I left university with a good degree in English Literature, but no sense of what I wanted to do. Over the next six years, I was treading water (停滞不前), just trying to earn an income. I tried journalism, but I didn't think I was any good, then finance, which I hated. Finally, I got a job as a rights assistant at a famous publisher. I loved working with books, although the job that I did was dull.
I had enough savings to take a year off work, and I decided to try to satisfy a deep-down wish to write a novel. Attending a Novel Writing MA course gave me the structure I needed to write my first 55, 000 words.
It takes confidence to make a new start—there's a dark period in-between where you're neither one thing nor the other. You're out for dinner and people ask what you do, and you're too ashamed to say, “Well, I'm writing a novel, but I'm not quite sure if I'm going to get there.” My confidence dived. Believing my novel could not be published, I put it aside.
Then I met an agent (代理商) who said I should send my novel out to agents. So, I did and, to my surprise, got some wonderful feedback. I felt a little hope that I might actually become a published writer and, after signing with an agent, I finished the second half of the novel.
The next problem was finding a publisher. After two-and-a-half years of no income, just waiting and wondering, a publisher offered me a book deal—that publisher turned out to be the one I once worked for.
It feels like an unbelievable stroke of luck—of fate, really. When you set out to do something different, there's no end in sight, so to find myself in a position where I now have my own name on a contract (合同) of the publisher—to be a published writer—is unbelievably rewarding.
    24. Why did the author decide to write a novel?
    A. Because she hated her previous jobs.
    B. Because her parents and friends had encouraged her to do so.
    C. Because she wanted to pursue her own dream of writing a novel.
    D. Because she graduated from university with a good degree in English Literature.
    25. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 3 mean?
    A. She became less stubborn. B. She became more stubborn.
    C. She suddenly lost confidence. D. She gradually gained confidence.
    26. Who agreed to publish the author's first novel?
    A. An agent who she signed with.
    B. A rights assistant she once worked with.
    C. An agent who advised her to send her novel out to agents.
    D. A publisher who she once worked for as a rights assistant.
    27. Which of the following words can best describe the author's experience as a writer?
    A. Tough but rewarding. B. Interesting and smooth.
    C. Difficult but thrilling. D. Complicated and fruitless.
    C
Feeling extremely stressed by your to-do list can make you unhappy, but a new study suggests that more free time might not be the magic way most of us dream it could be.
The researchers analyzed data from 35, 000 subjects about how Americans spend their free time. They found that people with more free time generally had higher levels of subjective happiness—but only up to a point. Compared to those with less time, people with up to two hours of free time a day generally felt better. However, people who had five or more hours of free time a day generally felt worse. So the free-time “sweet spot” might be two to three hours per day.
Part of finding this “sweet spot” is connected with how people spend their free time. In an online experiment, the subjects were asked to imagine having four to seven free hours per day and spending that time doing “productive” or “unproductive” activities. Most of them believed their well-being would suffer if they had a lot of free time during the day—but only if they used it unproductively. Though that experiment was based on the previous assumptions, which is one limitation, it agrees with other experiments showing that being in a state of flow (心流状态) can benefit people's mental health.
Of course, for you, any activities that increase your happiness are “productive.” If watching soap opera in your free time makes you feel better, you should do that due to self-care. And some traditionally productive activities can be easy and fun1. For example, walking and cooking can help burn stress and put people in a state of flow.
“In cases where people find themselves with large amounts of free time, such as retirement or unemployment,” Sharif said, “our results suggest they can benefit from spending their newfound time with purposes.”
    28. How much free time one day do people have that can generally make them feel better?
    A. About 60 minutes. B. About 90 minutes.
    C. From 120 to 180 minutes. D. From 180 to 210 minutes.
    29. What does the third paragraph mainly tell us?
    A. How being in a state of flow can benefit people's mental health.
    B. How the researchers analyzed data from the 35, 000 subjects.
    C. How “productive” activities are different from “unproductive” ones.
    D. How people make use of their free time influences their happiness.
    30. How can we understand the “productive” activities in paragraph 4?
    A. They must be fun and easy. B. They are mostly traditional ones.
    C. They depend on one's own sense. D. They generally rely on one's own physical condition.
    31. What did Sharif say to people who have a lot of free time?
    A. People should spend their time with aims.
    B. It is not easy for people to have newfound time.
    C. People can benefit from large amounts of free time.
    D. Retired and unemployed people can't deal with free time well.
    D
A Dutch collector who says he bought the Zhang Gong Patriarch—an ancient Buddha statue (佛像) containing the mummified (木乃伊化的) remains of a famous monk—has been ordered to return the stolen relic to its original owners, two villages in Fujian province. The Fujian Provincial High People's Court announced the order on July 19, upholding the original ruling (裁决) made by a lower court about two years ago.
In a ruling in late 2020, the Sanming Intermediate People's Court demanded that Oscar van Overeem, the Dutch architect and collector who bought the statue, return it to Yangchun and Dongpu villages. For local villagers, the statue is a significant cultural relic that had been at the Puzhao Temple in Sanming, Fujian province, where they could honor and worship (礼拜) it before it was stolen in December 1995, according to the high court. The lawyer for Van Overeem did not comment or give a statement over the ruling.
After further investigation (调查) and trial, the high court said on July 19 that although Van Overeem has said he bought the statue in Amsterdam in 1996, he could not provide a receipt (收据).In March 2015, he allowed the statue to be exhibited at the Hungarian1 Natural History Museum in Budapest, the high court said.
The high court upheld the lower court's ruling that the statue was stolen and is an illegally exported cultural relic. The high court added the statue reflects the traditional customs of southern Fujian and has a special meaning for the villagers, and, therefore, should be returned. Lawyers from both sides were present when the ruling was announced on Tuesday. A number of legislators (立法者), political advisers and journalists were also on hand for the ruling.
Lin Kaian, a villager from Yangchun who was present at the court when the ruling was announced on Tuesday, said, “I'm glad to hear the high court ruled in favor of us demanding the return of the statue. We respect the ruling, and we hope the statue will be back with us as soon as possible.”
    32. What does the underlined word “upholding” in paragraph 1 mean?
    A. Doubting. B. Supporting. C. Reviewing. D. Changing.
    33. How did he get the Buddha statue according to Oscar van Overeem himself?
    A. He paid for it in Amsterdam. B. He asked someone else to steal it.
    C. He got it from a villager in Sanming. D. He took it from the Puzhao Temple.
    34. What do we know about the statue according to the text?
    A. The statue is a significant cultural relic that had been at the villager's house.
    B. The lawyer for Van Overeem expressed his disagreement with the ruling in 2020.
    C. In March 2015, Van Overeem allowed the statue to be exhibited in Amsterdam.
    D. The lower court announced it is an illegally exported cultural relic.
    35. Which can serve as the best title for the news report?
    A. Buddha statue reflects traditional customs of southern Fujian
    B. Villagers look for Buddha statue ever since its disappearance
    C. Dutch collector warned to provide receipt for Buddha statue
    D. Dutch collector ordered to return Buddha statue

If you are feeling that life just cannot be any worse for you, it can be tough to think positive thoughts. It is important to turn those negative thoughts to something positive when we are stressed, depressed, upset or otherwise in a negative state of mind because we think that “bad things” keep happening to us. 36
It is often very hard to think positively when so many things are negative, but I can assure you that someone somewhere is worse off than you. 37
If you start with one small, positive step and repeat it during the course of your day, you will begin to move into a more positive position: positive thoughts, feelings, opportunities. And people will start showing up in your life. With practice, you will find that over time, you will change your outlook and choose to be happy, regardless of the events around you.
Here are a few examples for you to practice. Say them out loud and with feelings.
·Begin and end each day with a “Thank you for this wonderful, glorious day!”
    · 38 when you see the gas prices going up.

    · 39 if you are having health problems: “I really do appreciate my eyes that see, my ears that hear, my mouth that tastes, my legs that walk, my arms that lift, my hands that write, my mind that thinks, my knees that bend and my tongue that talks.” The possibilities here are endless: insert (插入) what does work for you and feel good about it!
·Write down what you're grateful for each day. 40 when you're feeling really down. This will. help uplift your spirits. If you practice this regularly, you will find that your list will get longer and longer.
    A. Be grateful for what does work
    B. Read what you wrote previously
    C. You should learn to forgive yourself and others
    D. If we don't, we will only attract more “bad things”
    E. Don't ignore those who once gave you a hand when you are in need
    F. We can choose to think differently by beginning with the smallest of steps

    阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Last week, I was invited to a doctor's meeting at the Rush Hospital. In one of the rooms a patient, who was an old man, got up from his bed and moved slowly towards me. I could see that he hadn't a long time to live, but incredibly he came up to me and placed his right foot close to mine on the floor.
“Frank!” I cried in surprise. 56 response to my cry, he couldn't answer, as I knew, but he tried to smile, all the time keeping his foot close to mine.
My thoughts raced back to more than thirty years ago—to the dark days of 1941, when I was a student in London. The scene was an air-raid shelter (防空洞), in which about a hundred people slept every night. The aim to stay there was to guarantee 57 (we) safety. Among them were Mrs. West and her son Frank, who lived nearby. Sharing wartime problems, we got to know each other very well. Why Frank interested me was 58 he was not normal. He had never been normal ever since he was born. His mother told me he was 37 then, but he had less of a mind than a baby had. Mrs. West, then 75, was a strong, able woman, as she had to be of course, because Frank relied on her completely. She had to watch 59 her disabled son carefully. 60 (raise) her disabled son was no easy job. She was often stressed out. She was a 61 (represent)of a kind and devoted mother, who was 62 (worth) of people's praise.
One night a policeman came into our shelter and told Mrs. West that her house 63 (destroy) already. That wasn't quite true. Though 64 (damage) badly, their house could still be used because the Wests went on living there for quite some time. But they certainly lost nearly everything they owned.
Before we separated that morning, I stood beside Frank and measured my right foot against his. They were about the same size. That night then, I took a spare pair of shoes to the shelter for Frank. As soon as he saw me, he came running-and placed his right foot against mine 65 (repeated). After that, he always greeted me in' the same way.

    Strange Footprints in the Snow
Tom woke up and looked around. For a moment, he wasn't sure where he was. Then he remembered. He and his sister, Lucy, were visiting Aunt Gwen. Yesterday they spent seven hours helping Aunt Gwen clean her basement. Today they would have time to play.
He looked out of the window. Fresh snow covered the ground. He could hardly wait to go outside. Tom got dressed and hurried downstairs to the kitchen.
“Hi, sleepyhead (贪睡者),” said Aunt Gwen. “Lucy has already eaten her breakfast. She's outside.
“That's where I'm going as soon as I finish breakfast,” Tom said.
A short time later, he zipped up (拉上拉链) his coat, put on his boots, and walked out of the front door. The sun made the snow sparkle. He looked around. He didn't see his sister, but he saw something else. There were strange footprints left in the snow across Aunt Gwen's yard.
“They're far too big to be Lucy's. They look like they belong to a dinosaur,” Tom said. Then he added, “But that's silly. Dinosaurs are not around anymore.”
He looked closer: The footprints were the shape of a very large oval (椭圆) with a stem. “Maybe they belong to an elephant or a hippo that escaped from the zoo,” he thought. He held his breath and listened. He didn't hear anything.
He remembered a book he'd seen earlier on Aunt Gwen's shelf. It was a book about animal tracks. He dashed inside to get it. The book had pictures of animals and the tracks they made. 'He turned the pages one by one, but none of the photos looked like the footprints in Aunt Gwen's yard.
He stared at those footprints again. An animal that made such big tracks would have to be heavy. Its tracks should sink far down into the snow. Yet these footprints seemed to skim across (掠过) the top.
How can that be? He wondered.
Tom noticed something else. The tracks never left Aunt Gwen's yard. Instead, they turned and went around the house. “Maybe the animal is still here,” he whispered.
    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。

M: Don't you know she was born there and lived there until she was 12 years old?
    W: Really? No wonder!
    (Text 4)
    W: What's the matter?
M: It's Tom. I don't know what to do. He just sits and watches TV all evening when he should be studying.
W: Yes. Every time I talk to him about his study, he gets angry and shuts himself in his room.
M: We need to have a talk with him when he comes back.
    (Text 5)
W: I gave one dollar to the children next door. They gave me a hand with my luggage.
M: You mean those living in Apartment 13-B?
W: No, they are in 33-B.
    (Text 6)
W: Tom, my plane leaves at 3 o'clock this afternoon, so when will it be convenient for me to set off?
M: Let me think. If you leave straight after lunch, you'd better make it 1: 30. That would be safe.
    W: Thank you!
M: By the way, remember to call a taxi to the airport.
W: Oh, thanks a lot. I will make the phone call right now.
M: Another thing I want to remind you is about your hotel booking.
W: Oh, yes. I'm sure it's all right, but could you do me the favor to phone them to confirm it?
    M: No problem.
    (Text 7)
M: Excuse me. If it is possible, I'd like to change a table.
W: Sure, but could you tell me why?
M: What I reserved was a table in the non-smoking area. But you see, after I sit here, I find so many people are smoking.
W: I'm sorry but this is the smoking area. We must have made a terrible mistake. We are very sorry, but now I will go to check if there are any tables available in the non-smoking area.
    M: Great!
W: Sir, there are tables available in the non-smoking area. Do you want to sit by the window or by the aisle?
M: From the window, I can see the beautiful view of the Pearl River. I prefer that.
W: Fine. Please take a seat. Now, are you ready to order?
    (Text 8)
W: Good morning, sir. How can I help you?
M: I'd like to inquire about the flight to Madrid. Are there any flights next Saturday?
W: Let me check it on the computer for you. Here we are. There is a morning flight on China Eastern Airlines. Are you traveling alone, sir?
M: Yes, I am. What time does the flight leave?
W: It leaves at 9: 00 am. How would you like to fly? Economy, business class or first class?
    M: Business class, please.
    W: Single or return?
    M: Single, please.
    W: What's your name?
    M: Tom Ward.
W: OK, Mr. Ward. I've booked you on China Eastern Airlines, Flight Number 552, which is leaving at Shanghai Pudong International Airport on the 6th of October. Please be sure to check in two hours in advance.
    M: Thank you.
    (Text 9)
W: Good morning. Today we'll talk about theme parks and hear from Andy Wells, who has written a guide to theme parks around the world. Welcome to the program, Andy.
M: Hi, it's good to be here.
W: You really have a dream job, don't you? Flying around the world all the time, visiting adventure parks...
M: Yes, it's exciting. But it's really hard work, too.
W: I bet. So, what's the world's number one theme park?
M: That all depends. In terms of numbers, it has to be Magic Kingdom in Florida. But the most popular park for people who like adventure rides is Cedar Point in Ohio.
W: In your book, there are many theme parks in Asia, too. Can you tell us about them?
M: Sure. First, the Universal Studio in Singapore is very good. There is going to be a dark ride inside a building there. That's fun. In China, more parks will open in the next few years, including a park called Ocean Kingdom. That will have the world's longest roller coaster.
W: OK, thank you for your coming to my studio.
    M: My pleasure.
    (Text 10)
M: Hi, I'd like to talk to the manager about something. I have to travel every day from Souk Road I to the airport. Only the Number 16 bus travels along this road. Your timetable is there. It shows that there are buses from Souk Road to the airport every ten minutes. If this is so, why do I have to wait half an hour for a bus nearly every day? The rules say that if there are empty seats on a bus, they just stop at every stop where people are waiting. Why is it, therefore, that half-empty buses go straight past me when I am standing at the bus stop? The rules say that no bus may carry more than 40 seated passengers and 20 standing passengers. Yesterday I was the first to get off the bus when I reached the airport. I counted the other passengers as they got off. There were 129 of them. Clearly printed on the back of every bus is a sign that says “Highest speed: 50 mph.” The distance from Souk Road to Kai Tak is 12 miles. On Saturday morning a Number 16 bus travelled this distance in 10 minutes. At times, it must have done at least 80 or 90 mph. It is obvious that our bus companies have no respect for the rules or consideration for the passengers. Can nothing be done about this?

28.C 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Compared to those with less time, people with up to two hours of free time a day generally felt better. However, people who had five or more hours of free time a day generally felt worse. So the free-time ‘sweet spot’ might be two to three hours per day.”可得答案。
29.D 段落大意题。根据第三段中的“Part of finding this ‘sweet spot’ is connected with how people spend their free time”和“Most of them believed their well-being would suffer if they had a lot of free time during the day-but only if they used it unproductively”可得答案。
30.C 推理判断题。根据第四段中的“If watching soap opera in your free time makes you feel better, you should do that due to self-care”和“For example, walking and cooking can help burn stress and put people in a state of flow”可推出答案。
31.A 细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“Our results suggest they can benefit from spending their newfound time with purposes”可得答案。

    44.D 根据后文的故事情节可知,Shiner把自己遇到的“困难”如实公布在了社交媒体上。
    45.A 根据后文 I wasn’t sure...pay the rent可知,指望用来支付租金的“积蓄”快用完了。

    One possible version:
    Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to apply to be a little envoy of cultural exchange to promote the communication with foreign schools.
Above all, I have travelled to Europe twice for summer camps before, which helps me experience foreign cultures and look at things from different perspectives. Actually, I am chairman of our school student union, so I will be the right person to share Chinese school culture with foreigners such as student clubs and school activities.
If you need to contact me, please call 68124566. I believe the chance can broaden my horizon and make me grow in many ways and that I can make a contribution to introducing Chinese campus culture as well as Chinese people and Chinese cultures and customs to other countries. Thus foreigners can have a better understanding of China and Chinese schools.
    Yours sincerely,
    Li Hua
    第二节
    One possible version:
Though a little scared, Tom made up his mind to find the animal. Quietly, he began following the footprints. He didn't want to scare the animal away. There was nothing in sight except the strange footprints. Suddenly, there seemed to be some strange sounds ahead. Tom stopped and listened carefully. It came from the backyard. Thrilled, mixed with a feeling of a little fright, he quickened his pace! The sounds became clearer and clearer. Holding his breath, Tom peeked around the corner of the house.
It turned out that his sister was making the sounds. She had something worn on both feet. She was walking on the snow back and forth happily. Noticing her brother, Lucy waved excitedly, “See what I found in Aunt Gwen's basement? They are old-fashioned snow shoes. Aunt Gwen said the shape helped walk steadily on the snow. And that is true!” Tom then laughed, “No wonder I couldn't find those footprints in Aunt Gwen's book.” There was no page for a snowshoeing sister.
