How often do you hear people saying that the relationship between their parents and them is not as good as it used to be? Now let's see what you can do to get along well with your parents.
As a teenager, you should respect your parents and what they did for you. If your parents don't allow you to do something, do not go out of the way to do it. There must be a good reason why they feel you should not do that thing. Do not be angry about it or fight with them. Talk to them and explain your opinion to them. As you enter your midteens, you will realize you want to be independent. This change is going to bring conflicts(矛盾) between you and your parents. You will feel your parents control you too much. To avoid further conflict, talk to them and follow them.
When you grow older and become an adult, you will be independent. That can put a distance(距离) between you and your parents. In this situation, listening to each other and understanding each other are necessary to build a healthy relationship between you and your parents. Since you are an adult, the parentchild relationship develops into a relationship between adults. However, some things never change. You will always be their kid, no matter how old you are. So look on your parents as friends, not only as your mom and dad.
( )44. What makes a distance between you and your parents?
A. The personal independence.
B. Your conflicts.
C. Your personal point of view.
D. Their own advice.
( )45. How should you get on with your parents as an adult?
A. By looking on them as your teachers.
B. By looking on them as your parents.
C. By looking on them as old people.
D. By looking on them as friends.
( )46. What is the purpose(目的) of the passage?
A. To tell us how to become an adult.
B. To tell us how to be good children.
C. To tell us how to get on with our parents.
D. To tell us some problems between parents and children.
( )47. In which column(专栏) of a newspaper may you find the passage?
A. Education. B. Science. C. Family. D. Sports.
C
Many parents don't know if they should give chores to their children. But I have no trouble with that. I tried to ask my children to do some simple chores when they were only three years old. They had two chores at first.
Making Me Coffee
This needed them to count out 8 spoons of coffee beans (豆), pour them into a coffee grinder(研磨机) and then grind them for 20 seconds (they had to count slowly to 20). Next, they should pour the coffee grounds into the basket, count out 8 cups of water and pour it into the machine.
As you can see, there was a math exercise behind. As they grew older, the chore (making coffee) would become more difficult.
Cleaning the Dishes
Cleaning the dishes needed three steps in our house. I let one of my children brush the dishes. The other one washed the dishes with water carefully. And I would dry and put away the dishes. Through the cleaning, they could learn how to work together. In order to make the chore interesting, I even wrote a song called “Keep the Washing Going!” My children always felt excited when they sang the song with me.
At 11 years old, they now have the jobs of cleaning the floor, taking out the rubbish and giving the dog a shower every day. What makes me happy is that they can have fun when doing chores on their own.
( )48. Making coffee was helpful to the kids' ____.
A. hobbies B. team spirit C. body exercise D. math
( )49. How did the writer make cleaning the dishes interesting?
A. By teaching the kids step by step.
B. By working with the kids.
C. By singing a song.
D. By counting numbers.
( )50. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. It took 20 seconds to make a cup of coffee.
B. The writer's children do the most chores at home.
C. As the children grew older, making coffee would be easier.
D. The children can learn a lot from doing the chores.

Ⅸ. Let's help our parents do chores
Dear students,
Helping our parents do chores is one of the best ways to care about them. Our parents are always busy with work. They are tired after work, but they still have to do chores. If we help them do some chores, they'll have more time to rest. And sharing housework can help us understand our parents better. So we should help them do housework as much as we can. In fact, we can help do lots of chores at home. For example, we can make the bed, clean up the room, wash clothes, do the dishes and take out the rubbish.
Doing chores is not difficult, but it means a lot. From now on, let's help our parents do chores.
