Theater is a big part of what makes New York shine. This city is full of talent that even your youngest can appreciate, and at the best Broadway shows, everyone’s interest will be ensured.
The Lion King
There’s a reason why Simba’s story continues to draw in crowds year after year: It’s an amazing production with amazing sets and a moving scene. Seeing The Lion King live is something like a ceremony for New York kids.
Ages 8 and up.
Wicked
Based on novelist Gregory Maguire’s 1995 adult version of L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Wicked shows what happened before the events in the children’s book. The musical addresses complex themes, such as standards of beauty and morality. While you can take children five and up into the theater, little ones might be afraid of the flying monkeys.
Ages 8 and up.
Six
On a concert stage, backed by an all-female band, the six wives of Tudor Dynasty Henry VIII air their complaints in the form of modern pop. The queens sing their heads off, and the audience loses its mind. Some of the stories are pretty dark, but the girl-power dance moves will make older kids excited.
Ages 10 and up.
Come from Away
One of the most unlikely musicals on Broadway is an excellent choice for the family: Come from Away is a humane story of a small town in Newfoundland, where 38 planes and more than 7,000 passengers were forced to land on 9/11, 2001. It raises big topics in such a way that invites thoughtful discussion.
Ages 10 and up.
21. Which musical combines history with modern art form?
A. The Lion King. B. Wicked. C. Six. D. Come from Away.
22. What can you learn about Come from Away?
A. It features female dancers and singers.

C. It includes standards of beauty and morality.
D. It stresses harmony between humans and nature.

B
It was the beginning of another school year. I had agreed to teach all struggling students in need of critical intervention(介入). I knew what lay ahead — tough work hours overlaid with guilt, consumed with essays that needed feedback and lesson plans with best practice strategies. No wonder people always acknowledge my teaching career with, “I'm glad it's you and not me.”
Suddenly, my mind transported me to my first few years of teaching.
“Peter Potter,” I called from my name list, trying to control my laughter. “Laughlin McLaughlin?” Surely these were not real names.
“Emotionally disabled... keeps them separated from the other kids...,” the vice headmaster commanded. This was my first teaching assignment.
Surely this year could never be as discouraging as those first few. In my new classroom, I looked into the face of Jason. At eleven, his mother was killed in an accident, leaving him with physical, academic, and certainly emotional scars. I looked at another student, Robert, standing at the door; my vice headmaster asked if I would take him, even though he was an eleventh grader in my tenth grade class.
But then there were — and are — stories of success — of Dustin, in Graduate School for Electrical and Computer Engineering; of Michael, now a teacher in a city school; of Willie... I thought of the thousands of students whose lives have touched mine far more than I could have ever touched theirs.
I broke from my daydream, a smile spreading across my face. Sadness, tears, challenges, fears — yes, teaching is filled with all of these — yet, it is also filled with laughter and smiles, hope, dreams, and rewards beyond measure.
“I'm glad it's you and not me.” Those words resounded in my mind once again.

Have you ever made your life look a little more attractive on social media than it actually is? If so, you may be damaging your mental health.
The posts we make on social media platforms allow us to look back and see what we did on a given day. But what happens when, in an effort to impress our online friends, photos and videos we post become beautiful versions of the things we did?
A young girl named Sophia went out to a romantic anniversary dinner with her boyfriend, had a near relationship-ending fight during dessert, then came home and posted, “Had the best time out with the love of my life!”—even with a photo of the meal. No surprise, but according to a new study, Sophia was by no means unique. Two-thirds of users admit lying about their lives on social media with 20 percent of young people between the ages of 18 and 24 stating that they edit their own stories by frequently lying about relationships and promotions.
By beautifying our online stories, we are harming our memories. We start believing the stories we tell rather than remembering what really has happened. Soon, the real experience is lost and all that remains is the beautified version of history.
Scientists fear that these edited stories will end up changing our memories. It’s well confirmed through research that our own memories are often unreliable and can be easily controlled. Writing down one’s life in the form of a journal, or even on social media can help us keep our memories undamaged, but only if we tell the truth. And recording our experiences through whatever medium, to later recall lessons we have learned, is not only acceptable but desirable. In fact, looking back on our own past—however embarrassing or uncomfortable—is not just healthy but can be enjoyable.
28. Why did Sophia post her story with a photo of the meal?
A. To make herself attractive. B. To show her photography skill.
C. To convince others of her story. D. To show how amazing the meal was.
29. In what kind of tone did the writer write the text?
A. Encouraging. B. Critical. C. Humorous. D. Enthusiastic.
30. The last paragraph implies that many people don’t realize __________.
A. recalling the unpleasant past can also be enjoyable
B. writing down our life on social media does no good to us
C. recording our experiences through media is unacceptable
D. editing our own stories will make us unreliable
31. What is the most probable conclusion that can be drawn from the passage?
A. Leaving others a good impression is desirable.
B. Editing our online stories weakens our memory.
C. Posting our experiences on social media is risky.
D. Beautifying our history ends up hurting ourselves.
C 29. B 30. A 31. D
根据第三段中“No surprise, but according to a new study, Sophia was by no means unique. Two-thirds of users admit lying about their lives on social media with 20 percent of young people between the ages of 18 and 24 stating that they edit their own stories by frequently lying about relationships and promotions.(这并不奇怪,但根据一项新的研究,索菲亚绝不是唯一的。三分之二的用户承认在社交媒体上对自己的生活撒了谎,年龄在18岁到24岁之间的年轻人中有20%的人表示,他们经常在恋爱关系和升职方面撒谎,来编辑自己的故事。)”可知,人们想通过在社交媒体上编造故事并且让别人相信她的故事,而索菲亚这么做也是这个目的。故选C项。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第一段“If so, you may be damaging your mental health.(如果是这样,你可能正在损害自己的心理健康。)”以及第四段“By beautifying our online stories, we are harming our memories. We start believing the stories we tell rather than remembering what really has happened. Soon, the real experience is lost and all that remains is the beautified version of history.(通过美化我们的网络故事,我们正在伤害我们的记忆。
根据文章最后一段“And recording our experiences through whatever medium, to later recall lessons we have learned, is not only acceptable but desirable. In fact, looking back on our own past—however embarrassing or uncomfortable—is not just healthy but can be enjoyable.(通过任何媒介记录我们经历,以便日后回忆我们所学到的教训,这不仅是可以接受的,而且是可取的。事实上,回顾我们自己的过去——无论多么尴尬或不舒服——不仅是健康的,而且可以是愉快的。)”可知,通过媒体分享生活是可取的,但是不能是美化后的结果,即便分享的不是好的事情但也是可取的也是令人愉快的,但是很多人可能并没有意识到这一点。故选A项。
根据文章第一段“Have you ever made your life look a little more attractive on social media than it actually is? If so, you may be damaging your mental health.(你有没有在社交媒体上让你的生活看起来比实际更有吸引力?如果是这样,你可能正在损害自己的心理健康。)”以及下文举例索菲亚的例子,可知,通过美化自己的生活故事分享在社交媒体上其实不利于身心健康。故选D项。
D
There is hope for our planet’s survival. Innovative products are being designed to reduce our dependence on plastic, single-use plastic in particular.
One such innovation comes from international design firm Carlo Ratti Associati with its “Feel the Peel” machine, an experimental rounded juice bar that not only makes freshly squeezed orange juice, but also 3D prints a recyclable bioplastic cup with the leftover orange peels.
Designed with global energy company Eni, the juicer is 10 feet tall and topped with a massive dome (圆顶), feeding the juicer with oranges on demand. The dome is made up of round tracks that hold up to 1, 500 oranges. A 3D printer is set up in the base of the machine.
The machine goes like magic. When an order is placed, the oranges slide down the tracks to a squeezer, and the juice is then deposited into an “orange peel (果皮)” bio-plastic cup, ready to enjoy. Meanwhile, the freshly squeezed peels fall down a tube and gather at the bottom of the machine where they are dried, milled (碾磨) and mixed with Polylactic Acid, creating a bioplastic material. The bioplastic is then heated and melted into a filament (丝状物) and the 3D printer then creates recyclable bioplastic cups, ready to be filled with freshly squeezed juice.
How cool that is! It seems that Carlo Ratti Associati and Eni have plans to take “Feel the Peel’ beyond just orange juice.
“The principle of recycling is a must for today’s objects,” says Carlo Ratti, “Working with Eni, we tried to show recycling in a very tangible (有形的) way, by developing a machine that helps us to understand how oranges can be used well beyond their juice. The next improvement of “Feel the Peel” might include new functions, such as printing fabric for clothing from orange peels.”
32. What is the aim of creating the “Feel the Peel” machine?
A. To make orange juice taste better. B. To produce single use plastic cups.
C. To increase the output of orange juice. D. To take something beyond just orange juice.
33. What is the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A. How the new juicer works. B. What the two companies share.
C. Where the new tool comes from. D. Why the machine is popular.
34. We can infer from what Carlo Ratti said that __________.
A. recycling can be shown in a very popular way
B. their new machine still has some potential
C. his company is very interested in Eni’s design
D. a product can help us understand our world
35. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Orange Peels Are Turned Into Treasure
B. Innovative Products Are Being Designed
C. Orange Juicer 3D Prints Bioplastic Cups
D. Carlo Invents A Recyclable Machine
D 33. A 34. B 35. C

Think back to the last time you shopped for fruits and vegetables. You may have noticed some items labelled with the word “organic”. ___36___
“Organic” refers to the way food is grown. To be labelled as organic, food production must meet strict guidelines. These can be different depending on where you live. In the United States, organic foods must be grown or raised without using pesticides or chemical fertilizers.
___37___ That changed after the Industrial Revolution. During the 20th century, many ideas that were used by factories and big businesses were put into action on farms. This helped some farms grow larger and produce more.
The organic movement was started to get back to the old traditional ways of farming. Why? Many believe the chemicals and pesticides used in modern farming can be harmful to your health. ___38___ And those who support the organic movement also point to its benefits for the environment.
Have you ever compared organic and non-organic foods at the grocery store? If so, you know that organic food tend to cost more. This happens for many reasons. Organic farming produces fewer crops. ___39___ Additionally, organic farms spend more money taking care of the animals they raise. These and other factors drive the cost of organic food up.
Is organic food worth the extra cost? Some people believe it is. They may think it tastes better or just prefer to eat food that has not been grown using chemicals. ___40___They are still trying to find a major difference between organic and non-organic food in terms of safety nutrition, or taste. Still, others argue that the environmental benefits of organic food make it worth the price.
A. Have you ever wondered what that means?
B. The cost of production is also usually higher.
C. For most of history, almost all food was organic.
D. Many people are willing to pay more for organic food.
E. Some also think organic foods are naturally more nutritious.

The Dickensons lived on the eastern coast of America and the three boys, Carl, Simon, and little Ben loved the water. The elder brothers usually helped their dad on his farm and took care of their little brother.
There was an island off shore in the distance. One Saturday the two elder brothers decided to go there for an adventure. When they were leaving, their father said, “Boys, I have to go to town and I want you to take care of Ben. You can carry him together but be careful!” Although they thought Ben was too young to take risks, they still took him.
When the three arrived at the shore, they were lucky to find an old rowboat with oars (桨).Carl and Simon took turns to paddle (划桨)the boat.
Suddenly they noticed the old boat leaking slowly. Carl asked them not to worry and said that they could empty water when they got back. But as the boys neared the island, they struck a rock hidden under the water. It enlarged the hole, more water pouring in. They were glad to be safe on shore!
“How can we get back with the weight of us?” Simon wondered.
Carl answered “You row Ben across, and then come back for me. If we move fast, it won’t sink with only two.” Simon agreed.
The boys started to explore the island. It was flat with many trees. In a couple of hours they had gone all around the island, but when they headed for their boat, they were shocked! Their boat was bumping against trees. The tide was coming in! The island was disappearing!
The boys took a rock and tried to fill it into the hole but they only made it worse because of the old wood. Carl thought a minute “Simon, you take Ben as fast as you can. Then run for the house and see if Dad can come to rescue me. I can climb a tree or something that will give me maybe another hour.” The brothers hugged. Then Carl turned the boat around, helped Ben get in and pushed it as hard as he could toward home
Paragraph 1:
Half an hour passed and only a small part of the island was above water now.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
In a few minutes, dad picked up Carl into his motorboat and hugged him.

Half an hour passed and only a small part of the island was above water now. The sun was setting; darkness was overtaking Carl. Realizing the island would be flooded, he searched around and selected the strongest and tallest tree. Exhausted and scared, he settled himself in the trunk. Shortly afterwards, just as he was about to climb to the higher branch to avoid the rising tide, he heard a motor noise. He gazed toward home and could see a lantern flashing in the distance, then voices calling.
In a few minutes, dad picked up Carl into his motorboat and hugged him. Tears streaming down his cheek, Carl cried “Thank you for your timely appearance!” On the way back, dad explained, “When I got home from town, I couldn’t find you, so I tracked you to the shore. I went back for the motorboat and then I met Simon and Ben. The rest is history. Son, I am proud of you. What you did in risking your life for your brothers was wonderful and you demonstrated that it meant to truly love someone.”
