Should Museum Entry Be Free?
With International Museum Day coming up, today we are asking readers: Should museums be free or should people have to pay for a ticket? Let us know ‘your opinion’.
Comments below:
Museums are not only there for enjoyment; they are education. This is why they must be free. While museums need a huge amount of money to operate, let the wealthy pay for it. The idea of a person or child interested in art not being able to view it because of cost is wrong.
Krista Chen (US)—Age 15
Free entry does not attract people or encourage them to appreciate art. Generally people respect things that are difficult or costly to get. Museums should require regular visitors to pay a fee, but provide free tickets as prizes for high-achieving students who can appreciate them more.
Fred Smith (New Zealand)—Age 14
Museums teach people about their past. This is part of our shared culture that should be available to everyone, rich or poor. People should never be asked to pay an entrance fee.
Rob Sanchez (Australia)—Age 17
There are no simple answers to the question. Low ticket prices could help museums stay open. But companies and businessmen should also provide museums with more money and other support. They have a social responsibility too.
Amber White (UK)—Age 16
I think museums and art galleries should all be free to the public. I do, however, think twice a year the museums should organize money-raising events to help pay for the cost of staying open.
Li Mishao (China)—Age 15
( )21.How many readers support the idea of free museums?
A.Two B.Three C.Four D.Five
( )22.Who suggests museums should regularly hold special events to collect money?
A.Krista Chen. B.Fred Smith. C.Rob Sanchez. D.Li Mishao.
( )23.Why does Fred Smith believe that free tickets should be given to high-achieving students?
A.Students will then study harder. B.Museums will attract more visitors.
C.Museums can make themselves more famous. D.These students can better appreciate museums.
( )24.Which of the following does Amber White agree with?
A.Businesses should offer museums more help.
B.People should only pay what they can afford.
C.Free entry doesn’t encourage visitors to museums.
D.Everybody should have a chance to visit museums.

Students in France have one less thing to put in their backpacks these days. The country recently banned(禁止)smart phones in public schools for all students through ninth grade. Many schools around the United States have similar bans.
Some educators say kids pay better attention in class when they aren't constantly(始终)looking at their phones. They say banning phones encourages students to talk to catch other more.
Most teachers would agree that they don't want a classroom full of kids texting. But many say a total ban on phones isn't necessary. Some people argue that it is better to teach kids to use technology responsibly(负责任地)than take it away. Plus, many parents point out that they need to be able to reach their kids during the day.

Smartphones make it difficult for students to concentrate(聚精会神)in class. Kids might play games, watch videos, or check out apps instead of paying attention to the teacher. You might not think much about where your garbage goes. But now you might want to know. On July 1, Shanghai introduced a new garbage-sorting policy (垃圾分类政策). People there need to put various kinds of garbage into different bins. Other cities in China will do the same soon.
Garbage sorting is a big problem because there is too much garbage these days. It is bad for our environment. In fact, we can make use of some garbage again. But first, we need to sort it.For example, if you put an old battery (电池) into the "harmful waste" bin, people can use it to make new batteries. But if you don't, the battery will end up somewhere else. Then, it will pollute the environment.
Garbage sorting and recycling around the world:
Germany: There are big machines in supermarkets. You can put bottles in the machines and get rewards which can drive people to do a better job of garbage sorting and recycling.
Japan: A truck playing music comes to people's doors to pick up their garbage. There are eight or more kinds of garbage. If you sort any of them wrong, you will get a notice on your door.
Indonesia: People can take buses for free if they give plastic bottles to bus-stations. An hour-long bus ride costs three large bottles.
Four kinds of garbage in Shanghai:
Recyclable garbage includes paper, books, plastic items, and glass bottles. Harmful garbage includes lamps, batteries, and other things with harmful chemicals (化学品). Wet garbage usually comes from the kitchen, such as food and vegetables. Dry garbage is anything you cannot put into the other three bins, pens and towels, for example.

When people talk to each other, write letters or make phone calls, words of the spoken form or the written form can send any message they want to pass on.
But besides words,do you know any other ways you can use to communicate with people?Rich expressions on your face can be one of them.A smile on your face shows that you are happy.Tears in your eyes tell others that you are sad or excited.Body languages can do the same job.Do you want to know what body language is? Lynne Edwards collects interesting materials for making quilts(被子). She started making quilts many years ago, and is well known for this work at art centers around the world.
“When I see a piece of material I love, I must have it cut into shapes,” Lynne says.
Making quilts wasn’t the popular hobby as it is today. It started around the 18th century in America, when mothers and daughters at home wanted something to do. They spent days cutting and fitting small shapes together to hang on the wall. In those days, many people couldn’t afford much material. So they made simpler quilts for keeping themselves warm in winter. They cut larger square, rectangle (长方形), and triangle shapes. These shapes, or “patches (补丁)” , of material fitted together well, with very little waste of material.
In America, the “patchwork” had names like Bear’s Foot, Duck Tracks, and The Snowy Mountains. Each quilt told a story about the animals and the countryside where they were made. These old artworks are displayed, now, in museums and art shops where people copy the colors and shapes.
The skills to make quilts by hand were nearly lost in the early 20th century. More people had jobs in cities and the shops sold cheap new machine-made material for homes. People were too busy to cut material and join shapes together using their hands. In the late 20th century, people’s interest in old countryside hand skills helped in making homes look interesting. Making hand-made quilts soon became the trend of that time.
“It’s always better” says Lynne, “to make your own quilt by hand, or better still, with family. A handmade family quilt is special. Sharing quilt making with family is a social event. This is the one you want to keep forever.”
( )31. What was the most important reason for making quilts in the 18th century?
A.To keep people warm. B.To add interest to homes.
C.To have a special hobby. D.To find something to do.
( )32. What is the purpose that people used large squares, rectangles and triangles ?
A.use less material B.make the shapes easily
C.enjoy the artwork D.keep the shapes the same size
( )33. What do we know about the quilts in America from the names of the artworks?
A.People had a great love for small animals.
B.Some quilts showed a picture of a modern city.
C.All the quilts were made in country villages.
D.Most quilts were made using the same shapes.
( )34. What does the underlined word “trend” mean in Chinese?
A.变化 B.影响 C. 风格 D.趋势
( )35. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Sharing quilt making skills can let us make new friends.
B.A handmade family quilt is always unforgettable.
C.A handmade quilt is warmer than a machine-made one.
D.A quilt can be made easily if the whole family did it.

Most of us probably live without vegetables, but a world without chocolate? Now that would be hard! According to chocolate makers it could happen if we don't act soon.
There are two main causes of the chocolate shortage(短缺)—chocolate's growing popularity and less production of cocoa(可可果), the plant which chocolate is made from. With more and more people in India and China loving chocolate, not much can be done about the first cause.
Therefore, the only thing we can do is to increase cocoa production. However, new plant diseases and little rain in Ivory Coast and Ghana, the world's largest producers, have reduced cocoa production by 40 percent in the past 10 years. What's worse, many cocoa farmers in Africa and other cocoaproducing countries like Indonesia and Venezuela are changing to easier to grow crops such as corn or rubber. This way, the farmers can make more money.
To prevent more farmers from changing, researchers at the newly opened International Cocoa Control Centre, in the UK, are trying to create new cocoa plants that are stronger and faster growing. But first they must make sure the new plants are safe to grow. This takes a long time.
First, each new plant is stored at the Control Centre for six months to make sure it is healthy. It is then planted in the Centre's fields, studied and tested for another two years. Only after scientists are certain that they're diseasefree, will the plants be sent to farmers in West Africa or wherever else they are needed.
To create new stronger types of cocoa, scientists at the Centre are combining the best parts from different cocoa plants. Though the world is facing a serious chocolate shortage, there is now hope!
( )21.The first paragraph tells us that________.
A.chocolate is healthier than vegetables
B.the world could soon be without chocolate
C.people love vegetables more than chocolate
D.it's not necessary to eat so much chocolate
( )22.In which countries has chocolate become more popular in recent years?
A.Venezuela and Indonesia. B.Ivory Coast and Ghana.
C.Indonesia and China. D.China and India.
( )23.Cocoa farmers are choosing to grow rubber and corn because these crops________.
A.can make them more money B.need less rain to grow
C.can be planted more times each year D.are not damaged by plant diseases
( )24.What does the underlined word “reduced”in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.增长 B.减少 C.改善 D.延缓
( )25.What is one of the purposes of the Cocoa Control Centre?
A.To introduce cocoa production to more countries.
B.To provide more chocolate for British people.
C.To produce stronger types of cocoa plants.
D.To make sure that cocoa is healthy to eat.
