There is a school in my Manhattan neighbourhood that has been giving out free meals during the Covid-19 pandemic—and every time I walk past it, the line seems longer. A community fridge recently showed up a couple of blocks away; it's one of many that activists have fixed across the city to fight against growing food insecurity. Just around the corner there's a young woman who has become a regular among the beggars I usually see in the area. She lost her job because of Covid-19.
It's not all doom and gloom. While the poor are getting poorer, the 1% are making out like robbers. America's 600-plus billionaires saw their wealth grow by more than $700bn in the first few months of the pandemic. During the same period, more than 50 million American workers lost their jobs. The US government has printed trillions of dollars in economic relief but many of the forgivable emergency loans (贷款) for small businesses seem to have been taken by the super-rich. My local independent coffee shop has closed down, but Kanye West received a partially forgivable loan worth at least $2m. It is becoming increasingly clear that the US is experiencing one of the biggest wealth transfers in history.
Bernie Sanders has a plan to help. Last week, Sanders introduced a bill( 法案) , Make Billionaires Pay Act, which would establish a one-time 60% tax (税收) on billionaires' pandemic gains and use the money to guarantee Americans free health care for a year. There is very little chance the bill will get passed.
Billionaires shouldn't exit in the first place—the idea that they should be taxed at a higher rate during a pandemic to help pay health care shouldn't be slightly controversial( 有争议的) . However, there are some who think such a move would be extremely unfair to "poor unfortunate" billionaires who, as we all know, are one of the most unfairly hurt groups in the world.
24.How does the author develop the first two paragraphs?
A.By making contrasts. B.By giving definitions.
C.By presenting arguments. D.By listing numbers.
25.The underlined sentence "It's not all doom and gloom." implies that ________.
A.the writer doesn't feel depressed at all
B.the current situation of Covid-19 is getting better
C.the billionaires still make profits during the pandemic
D.the woman has suffered more than we can imagine
26.The bill, Make Billionaires Pay Act, was put forward to ________.
A.rid the country of pandemic B.restrict the billionaires' fortune
C.ensure temporary free medical service D.provide short-term loans for health care
27.What is the author's attitude towards the billionaires?
    A.Disappointed. B.Respectful. C.Sympathetic. D.Negative.
    C
My family and I belonged to a country club located across the street from the Long Island Sound. Each summer, the big attraction for us was the pool. I learned how to swim and joined the swimming team but was never really a good swimmer. However, swimming in my younger days was a way to keep cool, and swimming on a team gave me identity and a sense of belonging. It also became invaluable many years later.
Fast-forward (快进) to 1973 – I was married, pregnant and had a home. What made our little home even more wonderful was when I discovered that four blocks away was Rath Park Pool! For the next 30 years, most of our summer days were spent around that pool.
Each of my five kids took swimming lessons and learned all the different swimming strokes (姿势). They later joined the swim team and competed in meets. My daughter even became a lifeguard at the town pool. I sat back and happily took it all in!
As much as I would have liked to have life stand still, it doesn’t. My children outgrew their pool days and moved on. But the pool was still four blocks from my home, so I began to take up swimming again. And it was far better than I ever could have imagined. I got so much out of it that I joined the local pool so I could swim year-round. Whenever I swam, I would always come out feeling physically and mentally refreshed. I often felt that if I looked hard enough, I would be able to see all of the worries and problems I’ve had in life, sitting at the bottom of the pool!
What has swimming taught me? I’ve learned that balance is the key to being a good swimmer. If you are balanced in the water, you have no resistance. Working on staying balanced made me realize the similarities between life in and out of the swim lane (泳道). If you work on keeping yourself balanced, you will be able to swim right through the stress and problems life throws at you!
28.What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 1?
A.Her family taught her how to swim. B.She swam with friends more often in summer.
C.Swimming brought her lifelong benefits. D.She was elected to be the swim team captain.
29.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 imply?
A.The author loved the pool days with her kids.
B.Swimming was losing its appeal to the author.
C.Her kids’ winning competitions made her proud.
D.The author preferred to have a peaceful life.
30.What did the author find after she took up swimming again?
A.Sports can give you the courage to face difficulties.
B.She mastered more swimming skills than expected.
C.It enabled her to see how to handle problems in life.
D.Swimming made her remember her younger days.
31.What is the main idea of the article?
A.The wonderful pool days with the author’s family.
B.The influence of swimming on the author’s life.
C.The physical and mental benefits of swimming.
D.The similarities between swimming and life.
    D
It would not be an overstatement to say that salt is one of the greatest discoveries in the history of mankind. Just imagine how tasteless our food would have been had salt not been discovered. Apart, from adding flavor to our food, it is also an essential ingredient for the health of both man as well as animals, provided it is taken in the right quantities. Salt is also used by the food processing and meat packing industries as a seasoning or preservative ingredient.
Salt has always been helpful in the building of communities and societies, as man normally built his settlements around the sources of salt. At one point of time, salt was also used as a currency. Today, there are many countries around the world that are working hard to extract (提炼) salt so that we can enjoy our food to the fullest. Some of these are producing enough salt to satisfy the requirement of the entire world, while others are producing just enough to support their own people.
According to the British Geological Survey, China is the top salt producer in the world. The United States of America occupies the second position, and India, finishing a distant third. Other countries that, made it among the top ten salt producing nations’ list were Canada, Australia, Germany, Mexico, Chile, France and the Netherlands.
Countries that produced more than 1 million tonnes of salt in 2017 included Peru, Bangladesh, Thailand, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Romania, Egypt, Poland, and the United Kingdom, to name a few. Ranked at the bottom of the list were the African nations of Mauritania and Djibouti.
So, the next time you take your meal and add a pinch of salt to make it more delicious, do share a thought for the numerous salt workers around the world due to whom our food tastes so perfect.
32.What do we know from the first paragraph?
A.Man will die without salt. B.The more salt, the better food.
C.Salt intake should be proper. D.Salt is an optional ingredient.
33.What does the underlined word “these” in paragraph 2 refer to?
    A.Countries. B.Settlements.
    C.Sources. D.Communities.
34.Where does Mexico rank in salt production in the world?
    A.Fifth. B.Sixth. C.Seventh. D.Eighth.
35.What is the author’s attitude toward those who produce salt?
    A.Regretful. B.Grateful. C.Doubtful. D.Faithful.

Five years ago, I had a nine-to-five job, and I usually commuted (通勤) to work by bus. Those long tiring hours of travelling were always annoying. But one day, it was healing.
It was a warm March evening, and I’d just taken a seat on the bus that would take me home. I sat in the third row, by the window, on the driver’s side. It was nearly 6:00 p.m., but the bus was not yet full and the driver gave no signs that he intended to get the bus on the road anytime soon.
A middle-aged woman took a seat opposite me. She was crying. Not speaking to anyone in particular, she tearfully told her story.
She had come to the city to visit her daughter. On the way to the last stop, a thief had stolen one of her bags. It had contained half of the money she’d brought with her. The other half was rolled in a handkerchief and hidden under her blouse, so she fortunately still had some money left.
The bus conductor, driver, and other passengers listened to her story. After a few minutes, she stopped crying, took out some cheese bread from her bag, and began to eat, looking still worried.
An old man in tattered (破旧的) clothes got on the bus. He sat in the seat directly in front of the woman.
After a few minutes, all seats were taken. The driver got behind the wheel and started the engine. The bus conductor collected tickets and began asking us where we were getting off. When he came to the old man’s seat, he became doubtful and asked the old man whether he had any money. The old man admitted that he did not. He explained that he had spent all his money this morning when he’d accidentally got on the wrong bus and now he was trying to go home.

    67.Paragraph 1:
Upon hearing this, the bus conductor ordered the old man to get off the bus. The old man didn’t move. He was almost in tears as he begged the bus conductor to let him take the bus so he could get home before dark. The bus driver, who had been listening to his explanation, stood up, walked to the old man, and repeated the conductor’s order to ask the old man to get off the bus. Apart from the harsh words from the driver and sobs from the old man, the whole bus was in a terrible silence.
    Paragraph 2:
The woman seated behind the old man was also listening and observing the whole thing. When the bus driver and conductor raised their voices at the old man, she shouted, “Stop bothering him! Can’t you see he’s only trying to get home?” “He doesn’t have any money!” the driver shouted back. “Well, that’s no reason to throw him off the bus,” she insisted. Meanwhile, she reached inside her blouse, took out her remaining money, and handed the fares to the conductor. “Here is his fare and mine.
