Quantum bits (qubits)(量子比特）in a quantum cmputer serve as a cmputing unit and memry at the same time. Because quantum infrmatin cannt be cpied,it cannt be stred in a memry as in a classical cmputer. Due t this limitatin, all qubits in a quantum cmputer must be able t interact(相互影响)with each ther. This is nw still a majr challenge fr building pwerful quantum cmputers. In 2015,theretical physicist Wlf--gang Lechner,tgether with his team,slved this difficulty and suggested a new architecture fr a quantum cmputer.
“This architecture was riginally designed fr making prblems best. In the prcess, we reduced the architecture t a minimum,” recalls Lechner. “It means that nt all qubits have t interact with each ther anymre.” With his team, he has nw fund that this parity(奇偶）cncept is als suitable fr a universal quantum cmputer.
Parity cmputers can perfrm peratins between tw r mre qubits n a single qubit. “Existing quantum cmputers already perfrm such peratins very well n a small scale,” Michael Fellner frm Lechner’s team explains. “Hwever, as the number f qubits increases,it becmes mre and mre cmplex t perfrm these gate peratins. ” Scientists nw shw that parity cmputers can perfrm quantum Furier transfrmatins with significantly fewer cmputatin steps and thus mre quickly.
