Unsolved Mysteries about the Planet Earth
Mystery 1: Where did water come from?
Water covers more than 70 percent of the Earth’s surface and that makes the Earth earn the nickname " the blue planet " . Then where di water come from? The most popular scientific theory states that the H2came from several violent asteroids(小行星)covered with ice. Another suggests that the water actually has been around since the Earth’s formation However it happened, though, it’s certainly worked out well for the Earth life forms.
Mystery 2: What about all the oxygen?
Another thing is the planet’s oxygen. Tiny creatures released oxygen as a waste product, filling the atmosphere with it. After that, the level of oxygen in the Earth’s atmosphere went wildly up and down until it finally calmed down around 540 million years ago. Since then, it’s remained at about the breathable level we know today. But what caused it to be suddenly steady?
Mystery 3:What caused the Cambrian(寒武纪)Explosion?
The Cambrian Explosion refers to the explosion of complex life forms that occurred on Earth about 540 million years ago. Before then, life had consisted mostly of microbes. But at the beginning of the Cambrian period complex creatures began developing at a rate never seen before. Suddenly, life forms had brains, eyes, and bones. Most living creatures today can trace their blood back to the Cambrian period.
Mystery 4: Will we be able to predict earthquakes?
We still haven’t been able to come up with a way to accurately predict earthquakes. We can certainly try, but our current technology cannot predict them exactly. We know that earthquakes start when the rock cracks underground and the enormous energy released in the process causes vibration, which generates earthquake waves, but we haven’t figured out why that happens, or how to predict it.

(2021·江苏盐城中学高三月考)Is there a strange something high up in the world’s tallest mountains? If so, is it a big bear? Is it a monkey? Or is it a kind of man? No one knows. This mystery has puzzled the world for years.
In 1887, a mountain climber found large footsteps in the snow. They looked like the footsteps of a very large man. But men don’t walk without shoes in the snow!
In 1906, another climber saw more footsteps. He saw a very large animal standing on two legs. As he watched, it ran away very quickly. Fifteen years later, a newspaper had new stories about the “something”. A mountain climber said he had seen the “snowman” walk slowly in the snow. He said it looked like a very large man.
From then on, more and more people had stories to tell. But not until 1951 did a mountain climber bring back the pictures of large footsteps. The pictures showed clearly that the snowman walked on two legs. So it was not a bear or a monkey. Could it be an apeman (猿人)? And the mystery keeps growing. Some day, we may find out just what it is that makes the largest footsteps.

(2020·安徽六安一中高三月考)One day John was looking out of the window when he saw a huge blast of light, followed by an extremely loud explosion. He looked up and saw a huge cloud of dust surrounding the moon. When the dust settled, John saw the strangest thing—the moon was almost split in half.
John’s mom ran over to see what had happened. Then John and his mom heard a couple of men speaking out loud through the open window. “I told you there were aliens(外星人)out there!” one man exclaimed loudly.
“You have to be out of your mind! Our astronauts would have found that out, if that was true,” the other man replied.
“Wow, an alien invasion!” John cried excitedly.
“Calm down, John. There has to be a more believable story than the alien nonsense,” his mom said.
John and his mom moved away from the window to watch the news, hoping that someone would say something more realistic than the alien story. On the news, some scientists agreed that the split of the moon, was a result of a major moon-quake. (2020·南昌县莲塘第二中学高二期末)Early in the morning of June 29, 1991, Carrie and Morgenstern were watching the field. Although they could see nothing through the thick fog, they kept their camera running.
By 6 a.m. the fog began to lift. A pair of circles had been flattened. The wheat were bent but not broken. Outside the circles the wheat was untouched, and there were no footprints or other marks. The circles seemed to have come from nowhere. “ I can’t explain it at all ,” Mike Carrier said to himself with his eyes wide open.
Carrier is not alone since the early 1980s, more than 2000 circles have appeared in farmer’s fields. Most circles form at night between May and August.
Some believe the circles are caused by deer or some other animals. Others think of UFOs. “The circles are messages given by those who come from outer space,” says Michael Green. “Perhaps they are trying to get in touch with us.”
Pat Delgado has done research on crop circles since 1981. He believes that they are caused by “ some form of earth energy.”
Most scientists think that there’s no scientific basis to back up Green’s or Delgado’s theories. In September 1991, Doug Bower and Dave Chorley told newsmen that since 1979 they had made circles throughout southern England to fool people who believed in UFOs. Since the early 1980s, Dr. Terence Meaden has visited more than1000 circles. Now he thinks he may have the answer. He believes true crop circles are made by vortex(旋风) which can flatten the crop.
Now crop circles are still found in southern England each summer. Are they really the traces of UFOs?

13.When he saw the crop circle, Mike Carrie was ________.
A. satisfied B. frightened C. surprised D. interested
根据第二段中“‘I can’t explain it at all,’ Mike Carrier said to himself with his eyes wide open.”

He believes true crop circles are made by vortex(旋风) which can flatten the crop.” 他相信真正的麦田怪圈是由旋风形成的,它可以使作物变平;再结合最后一段“Now crop circles are still found in southern England each summer. Are they really the traces of UFOs?”

That mysterious ball of rock 384, 633 kilometers from Earth has inspired myths for thousands of years. 1 The following are some strange facts about the moon.
The moon is disappearing.
2 It means in 500 million years, the moon will be 23, 496 kilometers farther away than it is now. And one day we may completely lose it.
There are fresh footprints on the moon’s surface.
Man hasn’t set foot on the moon for decades, but fresh prints remain. Is this evidence of an alien life form? Is Bigfoot (大脚兽)taking up extra-planetary(行星外)residence? No, they’re just leftover astronaut footprints.
3 Shadows are darker on the moon than on the Earth.
Astronauts on the moon immediately noticed that their shadows were much darker there than on the Earth.
4 The sun and the Earth itself provide a little bit of light, enough for shadows to still appear, but the shadows are much harder to see.
5
Just like the Earth, the moon has a crust (地壳) that shifts and changes. Moonquakes can occur when the lunar crust warms and expands. While moonquakes don’t reach the same level of intensity (烈度) as earthquakes, they can last much longer.
A. A full moon might keep you awake.
B. But sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.
C. Time is quite different on the moon than on the Earth.
D. The moon experiences earthquakes (or moonquakes).
E. Each year, the moon moves about four centimeters away from the Earth.
F. Because there’s no wind or water on the moon, tracks can last millions of years.
G. The atmosphere that makes light to create shadows on Earth is absent on the moon.
【解析】上文“That mysterious ball of rock 384, 633 kilometers from Earth has inspired myths for thousands of years.(这个神秘的岩石球距地球384633公里,几千年来一直是神话的灵感来源)”表明月球和很多神话这样虚构的事有关。下文“The following are some strange facts about the moon.
【解析】下文“It means in 500 million years, the moon will be 23, 496 kilometers farther away than it is now.
【解析】上文“Man hasn’t set foot on the moon for decades, but fresh prints remain. Is this evidence of an alien life form? Is Bigfoot (大脚兽) taking up extra-planetary (行星外) residence? No, they’re just leftover astronaut footprints.
【解析】上文“Astronauts on the moon immediately noticed that their shadows were much darker there than on the Earth. 空后“The sun and the Earth itself provide a little bit of light, enough for shadows to still appear, but the shadows are much harder to see.
下文“Just like the Earth, the moon has a crust (地壳) that shifts and changes. Moonquakes can occur when the lunar crust warms and expands. While moonquakes don’t reach the same level of intensity (烈度) as earthquakes, they can last much longer.

故填with/including。
5.【答案】were discovered
根据“large- scale excavation(挖掘)on the site only began in 1986”可知,此处应用一般过去时。 故填were discovered。
6.【答案】and
前文“The new discoveries will help to better understand many unexplained findings in 1986”和后文“the similar shapes and findings in the eight pits...make sure their function should be sacrificial pits”构成并列关系,所以应用连词and。故填and。
9.【答案】which

Dear Susan,
Thanks for your attention! From your letter, I know that you are eager to get some details about my assistance. Here comes the story.
Last week, I met a little boy on the street, who seemed helpless in the crowd. Then, I got closed to him, asking what had happened to him. He told me that he had got lost and couldn’t find his parents. Immediately, I took the poor boy to the police station and sought help from the policeman. There, I sat to accompany him, waiting for the police to bring some good news. Half an hour later, an anxious woman came in with a bag in her hand. While seeing the boy, the woman burst into tears, saying: “Thank Goodness! I finally find you and you are safe. ” The boy told her mother it was I who helped him. And then she expressed sincere gratitude to me. “You are welcome”, I answered. Waving my hands to say goodbye, I left with relief.
In this experience, I realize that helping others is really a kind of pleasure, which not only helps the one in need, but also enriches my own mind.
Yours,
LiHua
I was born and grew up in the north of Scotland, which was not far from the sea. When I was little, I enjoyed the seaside scenery very much. I often sat on the rock by the sea and watched the view of the sea. I was fond of playing with the sand on the beach and chased the waves with my old sister, Alastair.
Across the beach there was a tidal(潮汐)island, which means that when the tide goes out, you can walk to it, but when the tide comes in again, you can’t get to it. Mum and Dad never let us go there. They told us that it was dangerous. However, the tidal island was full of mystery to me. I said to myself, “There must be some fascinating scenery worth exploring. How I wish I had a chance to land on it!”
On a little cold day in October, while my parents were away for a friend’s wedding, my sister was determined to take me to the beach near our house, where we would have a good time. I wanted to build sand castles.
When we arrived at the beach, the tide was out. We ran on the beach back and forth and enjoyed ourselves very much. With the help of my sister, I made several sand castles of different shapes. Feeling a little tired, I sat on the beach for a break. I saw the tidal island opposite, which looked very nice in the autumn sunshine.
“Let’s go to explore the tidal island, Alastair,” I said to my sister.
“That’s a good idea. But Mum and Dad said we couldn’t. Maybe we won’t return safely!” Alastair said.
“Don’t worry! We’ll try to return before the tide comes in again.” I begged Alastair.
Finally she agreed. We returned home and brought some peanut butter sandwiches and a bottle of milk with us.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Then we set off for the tidal island.

Paragraph 1:
Then we set off for the tidal island. We walked over the sand to the island and started to explore. There was an old ruined church and a few abandoned buildings full of mysteries. Seagulls were flying in the sky, wild flowers blooming by the roadside. On the other side of the island we enjoyed milk and sandwiches, throwing stones into the sea. After a bit, dark clouds covered the sun and it got windy. I said, “I’m cold and I want to go home.” We walked back over the island to the beach. But we couldn’t find it! It wasn’t there any more!
Paragraph 2:
The tide came in and covered the beach and the water was too deep and cold for me. We were in a dangerous situation. Frightened, I couldn’t help crying. “Calm down,” shouted Alastair. “Quick! We have to return before it’s too late! Climb on my back quickly.” The water was up to her lap, but Alastair was very strong and struggled through the waves with me on her back. We managed to return to the land safely. Later, our parents learned what had happened to us. They were scared and criticized us. We promised not to risk ourselves again.
