Familyfriendly Walks
Padley Gorge
Next to Grindleford Station, eight miles north of Bakewell, lies Padley Gorge. Trails are kept as natural as possible—it’s more a case of finding the gaps in the woods than following a path.
Longshaw Estate
The 1.7mile walking route around this National Trust estate skirts the upper end of Padley Gorge. Children love the stepping stones, though Longshaw is mostly all about the giant fallen trees, left in place for little hands and feet to delightfully climb over.
Higger Tor
A pile of giant rocks dominates Higger Tor. Walk through the nearby fields, then let the kids climb over hundreds of strangely smooth grey stones. The views out over the Hope Valley are great and impressive, and the rock pools in Burbage Brook are perfect for rowing in.
Stanage Edge
Popular with rock climbers, this stone cliff marks the boundary of the mysterious land of the Dark Peak cliff and the grasscovered flat land of White Peak. It’s a six miles circular walk from Hathersage. Alternatively, park at the Hollin Bank Car Park and climb half a mile to the top, out of breath.
Chatsworth House
A threemile circle from Calton Lees Car Park takes in a ruined factory, the pretty village of Edensor and views of Chatsworth House. Appreciate the stretch along the River Derwent—deer often hang out there.
1.Which walks are most suitable for children?
A.Higger Tor and Stanage Edge. B.Longshaw Estate and Higger Tor.
C.Padley Gorgey and Longshaw Estate. D.Stanage Edge and Chatsworth House.
2.During which walk are you likely to meet with animals?
A.Padley Gorge. B.Stanage Edge.
C.Longshaw Estate. D.Chatsworth House.
3.Whom is the passage intended for?
A.Friends. B.Farmers. C.Families D.Climbers.

Agassi was very emotional at the end of his final game. On September 3, the American tennis player said a tearful goodbye to his 21-year career after a third-round defeat in the US Open. The 36-year-old tried his best, but was unable to keep up with German Benjamin Becker, more than ten years his junior.
“The scoreboard said I lost today, but what the scoreboard doesn’t say is what I’ve found,” Agassi said to the fans. “I have found inspiration and you willed me to succeed.” It was an emotional speech at the end of a long career. Agassi hated tennis as a teenager as much as he loves it now. His father made him play when he was a child. He got bored, and became a rebel (叛逆者). The strict training that his father pushed upon him got in the way of his wild lifestyle. He grew hair long, wore colorful clothes and spat (吐口水) at an umpire (裁判). Over the years, he has made bad jokes during news conferences.
Asked what he would say to his 17-year-old self, Agassi answered, “I would say, I understand you a lot more than I want to be you.”
The turning point in Agassi’s career came in 1992 when he unexpectedly won his first Grand Slam (大满贯赛事) at Wimbledon. It was the first time Agassi understood what real champions finally understand: “winning is a test of nerves and not just power; it’s a marathon, not a sprint (短跑)”.
And a marathon Agassi was about to begin. He cut his long hair, got fitter and tightened up emotionally. On the court, he was ranked No. 1 for almost two years. His lowest point came in 1997 when his ranking dropped to No. 141. He didn’t quit though. “I knew that I would try to get the most out of myself every day from that day forward. That was my promise,” he said. “That never stopped.”
4.Why was Agassi very emotional when saying goodbye to his career?
A.Because he lost to a player ten years older than him.
B.Because he felt very sad that he was no longer the best player.
C.Because this career has brought him so much.
D.Because he felt sorry for his wild lifestyle.
5.From his speech, we can see that ________.
A.he was thankful to his fans B.he refused to accept failure
C.he wished he hadn’t hated tennis when young D.he decided to take marathon as his new career
6.Through winning, Agassi learned that ________.
A.he didn’t try his best in his career B.it must take a long time for anyone to win
C.people need to never give up to win D.winning once or twice is not enough
7.It can be inferred from the passage that Agassi’s father ________.
A.was an excellent tennis player B.was good at raising Agassi
C.played a key role in Agassi choosing his career D.spent most of his time training his son
C
Fireworks can add excitement to all kinds of celebrations. However, fireworks can be very dangerous if not handled or used properly. To reduce the risks associated with a firework display, adults need to be aware of firework safety rules, and so do children who are watching. There are some basic rules to follow.
Make sure you are using legal fireworks. There are reasons for the banning of certain fireworks, such as safety concerns. Explain to your children the dangers of fireworks and give them a written emergency number to call in case something goes wrong, along with the address of your firework display. Fill a bucket with water and have a fire extinguisher (灭火器) on hand.
Never allow your children to light the fireworks. This should be done only by a responsible adult. Move all children to a safe distance from the fireworks and have them remain there until the show is finished. Make sure the fireworks are setting off pointing to the sky and not to the side. To prevent injuries, it is important that the fireworks are never thrown or held in a person’s hands while being lit. Because fireworks are very loud, you may want to place earmuffs (耳罩) on young children.
When the firework display is finished, there will be a lot of debris (残骸) to pick up. If there are any fireworks that do not light properly, wait at least fifteen minutes before you get close. Place the faulty fireworks and the firework debris into a bucket of water. This will ensure that none of them will relight. Put all unused fireworks and lighters far out of the reach of children so they can’t try to light them. Remember that safety comes first!
8.What can we learn from the passage?
A.There are no celebrations without fireworks.
B.People should be kept away from fireworks.
C.Fireworks bring more risks than excitement.
D.Fireworks can do great harm to children if not used properly.
9.What should you do when you light fireworks?
A.Throw them into the sky. B.Hold them in the hands.
C.Put them upwards. D.Point them towards the side.
10.What should you do after you finish the firework display?
A.Leave the faulty fireworks where they are.
B.Pick up the firework debris and bring it home.
C.Place the unused fireworks in a bucket of water.
D.Make sure the debris and unused fireworks are safe.
11.Which would be the best title of the passage?
A.How to Display Fireworks B.Firework Safety Rules
C.Safety Comes First D.Basic Rules for Adults to Follow

Tripadvisor, one of the world’s most popular travel sites, has recently announced that it will stop selling tickets to attractions that have captive(囚禁的) whales and dolphins. The ban(禁令) is a continuation of the company’s 2016 policy that banned sales of tickets to attractions where tourists come into physical contact with animals, like elephant rides.
“Whales and dolphins do not grow well in limited captive environments,” Dermot Halpin, a Tripadvisor spokesperson, said. “We believe the current generation of whales and dolphins in captivity should be the last, and we look forward to seeing the whole travel industry follow this position.”
The ban applies to all attractions and aquariums(水族馆) that employ whales and dolphins for public displays.
“Our aim is to stop future generations of whales and dolphins from being raised in captivity, and we hope to see them live freely in the wild,” Halpin said.
Not everyone liked the decision. Sea World, a top attraction in Florida, said the move ignored the needs and preferences of the general public. “I think Tripadvisor’s new decision was made in opinion rather than in science and research. It ignores the educational value of zoos and aquariums. Tripadvisor should trust its customers to make well-informed decisions,” said a Sea World spokesman. “Sea World always takes good care of all animals, including whales and dolphins. Sea World will continue to put more efforts in education and animal protection.”
Tripadvisor, which serves an average of about 490 million travelers a month, said the new policy will go into full effect by the end of the year.
12.What stopped dolphins and whales growing well according to Dermot Halpin?
A.Too limited space. B.Unhealthy food.
C.Lots of public displays. D.Too much training.
13.What does the underlined part “this position” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Stopping employing captive dolphins and whales.
B.Tourists coming into physical contact with animals.
C.Whales and dolphins living in captive environments.
D.The current generation of whales and dolphins in captivity.
14.Where did Tripadvisor hope dolphins and whales would live in the future?
A.In aquariums. B.In protected areas.
C.In unpolluted oceans. D.In the natural environment.
15.How did Sea World feel about Tripadvisor’s decision?
A.Puzzled. B.Proud.
C.Unconcerned. D.Disappointed.

Davey got up early in the morning and couldn’t wait to look out of the window. To his great disappointment, it was snowing heavily outside. Usually he would look forward to watching snow, but today he was not. It was Christmas Eve, and because of the snowstorm, Davey was worried that his cousin Josh would be stuck in the road and couldn’t make it to his home for Christmas from a neighboring city.
“We haven’t seen each other for half a year, and I have got a special present for him!” Davey said to himself. “How I wish he could get here!” Davey turned away from the window with a sigh (叹气).
In the afternoon, Davey and his parents drove to the town to buy a Christmas tree. When they finished shopping and were about to leave the store, Davey saw a crowd of people outside. He ran to get a closer look. It was Santa Claus (圣诞老人)! Children were waiting in line to express their wishes to him. “Can I get in line, please Dad?” asked Davey. “Well, we’re kind of in a hurry,” said his dad. “But since this is Santa Claus, I guess we can spare the time.”
Davey gave his dad a big thank-you hug and ran to the line. When it was finally his turn, Davey climbed up on Santa’s lap. Santa asked, “Well, what would you like for Christmas?”
“I wish my cousin Josh could get home for Christmas,” Davey said. “But the snow is so deep that Mom and Dad don’t think he can make it.” Having known from the weather forecast(预报) that it would clear up with the snow stopping in the late afternoon, Santa Claus said, “I don’t usually deliver people on Christmas Eve, but I’ll tell you what to do. 46.Dear Jenny,
How nice to hear from you! In your letter you asked me how to keep healthy. I would like to give you some advice.
As we know, we teenagers grow very fast, so we need plenty of nutritious foods, such as fish, beans, fresh fruit and vegetables. You should not eat too much meat or too many sweets. Also, you should take physical exercise regularly instead of studying all the time. For example, you can play basketball or swim after school. What’s more, having enough sleep is very important. So I advise you to have at least eight hours sleep every day and not to stay up too late. Only in this way can we keep fit.
Yours,
Lihua

It was the biggest and brightest star in the sky, which was just as the Santa Claus had said. Davey looked up to the star and said, “Wishing Star, please let my Christmas wish come true. I wish that Josh would come home tonight, so we can all be together for Christmas.” Then he kissed his mom and dad and was about to go to his bedroom.
Just then, they heard the doorbell. “Who could that be?”Davey’s dad wondered and went to open the door. Surprisingly, there was Josh outside the door! Davey ran to Josh with excitement and gave him the biggest hug he could manage. Josh had made it home after all. Davey’s Christmas wish had come true! Later that night, when Davey was finally in bed, he looked out of his window again, saying to the Wishing Star, “Thank you, Wishing Star. Merry Christmas!”
