“Well,” said the farmer, “these puppies come from fine parents and cost a great deal of money.”

The boy dropped his head for a moment. Then he pulled out a handful of coins from his pocket and said, “I’ve got thirty-nine cents. Is that enough to take a look?”

The farmer smiled and whistled. Out of the doghouse came Little Dolly, who ran down the ramp (坡道) followed by four other little balls of fur. One puppy was lagging very much behind the others.” I want that one,” the little boy said, pointing at the limping (瘸着腿走) puppy.

In the future, people may travel to Mars (火星) by waterpowered spaceship! Today’s spaceships are fine for getting things into space. These spaceships burn chemical fuels (燃料) , and they are very expensive. Scientists say that a waterpowered spaceship could make the trip to Mars much cheaper. Scientists think such a spaceship could be developed soon.

The key to the waterpowered spaceship is the engine (发动机). Regular (常规的) engines push spaceships by burning fuel. The water engine will use steam (水蒸气), created by solar panels (太阳能板) that heat water to a high temperature. Of course, the spaceship will have to carry a lot of water for the long trip to Mars. Today's spaceships could not carry that much water. But scientists think that a spaceship blown up like a balloon will make it come true

One US company has already developed a spaceship like this. “Balloon” spaceships could carry enough water for a long trip. With the “Balloon” spaceships, enough water could be carried to power the engines and grow food during the trip. And the people on the spaceship might even get to take a hot bath!

Scientists say the biggest advantage (优势) of such a spaceship would be cost. The “Balloon” spaceship uses water to push it through space and costs about one thirtieth of a normal spaceship. If these scientists are correct, we may soon be on our way to Mars in a spaceship powered by water.

13What does the underlined word “it” refer to (指的是)?

AUsing steam.     BPushing spaceships.    CCarrying that much water.

14Water in the “Balloon” spaceship might be used in the following ways EXCEPT (除了) ______.

    Achemical fuels  Bwind power          Cwater

16What’s the main idea of the text?

AThe advantages of the waterpowered spaceship.

BThe advantages of the fuelpowered spaceship.

CThe trip to Mars by waterpowered spaceship.

The leader of the research Dr. Miranda van Tilburg was very excited about the finding. She believes it can be a very cheap and easy way to deal with kids’ stomach pains. However, she said it would not work as well with adults.

    Dear classmates,

It’s my great honor to be here to give you a speech. Today I’d like to talk about the changes about me when I entered the middle school.

Great changes have taken place in many ways such as my appearance, my personality and my study. In the past, I was very fat and not tall. But now, I become strong and very tall after doing some exercise. And two years ago, I was too shy to talk with others. However, now I not only like chatting with my classmates but also like asking questions when I run into some trouble in subjects.

I think the most important change is my study. After two years’ hard work I have made great progress in all the subjects. At first, I had difficulty in studying. But luckily, I found some good ways to improve my grades. First, listen carefully in class and take notes. Second, make a list of questions that I don’t understand and then ask teachers after class. Last, go over what I have learned and review what I will learn.

In a word, I like the changes that have happened to me.
