Technlgy has undubtedly pened up the wrld fr me. Literally, in the case f my fully accessible hme. My windws are autmatic, and my frnt dr is autmatic t. There are als my wheelchairs. I guess that any wheelchair user will say the best inventin is that f the wheel. It’s a tl bringing independence and cmfrt.
Last week, I tk a well-deserved break frm wrk and went n a staycatin in my lcal area. On the first day, I was heading further ut in my pwer wheelchair than I’ve ever been n my wn. This chair is almst like a Transfrmer. I like the speed, the phne charger and the flexible feature. It’s a wnderful creatin.
Hwever, while there are many benefits that cme with technlgy, I still live in a disabling wrld. Fr example, ut in my pwer wheelchair that day, feeling free and easy, I headed straight t the shp nt far away. I deserve t feel heard and included when innvatin is cncerned. But when I gt there, I was cnfrnted by self-service checkuts. While they are designed fr easy and quick service, fr me and many ther disabled peple, the lack f face-t-face services can put us at a disadvantage. Nt nly are the checkuts far t high, they are awkwardly designed s that yu cannt apprach them with a wheelchair. S, I waited fr smene t assist me. In just a matter f a few hurs, I had seen hw technlgy and accessibility advancements have empwered me then, in the next breath, disabled me.
I still live in a disabling wrld with sub-standard accessibility. Therefre, disabled peple by and large are mre likely t rely n mechanical and technlgical devices such as lifts and cmmunicatin aids. Unfrtunately, these things are smetimes abused and mistreated, making the persn relying n them dependent n thers.
