published。
57.oldest。
58.which。 介词+which,which指SMSS0313-6708。
60.is。
61.out。
62.successfully。
63.revealing。
64.rays。
65.experimental。

Dear Mr.Smith,
I'm Li Hua, taking charge of the Chinese Hanfu show during the international cultural festival. I'm sorry to bother you but I wish you could give me a hand with the following problems.
First, only five exchange students from China are familiar with the Hanfu show, but we need at least fifteen students to take part. So I'd like you to recommend more students who are interested in the show. Second, there are not enough Hanfu dresses in our school. Therefore, I wonder if you could borrow some for us from the local cultural center.
I would be grateful if you could offer me some help. I am looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

Text 10
438 Days is the true story of a fisherman who survived fourteen months in a small boat moving about without any destination some seven thousand miles from Mexice across the Pacific Ocean, (20)
On November 17, 2012, a pair of fishermen left the coast of Mexico for a weekend fishing trip in the open Pacific. That night, a violent storm attacked them as they were fishing eighty miles off shore.(18) Facing strong winds and ten-foot waves, captain Salvador Alvarenga and his crewmate cut away a two-mile-long fishing line and began a desperate dash through crashing waves as they sought a safe port anxiously. Fourteen months later, on January 30, 2014,Alvarenga,now a hairy, wild-bearded and half-mad castaway, was washed ashore on a nearly deserted island on the far side of the Pacific. He could barely speak and was unable to walk.
438 Days is the first-ever account of one of the most amazing survival stories in modern times.(20)Based on dozens of hours of interviews with Alvarenga, the remote islanders who first found him,(19)his colleagues, search-and-rescue officials, and the medical team that saved his life, 438 Days is an unforgettable study of the will and determination required for one man to survive more than a year lost at sea.

The brothers once swam across the river to rescue a bird with a broken wing.

26.How does the author develop the fifth paragraph?
A.By listing some data.
C.By telling a sad story.
B. By making an analysis.
D. By making comparisons.
27.What might be the most suitable title for the text ?
A.Indian Kites Are in Danger of Extinction
B. Paper Kites Are Posing a Threat to Indian Birds
C.Two Brothers Are Saving Birds Dropping from the Sky
D.Huge Numbers of Kites Are Flying over the City of Delhi

E.You should always regard yourself as a child.

注意:
1.续写词数应为,150左右;
Entering the hall and walking slowly in our direction was an old man.
He placed the still-warm bowl of soup in the old man's hands without waiting for an answer.

21.C。 根据第一段中的“Thank you for making an appointment for your second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Your appointment details are below.”
根据文中的“2.Your vaccination record card.”
根据文中的“If you are feeling unwell on the day of your appointment, you will need to reschedule your appointment”可知,如有必要,需要重新安排疫苗接种时间。
根据第三段中的“Life itself is relationship. That’s why we can’t abandon the birds.”
根据第四段中的“The brothers talk about how a neighborhood bird hospital refused to treat the first kite they rescued because it was a non-vegetarian bird'.”
第五段的前三句“The street outside the brothers' home.··Air quality reaches dangerous peaks.”描写这里的环境恶劣,而本段的后三句“Yet there’s life and hope. A pool of quiet water.”
根据第一段中的“Yazd has long been a focal point for creative inventiveness.”
根据第二段中的“These remarkable towers are a common sight standing above the buildings of Yazd...air is caught by the opening of a wind catcher,it is led down to the house below.”
根据第三段中的“Iran's wind-catching technology is widely considered to have added structural improvements to allow for better cooling-such as typically combining it with its existing irrigation system”可知, 与埃及的风塔不同,伊朗的风塔通常与灌溉系统相结合,这就说明伊朗风塔利用水可以降温的特质。
31.A。 根据最后一段中的“Parham Kheirkhah Sangdeh has extensively studied the scientific application and surrounding culture of wind catchers in contemporary architecture”可知,Kheirkhah Sangdeh 正在致力于在现代建筑中使用风塔。
再根据第三段中的“Many of the apps say they are backed by 'science', a claim I found surprising”可知,作者并不认同脑力训练应用程序有所谓的科学支持。
33.C。 根据第三段中的“a claim I found surprising”和第四段所提到的研究结果“brain training has no appreciable effect on cognitive(认知的)functioning in the'real world'”可知,研究表明脑力训练对“现实世界”的
注:fly in the face of 意为“悍然不顾;与······相悖”。
36.D。根据前面“You’d make every effort to keep her healthy and safe; to love and support her;to be forgiving her mistakes and her inevitable slips; and to let her know how precious and important she is.”
38.G。根据本段首句“Take good care of yourself.”
39.B。根据首句“Set healthy boundaries with others.” 后面两句也是在告诉我们不能过于迁就别人,所以作者总结说“A nurturing parent wouldn’t let someone treat you badly.”
40.C。根据后面的“You're human and you’re going to make mistakes.Don't punish or blame yourself.”
41.B。Mrs.Windsor
42.A。“我”在门口等待的时候无所事事,所以“我”在瞎想。daydreamed“做白日梦;胡思乱想”。predicted“预测”,体现不出作者当时那种无聊。
43.C。句意:尽管Mrs.Winsor教了我读、理解甚至写乐谱,但是我就是没有天赋。
44.B。由下文的“我”觉得有责任学和上文的“offer”可以得知,Mrs.Windsor免费给“我”L课。
45.A。 sort through“整理”,look over意为“检查”,go over意为“复习”,look through 意为“浏览”。
follow“跟随”,equal“等于”,resemble“像”。
49.D。 professional“专业的”,skillful“娴熟的”,stubborn“固执的”。
51.B。由下文的“I didn’t know what she meant”可知“我”当时就不理解,所以就很奇怪地看着她。anxiously“焦虑地”,sadly“悲伤地”,gratefully“感激地”。
left“离开”,dropped“掉下”,departed“离开”。
56.published。
57.oldest。
58.which。 介词+which,which指SMSS0313-6708。
60.is。
61.out。
62.successfully。
63.revealing。
64.rays。
65.experimental。

Dear Mr.Smith,
I'm Li Hua, taking charge of the Chinese Hanfu show during the international cultural festival. I'm sorry to bother you but I wish you could give me a hand with the following problems.
First, only five exchange students from China are familiar with the Hanfu show, but we need at least fifteen students to take part. So I'd like you to recommend more students who are interested in the show. Second, there are not enough Hanfu dresses in our school. Therefore, I wonder if you could borrow some for us from the local cultural center.
I would be grateful if you could offer me some help. I am looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

W:Thanks for doing this for me. I really appreciate it.
M:No problem. I wasn't doing anything else this morning, anyway. So, are you excited or nervous?
W:A little bit of both. On the one hand, I have been looking forward to this trip for the last six months. (11)On the other hand, it's difficult saying goodbye to my family and friends.
M:I think it's really brave of you to make a decision like this. Not many people would go travelling by themselves.(11)How long will you be away for?
W:Just the summer, I want to be back for the start of next semester.(12) I'm starting my first year of university then.
M:Do you want me to help you with bags and go in with you? I can leave my car here in the parking lot.(13)
W:There is no need. I just have one suitcase. (13)
M:OK.Well, have a safe flight, and don't forget to write!
W:Bye!

M:Hey,I heard you were leaving San Francisco.
W:That's right. By next week, I'll be living in the Big Apple.(14)
M:Why? I thought you loved the West Coast.
W:I do. It's beautiful, and the weather is perfect. But I'm trying to make it as a singer and it's impossible here. All of the music clubs here have closed down in the last few years.
M:Do you know why?
W:Yeah. As housing prices have gone up, clubs have been torn down to build new neighborhoods.
M:That's true. Now the only places to go here are restaurants.
W:Yeah.So there aren't many places to perform.(15)
M:OK,but won't your family miss you?
W:I only have a brother here. Most of my family are actually in Philadelphia. I'll be much closer to them once I move. (16)
M:Isn't it expensive to live in New York? (14)
W:It is, but the cost of living in San Francisco has also risen in the past few years. My rent will be about the same.
M:Wow.Well, are you sure you'll be able to find places to perform?
W:Yes.I've actually scheduled a performance already. And it's important that I should not waste any time.I'm twenty-six years old, and I need to make a name for myself in the next four years.(17)
M:Wow.Most women your age are thinking about getting married. My sister had her first baby when she was twenty-four.
W:Not me! I don't think I'll ever get married. I just want to sing.
